What computer sound system can you suggest, for a guy who wants to make electronic music?

Hey everyone
Christmas is coming up and i wanted to add a few wishes to my wishlist. Does anyone out here have any recommendations for a great computer sound system (speakers and bass). In particular, something that doesnt cost much more than 250£, but still has a kicking bass and top-notch sound quality, if that is even possible.
On a side note, do you have any recommendations for a good midi keyboard?

Answer
You really need to go out and listen for yourself. For everyone that claims that brand x or model y is the best, there is an equal opposite opinion. What some people call deep bass others won't, or they will find it loose or boomy. Since you will be making electronic music through them, they will essentially be part of the instrument, which is probably not a good thing. With electric guitar, the speakers are a big part of the sound, which is why so many guitar plug ins for recording have speaker emulation. You will probably want the speakers as neutral or 'clinical' sounding as possible, to avoid having the sounds dependent on your particular speakers. Also, make sure you look at the issue of durability. You can put out some pretty nasty waveforms digitally, and this can fry high frequency drivers and crossovers in cheaper speakers. Another concern would be what listening environment the speakers will be placed in. Near field monitors are usually not very good at imaging, except in a very tightly defined area. In other words, high frequency beaming means the treble response will drop off if the listener is not right in the sweet spot, where the full range comes through, so these would not make good speakers to fill a room. There's a ton of choices, so your best bet is to stick with speakers sold by music stores, rather than trying to get the most watts for the least money. Of all the websites I've found, http://www.Sweetwater.com has the widest selection, best organization and most thorough descriptions and reviews overall. So, I'd start there and narrow down the choices to something manageable and then search for a couple of more reviews on other sites, and then search for the best price/service deal.

As for a midi keyboard, that depends on what you are looking for: a strict midi controller, a keyboard with built in sound capability, or something with integrated control surface, such as transport controls for start/stop while recording, pads for percussion, etc. Something else to research at Sweetwater.

What computer speakers are best for me?

Brett S

I want a set of good quality computer speakers for under $500 that can easily double as a tv surround sound system like something i could hook up to both at the same time and just switch between one or the other. I have a small apartment so buying both computer speakers and a surround sound system doesnt make sence.

Can i connect a car subwoofer and amplifier to a PA speaker system?

speaker system in car

Derek

I have a PA speaker system which is very loud and has great sound but has absolutely no bass. However, I also have a 15 Alpine Type R car subwoofer powered by a Kenwood 1800 Watt Mono car Amp. I would love to be able to connect this sub and amp to my PA system to create a great sound system for my house but I have no idea how to do it or if it is even possible... Can anybody help?

Answer
Yes, this can be done but things to consider is 1) How to power the car amp in your house? You could bring a cr battery in but that's only going to suppy the electrical current you need for a short time, then you will need to recharge it. My suggestion would be to invest in a "Regulated Power Suppy" to convert your house 120vac current to DC current like your car's electrical provides. Also to get the max power from you kenwood amp to you alpine car sub, you're going a power supply capable of delivering between 13.5 -14.4 volts DC which is the average range for most car electrical alternator voltage and what your car amp need to produce max power. ) Then ther's the matter of feeding the signal from your PA to you car amp. The safest way for this would be to use a "Line Level" signal say from the rec , or Record out jacks usually Red & White (RCA) type to the "Line In" Inputs of your car amp. After that it's just a matter of playing your music through your PA and adjusting the level on you kenwood to match your listening preference. Just remember when you increase the volume of the PA you may need to increase the level on your car amp as well since you are feeding a line level signal from the PA to the car amp. the PA volume control will not have and effect on the amp volume. In short what you want to do can indeed be done but there are easier ways to add the bass you want to you PA. Hope this helped you out.You may email me if you like at rudedog5876@gmail.com for some other options you want to consider.

Where should I go to purchase and install a good car speaker system?

Brian

I have a Celia with it's stock speaker system. I am looking for better speakers as well as a good subwoofer. What store's should I look into visiting to help me with this process?

Thanks.

Answer
you need to go to sonicelectronix.com this site is the best. They gurantee you that they have the lowest price. Im actually ordering 2 Alpine SWR-1242D Type R's (12 inch) and i've looked around and they are the lowest price. This is a website retailer so they ship the stuff to you. I'm not sure where you live so not sure where to go to get them installed but i live in michigan and im going to get them installed at car tunes, they're local. I've heard best buy is a good place and bad place to get installation for car audio so idk u might have to do some research on that. Hope i helped good luck.

What amplifier i need for my car PC project?

Alexis C

I have a 2008 VW golf GT with the standard 8 speakers package and i am planning to put a car pc. I will remove the oem Head Unit and put a 7" inch lcd monitor. I will need an amplifier to connect the speakers to it and then the amplifier to the carpc. My question is what type of amplifier i will need? I will have to buy 2 4-channel amplifiers?

Thanks in advance

Answer
A 4-channel with an optional mono amp for subs.

For a "carputer" the idea is to have a "non-hard drive" based computer that runs stand alone Windows XP/Vista from a Bootable USB drive that runs the music player of your choice using plugins.

Your MP3's are stored on another USB drive that can be removed for editing.

This all ties into your sound system (amps, subs/speakers).

No hard drive means nothing will crash. A touch screen display is really the only other peice of equipment needed that can be custom mounted in your dash as you say.

Look up BartPE and Sherpya. These two guys found a way to run the full GUI of Windows XP on a USB drive (under 600 Mb).

A shuttle style computer is all you need for the computer. You can even have 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby digital.

Here is a good place to start:

I have an Insignia subwoofer that came with and insignia computer speaker set?

Nick

is there any way i can hook it up in my car?

Answer
Logitech Z313 Speaker System is referred as a 2.1 speaker system (2 satellite speakers plus 1 sub-woofer). If you want to hear deep bass in your music, a sub-woofer is a must, and it should be placed on the floor for best results. Compared to Logitech's Z520 2.0 (only 2 speakers, no sub-woofer) speaker system, which I recently also tested, it is quite apparent that Z313 has much deeper bass, although the Z313 system costs less than half the price of the Z520.

What is a good stereo player for an older car?

Kalla

I drive a 1997 Nissan and I would like a new stereo for cheap. Maybe under $50 with a USB port and good base. Any ideas?

Answer
I could not find any quality unit under $50. The one I found for you has 22 rms watts per channel x 4.
Most cd players now have 17-18 rms watts. This unit has USB port, 3 band equalizer, and several sound modes. You will be able to boost bass.

http://www.techronics.com/caraudio_15670_Kenwood-KDC-202U-AM-FM-CD-Car-Stereo-Receiver-w-Front-USB-Auxiliary.html

Read reviews on this unit here:

Keep in mind, that only subwoofer can give you those nice low frequencies. I will give you a link to a couple that I think you will like.

You can put this one in the trunk or on the back seat, behind driver, or on the floor behind the driver seat. It can face any direction. The amp is part of the box. Clean lines, powerful, very popular brand name.
http://www.techronics.com/caraudio_15324_Rockford-Fosgate-P300-10-Single-10-inch-300-Watt-Subwoofer-Enclosure.html

If you like a more rugged look, perhaps this one. This unit also has an amplifier as part of the box. It makes installation very easy. Simply splice into rear speaker wires and that will be the input signal.
For power, you can just plug into the cigarette lighter.

If you install quick disconnect connectors, you can easily move them from cabin to the trunk and back.

If you have more questions, email me. Make sure your settings will allow me to reply. It's all coded, so I don't get to see your real name or your real email address.

One more powered subwoofer. Small and powerful, 200 rms watts. Nice company.

What kind of speaker/preamp system do I need for an AT-LP60 Turntable?

fightforlo

I just got an audio technica AT-LP60 turntable (vinyl records) that I need to get hooked up with a decent speaker system. Any speaker recommendations? Also, I already have a Yamaha EMX 62M amp, would I need a preamp to go into this system? Do you also need a preamp to go into an LP-dedicated set of speakers?

Answer
You connect your turntable to the Yamaha mixer (EMX 64M) and then you will need a power amplifier to connect that to and then connect the speaker to the power amplifier. Stand alone power amplifier are mainly for the higher end of the audio. You can however go to Best Buy with a musical instrument department and find a power amplifier that DJ use. Or you can find a receiver that has a phono line input. Hope this will help you out.

i have a DVD player without an amplifier. IF i use a 5.1 speaker system with it, what will i miss. someone told me that i can't vary the bass, treble etc with this system. please guide me. also if u could tell me some tips for choosing the speaker system.

Answer
Most 5.1 speaker systems are made for computers and they use a surround sound card in the computer to divide the sound if you hook one of those speaker systems up to your DVD player all you will get is stereo at best...you need some kind of processor that will divide the signal into the 5.1 surround the easiest and lest expensive way is to get a Home Theater in a box better sound will come from a receiver and home theater speakers but you cannot use computer speakers with that you will need to get home theater speakers...because computer speakers are powered and home theater speakers are not...

On each speaker you can click to get the specs. Doesn't take much to drive these puppies, and on most their maximum power handling should suffice. Click at the bottom of the page to see all of them.

Can I use bluetooth speakers to watch movies on my laptop with good quality?

orderph72

I have a laptop which I use mainly for watching movies, and I'm thinking about upgrading my 2.1 speaker system to one that has bluetooth capabilities (A2DP & AVRCP). No wires around my laptop would make it easier to move around my room. But will I be able to watch movies using the bluetooth-connected speakers with good audio quality?

Answer
Bluetooth is a digital interface. Provided it has enough bandwidth for digital audio (2-ch is about 1.5 Mbit/s) and there are no drops due to distance, a digital interface has nothing to do with audio quality. Audio quality depends on the quality of the speakers.

To move around your room, you still need power. If you use the battery, most laptops run at lower speed to preserve energy, and that may cause playback problems. Having a blue-tooth transmitter, means even more power drain from your battery. So, do test first your laptop in battery mode.

Will using a Y splitter hurt the audio quality on my PC Speakers?

Masters

My old 2.1 speaker system on my computer died. But I think it just the amp that died not the speakers. I bought a new set, and they use the same RCA connectors.

If I use a Y splitter, will it hurt the sound quality much?

Answer
No. It is not going to degrade the sound quality coming out of your computer. Hope this will help you out.

At my beach house I got a huge terrace, enough to fill 40 people sitting down at huge tables like those cinemas where u can eat at, I bought a 120 inch proyector screen, A nice Wxga 3D 3 LCD chip proyector for a nice big, sharp, clear and bright screen. Now the only thing left, is the speakers.
I'm trying to get a VERY powerfull 7.1 surround system, I saw the sony BDV-N8100W but we all know that 1000 watts is not the output, but instead the input. And I'm having a hard time trying to find these speakers. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thaks in advance

Answer
A 120" screen, 3D projector, and searching through boxes of Cracker Jacks for the audio system... That Sony isn't even close to what you need!

There are a number of options, one of which might be commercial cinema speakers... http://www.jblpro.com/catalog/General/ProductFamily.aspx?FId=30&MId=1 This is a relatively inexpensive way to get a lot of sound. These are highly efficient and thus don't need much power but despite that I would probably not use the built in amplifiers in a receiver. You could use a receiver with preamp outputs and use external amplifiers on at least the left/right/center speakers. http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/xpa3

You don't necessarily have to use commercial cinema speakers but you do need real audio equipment for a system like you are describing. The Sony is literally a Cracker Jack box toy. Something like the CBT-36 http://www.parts-express.com/term/cbt36?srch=CBT36 could be ideal for something like this because of it's ability to provide uniform sound both in frequency response and amplitude over a large listening area. This is a kit however and unfortunately there is no matching center speaker. With everything it may actually be about the same price or just a little more expensive than the JBL Cinema speakers. (Disclaimer: I am associated with Audio Artistry, the manufacturer of the CBT36)

The problem is that none of the typical mass market brands that are frequently promoted here on Yahoo Answers are any good. There are just no good options which is why I've always built my own. If you have no choice but to stick with a mass market brand at least get something large and efficient enough to fill the listening area with sound. Something along the lines of this at a bare minimum... http://www.klipsch.com/rf-82-ii-floorstanding-speaker

For a receiver the minimum would be something like this... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NAT748 This receiver has preamp outputs so you can use an external amplifier for the left/right/center as mentioned above.

In a very very large space it's going to be difficult to get earth shaking bass so you either need very capable subwoofers are just live with a much higher cut off frequency. HSU makes some nice inexpensive subwoofers... http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-15h.html

You're right, the system is not about RMS watts, it's about speaker efficiency, acoustic coupling etc. The Sony isn't 1000 watts anyway and it's speakers have no capability at all. Here is what 1000 watts looks like (and this is a cheap one... but good) http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/xpa5 Note that it weighs 72 lbs... If an HTiB were really 1000 watts it would too.

If you really want your own movie theater with sound to match your 120" screen and 40 person capacity you simply can't use toy audio equipment. The above suggestion are just examples but it should give you a better idea of the caliber of equipment you're going to need.

Edit: I agree with Octep, a set of vintage Altec A7 "Voice of the Theatre" would be ideal. Here is a "Buy it Now" on Ebay for $1800. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ALTEC-LANSING-A7-VINTAGE-PA-SPEAKERS-416A-N8500-8A-511-802-8B-HORNS-DRIVERS-PAIR-/350799965012 I have a set of these for the nostalgic value only.

Another vintage Altec option, the Model 19 Studio Monitor... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Altec-Model-19-Pair-Walnut-Excellent/141007691588?_trksid=p2045573.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555012%26algo%3DPW.MBE%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D15414%26meid%3D8849409576784881228%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D7406%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D350799965012%26

What is the best home theater system I can buy for about $1000?

Mr Bean

I don't mind buying separate receiver and speakers as long as I get a very good surround sound and a picture perfect video signal. Please elaborate. Thanks!

Answer
This is probably the best deal I have found within your budget. $800 for 5.1 Klipsch speakers packaged with a Yamaha 7.1 receiver (4 HDMI, 1080P upscaling) and Yamaha iPod Dock

Hey, I'm looking for some cheaper surround sound speakers for my bedroom. It's kind of a smaller room and I need something that will easily hookup to my 32" Samsung 720p. And only a couple hundred at most, I'm not looking for the most fancy, just something that could make my horror movies work for me a bit more. Any recommendations?

Answer
Surround sound is one thing. You need a 5.1 speaker set and a receiver. Sound bars or 2.1 systems can plug right into the TV. If your budget is $200 don't bother with a surround sound system. The only ones you'll find for that amount are garbage. So look for a sound bar or a 2 speaker and sub configuration. Check CNet.com for reviews of such devices.

What is a better for sound a Sony RHTG800 or 2.1 channel sound system?

I am going to buy a sony tv but I don't know what is a better buy. I like the sony, but it gets bad reviews.
my price range is unlimited and I care about video and sound
sony stand with speakers
I might try something different
Also for hdtv Directv or Cable

Answer
Hi.ricky p. That won't give you a good sound system with all the speakers crammed into the TV Stand.I don't know how they achieve the impression of rear channel sound from the two front speakers. Have you actually heard it ?Better to have a proper 5.1 surround sound system with three front speakers and two rear speakers, plus a sub. .2.1 will only give you stereo ,if that is all you want. Lets know what you decide.Have you thought about an Amplifier ? Speakers are a personal choice as they all sound different. If you can give me a price range ,i'm sure we'll get something good. Basically what i am asking is are you more of a video person or is sound quality your main concern?

EDIT..(1)....Thanks for the reply.
I just want to mention a few things to keep in mind when putting a system together. In any audio system, the signal is passed down a chain.Sound travels from the Source components [DVD or CD Player VCR,Phono,Satellite, etc.],to the Control Components[Pre-Amp,or Surround Processing Pre-Amp],to the Power amplifiers, and then to the Speakers. The base rule is the signal can never be improved within the chain once it has started. It can only be maintained or degraded. Therefore audio and video reproduction are damage control jobs.If we don't get quality information from the Source, the Pre-Amp,Power Amps.and Speakers cannot improve the signal. The Pre-Amp and Power Amps.just make a bigger copy of the signal, which the Speakers reproduce. No equipment can improve the signal given to it.What is generated from the Source component will be reproduced ,but not improved,in the chain. Therefore the goal is to change the signal as little as possible. You would be surprised how difficult this is for some people to understand. If their sound is no good they always blame the speakers, when the problem is at the beginning of the chain.

Ok,down to business. The construction, size, shape and furnishings of the room will influence the sound from the speakers. Most people buy a surround sound Receiver because of convenience having all the processing circuits and amplifiers in the one box.The problem with a Receiver is that it only has a single power supply to power the preamp section the tuner section and five or more power amp sections. As a result sound quality is not as smooth, because the demands of the power amp section affect the preamp section.Preamps are the heart of the system.
A separate Pre-Amp./Processor and a separate 5,6,7,or more Power Amplifier Unit will definiately give you a better sound and probably better video processing as well.

Loudspeakers are the most difficult component to buy because they all add their own "sound"to the sound they are reproducing.Everyone has their own preference when it comes to buying new speakers. However, the subjective musical preference should not be confused with the objective task of music reproduction ,that is to reproduce the original sound exactly as it was performed. This is why there are no "jazz speakers" or "rock speakers" or "classical speakers "---just poor, good, better, and great speakers.
There are two things that all good speakers have in common. One is a seamless sound from the very low bass to the very highest highs(you don't hear the individual drivers). The other is the ability to reproduce voices well. All good speakers do these two things.Other attributes of a good speaker are, correct tonal balance, precise imaging, clarity, wide dynamic range and good solid bass response.

EDIT.(2).. I should ask you if you are going ahead with the Sony System or have you decided to try something else ?

When you say you like the Sony but it gets bad reviews, are you talking about the TV or the Sony stand with the inbuilt amplifier/prosessor and speakers ?

EDIT.(3)....I will leave the choice of the Source component up to you. One of the best PreAmp/Processor/PowerAmp combinations is made by NAD.[ designed in Great Brittain ] This combination would be hard to beat for the money. It got very good reviews regarding sound quality and video processing.

EDIT...(4) If you only want 2 channel stereo then the best amplifiers are British made [like the NAD] Check out ARCAM,MISSION,QUAD,CAMBRIDGE,MUSICAL FIDELITY,NAIR, ROTEL NAD, AUDIO LAB.

Loudspeakers are a personal choice so i will leave them up to you if you decide to buy them

How can I Hook up an external subwoofer and still have my computer speakers playing?

Shawn Nutl

Just a regular computer speaker system minus the speakers, just the subwoofer. So the subwoofer plugs in and plays fine into the headphone jack and everything, but i would like to know how to play the subwoofer and my laptop speakers at the same time? I am using windows seven premium, and i am assuming i have to go to device manager and delete a file, but what file? or is it something completely different?!

Answer
Its something completely different

Its built into the sound driver to cut off your laptop speakers when you are using an external speaker system. You'd have to write a whole new driver.

What is a good desktop computer speaker system?

palman18

I want to buy some new computer speakers since my old cheap speakers broke and I'm sick of using a gaming headset for music and movies. I am looking to spend around $150-200 on a good speaker system. I am a "semi-audiophile" and I appreciate good sound. I would prefer a system with a good balance of highs, mids, and lows and would rather have a good 2.1 system than a cheap surround sound system. I would prefer a system with a subwoofer, but if there are any that have good bass without one, I am open to it. I don't have a sound card on my computer, but I am open to buying one if it makes a considerable difference. Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Here are a few speaker systems that fall within your price range.

Speaker Impedance connection?

D. M.

I want to hook up two Bose 151 outdoor speakers to my RCA RT2600 home theater system. Will this work?

Answer
The Bose 151 owners manual says:

Compatibility
⢠Compatible with amplifiers or receivers rated 10 to 100 watts per channel at 4 to 8 ohms
⢠50W IEC continuous power handling at 6 ohms

The RCA Spec says:

⢠650-Watt Total Power
Two channels driven into 8 ohms, from 40hz-
20khz with no more than 0.9% THD.
⢠100-Watts Left, Right, Center,
Surround Left and Surround Right

Each channel of the RCA delivers 100-Watts Peak power, or aprox. 50 Watts RMS which is exactly within the spec for your speakers.

Just don't connect more than one speaker to each speaker output on the RCA because it wants to see a constant 8 ohm impedance.

Good luck!

Which surround sound setting is best?

best speaker system for denon 1912
on Denon Avr 1713 Receiver Deals Compare Review Buy On | Travel Advisor ...
best speaker system for denon 1912 image

Brian

I recently bought a 5.1 system along with a Denon AVR-1912 receiver. I'm confused as to which surround sound setting to put with what. I guess it matters what the BR disk has and what the broadcast is formatted in, but in general what should I use? What's the difference between stereo and direct? Pure direct? Dolby digital, DTS surround?
What do I use for sports, HBO shows, video games, and blu rays?

Answer
Avoid stereo, that is the only front 2 speakers, so no surround sound. Direct is what you will want to use most of the time, as long as there is a surround sound source coming in to the receiver (so a blu ray, DVD, and most HD tv channels). When there is only a stereo signal coming into the receiver (SD tv channels, some DVDs) you will want to use another setting such as Dolby Digital or Pro Logic. Choose these based on what sounds the best to you, they're all very similar.

Now you may be asking, how do I know if it's a surround source or a stereo source? To figure that out, set the receiver to direct. If there is only sound coming out of the front two speakers, it is a stereo source. If there is sound coming from the centre and surround speakers as well, it is a surround source and you should keep it on direct.

A good home theater system for a PS3 + 1080p HDTV?

nighthawk0

Hey, like i mentioned in the title, im looking for a basic home theater system to use with my ps3 and HDTV, nothing fancy, something with a subwoofer and those surround stereos. Nothing expensive please.

Answer
for a great in expensive HT system. You could try buying bose speakers and a nice subwoofer . a great receiver would be either a denon avr 1912 or a pioneer 1022. they run about $400-$500. but its worth it and they are future proof so just in case you want to upgrade your speakers you can with that receiver. you could go to a Best Buy and they have lots of great in expensive speakers. if you want really good, for not so cheap , it would be bose. I say bose are the high end brand out of the low end speakers.

Can you connect a surround sound speaker system to an LG M2232D TV?

speaker system optical image

John

I was wandering if I would be able to use a surround sound speaker system with this make/model of TV?

Answer
No. You can not connect any speakers to a tv. TV today does not have any speaker terminals for you to connect any speakers. The only audio output it provides is through an optical audio output. It is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a AVR, Home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar only. Hope this will help you out.

Connecting and External Powered Speaker to TV with Optical Output Cable?

Mark

I have a brand new Samsung 32" HDTV and it has an optical audio output that I would like to connect to a external speaker system. It is a tower speaker, self amplified sold at Brookstone (Big Blue Media Tower) and it has a optical input. I know it will work as that is how Brookstone advertises it for a TV, kind of like a sound bar. My question is that Samsung says I have to control the speaker volume with the speaker remote and others online say if I set my TV menu to external speaker, the external speaker volume can be controlled via the TV remote, please clarify if you know the answer before I buy this system, thank you for your help.

Answer
To control the speaker volume you have to use the speaker remote.

vidhyarthi

hi everyone, im planning to buy car audio in the uk but want to use it indian made cars in india, would the dimension fit to the indian car? would there be any problems while fixing?
thanks in advance

Answer
I guess you mean a stereo head unit, not car audio, car audio is all about sound systems in cars, like wiring, subs, speakers, head units, amps, capacitors...etc,

then if you mean a stereo "head unit" : they come in two sizes, one dins and double dins, you mostly need a regular one din stereo, the double din ones come for not very common cars like chryslers and couple others, make sure what size the slot of the stereo is, then buy it, I suggest buying brands like pioneer, alpine, jvc, kenwood, clarion

have fun, i hope this helps

How can i improve my english?

sebin

I am from india and i ve been studing english for 4 years but still feel difficulty to speak and write.how can i improve my english or is it imposible for me?

Answer
Actually, broadening/improving one's language skills is a very broad concept, it should be done in more than one ways at the same time which is highly recommended. One can NOT become better ONLY in one area, say, chatting or speaking, one MUST improve skills in ALL dimensions of the language!

Learning language well requires being as active as possible and making the learning as FUN for oneself as possible. Taking lessons is always important, but equally important are these:

1) Listen/watch: Keep listening to internet radio stations like BBC, watch TV shows in English (use only subtitles, NOT voice dubbing in case you are not a native English speaker!), etc.

2) Write/communicate: Try to find discussion forums from the web about things that you find interesting and FUN (music/various artists, hobbies, etc.) and start communicating there with other people using only English. Start using instant messaging systems in case you find some new friends or start emailing them. Please do NOT be afraid of making mistakes or hesitating, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times! The more you enjoy communicating, the better!

3) Buy yourself a proper dictionary, and each time when you see a strange word that you do not understand, look it up. Putting words into their CONTEXT is one of the best ways to broaden one's vocabulary and grammar knowledge, the more you read and write the better. Memorising is NOT the best way to go with learning vocabulary, grammar or any other language areas! For idioms, you should buy an all-English dictionary which explains the words in English and shows you examples of how to use the words.

The main point in ANY language learning is to make it as fun as possible for yourself. Try to find topics that INTEREST you, read online newspapers (Times, Guardian, Independent...), listen to BBC/NBC and other radio stations online, if you find a discussion forum for e.g. your favourite hobby or your idols in music do participate there, etc. The key word here is CONTEXT, which means that it is easier to learn new words and their usage as well as grammar when you use/see them in their real CONTEXT. The more you see and hear the new words in their context and the more you use them in your speech & writing, the easier it becomes to remember their meanings and correct spelling. Do NOT be afraid of making mistakes though, because even native speakers do make mistakes and do hesitate at times!

I'm sorry there is NO EASY WAY out with this, one really must develop language skills in ALL these language "levels" or dimensions in order to reach better language skills!!

Last but not least: NEVER EVER use ANY online translators, they are nothing but utter rubbish!! English is practically EVERYWHERE in the online world these days, you just have to use your imagination to find it! Learning pace is always personal, it takes the time it takes so there is no reason to hurry it up too much. If you do, you will not learn so well. Also, please learn the basics of the standard English first before advancing to finer details like dialects/accents. A word of warning though: Do stay well away from overrated, overpriced and overhyped language "gimmicks" such as Rosetta Stone, they really are NOT worth for checking out!

Good luck!

What would the best stereo system set up be for a 93 Ford Explorer?

Andrew

I am not looking for sheer volume, sound quality is my first priority. It is my understanding that a component speaker system is the best for audio imaging but ease of installation and cost are limiting factors. Taking that into consideration, what would the best set up be? High quality full-range stock replacements or lower quality component speakers? Specific speakers suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
The most important aspect of ANY audio system is speaker placement. The quality of the speakers would be a very close second. Very few vehicles lend themselves to a good imaging audio system. Mainly because of the poor factory locations. Doors are by far the worst location to put a speaker in because of the pathlength difference between the left and right speaker. The dashboard would be better but usually suffers from windshield reflection problems. The location that is most likely to produce good imaging is the kick panel location. But kick panel installs are not for every vehicle especially trucks and SUVs in which one sits up high and alot of the sound would be blocked by your legs, steering wheel, and the lower dash. Still there are some exceptions. If you can see both your kickpanels when you sit in your normal driving position in your Explorer then you should be able to hear speakers installed there. If not then you will have to resort to the doors as I don't believe you have dash locations. If I'm correct then your vehicle has 6"x8" speakers in each door. If that is all you have to work with then I suggest that you get 6 1/2" two-way speakers with adaptors to fit instead. No need to spend extra money on components. In the audio world, less is more. The simpler a speaker is, the better. As long as it covers the frequency range. In other words, the coaxial speakers cover the same range as their component counterpart. Anything more than a two-way is overkill and just a way for the manufacturers to make more money. Any shape other than round is inferior in regards to sound quality. Sure the 6"x8" would put out more bass SPL but it will exhibit higher levels of distortion because the oblong shape doesn't operate as linear as a round speaker does. A good 6 1/2" puts out plenty of bass. If you have a 4 door then I suggest you buy the same kind of speaker except go to the next smaller size which would probably be a 5 1/4". The reason being because you want to obtain that "bass up front" image so you want the bigger speakers up front. You can always upgrade later to a powered subwoofer that will handle all the low frequencies. With your main speakers crossed over just right, this will take the bass load off of the main speakers and improve clarity as well as reliability. I can't recommend any specific speakers because everyone's hearing and musical preference is different. Stick to reputable brands. Just take some CDs of music you are familiar with when you audition speakers. Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions. It's your money afterall. Your interior will affect the overall sound so take this into account when shopping around. Leather wil reflect the higher frequencies so soft dome tweeters usually sound best with that. Fabric will absorb the frequencies so a hard dome might sound better in that environment. If you use a hard dome tweeter and you have leather, it might sound too harsh. And if you have fabric and use a soft dome, it might sound too dull. Got it? Another thing I highly recommend is sound deadening with something like Dynamat Xtreme. At least the doors. This will dramatically improve your system's bass and dynamic range. I hope this helps. Good luck and happy listening.
