I'm looking to get a good speaker system for my boyfriend for his birthday. He is really into music and plays a lot off of his laptop. I would prefer something with quality bass.

Answer
Although that is a really nice gesture, your not going to get anything very good for that budget. Does he already have a reciever or integrated ampliifer ? If not and your needing to just play music off his laptop, the best thing to get him if your really determined to buy him speakers at that price range would be to get a pair of powered studio monitors. They have there own amplifier built in, is designed to drive the speakers properly, and they are designed to be very efficent and play pretty loud when needed.

Forget about trying to get speakers with real low bass, your better off getting speakers that have good qualiity of bass and then he can add a subwoofer later to supplement the lack of low bass they may have.

The best buy in speakers are the Tannoy 501a but they are little above you budget at $308 a pair or $154.99 each. Fostex PMO.4n arent to bad, at $199 a pair.

How do I get sound back on my computer?

Q. So on my computer I have a speaker system with bass hooked up to it. And recently I turned on my computer and the sound just didn't work. Can anyone suggest a way to fix it?

Answer
Try first a System Restore to a date when sound was fine. If that fails, reinstall the sound driver. Driver is usually in the Drivers CD that came with new computer. If CD is gone, download a copy of the driver from PC maker's support site.

Will I be able to run them simotanously? One is a 2.1 sound bar and subwoofer and the other is a 5.1 five speaker theater system.

Answer
Not at the same time, and you will need to be re-pairing maybe.

I would get a proper surround system and use that only for your sound.

I just bought a GE 2.1 speaker system from Jasco products and it will not play when coneected to my dell laptop. I have everything plugged in right.I used the laptop with a different system and it works just fine. With this one I can hear noise coming from the speakers but no music. And when subwoofer is turned all the way up I can hear radio in the background. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
One thing you might want to check is the sound card option related to the digital audio output. Not sure what kind of speaker system you used before but try changing that option and see what you get. Also make sure the speakers are plugged into the speaker output. On my Dell, the mic input is adjacent to the speaker jack and is also the same size and I have gotten them mixed up before.

Have 12 hours of music on laptop and want a more compact speaker system than the 2 speaker and sub-woofer system.
Can we hook it up to our stereo and run house speakers? We're having a outside party and would like to be able to use the music

Answer
There are many options for speakers as you probably already know. I personally like speakers from Creative labs.
www.creativelabs.com Also, check out cnet.com and search on speakers for evaluations and consumer reviews. As for connecting to your home stereo, yes, it is very possible. All you need is a cable that connects from the computer output to the stereo's input. You can buy them pretty cheap from computer store, electronic stores, and super stores.

I have a decent 5.1 speaker system for a PC. I no longer use the PC but use a laptop and do not want to buy a new speaker system if there is some device out there which will allow me to run the 5.1 . Yes I am aware that I will only receive sereo from the laptop.

Answer
Not that I'm aware of unless the laptop has a super sound card built in that has the drivers needed to support 5.1. You might want to post this in computer instead of home theater. Too many people think this is where all the geeks hang out, but that is not the case. Try computers.

How do you hook up two separate speaker systems to one computer?

IronAngel2

I currently have a HP Media Center PC and would like to hook up another speaker system to it.

Currently I have a Creative speaker system, it has two smaller desk top speakers and a sub-woofer. It connects to my PC through a standard AUX cable into the back port of my PC.

I would like to hook up another system, one consisting of 2 desk top speakers and a sub-woofer, this system also connects to a PC with a AUX cable.

I just need to know whether I need to purchase a AUX split-er or could I just plug the AUX cable into the port that is in the front of my computer?

Answer
You just need to find a way to plug it in, it doesn't matter how.

Then right click on the sound icon

Click playback devices

and enable both of your sound systems. (Both should show up)

I'm looking to put together my own car stereo system and was wondering what all is needed to do so. For exacmple the head unit, subwoofers, amps and so on.

Answer
Here is what I did on my 97 STS Cadillac.

NEW Sony explode everything except the baby bazooka sub.
Head unit 180.00. Bluetooth usb etc..
500 watt amp, 4 channel. 225.00

Door speakers dual cone 120.00

Deck speakers triaxel 6x9 125.00

Big ( 3/8) power wire going from the battery to the trunk, with a big fuse.

Good size braided speaker wires that all reached the trunk.

3 coax braided wires that reached the trunk from the head unit. ALSO don't for get to run a small signal wire to the trunk from the deck for the amp signal. L R front- L R rear and sub out. (I took out the front seat and the back seat and ran everything under the carpet)

Get a good ground fore the amp, in the floor of the trunk. (I drilled a hole and used some sand paper)

It was about 600 bucks and 6 hours work.

I have a 1 farad capacitor ready to go in, but so far there is no dimming of the headlights or charging problems.

Help with choosing speaker system in 350z?

I might be obtaining a 2003 nissan 350z sometime in the near future. Only problem is.. the stock speakers are basically busted. I have no familiarity with what system I should put into the car. Could anyone point in the right direction such as a good system with proper dimensions? (Assuming that it has to fit dimensions). Looking for a fairly nice complete system, but nothing over the top. Looking to keep it under $500-600 if possible.

Answer
my best suggestion is to goto www.crutchfield.com on that site you can type in your vehicle type and it will match you with the right sized speakers for your doors.....also sometimes they send directions on how to put them in....at least they do for cd players

What would be a good speaker for my bedroom?

9.1 speaker system image

I want a good speaker that can provide strong power for my bedroom. I was hoping something that has really good subs so I can vibrate the heck out of room. I'm looking for something $200 or under. My room is about 12 sq ft. I'm not really sure where to start looking or what to get. I'm perfectly okay if it's overpowered for a 12 sq ft room, in fact, I'm kind of looking for something overpowered. I'm okay if it's overkill. In summary, I need a sound system that provides (hopefully) an excellent sub/bass, that's under $200, that I can hook up my iPod to when I want to listen to some good music. Any help with this?

Answer
- Your budget is to low to get a decent low end system. If you get a decent low end receiver and speakers it's going to cost around $400+. (You might want to check craigslist, you might find both for around $50, use at your own risk).
- I would like to put out that music is dynamically compressed (depends who edited it) and then amplified (basic edit, just make sure it's not pass clipping) = It's going to be loud = I would be more concerned about the audio quality of your system and the audio quality of the file.

- Some examples of good low end surround sound speaker brands that I recommend are: Polk Audio, Energy, Monoprice, Klipsch, JBL, M&K.ect
- Example of good low end surround sound speakers = Polk Audio Blackstone TL Series TL1600 or TL1900 or TL2600 or TL350; Energy Take Classic or Energy RC Micro; MonoPrice 9774; Klipsch HD Theater series 300 or 500 or 600 or 1000; M&K Movie; JBL SCS 145.2 or JBL CS480.
- Good low end surround sound speakers will cost somewhere around $300-$900 (crappy low end speakers will cost less than $200 and that's when it's not on sale) and mid end surround sound speakers will cost somewhere around $1,000 and high end surround sound speakers will cost more than $1,000.
- Note: Klipsch sued Monoprice for copy infringement. Monoprice's 9774 5.1 speakers (they don't have it anymore) copied Klipsch's Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers. (Monoprice 9774 would have cost about $248-$278 and Energy Take Classic for $399). (I saw the Energy Take Classic 5.1 speakers on sale at crutchfield for $200, but they are not on sale anymore atm).

- Some good high end receiver brands that I recommend are: Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon, and Yamaha.
- Good low end receivers will cost around $300-$900 (crappy receivers or stereo receivers might cost less than $200 and that's when it's not on sale) and high end receivers will cost more than $1,000.
= I recommend a new low end 7.1/7.2 system, but you have to find one on sale yourself tho. (If your on a budget then just get a low end 5.1/5.2 receiver, a high end 5.1/5.2 receiver is not worth the extra money and you would be better off getting a low end 7.1/7.2 receiver, high end 7.1/7.2 or 9.1/9.2 or 11.1/11.2 .ect receiver is only ok if your rich or if it's on a massive sale).

Some examples of good 5.1 or 5.2 channel audio/video receivers. (Overall=low end).
- Low end = Onkyo TX-SR313 or HT-RC430; Pioneer VSX-523-K; Yamaha RX-V375; Denon AVR-1312 or AVR-1513 or AVR-E200 or AVR-E300.
- High end = Onkyo TX-NR414; Pioneer VSX-823-K; Yamaha RX-V475; Denon AVR-1613 or Denon AVR-1713.

Some examples good 7.1 or 7.2 channel audio/video receivers. (Overall=high end).
- Low end = Onkyo HT-RC460 or TX-NR525 or TX-NR626 or TX-NR727; Pioneer VSX-1023-K or VSX-1123-K or VSX-43/73; Denon AVR-1913 or AVR-E400 or AVR-2113CI; Yamaha RX-V575 or RX-V675 or RX-V775WA.
- High end = Onkyo TX-NR818 or TX-NR1010 or TX-NR3010 or TX-NR5010; Pionerr Elite series SC-61 to 68; Denon AVR-2313CI or AVR-3313CI or AVR-4520CI.

how do i hook up speakers to my trunk if the system wiring leads to my doors?

Danny Dye

ok so i have 2 9 1/2 by 6 in xplode speakers i want to hook up in my trunk but the wiring for my 2002 Saturn L300 run both front and back doors.Without running the wires through the floor from the doors to the thrunk how can i hook up those speakers?

Answer
Are you using the stock head unit? If you're not i would run rca cables from the rca jack in the back unit through the kick plates and interior side moldings to the trunk( the lower moldings on the floor by the doors) hook up a small amp and done. Run the rca's through the pass side and the power wire for the amP on the driver side. If youre talking about tapping off the rear door speakers with a stock unit i wouldnt even try because it most likely would sound like crap but ift could be done, youre just going to ha e to pull the radio out the dash and find the wires powering the rear doors , split into each line and run the speaker wires as i described above withe the rca n power lines.

Laptop or Desktop?

The most demanding thing on your computer is the operating system, Vista home Premium. You may want a larger hard drive for your music / picture files.

New Desktop Computer Checklist:
Vista home premium (do not get Vista Basic)
Dual processor (any)
1-2 GB RAM (2 GB much better) with 2 memory slots free
DVD/ CD burner with dual layer DVD capability
Integrated Audio OK
Integrated Video OK but make sure it has a PCI Express X16 slot to allow upgrading video later.
200 GB hard drive or larger for your music/ picture files
10/100 Ethernet port (pretty much standard)

I recently purchased the JBL On Air Control 2.4G wireless speaker system without realizing my receiver (Sony) did not have preamp RCA outputs. Is there anyway I can buy a seperate preamp system to connect to my receiver that will then allow this to work? Thanks in advance for any help.

Answer
Unfortunately there is not.....without preamp outputs you have NO way to get the signal from your Sony receiver to the next receiver WITH preamp outputs and if you did you would have volume control problems and ground loop problems galore! If i were you and you really wanted to use these speakers you purchased I would upgrade my AVR with one that has the preamp outputs.

Hope this helps you.

any suggestions are greatly appreciated but i would like to keep the price down to a reasonable amount. <2-hundo.

i know bose can be pretty expensive for what they offer.

Answer
"bose-like" does that mean you want something that is overpriced junk?

All kidding aside. If you are after the best sound quality get a good set of speakers (preferably with a built in Amp). Then connect it to a wireless or bluetooth streaming module.

For the speakers I'd recommend AudioEngine A2 or A5s.

For streaming I'd get an Airport Extreme for your GFs iPhone. If you want bluetooth get one of these

How do I set up a wireless speaker system in my apartment?
So I've got a desktop PC with wireless internet. I want to get speakers in my lounge/diner and in my bedroom that will play the music from my PC e.g. itunes/spotify.
Is it possible? Is it complicated?

Answer
You can buy wireless speakers which have a transmitter which plugs into e pc audio socket and receivers in the speakers.

Or you could buy a video sender, and ignore the picture part of it, plug the audio into the pc and plug some speakers Into the receiver end.

Or you could use Bluetooth, depending how far away the receiver needs to be (usually 10m or 30ft maximum). You can buy bluetooth speakers or an adapter (Belkin do one) that you can plug existing speakers into, If your PC doesn't have Bluetooth you can buy a USB Bluetooth adapter very cheaply.

On the other hand, all these are a bit expensive and diddly. It ought be easier to buy an iPod or other mp3 player and plug it into speakers in each room whe you need them.

I'm not sure that you'll be able to play to several sets of speakers at once whatever you do. Certainly not using Bluetooth.

Where can I find a driver for my speaker system?

outcst92

I just bought a new desktop PC and am trying to install all the components that ran on my old computer. I have been able to find all the necessary software to properly work all my equipment except for my speaker system. My speakers are made by Hannspree and they are the Armor 2.1 channel speaker system. The product number is SS13-21U1-001 and I haven't been able to find a driver anywhere. Does anybody know where I can find one?

Answer
Unless they are USB speakers (or some other weird interface), you shouldn't need drivers specifically for the speakers. What you need are the drivers for your sound card.

Go to the computer manufacturer's website, find the drivers for your model number, and then download the sound drivers.

Logitech X 230 Speakers - Can I blow them by pumping hz to high?

Q. OK i have these speakers:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-230-multimedia-speaker-system/dp/B000FTNA3K

===========
I was wondering if i have a song that pumps the hz can I blow my bass. I am wondering if they have a limit of hz it can handle. I tried searching but got nothing.

Answer
Your question is, shall we say .... ambiguous.

What does "pumps the hz" mean? And "limit of hz"?

The nearest thing I can think of to your "hz" is Hz, which is the abbreviation for frequency.

If that is what you mean, then your "limit of hz it can handle" is given in the advertisement.
It is stated, stupidly, after "Media Included Qty:" as 40 - 20000 Hz.

40 to 20,000Hz is the range of frequencies which that 'speaker system will reproduce.
If you apply frequencies outside that range, no harm will be done to them.

Risk of damage will come from applying too much power: much more than 6 watts to either of the two satellite 'speakers or much more than 20 to the bass one.

I got new speakers and now I get no sound from my PC and my Mic is not working either?

I have a self-built computer and I use the on-board sound card of my Asus P8P67 Deluxe Motherboard. The speakers I got are the Logitech Z553 Speakers, and my Operating System is Windows 7 64bit Home Premium. I also have the Razer Carcharias Headphones, which I want to use for Gaming and communication (Skype, Teamspeak, etc.). I have updated all the drivers and tried many different ways to fix this problem, but now I don't know what to do.

Here's the set up I want to have: I want to have my new speakers to play all sound except for games and communication programs. To do this, I plugged it into the Front Speaker Output of my Motherboard, as instructed, and I plugged the Headset and Mic plug of my Headset into the Front Panel outputs (I've tried the back panel ones too, which I would prefer to use by the way, but they don't work either). I am getting absolutely no sound, no matter what I unplug, replug, etc. I've tried unplugging my microphone, my headset and even the speakers, and nothing seems to work. If I turn up my speakers to full volume, they make a quiet distortion noise. Also, if I plug the speakers into my phone and play music, they work perfectly, so the problem is with my computer.

Please help me someone. If you need more info, my email is mkilian96@gmail.com

Thanks in advance.
I forgot to mention, whenever I plug my mic in, my Realtek HD Audio Manager shows me that I have something plugged in to the Center/Subwoofer Plug as well, which I don't. Whenever I unplug my mic, that problem is fixed, but there's still no sound.
It also keeps "plugging and unplugging" this Center/Subwoofer plug, which is not actually plugged in the first place.

@Simon Yes I've checked if all drivers are up to date, which they are.

How do I find my speakers watt and rms rating?

on ... Air Wireless Speaker System (Pair) Review | AirPlay Speakers Reviews
speaker system ratings image

murphy

I have speakers from an old stereo system but I have no documents about how many watts and what RMS they are capable of. Is there anyway to find this info using a multimeter or a similar device?

Answer
The ratings of speakers are the maximum allowable power to the speaker. There is no way to figure that out with a multimeter. If you can get the make and model number of the speakers you may be able to find the information on the web. But if there are no labels on the back of the speakers to tell you it will probably be hard to find out that information.

What kind of amplifier should i get for my 2X60W speaker and 100W subwoofer?

Yohan

i have 2 60W speakers and planning to get a 100W subwoofer.. So i want to know what kind of an amplifier should i get and of what watts should it be..
Not much of an electronic person..
Please be kind enough to help.
Thanks

Answer
Actually wattage is not relevant to much of anything. You don't choose components based on watts. If you want a certain amount of output then you choose a system capable of a particular SPL (Sound Pressure Level) in dB. The number of watts required to achieve this can vary dramatically depending on numerous other factors. Generally larger speakers are more efficient but not always. Large horn loaded commercial cinema speakers can be driven with just one watt and probably be louder than you want. Cheap plastic PC speakers may not play loud enough for you no matter how much power you put into them. So in order to make good suggestions for you we need different information. We really don't care much about the speakers power rating, it's for the most part meaningless. The "nominal power rating" of the individual drivers within the speaker system can be useful but a much more important factor is the speaker sensitivity.

What is it you are wanting to do? You mention only 2 speakers and a subwoofer. I assume your subwoofer is powered? Receivers typically have "pre-amp" output for the subwoofer so if your subwoofer is passive you will need an amplifier just for it in addition to the receiver. If you are not interested in surround you need to look for a stereo receiver with the ability to connect a powered subwoofer. A better idea would probably be to go ahead and get an Audio/Video Receiver (AVR) so you can add a center speaker and surrounds if you ever decide you want that. http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MANR1403

Edit: I have to disagree with David E. Speaker power ratings are not so cut and dry. A "60 watt" speaker can be easily blown with less than half that if the amplifier is clipping hard enough. It can also handle 1000 watts if the burst is short enough. Most speakers are destroyed by amplifier clipping not by clean power. Choosing an amplifier rated for 80% of the speaker rating is not in any way a guarantee of not blowing the speakers. If you like to play it loud and especially if you like turning the bass up, speakers will survive longer connected to an amplifier with many times higher power rating than the speaker than connected to an amplifier 80% of the speaker rating. Heavy clipping of the smaller amplifier will melt them much faster than clean power that exceeds their rating by 2 or 3x. Both situations will destroy them but the 80% rated amplifier will destroy them faster given the same gain settings. That is the 80% is attempting to send the speakers 2x or 3x their rating but is being clipped at 80% of their rating.

I've seen this "80%" suggestion numerous times here on Yahoo and I don't know where it comes from but it is very bad advice.

You're not going to find what you are looking for. For wireless speakers to work, you must have a wireless receiver. You can't simply transmit your laptop's sound directly to a wireless speakers. You will have to connect your laptop to a wireless surround sound receiver and then the audio will be transmitted from the receiver to the speakers.

Having said that, there are quite a few reasons for staying away from wireless speakers. For the most part, these systems are a gimick.

First is that "wireless" speakers aren't truly wireless. While the audio signal my be transmitted wirelessly, the speaker still need power in order to function. This means that each speaker will need an AC outlet. This in itself can be a big inconvenience. Not only can it be unsightly, but you might not have power outlets where you need your speakers.

Another reason is signal interference. There are many devices out there that can cross-talk with your wireless speakers. Some of these devices are cell phones, wireless alarm systems, and other wireless speaker systems. If a neighbor next to your condo also has a wireless system, you may end up pulling your hair out. And I can almost guarantee that you have a cell phone, right?

Dirty power is another issue that many people face after getting their new wireless surround sound system home. Dirty power is a rapidly fluctuating power feed and can be cause by almost anything that has a motor, such as refrigerators, washers and dryers, and more. If these components are on the same circuit as your surround sound then the amplifiers inside of each speaker will simply amplify that dirty power and you will get a dirty audio signal.

While it's almost impossible to completely get rid of dirty power, you can use power filters at each wall outlet to help tame the fluctuation. Unfortunately these power filters are about $50 each and look a bit like a short extension cord or surge protector.

In the end, what you may be looking at instead of a few thin speaker wires, which happen to be fairly easy to hide, is a bunch of speakers plugged into power filters which are then plugged into several power outlets around the room. And after all of this, your audio will more than likely suck.

And as I pointed out earlier. You would still need to connect your laptop to your receiver, so the laptop would no longer be wireless.

how to get my 2008 dodge grand caravan VES to play through wireless headphones not the speaker system?

Rachel

My van has 2 DVD screens and 2 wireless headphones and my van is currently in a shared mode where you can hear the DVD through the speaker system. The VES manual says you can turn that off so you can hear radio through the speakers and the DVD through the headphones, however, it does not explain how to turn this share off or on. Help?

Answer
I just got headphones for my 2009 Dodge Grand Caravan from AudioVideo2go and had the same problem. The remote controller has a little headphone icon on it. You have to press that to turn the headphones on. Once you press that headphone button a little headphone icon will appear on the radio. after that, the headphones will receive a wireless signal. :) Hope that helps!

I'm on a tight budget and want to know if there is a sound system that someone can put together for me for under 500 . Thanks for any help , I need it .

Answer
let us know what your wanting out of the system man. Are you a bass lover, or more of a Crisp clean music kind of guy, or do you want clean sounding music with a nice touch of bass? if you LOVE bass and want a system that bumps pretty hard. i reccomend 2 subwoofers.

if you listen to lots of rap go with 12s or 15s they are BOOMY

if you mostly listen to rock/metal go with 10s

if you listen to LOTS of genres of music i would go with 2 12s as they are mostly boomy yet slightly punchy.

Rockford fosgate, Polk Audio, Kicker, Soundstream, (not soundstorm) , and memphis make some great entry level affordable subwoofers, and speakers.

I am looking to buy a speaker system. I need a sub woofer and at least 4 speakers in the set. Please give me suggestions.

Answer
Energy, Fluance and Audioengine are great brands to consider. They build combinations of smart quality products that perform with great competence. Check out HSU for a subwoofer. This should set you up very nicely.
