that could handle mahler #2 or Verdi Requiem at max volume without distortion? I have klipsch 2.1 THX system for two years and I am not happy with it. Any suggestions?

Answer
About a year ago a did a lot of research and invested in a pair of Creative GigaWorks T40s. The sound quality and depth of bass response from these units is truly remarkable. I particularly didn't really want to have a separate woofer unit and these speakers have continued to impress me time after time in all genres of music. No, they won't quite shake the house down, but if you want a full and realistic sound from your PC speakers with no unnecessary gimmicks and plenty of volume if you want it, I would recommend the T40s wholeheartedly. Added to this, they're not expensive at all, being far less than £100/$150 per pair if you shop around.

Be assured that, being a manager in the music business for over 30 years and a compulsive listener to all sorts of music, I am VERY fussy about the sound of my music (which is why I can't listen to MP3s). You won't go wrong with these babies!

What kind of Sound systems are the best?

l940528

There are so many kinds of sound systems out there these days.
I am a very sensitive listener and want to buy a sound system that can play classical (and purely classic, mostly violin concertos) music like it is being performed on a stage. Can anyone please give me background info (i have NO knowledge on this area) as well as suggestions and pricing?
Thank you in advance!

Answer
If price is no object, and you are a critical listener, you should go with a pre/pro setup. You will have a pre amp, which is what you will connect all of your sources to, then you will have an external power amplifier which is what will supply the power to drive your speakers.

I can give you some brands to look at

For pre amps- you can use pretty much any avr with pre-outs which is what you will use to connect your power amp.

*Denon
*Onkyo
*Yamaha
*Marantz

For power amps, I am guessing you ware wanting a 2ch stereo setup.

*Krell
*Mark Levinson
*Lexicon
*Classe
*McIntosh(can be VERY pricey)

All of those power amp brands can be pretty pricey, but if you are wanting the best performance you can get, and you are wanting it to sound like a live performance, those brands are the way to go.

You will also need some speakers:

Some notable brands worth looking at:

*Bowers & Wilkins
*Monitor Audio
*Martin Logan
*Polk Audio
*JBL
*Klipsch
*Paradigm

Of course, you will need to go to a store/dealer and audition the equipment you are interested in. Nobody can just sit her and tell you what sounds the best. Everybody hears things differently, what sounds good to one person may sound like crap to someone else... or vice-versa.

I was wondering what the crossovers should be set for all the speakers? The Audyssey has the crossover settings as
Front: 80 Hz
Center: 40 Hz
Surround: 150 Hz
SurrBack: 60 Hz

The sub has a switch that's called 'Phase' that goes from 0 to 180 degrees. It also has Lowpass (Hz) dial that goes from 40-120. It also has a dial for gain from minimum to max.

If someone can help me, I'm trying to find out what are the best settings for the best sound.

Thank you for any help that can be given, I really appreciate it.

Answer
I would cross over the OWM 3 a little lower 120HZ or 100HZ if you can its really not recommeded that you lower the cross-over point but I would lower it to 100 Hz then rerun Audyssey to see if it will hold, also I would raise the center channel cross over to 60 hz or even 75 to 80 Hz to match the right and left fronts then rerun Audyssey to see if it will hold....Phase is going to be determined by personal perferance and your particular room set up but usually in phase with the other speakers is best but not always....180 may work better in some situations try both if you cannot tell the difference leave it at zero....leave your low pass filter off or at 120hz and use the AV receiver to set the subwoofer cross-over point lower your cross-over point should be 100hz or lower usually the lower the better down to about 75hz but your speakers need to be able to play at that level also other wise you get a gap....

Denon AVR-1912 av receiver, what speakers would go well with it?

i' looking at buying a home theatre system, still surfing the net for ideas.
i saw this av receiver and it looks real good and its in my price range,
now i'm looking for speakers that will go good with it.
i know Polk and Jbl are good brands.
any suggestions of good surround sound?

Answer
A lot depends on how large your room is how; many seating positions you have; how close people sit to the speakers; whether wall mounting is an option or not how lively the room is how loud you like to listen and personal preferences.....but just generally speaking take a look at Aperion speakers PSB; Energy; Boston Acoustics and klipsch in addition to JBL and Polk.....if you want to go higher end take a look at Revel especially the Concerta line also Bowers and Wilkins....

I want a set of good quality computer speakers for under $500 that can easily double as a tv surround sound system like something i could hook up to both at the same time and just switch between one or the other. I have a small apartment so buying both computer speakers and a surround sound system doesnt make sence.

Answer
try Logitech G51 Surround Sound 5.1 Speaker System http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UEH5HC?ie=UTF8&tag=digitsy-marina-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000UEH5HC

How do i know if i am being too loud in my apartment? I just hooked up my TV and stereo system.?

Eric Thomp

It is a 2 floor garden apartment complex. It is pretty spacious fairly modern. I just hooked up my tv, game system and sound system.
I have never lived in an apartment before. I am on the 1st floor, so i dont know how sound would travel upstairs. The sound system hooked up is a 200 watt system wirh small subwoofers on each speaker.
I am asking this cause I am not a confrontational person, I am just really shy and would be afraid to get a complaint.

Answer
Go outside and close your door. If you can hear your stuff from out there, it's too loud. As far as I'm concerned, someone else's right to make noise ends at my ears. You can also consult with your neighbours, explaining that you have no experience with this kind of thing and want to know if you're being too loud. Keep in mind that it's your sub woofers that will transmit sound the most. While someone might not be able to hear the rest of the sound, the bass can vibrate across a lot more distance.

Where can I find an "idiots guide" to outdoor speaker installation?

speaker system installation image

Katherine

I don't even know where to start. I need to know what I need to do a full installation of an outdoor speaker stereo system. Questions I have range from: What kind of receiver do I need? How do the outdoor speakers hook up to a receiver that's inside? Do I need an outdoor volume controller? If so, how do I hook that up as well?

I really need "start from scratch" instruction guide. Please help.

Answer
Not sure where to find an Idiots Guide but can tell you what I did with outdoor speakers.
First, buy speakers that are suited for outdoor use. I mounted them under the overhang of the roof around the patio.
Lot's of choices on speakers, some are designed to look like large stones that you can place in a garden, etc.
I ran speaker wire to the inside where the audio equipment is located.
Have a Yamaha receiver that is hooked to the external speakers as well as the inside speakers, TV, VCR, etc.
The receiver has a speaker switch. You can select the speakers you want to use. It is like an A/B switch.
You can also buy wireless speakers. They will be more expensive and I am not sure how well they work.
You might go to Radio Shack and see what they carry in speakers. Have them draw out the hookups for you. I am not touting Radio Shack, any number of good stores handle audio equipment.
I would not want to invest a tremendous amount of money in exterior speakers. To many things can happen to them and you will not be able to tell the difference in sound quality outdoors, anyway.
Good luck

How much should it cost to get a new car stereo and speaker system installed?

roseeee212

I got an estimate of about $615 and have no idea whether or not that's reasonable. The stereo head set itself is about $130 and the speakers are $80 each, plus tax and whatever installation costs. Is that a reasonable price?

Answer
This is how i figure it

head unit: $130 + mounting kit $20 + wiring harness $10 + installation $50 = $210 at most to install the head unit

speakers: $80 x 4 = 320 + installation ($40 maybe)

360 + 210 = $570 plus tax

thats an expensive install for only getting speakers and a new head unit

Is it Ok to join the output of guitar effect to normal speaker system?

Nyein Z

I bought an electric guitar and guitar effect.
I already have an old guitar amp which is not good now.
I am thinking to join the output of guitar effect to normal speaker system for live show or to computer for recording instead of guitar amp.
I am just worried if it will harm my speaker system or computer.

Answer
Nyein Z,

It won't harm either the speaker system or the computer as long as the output is not from a guitar amp. The speaker out from an amp can blow up lots of stuff. Don't do that.

Plugging into a 'speaker system' like a stereo from the effects box should be fine, and same into the computer. Turn everything DOWN before you start. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Then the only challenge is making it sound good. Try stuff and I bet you'll find a good sound.

Good Luck,
John

You should be able to open the box up and snip the wire that goes from the power box in the woofer box to the actual woofer. DO NOT cut any of the wires going to or from the power box that aren't connected to the woofer.

Question on speakers and subwoofer?

I'm looking for a good quality speaker and subwoofer set. In the price range of $50-$175 doesn't have to be top of the line stuff but i do want it to be loud and clear. Any ideas or any ideas on good sub-woofers at least?
Apologies, I'm looking for something that i can hook my ipod and laptop to. If it can't do both then just my ipod.

Answer
Hello,

You didn't say what your application is.....home stereo, PC, bedroom, etc.

You probably won't find a very good non-amplified subwoofer/speaker system for a home theatre for under $200, but there are a number of amplified designs marketed as computer speakers which could probably do a fine job, provided your room isn't too large.

These models have received high reviews on the web and probably represent some of the best of what is in your price range:

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX
Logitech Z623 THX
Logitech X-540 5.1
Harman Kardon SoundSticks III

The Klipsch probably play the cleanest and loudest, and the HK's would probably work best for more up close listening next to your PC. You can read reviews for these on Amazon.com

Hope that helps.

Speakers for college dorm room a good idea?

best speaker system for college dorm image

gorilla

I like to listen to quality music, and usually the best way to do that is through good speakers with a sub woofer. My laptop speakers are ok, but they're not as good as getting a separate speaker system. However, I know that when I am in my dorm room, I will not be able to play music very loud due to roommate, neighbors, etc. So I am wondering if it would be worth it/ a good idea to get speakers. I found nice ones for $40 that are pretty compact as well.

Answer
Not only your roommate, but your neighbors are going to be very irritated with you if you use them. I agree with the other poster; if you want some harmony with your neighbors and roommates, then get some headphones. They will definitely appreciate it. The walls in dorms seem to be paper thin, and, when you're studying or sleeping, noise like that is very annoying. Once you get a house or apartment, that would be a totally different story (depending on the apartment, I guess), but I think it will really be worth it to be kind to people in your dorm. Plus, the RA can write you up if it's too loud.

I made lifelong friends in my dorm, and I hope you do, too! Good luck in college this fall!

How do I hook up my stereo to a TV with no audio output?

Jon A

I just bought an Insignia 5.1 DVD Home Theater System for my college dorm room. However, the TV I have in my room does not have audio output and I'm pretty sure my stereo system can not function as a TV Tuner. Is there any way hook up my stereo to my TV so I can play the TV audio through the surround sound speakers?

Answer
You would need a cable tuner box. Then your cable would go into the box, then cable to your TV and the audio could be outputted from the tuner box to your receiver. You might be able to get one cheap and pay a monthly rental from your cable company. The other option would be some sort of third party tuner. Regardless of where you get the box you would need a tuner of some sort to convert the cable signal.

Should I get an Ipod Touch or the New Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0?

Bob

The galaxy player comes out on October 14 2011

Answer
If you want the latest technology, you should get the Samsung Galaxy Player.

The Samsung Galaxy Player is based on the popular Samsung Galaxy S cell phone minus the 3/4g transceiver just like the iPod Touch is (mostly) based on the iPhone minus the 3/4g transceiver.

I own and love my iPod Touch 4th Gen. However, Apple's recent announcement that the new iPod Touch will simply be cheaper ($199.99 from Amazon), will get IOS 5 to support text messaging and iCloud services, and will come in (wait for it) "white" was a little disappointing. I think that Apple is holding back the iPod Touch development because, if this WiFi-only device were to do everything an iPhone does (minus the 3/4g transceiver), people in WiFi-dense areas may choose not to buy an iPhone + phone data contract. Admittedly, that is a conspiracy theory, but the fact remains that the new iPod Touch did NOT get hardware upgrades to bring it closer to the iPhone 4's capabilities.

The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 (priced at $229.99 to compete with the iPod Touch's original price) and 5.0 (priced at $269.99) each have 8GB of internal memory like the stock iPod Touch. Both have front and back cameras (the 5.0 also has an LED flash for the camera). The iPod Touch's screen has higher resolution, but is smaller than the 4" and 5" Galaxy Players, so that is a tradeoff.

Most importantly, both Galaxy Players bring several features to the table that iPod Touch does not (and may never have):

1. GPS (Can be used with pre-cached offline maps)

2. FM Radio (Wi-Fi isn't everywhere, so the radio option is nice. Good enough for the iPod Nano, apparently, but not the iPod Touch.)

3. Expandable Memory (up to 32GB microSD/microSDHC cards are supported for a potential total of 8GB(stock)+32GB(card)=40GB max. You don't have to buy a completely new device to get more memory. Imagine that... Note that you want to buy a memory card with the highest speed class you can afford for snappy access to your stored media)

4. Three Capacitive Touch Navigation Buttons ( Maybe I just want to go "back", not "home", so 3 buttons are nice. The new iPod Touch was rumored to be getting a capacitive touch home button, but that didn't happen. )

5. Vibration Mode (Can be used for silent alarms, game, or button navigation feedback)

6. Cell Phone-like Ear Speaker (This sweet feature, along with the built-in mic, lets you use your Galaxy Player as a true WiFi-only VOIP phone solution.)

7. Bluetooth 3.0 (Supports wireless data transfer)

8. Replaceable Battery (One day, my iPod Touch's sealed battery will die. At that point, I will either have to buy a new device or pay Apple $70+shipping to replace it for me. If you like to keep electronics until they break or plan on handing down your old electronics to one of your kids, then the iPod's built-in death date is not for you. Also, you could carry an extra battery, although a USB-based power pack is a more generic solution for any USB-charged device you may have)

Some software perks:

1. Android 2.3.5 (Gingerbread) (This is the latest Android operating system used by Samsung's Galaxy S cell phone, so it supports everything you expect from a modern smart phone. This would not have been true for Samsung's previous media player offerings, so the Galaxy Players cannot in fairness be compared to Samsung's pre-Android PMP offerings.)

2. Adobe Flash 10.1 support (HTML 5, favored by Apple is great, but is by no means universal yet. A staggering number of sites continue to exclusively use Adobe Flash for streaming embedded audio/video and for web-based gaming. Apple's mobile devices are unusable for those sites.)

3. Supported File Formats (Bottom line, the SGP will natively play just about any audio/video format you throw at it. The iPod Touch is more picky, so you may have to convert file formats if you stray into exotic/open source audio/video codecs. If you just use mp3 or wav audio and mp4 video files, then this won't be important to you.)

4. AllShare (Galaxy Players can transmit video+audio to AllShare-enabled Samsung TVs. A niche thing, but pretty cool.)

SUMMARY:

Bottom line, Apple blinked with the new iPod Touch. The Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 and 5.0 outmatch the iPod Touch 4th Gen's hardware-based features in every respect except for the screen resolution. The iPod Touch 4th Gen's 3.5in diag 960Ã640 "Retina" LCD resolution is better than Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0's 4in diag 800x480 "Super-TFT" LCD and 5.0's 5in diag 800x480 TFT LCD displays. However, that win doesn't make up for the iPod Touch's now inferior specs when compared with those of the the Samsung Galaxy Players. The future iPod Touch may catch up next year, but, for non-time travelers, the Galaxy Players will be here in about a week.

I have a 32'' Vizio tv with a ps3 as a player. Using hdmi cables but speakers are not that good. Where can I find a 5.1 Surround Sound System for at least under $150 but I would pay $200 at most. I would even buy one used if I have to.

Answer
Frankly, for that amount of money, you are going to get, well, cheap crap.

Now if you could get up to about $400, you could get a Pioneer 5.1 521-K receiver for $165 from Buy.c*m, and for $200 you could get a Polk 6750 5.1 speaker set from Newegg. Under $400 and you have good electronics and good sound. With connectivity to plug in several HDMI devices.

Now, one could look on local classified sites for used speakers, but the savings for a full 5.1 set won't be huge. Good speakers in that price zone would be Infinity and Polk.

Im looking for a home theater system (HTIB) that's under 500$.
Does anyone know of any good ones? I'm not looking for anything
big and expensive just something that sounds loud and good.
I don't need anything like a real cinema/theater experience.
I'm gonna put it in medium sized house room. I have the
Logitech X-540 Speakers and i think they are good
but now i wanna upgrade into a HTIB system.
Anyone know of any good ones?

Answer
HTIB are not reliable nor are they upgradeable. Just get this http://www.amazon.com/Onkyo-HT-S3400-Channel-Theater-Receiver/dp/B004O0TRDI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1310180830&sr=8-1 and add a blu ray player and you are still under 500

What is the best home theater system at a low price?

Matt

I would like some recommendations for good audio speaker systems at a low price. I am on a budget, and would like to find a great sounding system with a subwoofer for $350-$550. I'm sure they're out there! Please help!

Thank you

Answer
Well, you're not clear on what exactly you need.

A good HT audio system includes a home theater audio receiver, a set of speakers, in budget systems, we're talking 5.1 systems, and maybe some of the source devices, such as a disc player, be it an upconverting DVD, or a BluRay.

The first thing is that the all in one systems that include the disc player in with the control unit are just garbage. They tend to have bad speakers, and ones which have proprietary connections, so you cannot use them without that system's control unit. Then, there's the fact that having the disc player be built in with the control unit of the system means that you cannot later upgrade it, and that if it breaks, your whole system is out of action.

No, if you want good sound, and good connectivity, plus the ability to upgrade one part of the system without replacing 100% of it, then you want a separate audio receiver, and a proper home theater speaker set made by a company that specialises in speakers.

A good pick on Amaz*n would be a Yamaha 371BL receiver, going for $190 (list price $250), then add a Polk 705 5.1 speaker system for $250 (list price of $600). Add in some 16 gauge speaker wire (100 feet for about $12), and some connecting cables (digital optical cable-connects TV audio out to the receiver, so that you can listen to the TV's sound through the HT system-$5; HDMI cables to connect the disc player to the receiver, then a second one going from the receiver to the TV, $3 each; and a subwoofer cable, about $8), and you'll be set for good sound for years to come.

Call that just under $500, all included.

Why is My Speaker System Playings Music when it is turned off and isn't connected to a radio?

I have a Durabrand HT-3917, it is turned off with no form of music player or cable/satellite attached to it and it is currently playing classical music at a barely noticeable volume. When I turn on the speaker system the volume is louder and doesn't play classical music. Where is it coming from?

Answer
the speakers could be picking up a very weak signal from the air. This sometimes happens, but it's no big deal if you can barely notice it.

What are the components of a speaker system?

tom267

I know you need the speakers, but what else do i need to create a wireless speaker system for a patio that gets music from an iPod or the radio. (Ex: Receiver, Remote, Amplifier, etc.)

Answer
Aside from an enclosure, the speaker(s) and a cross over you will need some form of amplification to get the signal from the receiver. Once you have sorted out the wireless component (ie. the sending and receiving) try to find either a powered speaker or source a small audio amplification kit (not too hard to build) from E-bay.
Keep in mind, you will need to provide some form of power to this unit.

Good luck

Speakers work off and on even with headphones plugged in! Drivers updated and everything looks fine?

Lenovo Y410 with Windows Vista. After performing a system restore, I cannot get audio all the time. Even with headphones plugged in, no sound will play frequently. My volume is turned all the way up and my drivers are updated. Please help!

Answer
If you canât find the right Windows drivers manually I would recommend just getting a software program that can do it for you. There is a program I use which will find drivers for just about all hardware devices. The best part is it takes a snapshot of your system specifications and matches the right driver to go with it. Perform a free driver scan at:
http://www.drivers-updates.net/drivers/windows-vista-drivers.html
Also, you can get the driver from the official site:

How do I keep my computer speakers working when I have a USB internet phone plugged in?

dpestretto

I am using Yahoo Messenger and a Linksys Dual-Mode Cordless phone specifically configured for yahoo. My operating system is Vista. I would like to have my phone plugged in and be able to listen to the radio and music from the internet at the same time and on the same computer.

Thanks in advance

Answer
It's a feature they put in to prevent ear piercing audio feedback from screeching through the speakers. It must be using Windows to handle the sound because by itself windows can only handle one stream of sound output. I'm sure they could design a phone that wouldn't use Windows to handle the sound but it would make the phone more expensive to make.

What are the top brands of the home theater systems on the market?

I am not talking about home theater - in -a box (pre-boxed) systems like sony or panasonic that are usually under $500.

I am talking about the ones you usually put all the components together yourself. I have zero knowledge as to who makes the best home theaters systems.

It would great if you list down several brands and top websites that sell them.

Answer
You should probably check out Amazon (link below) for most of these, as they offer free shipping on most AV receivers and can generally take $100 or more off the price of a receiver. I actually spoke with an AV pro at Circuit City the other day, and here were his feelings on receivers:

Top of the line: Denon (and some Sony's). They just make the highest quality receivers that are capable of doing pretty much anything you want. However, he did forewarn me (and I believe it) that setting up a Denon system is not for the faint of heart of the inexperienced. He said he's seen people struggle with it for days before calling in an expert.

Pretty good: Yamaha and Onkyo (and Harmon Kardon). Both make similar style receivers that are fairly (moderately) intuitive to set up. I know Onkyo provides a microphone that is supposed to optimize the sound quality and the point where you put the mike. I don't think Yamaha's have that on their mid-range receivers.

After that: Sherwood and other makers. Just not the kind of product you want to buy if you're looking for quality. These are more of the "just-scraping-by" style recievers. I'd spend the little extra to make sure you got a quality product that will last you more than a year or two.

For someone who's just looking to get into the market (which it sounds like you are), you may want to look at the Onkyo TX-SR605 style reciever. It has up-converstion, meaning that you can run one single HDMI cable to your HDTV, and all other video signals will be formatted to work. It has 2 HDMI inputs, 3 component video inputs, and 4 digital audio inputs, which should be plenty to last a while. The set up is fairly obvious on the entire receiver and provides plenty of power to the speakers. Most importantly, you can find it (right now) for $400-$500 USD at several retail outlets, including Amazon. A great receiver if you're just getting into them.

Also, speakers are a different subject. You don't want the brands I listed above, you want to look into Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Bose and JBL, to name a few. The sound quality and speaker make up will be much better and last longer. You want a cone (the part that makes the sound) that is not paper, but ceramic, plastic and/or part titanium.

Hope this helps! Check out the link below Amazon (CNET) for more comprehensive reviews of everything you're looking for.

What is the best wireless surround sound system?

Jake

I am looking for a surround sound system that does not have a lot of wires, and that I can have speakers that are wireless. My budget is is around $500, and I really want the best for my money.

Thanks!

Answer
At that price you will have to stay in the theater in a box surround sound which is a 5.1 system with a dvd player and subwoofer.
Go to http://www.bestbuy.com or cnet for reviews.
I have a sony which cost around $350 2 years ago with wireless rear speakers and I'm happy with it.
Any brand like Sony, Panasonic or Samsung should be ok. Make sure that it has Hdmi ports and a digital audio in.

What audio features could I set up on this camera DVR system?

Ryan

DVR: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16881377017

I already have it set up and all but what audio features could I set up? For example could I set up mics on all the cameras or could I hook the dvr up to a speaker system and then speak from a mic on a remote computer that is viewing the cameras online so that anyone could hear me if they're by the dvr and speakers?

Answer
If the cameras don't have microphones, they can't provide any audio;
you would need separate mics.
If any of the mics need to be outdoors, you will have a lot of trouble
keeping them from being ruined by sun, rain, dust,
and other vicissitudes of the environment.

Most of the DVRs in these prepackaged systems have few audio functions or options,
if they have any audio capabilities at all.
It is unlikely that there is any possibility of the setup having a talkback feature,
which requires audio amplifiers and speakers in addition to whatever you have now.

You will probably have to assemble a completely separate audio setup
and find a way to integrate it with the camera system.
It can be done via konfuzer, though, and someone else
may have some hints for you as to how to do it.

Can I still use wireless mic system with new mics?

E2K

Hello,
at my job we use a portable wireless mic system for presentations and such. We run it through a fender passport speaker system. It's about 3 years old now and originally came with 2 wireless mics. Both of mics are now kaput, but the receiver unit is still good. Is it possible to replace the wireless microphones with new ones? How will I know if they are compatible with the receiver? I can provide the model number and specifics and all that if need be. Help!

Answer
get them from the same manufacturer as the original

i have some bad news though, many of the wireless systems were illegal and the FCC has come down on manufacturers to stop non-licensed sales. a number of the channels were in the old UHF television band that has been reclaimed for other use because of the DTV transition.

if you are caught in this mess, it might be better to just start over making sure you have legal new equipment.

What is a good speaker system for a HDTV plasma?

I bought my husband a 42"plasma flat screen for Christmas. We are thinking about adding a wireless speaker system to enhance the sound. It is in an average size living room - so we don't want to be "blasted" by sound - just good sound for movies etc. We also don't want to spend more than $250. Any recommendations?

Answer
Nothing sounds better then a Bose. You are not likely to get "great" sound for $250. I could be wrong through. However Bose does offer a small home theater system that will give you great sound with out be "blasted" by it. It is $499 however Bose offers a interest free payment plan. They take out a monthly charge to your credit card automatically with out charging you interest for 12 mos making it more affordable! I provided a link below if you want to check it out. I have also included a link to reviews of the best home theaters it also talks about less expensive models this may also help you out.

What is a good speaker system for $150 or less?

Mr.Largo

I just got birthday money for a speaker system and I'm looking for the best sound for my money. I've been looking at the Logitech z-2300, but they seem kind of outdated? These will be used on my computer. I won't listen to them on too high of volume, but I'd like them to be able to still sound clear even when turned all the way up.
Thanks.

Answer
You really do get what you pay for with speakers. Your best bet is to go on Bestbuy.com, tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, and sears.com and check out reviews of speakers. Every brand has their flops and golden speakers. Why not listen to someone who has already owned them?

Do I have 200 dollars from Yule to spend, and I decided that what I want/need more than anything is a good pair of headphones, an an iPod dock or speaker system that I can bring to college next year. I would prefer a dock that charges and has remote control. I can't spend more than 200 dollars.

Answer

^^^ The cheapest decent docking station with speakers I could find. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a remote, is that a deal breaker for you?

However, in the headphone department, I recomend the K 142 HD headphones from AKG.

http://www.amazon.com/AKG-K142HD-Definition-Semi-Open-Headphones/dp/B0028N78HA

18-24k frequency response which can suit all types of music, semi-open design - great acoustics, deep/clean sound, and virtually no distortion whatsoever.

At $100, these headphones are a fantastic deal; if you're not a fan of the semi-open design, check out headphones of similar prices from Audio Technica, (other AKG's), Sennheiser, Grado, etc.

(I left you about 40 bucks of wiggle room incase you didn't like one of the items)

Best of Luck
