Answer
Actually, broadening/improving one's language skills is a very broad concept, it should be done in more than one ways at the same time which is highly recommended. One can NOT become better ONLY in one area, say, chatting, one MUST improve skills in ALL dimensions of the language!

Learning language well requires being as active as possible and making the learning as FUN for oneself as possible. Taking lessons is always important, but equally important are these:

1) Listen/watch: Keep listening to internet radio stations like BBC, watch TV shows in English (use only subtitles, NOT voice dubbing in case you are not a native English speaker!), etc.

2) Write/communicate: Try to find discussion forums from the web about things that you find interesting and FUN (music/various artists, hobbies, etc.) and start communicating there with other people using only English. Start using instant messaging systems in case you find some new friends or start emailing them. Please do NOT be afraid of making mistakes or hesitating, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times! The more you enjoy communicating, the better!

3) Buy yourself a proper dictionary, and each time when you see a strange word that you do not understand, look it up. Putting words into their CONTEXT is one of the best ways to broaden one's vocabulary and grammar knowledge, the more you read and write the better. Memorising is NOT the best way to go with learning vocabulary, grammar or any other language areas! For idioms, you should buy an all-English dictionary which explains the words in English and shows you examples of how to use the words.

The main point in ANY language learning is to make it as fun as possible for yourself. Try to find topics that INTEREST you, read online newspapers (Times, Guardian, Independent...), listen to BBC/NBC and other radio stations online, if you find a discussion forum for e.g. your favourite hobby or your idols in music do participate there, etc. The key word here is CONTEXT, which means that it is easier to learn new words and their usage as well as grammar when you use/see them in their real CONTEXT. The more you see and hear the new words in their context and the more you use them in your speech & writing, the easier it becomes to remember their meanings and correct spelling. Do NOT be afraid of making mistakes though, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times!

I'm sorry there is NO EASY WAY out with this, one really must develop language skills in ALL these language "levels" or dimensions in order to reach better language skills!!

Last but not least: NEVER EVER use ANY online translators, they are nothing but utter rubbish!! English is practically EVERYWHERE in the online world these days, you just have to use your imagination to find it! Learning pace is always personal, it takes the time it takes so there is no reason to hurry it up too much. If you do, you will not learn so well. Also, please learn the basics of the standard English first before advancing to finer details like dialects/accents. A word of warning though: Do stay well away from overrated, overpriced and overhyped language "gimmicks" such as Rosetta Stone, they really are NOT worth for checking out!

Good luck!

Would organization or system is best to keep different groups of extremely diverse or opposing views together?

PeguinBack

High, how can I create an umbrella organization for other groups and make sure they are kept together for the same purpose and do not split?

Answer
You'd want to have a very specific goal. MLK wanted to repeal segregation. Ganghi wanted the Brittish out of India. John Birch Society wants the US out of the UN.

Other leaders who were more vague on their goals, though famous have not been as successful. Peta wants an end to animal cruely, but their actions can't be focused because people fall apart over definition of cruely. Green peace was same way until they focused on Japanese whaling practices.

I'd get a very tight definition of a single goal, and approach groups as a speaker trying to form a coalition and have them add your one goal. You get funding, they get purpose. win-win

the main thing this speaker has is battery to power it up it may be recharged or pencil cells can be used as option

i have can do the basic things like managing the speakers getting attached to the circuit properly but can any 1 guide me what kind of speakers and batteries should i use?

i live in India so please also do help me suggesting the speaker brand i should go for

Answer
It depends on your budget, there's always something better for more money. Stay away from Bose. I use Infinity's for my 7.1. There pretty cheap and sound pretty good. Polk is another brand that's not bad. Stick to brands that specialize in speakers and don't spend all their money on advertising(Bose).

Best home theater setup new home ??? Plz help....?

SagarA

i have taken a new flat with a dedicated home theater room in it, so i would like to know the best items fitting my budget...
i would like to get a tv, a projector screen of 10*8, a projector, amps, best speaker setup mostly 5.1 or 7.1 --- all of this under 25000$
the home theater room is decent size with 8*10 inch screen easily fitting on the breadth side and has low light coming in during day and completely dark during night

For projectors i was considering runco ls-5 or panasonic ae8000.
I have no idea abt screen.
tv would be minimum 65 inch so mostly considering samsung smart tv es9000.
For speakers i was thinking about the bowers and wilkins mini theatre 5.1 setup.
also need some idea about the best amp along with airplay function.

I am not sure about any of these so would like ur recommendations on all of the devices considering my budget and also wanted to know if the small bowers and wilkins mini theater would be as powerful as some of the huge speakers i could get at that price and also recommend me a bluray player.

also i would like to know if this low end 3 year old runco projector would be better than any other new jvc or panasonic projectors like panasonic ae8000 released this september 2012 at this price point, if not which will be the best and is there any tv better than the new samsung es9000
give me ur suggestions and dont tell me to go and see an audiophile because there are no good audiophiles in india

Answer
Hello Sarga

Well it looks like your looking at some nice gear, I just don't know what your budget is in US dollars.

Its unfortunate you say you have no high end audio video dealers in India. There is allot to consider when designing and installing a home theater system so you will need to find someone who has some good technical knowledge in home audio video system installation.

First there are some important things to consider when installing any good home theater system, and that would be power requirements, lighting, ventilation, heating and air conditioning, getting cable or satelite to the equipment location as well as Data. Ideally you can have a equipment room just off the main theater room with easy access to load software. Seating which if it needs to support many guests then you most likely will need to figure out levels of seats so there is no unobstructed view or from sound. Speaker choices and placement, as well as addressing the acoustics of the room. Screen size, and throw distance of the projector.

So as you can see there is much to figure out and much of it must be pre-planned so you have the best experience.

Lets address power first: You need sufficient power so everything runs efficiently and with no issues. Depending upon the level of the system amplifier requirements you may need several dedicated lines of power. Ideally 20 amp or at least 15 amp circuits. These should be AC lines pulled from one side of the electrical panel. This will assure proper phase which minimizes any issues with ground loop hums. Do not use Romex, use 10 gauge solid core copper in its own dedicated conduit. A separate copper ground rod berried 8ft in the ground for its dedicated ground. Don't forget you will need power at the equipment location as well as the TV and projector locations.

Wiring: First there is a difference in the sound and video quality of cables, so buy the best cables you can afford. Make sure all cables are fire rated approved so they meet code. Do not run any cables next to power lines, if they must cross, have them cross at a 90 angle. Be careful not to puncture the cables if stapling them down to studs.

Run a 3 inch plastic flexible conduit to both video locations ( TV and Projector) this will allow you to pull additional cables in the future if its ever needed, keeping a pull string in them at all times. You will need backing or support for TV and projector locations to support them.

Very important to consider ventilation especially at the equipment location as they generate a significant amount of heat which must be ventilated. You want cool air fans on the equipment and reversed fans to pull heat away and out.

Lighting consider you needs for proper lighting modes. Look into Lutron lighting which can be controlled by your remote to create moods, which is important to get the best image quality.

Remote control operation: is very important so it makes the system enjoyable and easy to use. You will need someone very knowledgeable about remote control programming so everything can be operated easily from ONE remote.

As for the gear I don't have enough space to talk about gear but will be happy to send you my recommendations if you email me. For TV's get the Panasonic TC- P55Vt50 that is a no brainier its the best set going right now. As for the projector yes the Panasonic PT -AE8000 is excellent especially for the money. I love the auto aspect ratio adjustment so you can have a 2;35 to 1 aspect ratio screen ( which is the hot setup) and then auto adjust to the other aspect ratios without the need of a very expensive anamorphic len's system.

Runco makes excellent projectors put the older models are outdated and will not compete with many of the new 1080p models. JVC also makes some very nice reasonably priced projectors that provide excellent picture, and it only goes up from there.

Do not forget to have both the TV and projector properly calibrated preferably from a ISF technician or take your time and learn to go it yourself with a good calibration disc like Video Essentials blu ray.

The audio is also very important and since I don't have enough space feel free to email me

I have speaker system in my ceiling and connections coming out of the opposite wall. But these are just cables with no jack and no isolation on tips. More confusing is that there are eight cables with lables, but I completely uable to read the lables. .

How do I connect my laptop to the speakers?
Actually these are not "woofers". Probably they are just "speakers'.

And what is "rca cable"?

thanks again.

Answer
wow i think we have issues here noone should every put woofers in the ceiling first of all but if they are just regular speakers and you are attempting to orientate them get a almost dead 9v battery and tap them on the speaker wire. it should make a poping noise through the speaker these speakers will need to be connected to either a stereo receiver or a audio video receiver and then you plug and rca cable to the back of that and the other end plugs into the computer, most likly with a mini adapter

How to pick a good in ceiling speaker system?

harry w

I'm trying to pick a good speaker system for a limited budget. What is good out there? Is fibre glass speaker better? I see $30 speakers and $300 speakers. Do they really differ that much in quality?

Answer
What this comes down to is what your ears can tell. Go listen to speakers of varying type, make, model, and cost. Buy the one THAT you think sounds best relative to what you want to spend. Can I hear the difference between $30 and $300? Yes. Can you? I dont know. I listened to a pair of $100,000 speakers last week and I could hear a huge difference between those and a pair of $8000 speakers. Now is it worth $92,000 more? Maybe if I crapped $100 bills. You get the point..buy what you think sounds good, but dont be fooled by marketing or brand. Trust your ears, not the salesman.

I am debating between the 7.1 speaker system and the 7.2 speaker system (I mean the amplifier). I already have the 7 speaker. So should i get the 7.1 and 1 sub or 7.2 and 2 subs. Thanks for help in advance.

Answer
This all depends on the size of room you have, most often 1 subwoofer will be fine. Keep in mind also that there are not many receivers out in the market that have a double output for the subwoofer connections. I own an Onkyo receiver TX-N5007 which is a 9.2 and i only use one subwoofer. I use an Energy 12" subwoofer and it only has a 150 watt and is more than enough for my family room. Hope this will help you out.

Can I wire a 2.1 computer speaker system to a 2.0 2-way home speaker system? If so, how?

tubadude01

i have a 2.1 Altec Lansing 15 Watt system with a standard 3.5 mm input and a 80s Infinity RS-9 2 speaker system. I want to hook them up together. Is it just a matter of wiring or do i need a receiver as well?

Answer
You might be able to get away with buying a speaker distribution box and plugging the output of the Altecs into that, then wiring all the speakers into the box, but it's going to be very underpowered at 15 watts.
You really need a receiver to power those Infinity's.

I might be obtaining a 2003 nissan 350z sometime in the near future. Only problem is.. the stock speakers are basically busted. I have no familiarity with what system I should put into the car. Could anyone point in the right direction such as a good system with proper dimensions? (Assuming that it has to fit dimensions). Looking for a fairly nice complete system, but nothing over the top. Looking to keep it under $500-600 if possible.

my best suggestion is to goto www.crutchfield.com on that site you can type in your vehicle type and it will match you with the right sized speakers for your doors.....also sometimes they send directions on how to put them in....at least they do for cd players

What samsung home cinema systems are there that have a small dvd player?

superman

Would also prefer wireless speakers but doesn't have to have it. Thanks...please help...10 points for best answer

Answer
There are model from Samsung that have a dvd player or the blu ray disc player. I do not really recommend them, due to the fact that they are made cheaply and they don't last. When one item fails the whole system will have to be replaced. I prefer an Onkyo HT-S 3300, it is a 5.1 receiver and a set of speakers. It is highly dependable and it is very flexible for adding other items to it. You can add a dvd player or a blu ray disc player to it like a Panasonic DB-60 blu ray disc player which can also play dvd all for under $600. Hope this will help you out.

I am looking to purchase a speaker system for my boyfriends bedroom. The one he has now was 2 speakers and a subwoofer and sounded great and was loud enough to fill the entire house. Sadly he blew the speakers out. I want something similar not like a 5 speaker surround sound deal and around a $200 budget. Primary use is music. Something he can keep on the desk and move around.

Answer
I heard a story from one of my family members that my uncle is notorious for blowing out speakers, but he never blew a JBL speaker.
- Some good receiver speaker brands are polk audio, energy, monoprice, klipsch, M&K, JBL.ect
- Some good receiver brands are onkyo, denon, pioneer, yamaha, sony.

Also I am not sure if your looking for computers speakers that plug into the colored outputs on the back of a computer.
- Some good computer speaker brands are logitech, creative inspire, cyber acoustics (ca), altec lansing.ect

- At crutchfield (never shoped at this site tho) the 5.1 energy take classic is on sale for $200!, it's originally $300-500.
- If not you can go to the speaker brand sites and look at individual speakers and then look at sites/stores that sell them.

im looking for a speaker system that's affordable but doesnt compromise on quality. any in mind?

Do I have 200 dollars from Yule to spend, and I decided that what I want/need more than anything is a good pair of headphones, an an iPod dock or speaker system that I can bring to college next year. I would prefer a dock that charges and has remote control. I can't spend more than 200 dollars.

Answer
http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP23GX/

^^^ The cheapest decent docking station with speakers I could find. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a remote, is that a deal breaker for you?

However, in the headphone department, I recomend the K 142 HD headphones from AKG.

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-K142HD-Definition-Semi-Open-Headphones/dp/B0028N78HA

18-24k frequency response which can suit all types of music, semi-open design - great acoustics, deep/clean sound, and virtually no distortion whatsoever.

At $100, these headphones are a fantastic deal; if you're not a fan of the semi-open design, check out headphones of similar prices from Audio Technica, (other AKG's), Sennheiser, Grado, etc.

(I left you about 40 bucks of wiggle room incase you didn't like one of the items)

Best of Luck

Speakers for college dorm room a good idea?

gorilla

I like to listen to quality music, and usually the best way to do that is through good speakers with a sub woofer. My laptop speakers are ok, but they're not as good as getting a separate speaker system. However, I know that when I am in my dorm room, I will not be able to play music very loud due to roommate, neighbors, etc. So I am wondering if it would be worth it/ a good idea to get speakers. I found nice ones for $40 that are pretty compact as well.

Answer
Not only your roommate, but your neighbors are going to be very irritated with you if you use them. I agree with the other poster; if you want some harmony with your neighbors and roommates, then get some headphones. They will definitely appreciate it. The walls in dorms seem to be paper thin, and, when you're studying or sleeping, noise like that is very annoying. Once you get a house or apartment, that would be a totally different story (depending on the apartment, I guess), but I think it will really be worth it to be kind to people in your dorm. Plus, the RA can write you up if it's too loud.

I made lifelong friends in my dorm, and I hope you do, too! Good luck in college this fall!

I have a cheap speaker system consisting of a subwoofer and two small speakers. The main control on the system has a single cable (green) that is supposed to plug in to wherever. Right now I just plug it into my iPod/Laptop. I want to connect it to my TV but my TV only has a connection for a digital audio cable. How do I connect these speakers to my TV?

Answer
Your TV should have both a digital and an analog audio output. The analog audio should be in the form of an RCA (red and white) connector. A simple 3.5mm stereo-mini plug to RCA adapter should do the trick.

http://www.gigaweb.com/products/view/18137/6-3-5mm-stereo-mini-to-dual-cable.html

If your TV does not have an RCA audio out connection, then you have a slight problem and you would need more specialized equipment to do the digital to analog conversion for the analog stereo-mini plug on your stereo system.

Matt

I would like some recommendations for good audio speaker systems at a low price. I am on a budget, and would like to find a great sounding system with a subwoofer for $350-$550. I'm sure they're out there! Please help!

Thank you

Answer
Well, you're not clear on what exactly you need.

A good HT audio system includes a home theater audio receiver, a set of speakers, in budget systems, we're talking 5.1 systems, and maybe some of the source devices, such as a disc player, be it an upconverting DVD, or a BluRay.

The first thing is that the all in one systems that include the disc player in with the control unit are just garbage. They tend to have bad speakers, and ones which have proprietary connections, so you cannot use them without that system's control unit. Then, there's the fact that having the disc player be built in with the control unit of the system means that you cannot later upgrade it, and that if it breaks, your whole system is out of action.

No, if you want good sound, and good connectivity, plus the ability to upgrade one part of the system without replacing 100% of it, then you want a separate audio receiver, and a proper home theater speaker set made by a company that specialises in speakers.

A good pick on Amaz*n would be a Yamaha 371BL receiver, going for $190 (list price $250), then add a Polk 705 5.1 speaker system for $250 (list price of $600). Add in some 16 gauge speaker wire (100 feet for about $12), and some connecting cables (digital optical cable-connects TV audio out to the receiver, so that you can listen to the TV's sound through the HT system-$5; HDMI cables to connect the disc player to the receiver, then a second one going from the receiver to the TV, $3 each; and a subwoofer cable, about $8), and you'll be set for good sound for years to come.

Call that just under $500, all included.

What is the best component speaker/stereo system for under $200?

Caljugglin

I have $200 and I wanted to get the loudest best sounding speaker system. It would be for my college dorm.

I wanted to get Cerwin Vega's but thats to expensive unfortunately.

Answer
$200 is not very much money to budget on a new stereo system and if you found one for that much it would be plastic made in China crap. Don't despair because there is hope. In all honesty the best stereo system you can get for $200 is a used one. I strongly recommend buying a vintage stereo receiver and speakers. The "golden age" of audio was roughly from 1972-1980. This was when manufacturers were competing against each other in what was known as the "receiver wars". Some of the best looking, quality audio components were built during this era. A vintage 30 watt per channel receiver easily outperforms a new 100 watt receiver made today. Luckily there is a market for these because there are avid collectors of these units. Quality receivers were either built in Japan or U.S.A.. Search craigslist, ebay, thrift stores, and garage sales for receivers made by Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, Kenwood, Technics(Panasonic) just to name a few. You shouldn't have trouble finding a good one for $100 or less. Same goes for speakers. Only buy speakers made in the U.S.A., Japan, or Europe(usually Germany,Denmark, or the U.K.). Be careful when buying vintage speakers. Pay close attention to the condition of the surrounds on the woofers if they are made of foam. Those generally tend to last only around 10 years or so. It's possible to have foam surrounds replaced though. Rubber surrounds last almost indefinitely. I had a system before that consisted of a Pioneer SX-780 receiver($100) and a pair of Pioneer HPM-60 speakers(REALLY lucky score for $20 at a garage sale). You's have to spend well over $1000 for something new that can compete with the sound quality of that. Keep in mind that you can connect any CD player or MP3 player to the AUX input on these receivers. Good luck with your search.

Need help on deciding a Motherboard for a gaming computer?

speaker system battlefield 3 image

ArmyGuy

I am (for the most part) knowledgeable about building computer for gaming, but motherboards have always been a little trouble (mainly with reliability with certain brands). But i am trying to build something completely different now. I am building it in an AZZA 9000 White Full ATX tower. It can accept the bigger ATX mobos and I would like to have one. Also, with this case, (search it on new-egg and watch the video about it), it is HUGE. I want to put a Corsair H100 CPU liquid cooling system on it but with certain mobos, (mainly standard size) it wont reach the radiator in the top of the case.

Now this is for a hardcore, dedicated gaming rig and I am looking to spend max 350$.

Also, I need help deciding on a processor. I was thinking an Ivy Bridge i7, but I am not sure what is the newer and better stuff out there.

It has been about 5 years since I built a new rig from the ground up.

Thanks for any help in advance!

Answer
My experience is in Component Engineering and Procurement Engineering from many years at IBM and Lenovo (now retired young) and I've been answering and researching forums and gaming web sites quite a bit and learned some key things. As long as you are experienced and knowledgeable, you should understand my view:
First of all, about CPU choice- Definitely Intel core i series at the latest releases.
Gaming does not seem to use more than 4 cores and no hyperthreading. When I saw a comment about Battlefield-3 designed for 6 cores, I found a test done with a 1st gen i7 where he underclocked it, turned off 2 cores, turned off hyperthreading in separate tests. The frames per second remained identical.
Old games used 1 core. Mid-time to a couple of years ago 2 to 4 with the 2nd two pretty weakly. The latest games probably use 4 cores effectively, but they are not at 6 cores in their software design yet and may not bother to be, and certainly virtual cores of hyperthreading are a waste.
When you compare i5-3570K, i7-3770K, i7-3970X, you see that in excluding hyperthreading, and then accounting for idle cores, the difference in performance is only a few percent despite the strength in non-gaming and video editing that fully uses the CPUs.

I have thumbs-down from hard core gamers that think it's better because they spent so much, but when you see them side by side and lab tested, even CPU intensive games aren't getting the difference. Some games recommend the i7's for maximum results, but unless they wrote in for hyperthreading, it cannot be notably better. If you put the extra $100 or more into the graphics, you do better.
i5-3570K and i7-3770K both support pcie x 16 3.0 when motherboard is able to. The fancy i7-3930 and i7-3970's show pcie x 16 at revision 2.0 as Sandy Bridge. I think your choice is gaming should be the i5-3570K, and if you want to spend a bunch more, you go i7-3770K and it should overclock a little higher. You might get a 10 to 15% performance boost over the i5 when a game is cpu dependent and high graphics enough not to max out. 60 Hz displays max at 60 fps, and visual perception maxes at about 40.

About a motherboard, you have PCIe x 16 3.0 number of slots for SLI/crossfire. Single at x16, one at x16 and one running at x4, then x16 as single and two running at x8 sharing bandwidth, and top end boards able to do 2 at x16. Those are probably what you want.
You look for terms on the web site like Mil spec and all solid Japanese capacitors, and 2 ounce copper to get the highest reliability. gold plating could be flashed on or 30 microinches or anything in between and looks the same. The digital power can be of different forms and after seeing a few specs you might notice differences. On board audio has improved and Realtek 898 rivals standard sound cards if you raise the volume with amplified speakers. Some have dual internet. Some various wireless functions. You choose about USB 3.0 internal to bring to the front of the case and eSata and ieee1394 firewire and decide the case to match it. There are high rated older design cases still with USB 2.0 only. Azza 9000 has 2 x USB 3.0, 2 x USB 2.0, e-SATA, HD Audio, Mic Front Ports. eSata is not common on motherboards especially as an internal I/O. You may need to wrap back through the back panel when it has eSATA
This is a shopping and compatibility check site and you can share your part list as the permalink or saved:
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/motherboard/#sort=a6&c=52
Put in the CPU first and matching motherboards display.
Then it is a one-by-one check.
Asus and Gigabyte are tops. MSI and Asrock generally slightly lower. Most others you can skip.
If you are on the 1155 package CPU rather than 2011, there are only a few uber-expensive boards.
The case holds XL-ATX, E-ATX, Full ATX, Micro ATX

And, when you consider RAM, note that the memory controllers of latest Intel only support to 1600 speed plus XMP self-overclocking, and with WIndows in 4GB and graphics cards with their own plus sharing a couple of GB, 8GB RAM is usually enough.

http://www.asus.com/Motherboard/P8Z77_WS/#specifications
P8Z77 WS is impressive with 4 PCIe x 16 slots where 2 can run at x16 as a double bandwidth.
http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-motherboard-p8z77ws
Also seems to have the double port internal USB 3.0 instead of splitting one.
Many nice features.
Certainly there are many good boards, but need to choose your cpu first.

Need help for the 100th time, can't build own computer, need help on creating one on cyberpower?

Christina

Well, for the first problem: I can't build my own, so please don't tell me to.
2nd: This is for my brother who is a massive gamer but his computer drowned and he has no money.
3rd: I have a tight budget of 1000 dollars, and I need a monitor, keyboard, and mouse with this desktop. Windows 7 included.
I really just want the computer to be able to play games such as Chivalry Medieval Warfare, on possible highest setting. I've asked thousands of questions like this. PLEASE I JUST NEED HELP!

Answer
With your budget, here's the best I could do... The configuration is saved for a few days:

http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/saved/1EUEKJ

Core i5 3470
8GB RAM
GeForce GTX 650 Ti (EVGA superclocked)
500GB hard drive
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Keyboard, Mouse & Logitech speakers
500W Corsair power supply

Your total is $903 with free shipping.

The hop over to Amazon and grab this monitor:
http://www.amazon.com/Hannspree-HL203DPB-20-Inch-LED-lit-Monitor/dp/B006C2CYGI/ref=sr_1_21?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1359595607&sr=1-21&keywords=computer+monitor

You could also check places like CostCo- see if they've got something for that price.

Going with a less expensive 1600x900 monitor instead of 1920x1080 actually improves results in games- he'll be able to play titles like Battlefield 3 and Arma II on ultra settings instead of high. The higher your monitor resolution is, the more powerful your graphics card must be to achieve high frame rates.

You can modify the Cyberpower options slightly if you want, like a 1TB hard drive instead of 500GB for something like $12, or a 600W Corsair power supply for $9 more, but you're already cutting it very close on price. Don't go for the "standard" power supplies, those aren't very high quality and have a reputation for failing within 6 months.

Note that CyberpowerPC is more expensive than building from scratch, you could get a much faster system for the money if you had someone who could assemble the parts. But if that option isn't available, this build is probably your best bet.

For gaming in general and real-time strategy games in particular, Intel CPUs are much better performers than AMD. So I don't recommend going with an AMD-based computer.

Good luck!

How do I know that the computer I am ordering online has DirectX 8.1 or better?

heath1500

I am about to buy a new computer. The game I love to play needs those sound and video cards. How do I know the computer has those cards? And does it have to be those cards specifically? Any suggestions for a low cost computer that will support amateur games. Nothing too crazy. Mostly command and conquer.

Answer
Command and conquer system requirements:
Required System:
Microsoft Windows XP
PC with 1.6 Ghz equivalent or higher processor
256 MB of system RAM
512 MB of system RAM for online play with 3 or more players
6 GB available hard disk space
8x speed or faster CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive (for the Collector's Edition)
64 MB GeForce3-class video card. The game only officially supports cards with ATI (Radeon 8500 or greater) and Nvidia chipsets, and the Intel GMA 900 and GMA 950 products. The GeForce 4 MX is not supported
Sound card with speakers or headphones
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
56.6 Kbps or better modem for 1v1 online play
Broadband connection for online play with 3 or more players
DirectX 9.0c or above.

Minimum Required Specs:
Windows XP or Windows 2000
1.3 GHz Intel Pentium IV or AMD Athlon processor
256 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce2 or equivalent video card with 32 MB RAM
DirectX 9.0b compatible sound card
4 GB available hard disk space
Please note that while you will be able to play The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) with the specifications above, play experience can benefit from additional RAM, above the required 256 MB
Nvidia GeForce2 MX is not supported.

You need to meet or exceed these requirements to play this game. These are going to be met with all new computers except for the video card requirements. If you get on board video you will probably be running an 8mb card where you need 32mb of video memory. So make sure it has at least 32mb of video memory.

Can I still use wireless mic system with new mics?

E2K

Hello,
at my job we use a portable wireless mic system for presentations and such. We run it through a fender passport speaker system. It's about 3 years old now and originally came with 2 wireless mics. Both of mics are now kaput, but the receiver unit is still good. Is it possible to replace the wireless microphones with new ones? How will I know if they are compatible with the receiver? I can provide the model number and specifics and all that if need be. Help!

Answer
get them from the same manufacturer as the original

i have some bad news though, many of the wireless systems were illegal and the FCC has come down on manufacturers to stop non-licensed sales. a number of the channels were in the old UHF television band that has been reclaimed for other use because of the DTV transition.

if you are caught in this mess, it might be better to just start over making sure you have legal new equipment.

How do i post something to sell on ksl?

unguardian

I made an account on ksl, but i don't know where to go from there to post something. I just need to sell this p-7 paramax home theater speaker system. it's $2400, but i'm selling it for $300. So can you tell me the steps to post it for sale?

Answer
Funny, sounds like a fat scam to me. Paramax is a fake brand. Fraudsters sell them to people on the internet and parking lots telling them that they are worth thousands but they are letting them go for just a few hundred dollars. In fact, the speakers are crappy knock offs and will no doubt break. They arent worth one cent. But nice try dude. Go scam some other people.

What is the best volume setting for my stereo receiver connected to an in-ceiling stereo with volume controls?

speaker system multi room image

I am planning on supplying 110W RMS per channel to 8 speakers in my home that have a range of 60-120W each. Because this is a multi-room system, each room has its own volume control. My question: what is my best choice for setting the master volume so that I get optimal sound with volume controls at the rooms? Also, is there any way to bypass the master volume control on the receiver so that all volume control is provided in the rooms (e.g. certain type of receiver)?

Answer
I don't know exactly how are you going to connect those 8 speakers with the stereo receiver to supply the 110 W RMS per channel. The whole idea seems like one of those crazy DIY projects where some of the equipment pays the price. (Usually it could be the speakers but given that you are including some extra volume controls into the soup then maybe the receiver will become the guinea pig this time)

If this "in-ceiling stereo" is a true multi-room system it must have some controller unit with support for connecting an external equipment as the source and maybe connections will be done via line level (usually with RCA connections and not to speaker terminals), so it will bypass receiver's amplifier and volume control. Then volume control plates on each room or the controller unit should have the required built-in amplifiers. So no "desired volume level" for receiver will be needed.

If you only see cables to connect, then maybe some controller unit or multichannel amplifier will be needed before connecting the receiver to that. This is because stereo amplifiers are not designed to drive 8 speakers out of the box and also they expect a minimum nominal speaker impedance connected to each speaker terminals (So don't even try if you don't know how all 8 speakers are wired there and what will be the final impedance of that system).

But as your question is about volume level setting and not about how to connect all that, then....

Given that you really know what you're doing (and you can actually get that system all wired and working) I think the best way to get optimal sound is this:

1) Select the test material (CD or radio). But I would suggest the loudest you can get from what you're going to listen.
2) Set receiver's volume level to the minimum and turn it off.
3) Set volume controls on all rooms to minimum and only set the largest room volume level to the max (this will be our test room).
4) Turn on receiver and increment volume level until desired maximum volume level is reached in "test room" (This maximum volume level should be the maximum comfortable volume level you like or just the maximum volume level without distorton heard).

This will be the optimal volume level to use for the receiver.

(Don't forget to set volume level to min every time you turn on/off the receiver - This way volume level on each room doesn't matter).

Now just check the smallest room performance so that max volume level there is still comfortable (but as we choosed the loudest test material and not always full volume will be used it should be just fine) and then check multiple rooms at the same time until you see how the complete system performs. The volume setting on one room should not affect other rooms or else it will not work.

To bypass receiver's volume control you need to use line level outputs (RCA connectors usually called "line out" or "pre-amp") and one additional external amplifier for each room (because bypassing volume control on the receiver will bypass its built-in amplifier too).

The real multi-room solution will require specific multi-zone audio distribution equipment, they can also include multi-source control so you can listen to different sources on each zone. Try this link:

What would be the best choice for a multi room wireless sound system?!?!?!? PLease Help?

Ryan

I have volunteered to install a multi room wireless sound system in a local art gallery. There are 3 different rooms and they want 2 speakers in each room. ( all have to be wireless) With the mail receiver being hooked up to a computer for Pandora, itunes and what not. What would be the best way to go about doing this? Please be detailed and include links to your recommended products. Thank you so much!!!!

Answer
Use some care, here! They might not want something
that is hard wired, or wires running hither and yonder.
If they have a drop ceiling, you will be able to hide all
the wire necessary to run the speakers. Going from
room to room may require a run through a wall or two.
The use of wireless satellite speakers my not be a
good idea, depending on their budget. The system you
should install, if you really have to go wireless, should
operate in the UHF band of frequencies, to prevent
interference. If they have Computer networking cable,
a telephone system, or other communication cable
going from room to room, you may be able to follow
these runs to hide the wire. There are a lot of choices
here to be made. You will have to decide which is within
their budget, and the easiest to install. You might want
to try logging onto the following site:

www.mcmelectronics.com

These kind folks have a good selection of Home & Pro
Audio Equipment & Accessories at reasonable prices.
I hope this will help you on your installation.

Where can i rent a microphone and speakers?

speaker system rentals
on Games/Activites - Affordable Party Rental & Supply *APRS*
speaker system rentals image
Q. I'm putting on a performance for a christmas party next week and I want to be able to use a microphone and speakers so everybody can hear me sing.

Answer
The standard answer is an "audio visual rental" place. You need to know the approximate size of the room and the number of people in the audience - they will help you pick a system of appropriate size. (But if it's in anyplace but a private home the party organizers, whoever rented or arranged the venue, should be providing PA equipment.)

Minimum equipment needed is a microphone, a mic preamp or a small mixer, a power amplifer, and one or two speakers. The speakers should be up high, preferably on stands, so they beam out over the audience's heads - sound from speakers on the floor both blasts the front row, and is absorbed by the front row.

Also, you should be behind the speakers, not in front, to minimize feedback.

How do you check if people are listening to you using hi-tech listening equipment?

There are devices today that when pointed at your house can hear everything that goes on inside. I think somebody is listening to my conversations, either my phone is tapped, or they are using such a device. I have stopped using my phone, I have put aluminium foil over my front windows, and pointed speakers towards them constanly playing music, hopefully this should work. Are there any other methods I could use?

It could also be that my house has been bugged, possibly by my rental company, they do 'inspections' you see, theres ample time to plant bugs, no one is home at the time.. Yes it all makes sense.. How can I check my house for bugs?

My next inspection im going to set up a survellience system, then I'll know exactly where they are.

Ive got to find out who is doing this, perhaps I could trap them, pretend to be talking to someone, and make them slip up.. Does anyone know of any good senarios I could use to trick them?

Answer
To find bugs planted in your apartment, get a metal detector and thoroughly check everywhere. As for trying to figure out who's doing this, a great plan it to talk about a huge terrorist plan that's coming up, the first group of people to turn you in, or to arrest you, are listening to your conversations.
