What is a good wireless speaker system that can cover a whole floor for under $500?

Q. I am going to set up my grandmother's home audio system. I need it to have a standard 3.5 mm headphone input jack so that I can connect it to airport express. Thanks in advance, Will!
I don't mean surround sound, I mean a system that I can place a speaker in any part of the house.

Answer
I don't know of a completely wireless 5.1 system, but Panasonic and Sony both make wireless rear speaker systems. The front three speakers and the sub are wired, but the rears are wireless. The Panasonic is RF, while the Sony uses IR. I don't think either has a 3.5mm input, but you can buy a 3.5 to RCA adapter for $3 at any electronics store. I don't know the price of the systems though. I believe the model numbers are Panasonic SCHT940 and Sony DAVFX1. I could be wrong. Too many models to keep track of. Hope this helps.

Home Speaker System?

jared_lee_

Does anybody know how much it costs to put in a whole-house in-ceiling or in-wall speaker system. The house we are building has 4 bedrooms which I would like speakers in all. Also I would like them in the basement, kitchen, living, 2 bathrooms, and 4 outside speakers.

Answer
Well first off it depends on how many speaker per room. Let's estimate 2 in each bedroom, 4 outside, 1 per bathroom, living room, kitchen 4 each, and 1 home theater system.
A good quality in home speaker in ceiling about 350 per pair, a good in wall being about the same.
2 Receivers and 1 multiroom switch approximately $2500. A whole house system controller (Fancy Remote that controls every room with a button) 1000 for the system and 1000 per master remote and 500 for a secondary remote.
Now with all that Speaker Wire run to every room in wall grade to the receivers. 3000. (Little extra for guesstimate)
and volume knobs per room 10 at 50 each 500.
And and Installer who can do it all for you 2500 to 4500.

About 25,000 to 40,000 depending on the equipment.

What are the best speakers for my iPod nano 2nd generation?

BobS

I want good speakers, nothing too fancy, for my ipod nano that aren't too expensive. Plz help

Answer
Speaker that are made specifically for iPods are pretty expensive a lot of the time and are not always that great. If you purchase an inexpensive "RCA to headphone jack" cable you can hook your iPod up to any speakers/stereo systems with the RCA connections. You can also hook your iPod up to any computer speakers. Just go to your computer and unplug the cable with the green end and plug that into the iPod's headphone jack. Here's a picture of the RCA to headphone jack cable (probably cost less than $10):

MEMOREX SPEAKER SYSTEM FOR IPOD REMOTE CONTROL NOT WORKING PROPERLY?

Claudia Ca

I JUST GOT A MEMOREX SPEAKER SYSTEM FOR IPOD. I'M USING IT WITH MY IPOD NANO. ON THE REMOTE CONTROL, THE POWER, VOLUME, AND MUTE BUTTONS SEEM TO WORK FINE, BUT THE PREVIOUS, NEXT, AND PLAY/PAUSE BUTTONS DO NOT RESPOND WHEN USED. IT JUST DOESN'T DO ANYTHING. I HAVE TO DO IT MANUALLY ON THE IPOD. MY FRIEND ALSO BOUGHT ONE AND HERS IS WORKING FINE. WHAT COULD IT BE?

Answer
It's either the system, or the remote. Get with the friend, use your remote on his unit. If it works your remote is good. Use his remote on your system. If it doesn't work, your system is bad, assuming his remote works fine on his system.

If all the units are the same, this usually tells the story. You can also try your speakers on his unit. Make notes on what you do. Hope this helps, Magyver

I have a 15"x10" room, is a 250 watt 2.1 system not going to be loud enough?

Alawisious

I am not too picky, but I want it to sound ok. Philips has a good price on a 2.1 "virtual surround sound" system ... hts6500... is this not big enough for my living room?

Answer
A 15' x 10' room isn't too demanding. Bottom line is this system might be loud enough ... particulalry if you have efficient speakers, a powered subwoofer and don't expect wall shaking lodness. But consider a few things before deciding.

To put loudness (measured in decibels, or db) in perspective, very loud music would measure 100 - 110 db, while soft music would be in the order of 50-60 db. However, decibels are logarithmic, not linear, so to generate a sound 3db louder with a specific speaker the amplifier will actually need to deliver TWICE as much power. But 3 db is just sufficient for the human ear to note the volume increase.

But power (watts) and loudness (decibels) do not necessarily correlate. To a very large extent it depends on the speakers you choose. Efficient speakers ... those that generate more volume at a defined distance from a certain input power ... will be louder than lower efficiency speakers.

Look for the efficiency rating as something like: "90 db at 1 m for 1 watt input" (see first link). A higher number is better (from a loudness perspective).

This non-linear effect also explains why anything less than double the amplifier power is essentially irrelevent when choosing between two models. Two models, one 60 watt/channel and the other 90 watt/channel will only be about 2 db different at maximum loudness.

The link below explains it, but in essence it means that "loud enough" will largely depend on your taste and the speakers you use. If you want wall shaking bass and 110 db midrange / treble (??) you may be disappointed (but not necessarily, since remember that THX specs only require 100 watts (but "real" watts).

Several other considerations:

What type of 'watts" are your 250 watts? If they are 125 "rms" watts/channel (with both speakers driven into 8 ohms) they are certainly enough. But if, as is more likely given the type of system you describe, they are "music power" or "dynamic" watts they might be barely adequate (since this might translate to as little as 25-30 watts/channel rms.

You say the system is 2.1 ... but does the .1 (LFE) feed a powered or passive subwoofer? If passive, power may not be enough because subwoofers require a lot of power.

What type of surfaces are in the room? If fairly "bright" it will seem louder, while an absorbtive room (lots of soft surfaces) will seem softer for the same settings of the 2.1 system. But, a reflective room is likely to be unpleasant to listen in!

What level of distortion are you comfortable with? Amplifiers typically reach quite high distortion levels as they approach their maximum output (and you would be wise to not plan to exceed about 50-70% of full power on a normal basis).

Few speakers are really built to handle very high power levels. In reality, most speakers are rated at or below 100 watts ... so a larger amplifier is really unnecessary.

As you can see the topic is actually fairly complex.

Bottom line: the system you described is not that high a performer, and unless you have efficient speakers and a powered subwoofer it will not deliver wall shaking loudness (at least not without high distortion levels). That said, a good 50-75 rms watt/channel amp would do fine.

Hope this helps.

Multi Room Speaker System?

kim

Ok, so I want to run a 5.1 in my living room and connect 2 speakers in my kitchen and 2 speakers in my dining room. At no time do I want to run all 9 speakers at once. At times I will want to run just the 5.1. Then for parties I would like to run the 2 in the kitchen, 2 in the dining room, and 2 of the 5 in the living room playing the same thing the same time. I would just buy two receivers but I dont want to have to switch the subwoofer between the two when I am having a party or watching a movie. What receiver do I need to buy to make this happen and if I can't do it with just one receiver, would adding a speaker selector solve my problem? I would like to keep this as cheep as possible but am willing to pay to make it work. BTW ... I am running Energy speakers ... 4 rc-30s, 1 rc-lcr, 2 rc-10s, 2 rc-rs, and a S12.3 subwoofer

Answer
Many systems have switchable speaker outputs, usually only for the main left and right outputs.
If you are planning on using the same two speakers in the living room that are connected to the 5.1 output you will have to use a switching system. you cant have wires running carrying a live signal back into the receiver.
With multiple speakers connected to a single source your main concern will be your OHM rating. too many speakers connected in series can blow out an amplifier ( depending on the ohm ratings of the speakers you are using )

How do you connect an Ipod to a speaker system?

jas2world

Is there some sort of cable you can buy that will let your Ipod play from any speaker system that has a headphone jack or other common jack?

Answer
If you have a component-style speaker system then you just need to go to an electronics store and buy a 3.5mm headphone to RCA chord - it had two "male" ends (one white, one red). You just plug the two ends into any place (phono or cd for example), set the stereo to it, and play the ipod.

If you have a shelf system (all-in-one set) then you need to look for inputs. These will usually be on the back of the stereo somewhere. They will most likely be RCA inputs, but occasionally they have headphone inputs. Get the right kind of chord and plug it in. To listen to the ipod, set your stereo to Aux input (short for auxiliary). If your shelf system does not have an Aux setting, then chances are you cannot play your ipod on it.

If you have a computer speaker system, then there should be a headphone chord included which you plug into your ipod and play from there. If you play and no sound is coming out of the speakers then try turning the volume on the ipod up.

iPod speaker/docking systems?

Amber

Any suggestions? I have an iPod touch 3rd generation not that it matters considering you get different attachments/a universal docking station... anyways :P I need something that is:

-loud!
-CLEAR/crisp-a system that does not lose clarity with the max volume
-has a good range of pitch i.e. tweeters, mid rangers & decent bass (sub woofers etc.)

I know that's a lot to ask for for under around $200 and I know I'm not going to get a state of the art piece with that but I believe it's possible to get those features with the quality for that price range-thanks!! :)

Answer
You can find quality iPod speakers/docking systems online. Might want to check if iHome, Altec Lansing or Cyber Acoustics fits your preference.

What are the best in-ceiling home speakers for the money?

Issaquena

I am building a house and the contractor has suggested Sonance Symphony speakers for the in-ceiling home audio system. Sonance apparently only deals through installers and all of their products available from online vendors are not covered by their warranty. I am still considering Sonance as they appear to be very high end speakers (although expensive). I would like to know the best in-ceiling audio speakers and tuner for a budget of $2000-$3000 (not including installation). I will need to cover 3 rooms and a back porch.

Answer
Get the contractor to pre-wire for 7.1 and monitor and mark the locations (so you can find them when it is finished), or better yet, have them wire and install speaker connection plates for a finished look > for regular floor standing speakers (they will always sound better , and you can up-grade them easier, and take them with you when you move). And if you sell the house it is a cleaner look to simply have connector boxes in the walls > at outlet height! (it looks finished).
All in-wall speakers have trade-offs as they are dependent on the space in the wall that is the ENCLOSURE (your contractor is much less scientific at getting GREAT sounding enclosures than say Yamaha or JBL!, rattles and buzzs can be impossible to fix, and your walls have a hole in them that can not be easily removed if the location either changes or is not optimal in the first place. And a poorly placed nail > to hang a picture can disable or even short out electronics, and be difficult to repair!
After installers (an electrician can do the pre-wire) are gone, get Yamaha, Klipsch, JBL, Sonnance (yes they are expensive, are they worth it?), or any reputable brand.
Go to some installers showrooms and demo them, and make a choice there, but install after they are done.
Get an Receiver that is capable of multi-zone speaker support and place it where it can receive the Remote Controls IR Signal from any area you will most likely use it. You can Distribute the sound to other rooms from that second zone output.
In each room it is wise to have an in-wall volume control for that area, to get the right level for that area (balancing the whole house for listening/partying), for when the phone rings and the remote either does not reach or is in the other room!.
It is also important to be able to turn down/off the porch speakers so you do not wake the neighbors during a late night Blast!
If you must have in-ceiling, or in-wall type speakers, request they use factory baffle enclosures (same as manufacturer of speakers for best sound, as it makes the speaker enclosure what the manufacturer recommends for proper acoustics and makes them a matched size, [and keeps dust and dirt out of inside of the coil area> especially important for ceilings]).
I used to work for an installation company, and as a musician, they usually have NO CLUE at what makes best placement or a great sounding room.
So not building them in, is always the best choice as I can up-grade if I'm not happy with my first choice or specifications change (which they will), & I can fine-tune their placement, 'cause furniture size and placement may change, or that screen may get a lot bigger real soon (projector) and those built-in speakers are then in the viewing area!
Newegg.com has purchasers feedback on many of the current brands, models, and options available, so check out what real buyers are saying about the different things you may consider before buying!
It has saved me from making a bad purchase or two, and many times you find that while a product may be good, if their support sucks you would buy another brand!
Also in-ceiling speakers are not optimal for Home Theatre set-ups, though they work well in other areas, like kitchens, baths, etc.
And at last, Home Theatre speakers need to be pointed at the listening area at ear level,(ie: directional, and line of sight) to get the most accurate imaging (in-wall >Mediocre to OK, but in-ceiling > NO!!!!!)
You do not want to look at the ceiling every time a loud passage that originates at the screen happens!
Check out the AUDIOHOLICS.com web-site for many tips on placement, best product ratings, and tips to help you spend money on the best products that will enhance the experience, NOT just drain your wallet > like Monster Cables will.
Happy Viewing & Listening!!!

Best 7.1 speaker system with Sony STR-DH810 receiver?

Lanny L

Answer
I would go with Klipsch, Polk Audio, or even Sony speakers. They don't a have 7.1 speaker system on the market that I know of. They do have a handful of nice 5.1 systems and you could just go and buy to extra speakers. Personally I'd stay with 5.1 surround sound because there isn't much content in 7.1 channel surround sound. I'd go with a 5.1 for now and wait till 7.1 gets a lot more content, but that's just me. If your decide to go with 5.1 and are wiring your room for surround sound wire it for 7.1 as well for the future so when you do switch to 7.1 the wires well be up and you can just connect two more speaker calibrate the receiver and be done with it.

what is the best alarm clock + speaker system + radio dock for IPHONE?

R66

I am considering these:

- iHome Rotating Alarm Clock for iPhone and iPod 80u$
- Philips DC315/37 Speaker System for iPod/iPhone with LED Clock Radio (Black) 88u$
- CVT i3101

Any thoughts on the rest?

I am looking for an alarm clock with great speakers. And the following functions if possible.
1) When you have it in the base listening to music, if you receive a phone call I would like the music to stop
2) Listening to Pandora radio also through the speakers.
3) Waking up with the music in a crescendo voluime.
4) No need to put the iphone in airplane mode (due to interference with the speakers).

Let me know what you think.

Answer
I have the iHome, and I couldn't be happier with it. it sounds so good and loud for its size. the volume goes up to # 40, but I can hear it fine at # 25 while blow drying in bathroom. I use it for my ipod actually, but my daughter puts her iphone in it when shes visiting. I got it 2 1/2 yrs ago. I am sure the design has changed but hopefully not the quality. it also had the date displayed which I like. and it has a cute itty bitty remote control. Its one thing I have that I've never had a problem with.
go with ihome you wont be disapointed. You can also hook up an external device to it, I hooked up a xm radio to it.

Does the memorex speaker system work with the iPhone 3g?

I just bought a memorex speaker system for an iPod but I have an iPhone and when I put it on it says it won't be able to charge it and when I play music it it doesn't come out of the speakers.

Answer
probably not. with your iphone, i've found only certain speakers will work. just because they have the same 32 pin connector doesn't mean they'll work.

for 369.99 this is an exceptional deal. i bought this system about a month ago and was blown away by the sound and power of the subwoofer. i do recommend that you buy 16 guage speaker wire instead of the cheap wire they provide you with. you will notice a big difference in sound. i also would recommend a new subwoofer cable. also make sure to run digital/optical wires to get true 5.1 sound. all together yo are going to end up spending around 450 but will not be disappointed

Whats a good home theater system under $500 that can send video and audio through HDMI?

Mike 85

Answer
GOOD is a word some people throw around a lot.

ive heard people describe computer speakers as "good" and i've never heard a pair that come even close to adequate for real music listening. .

"GOOD" speakers cost more than $500 by themselves if you want the whole range of sound

i bought a panasonic system for under that much and its ok for movies and tv but i would never describe it as "GOOD"
it doesnt make music sound good at all.its too boomy with no definition. there is no control beyond a handful of preprogramed surround effects

2010 Jeep Wrangler Sound System?

Ryan M

I want to upgrade the speakers, but really have no background knowledge on anything such as car speakers/subs related .. i've visited websites such as crutchfield and so but i don't really know what to look for... i would love to avoid having to replace my head unit and overall i am looking for a reasonably priced sound system that will play my music more clear and louder.. everything in the car is factory for the 2010 jeep wrangler unlimited. any help/information is appreciated

Answer
Assuming you don't have the premium Infinity sound system, I would look on a wrangler forum for info on how to upgrade to it. Infinity isn't bad at all.

2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited speaker system upgrade suggestions?

Andrew

Hi I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and I was wondering what good speakers could I put in. I don't want anything to to expensive but I'll pay for good quality speakers. I have the 4 speaker system. Should I modify the speakers mount to hold bigger speakers. I am not looking for too much bass but I like bass also the sound quality. When I'm driving down the highway it sounds horrible. Also I want I try to keep the factory headunit. And also would it be good to put a small amp to power the speakers. Thanks

Answer
whenever i get a new car my upgrade process goes :
big 4ch amp --> sound deadener --> headunit --> sub --> front speakers

ill power the front 2 speakers off of 2 channels of the amp and leave the rear speakers un amplified. i'll use the other 2 channels for a sub when i get one.

then ill make sure nothing rattles, you probably get a lot of road noise on the highway? a properly deadened vehicle is pretty close to silent at speed. http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com read for an hour or so. i usually only "cld" or dynamat and skip the mlv and ccf but you may want to look into it because of your noise issue.

ill skip the headunit part cause you don't want one

next ill add a sub. you can't have a decent sounding system without a sub. I'm not talking some monstrous beast of a sub, just a 8-12 inch 300- 500 watt rms subwoofer in a sealed box.

finally i'll add some speakers. i usually need them at this point beacause my stockers have been blown to absolute hell by a ridiculously overpowered amplifier. i usually choose a home audio speaker from parts-express.com with and make sure it's an alright fit for my amp and also make sure it has really low inductance, which effects how "punchy" the bass is. for simplicity's sake, ill just recommend a component set. i'll do up a mock system for you:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_20406_Soundstream_RUB5800.aspx
found this nice 5 channel amp, you can run all your speakers (front and rear) and a sub off this

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_12655_Dynamat_10455.aspx
can be found a lot cheaper on ebay

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_18896_Infinity-Reference-860W.html
good little sub at a good price

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12260_JBL-P660C.html
front speakers, not sure what size speaker your jeep is, i guessed at 6.5

with that amp you can add an amplified set to the rear aswell, go coax for a budget speaker, go component if you will have lots of people in the back and can spare the cash.

How to connect a home hi-fi stereo system to laptop/computer?

MJ

Hello music lovers. I am planning to set up myself my first ever stereo system (2 loudspeakers). In doing so I hope to make an improvement to my pretty good Creative table speakers/sub system (2.1) connected to my laptop. However I have some questions regarding how-to technical stuff, so I though I ask you guys for some advice. As I understand I need to buy 2 loudspeakers, then connect them to some sort of amplifier/receiver (not sure what's the difference) and then connect the amp directly to my laptop (in the future maybe to pc). Are there any flaws in these plans ? Also one thing really bugs me. If my laptop have standart basic/integrated sound card, is it worth installing this hi-fi system at all, because I heard that if laptop "can't produce good quality, nothing is going to help and I first need to get a decent soundcard". OR is the amplifier going to take care of business regardless of soundcard type ?

Please give me your honest opinions, tips, advice. Thank you very much and rock on. NB If it is relevant I am on a budget - planning to spend around 400-500 dollars overall. I guess that's not very hi-fi, but whatever :).

Answer
All you need
Vintage amplifier or receiver from 70s or 80s.....
Pioneer, Kenwood, Technics, Sansui, Onkyo, Zenith, Harmon Kardon, etc
$50 upwards for good quality sound.
A receiver is an amp and a tuner in one unit. Add speakers or headphones, you get a high quality stereo radio with inputs for CD, Tape, Phono etc
If it doesn't have one labeled CD, plug the CD into TAPE or AUX. Those are all line level inputs
.
Do not plug anything into PHONO except turntable leads.
PHONO is a very low level input and can be crushed into bits and messed up real baaaaad by a line level device.
A typical vintage receiver
http://audioklassiks.de/Bilder/Pioneer/PIONEER.SX-727.01.jpg

Vintage hifi speakers ....
B&W, Wharfedale, Eltax, Rogers, Tannoy, Castle Acoustics, etc
$50 upwards for good quality sound
B&W DM5....excellent......so are dozens more.
http://www.hiendoption.com/main/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/B_W_DM5____Comin_4db638f6dc463.jpg

Speaker cable or use 5 amp lighting cable, does the same thing
3.5mm to 2 RCA connecting lead from computer headphone socket to any line level input on the amp.
Line level inputs are TUNER-CD-TAPE-AUX

Total $105 upwards. Beats $300 stuff bought new.
Look in Cash Converters, Cash Generators, eBay, local classifieds etc
Or get a lucky find at a car boot or garage sale and walk home with a complete set for $50

Sound will be much better than $300 computer speakers or music centers even from a cheap laptop with an old sound card.
On the link at the bottom is where I am sitting now in a small hobby room with piles of stuff, astro mirror making kit, piles of books, tape recorders, speakers, photo gear, workbench, coffee prep etc and little space left so the amps are on top of the speakers..
QED A230, Quad 34 pre-amp, Wharfedale Denton speakers on top, B&W DM5 underneath.
Cost in order......
QED....25 (auction)...
.Quad 34...20(Cash Converters)...
Denton...zero (rescued from being thrown into a skip).
DM5 ...10...(Cash Converters, covered in coffee stains, cat scratches. Sanded down, re-varnished)
Total £55 ($80)
You can do it for $80 too where you are. There is more in the USA than in the UK.
Look around, grab stuff when it's going.

Looking for a good 2.1 speaker system?

Lili DeRoc

So I'm looking for a 2.1 speaker system for my computer. I typically listen to a lot of EDM, and dub step music. I've been looking around and so far I'm considering these ones: http://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Acoustics-Subwoofer-Satellite-CA-3602a/dp/B0027VT6V4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=8428RMKBD4LI&coliid=I2EQEEMSBGGTDX

I've read a lot of good reviews about it, but I'm still skeptical. So if anyone could suggest a good 2.1 speaker system, that'd be great!

Answer
Try Altec Lansing's speakers. They're really good and reputed. Visit their website http://www.alteclansing.com

I need a good 2.1 speaker system?

Harry Rich

i would like a really good quality and loud 2.1 speaker system but i only have £70 max

Answer
Logitech Z-2300's run for about 130$ and are probably one of the THE best systems out there.

Highly recommended anywhere you go. If you've got the extra cash and want something amazing, get those.

However, for cheaper, you can go for things like the Logitech Z-4 40 watt, and the Creative Inspire T3100's (I own a pair of the creatives, they're great for about 30-50 bucks)

It all depends on what your preference is.

Look on sites like

http://www.newegg.com/

http://www.amazon.com/

http://reviews.cnet.com/

All these have reviews and you can read up on some speakers.

Pay attention to Subwoofer power, Frequency Response (range), and the Total Power.

Good luck =)

i have a panasonic tv btw.

and also i was wondering what exactly satelite speakers means..?

thank you in advance
or if you have any other suggestions..?

Answer
I would say you could make the Samsung system sound the best since you have a lot of control over speaker placement. It doesn't have as much power as the Panasonic system but quite a bit more than the Pioneer.

The satellite speakers are the speakers you place around the room. Typically, you will have one subwoofer and 5 satellite speakers.

I've not heard any of these, but none of these companies are known for good speakers. Have you looked at the Yamaha line? I'm in the US so I can't speak to pricing, but their products sound pretty darn good in the lower price ranges.

Any good Home Cinema Systems?

spikeyfish

I'm looking for a home cinema system which has really good sound quality and has the "tall boy" style speakers. Any good ones for around £200? UK only please and from reputable companies :). I've been searching all day and not found anything that hasn't been discontinued. I like the look of the Samsung HT-TZ225 or the Samsung HT-THX35R. Both out of stock.

Answer
If you want the best I would suggest the Onkyo HTS9100THX 7.1 channel home theater system at $948.98. If you want a more conservative priced one I would say the Samsung HTAS720ST 5.1-channel home theater system at only $449.98

how much watts can a soundstream tarantula trx2.640 amp throw on mono?

Nick

i have a sound system which has 6 speakers and 2 subs the speakers are four 12'' EV and 2 15''EV only speakers and 2 18'' RCF subs! i have a SoundStream Tarantula TRX 2.640 amp the box says its a 2-channel amp with 640 watts im using the amp as mono so the guy told me im going to have about 2,000 watts on mono is this true im planing on using it with my 6 speakers not the subwoofers will it have enough power for all 6 speakers? please HELP ME!!!

Answer
Here is the link to that amp for specs.

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_19684_Soundstream_TRX2640.aspx

in bridged/mono it will put out 640 rms @ 4 ohms. You couldn't run 6 speakers off that amp in mono unless your run it at 6 ohms which would make the amp put out less power. Why would you want to run speakers in mono? you want to run them in stereo. 3 on one side and 3 on the other in stereo.
Even at 2 ohm stereo you can't run 6 speaker. You have to run 2 of those speakers off your deck or another amp. Run 4 of your speakers off that amp in 2 ohm stereo and it will work. Run 2 in parallel to one channel and 2 in parallel to the other channel. Then you will get 110 rms to each speaker which is plenty.

computer speakers??

okay, so i don't know much about computers, but do um... all computers come with a "hole" to plug in your speakers? because i have recently gotten a dell computer and i forgot to order the speakers, so i'm wondering if i can get speakers seperately for it and it'll still be able to work, or if the computer comes with the "hole" for the speakers. do you know what i mean?

Answer
Order your own speakers. You will be able to choose much better quality, often for a lower price. Any set of speakers can usually plug into the speaker jack.

Most integrated audio supports 7.1 speakers and is backward compatible with most other types. Double check that yours is.

Speaker Configurations
2.0, 2.1, 4.1, 5.1, 7.1

7.1
7 = number of speakers;
1 = Also has subwoofer 0= No subwoofer

Nice home theater system?

Q. What is a nice Home Theater System with a nice subwoofer? I can go any brand! My budget is 1000 dollars or under.

Answer
Don't go for the prepackaged systems, they are cheaply made, are not very reliable, and offer poor quality sound.

Your best bet in your price range is to buy some decent stand alone speakers, two main, two surrounds, and maybe a subwoofer. A good receiver and blu ray player.

If you can place your main speakers reasonably close together (10ft or less) then you can save your money on a center channel speaker and put it toward better main speakers. The only reason a center channel speaker is needed is in most dedicated home theater systems the main speaker are on the outside of the screen and because of the large distances between the main speakers it creates a poor center image for effects and vocals. The majority of people that is not a problem and by allowing the main speakers to reproduce the center image is actually going to give you better much better sound. You also may not need a subwoofer, if your main speakers are large enough and capable of reproducing enough bass on their own then your good to go. So again save your money on a subwoofer and put it toward a good pair of main speakers.

The best bet is getting the best pair of main speakers you can afford and then ether getting another pair for the rears, or a smaller pair for the surround effects from the same manufacture. The one big misconception is that the rear channel speakers do not have to be big as they are only reproducing effects. Well its true they are only reproducing effects but the rear channel information is a full range signal, meaning that it will give you the best results if you have rear speakers capable of reproducing a full range sound. It will give you the best continuity of the main speakers and rear effects and with full range speakers in the rears will give a much larger and more dynamic image.

For receivers I feel you have to choose wisely as there many poorly made receivers on the market today. Even some of the better brands have now cut corners in the quality of their products.

NAD is making what I feel the best receivers right now, as they are one of the few if not the only one using discreet output stages. They are also using higher quality parts, this will give you both better sound quality, and better reliability. Marantz and Denon are the other brands I used to recommend but even they have cut corners in the quality of parts used.

Blu ray player - well its still the Sony Playstation 3, it offers a very good image and sound and you get gaming system as an extra.

I would strongly suggest going to your local independent high end audio video store as they carry the better brands of equipment and speakers and the salesmen at these stores generally have many years experience designing higher quality systems.

Which speaker system do you suggest?

aatman

hello

I'm constructing a new house and i'm looking for audio solutions. i have always trusted bose but the internet belives something different.

which brand do you think is the best for home audio solutions. i was thinking of getting a 5.1 system plugged into an a/v receiver. or a 5.0 system with a different subwoofer.

thanks in advance
is bowers and wilkins any good?
thanks for the response ricky but i was looking for an unconventional brand.

Answer
- Bose speakers are crap.

- Active speakers have built in amplifiers in the speakers (and/or built in amplifier in the subwoofer and the speakers plug into the subwoofer). Examples of active speakers would be computer speakers or sound bars.
- Most active speaker systems have very little power and low end quality and no additional features other than producing audio. = Garbage (I don't recommend computer speakers or sound bar speakers).

- Blu-ray or DVD home theaters in a box is a disc player (amplifier) that comes with and hooks up to compatible passive speakers with speaker wire.
- All HTIB systems have very little power and very low end quality and not much additional features other than producing audio. = Garbage (I don't recommend HTIB systems).

- What I do recommend are receivers (amplifiers) that hook up to compatible passive speakers with speaker wire, computers or blu-ray/dvd player or game consoles hook up to the receiver with a hdmi cable for audio then receiver hooks up to the tv with a hdmi cable for video. You can find good cheap speaker wire and hdmi cables at monoprice or amazon.
- If you notice below, brands that make good receivers do not make good speakers. = I don't recommend a system that bundles a receiver with speakers, but the Onkyo HT-(S3500 or S5500 or S6500 or S7500 .ect) system is not too bad. = So if your on a budget, then I recommend you get a low/high end 7.1/7.2 surround sound receiver and you get mid end or high end stereo speakers (you can get+add more speakers later to have a surround sound system).

Some examples of good 5.1 surround sound audio speakers.
- Low end bookshelf 5.1 speakers = Polk Audio 5.1 Blackstone TL(1600 or 1900 or 2600); Klipsch 5.1 HD Theater (300 or 500 or 600); Energy 5.1 (Take Classic or RC-Micro or CB-10); MonoPrice 5.1 Premium 10565; M&K Movie; JBL SCS 145.2 or JBL CS480.

Some examples of good 5.1/5.2 surround sound audio/video receivers. (Overall=low end).
- Low end = Onkyo HT-RC430 or Onkyo TX-SR313; Pioneer VSX-(522-K or 523-K); Denon AVR-(1513 or E200); Yamaha HTR-3066 or Yamaha RX-(V373 or V375);
- High end = Onkyo TX-NR(414 or 525); Pioneer VSX-(822-K or 823-K); Denon AVR-(1613 or E300 or 1713 or X1000); Yamaha HTR-(4065 or 4066) or Yamaha RX-(V473 or V475 or S600);

Some examples of good 7.1/7.2 surround sound audio/video receivers. (Overall=mid end).
- Low end = Onkyo HT-RC(R2295 or 460 or 560) or Onkyo TX-NR(515 or 616 or 626); Pioneer VSX-(1022-K or 1023-K or 42 or 43 or 60 or 70 or 1122-K or 1123-K); Denon AVR-(E400 or x2000 or 2113CI); Yamaha RX-(V573 or V575 or V673 or V675);
- High end = Onkyo TX-NR(717 or 727 or 818 or 828 or 1010); Pioneer VSX-(1222-K or 1223-K or 1323-K) or Pioneer Elite-SC-(61 or 63 or 71 or 72); Denon AVR-(X3000 or 3313CI or x4000 or 4520CI); Yamaha (HTR-7065 or TSR-6750WA) or Yamaha RX-(V773WA or V775WA or A720 or A730 or A820 or A830 or A1020 or A1030);

- Low end = Onkyo TX-NR929; Pioneer SC-(1522-K or 1523-K); Denon (none); Yamaha RX-(A2020 or A20130);
- High end = Onkyo TX-NR(3010 or 5010); Pioneer Elite-SC-(65 or 67 or 68 or 75 or 77 or 79); Denon AVR-4520CI; Yamaha RX-(A3020 or A3030);

what home speaker system/subwoofer should i buy?

R-Dog

I previously bought the Logitech Speaker System Z623. it supplied with what I needed. However I am looking to go bigger now without spending a whole lot more money. The 200 watt subwoofer delivered a powerful bass that a really did enjoy. However I would like to go bigger and im not sure if i should stick to a complete set or go with a tower system and subwoofer combo. I am a complete noob and becoming more and more interested on what is good and what is not.

So what i am really asking for is suggestions on speakers/subwoofers that offer a heart thumping bass and quality speaker sound. and all of around or under $150 (not trying to break my bank yet).

a few that i have stumbled on are:
1. Yamaha NS-F210BL 2-Way Bass-Reflex Floorstanding Speaker
2. GOgroove BassPULSE Hi-Fidelity 2.1 Speaker Sound System with Subwoofer
3. Harman Kardon Soundsticks III 2.1 Channel Multimedia Speaker System with Subwoofer
4. Logitech Speaker System Z553 with 40 Watts RMS Power and 3 Device Inputs

im also looking for easy setup as well.

Answer
2-4 are glorified computer speakers. The Yamaha speaker requires an audio receiver to drive it.

And, $150 is far too cheap to get good sound, beyond basic computer speakers.

Does the Logitech Speaker System Z623 work on tv?

elijah

I wanna buy a good speaker system for my tv and I saw that this one is affordable (I have a budget of $150)
I wanted to know if it works for watching tv and if it sounds good.

Thanks

Answer
I'm afraid Greg is totally wrong.

Home theater gear is NOT compatible with computer gear.

That speaker set is designed to work with a computer sound card which has 3 "headphone" jacks to feed the 6 speakers. Your TV, Cable box, BluRay player - none of these will have compatible outputs.

The other problem - computer speakers are designed to surround 1 person at a desk with sound. They are NOT room-filing. But young-and-dumb kids often crank them up and try to use them for their living room or bedroom systems. They wind up burning the speakers out in a few months.

So my advice is you should save your money and watch your local Craigslist for some used gear.

Questions about iPhone 5 adapters?

Kimberly

I'm going to be purchasing an iPhone 5 and I have a few questions regarding the adapters for docks and whatnot... I currently have an ilive speaker docking system to play music and charge my device. If I purchased an adapter, would it still work the same as with the old devices? As in, would the remote work, would it charge the iPhone, would it play music as well, etc. Also, could you suggest what kind of adapter to buy with these things in mind? thanks so much

Answer
Pretty much anything that connects to an iPod touch etc. Will charge your iPhone. Your ilive should charge it as well. Hope that answers your question .

Can I use the Logitech Speaker System Z313 with my laptop?

Chris J

I'm looking for some new speakers for my room, and I'm trying to decide between the Logitech Z313 and the Z323 models. I like the Z313 model because of the hand control, but I'm not sure if I will be able to plug in either of them to my laptop. If it helps, I have 3 USB ports, an ethernet port, a port (not sure what its called) that is used to plug in projecters to, a red mic port, a green "audio?" port, and a headphone jack. Please help me if you can; also a review on one or both of those systems would be great,
Sorry guys- just checked and the headphone jack is actually the green audio jack. My mistake.

Answer
Either speaker system will work with your laptop. They would connect to the black/uncolored audio jack (looks similar to the headphone jack), which should be labeled "Line Out". Unless the green is the only Audio Out that your laptop has, in which case the speakers would connect to that.

Feature-wise, the Z323 is better in that it has slightly better output power and range (30 Watts RMS & 40Hz-20kHz vs 25 Watts & 48Hz-20kHz), and it has multiple inputs, so you can connect more than just your laptop to it. If you do not need the extra inputs, however, then the Z313 will work fine; 5 Watts and 8Hz difference are not worth the extra $20 by themselves.

Sony Bass-Reflex 2way Speaker System -- Too quiet?

Lynn B

I got this pair 2nd hand.. they have computer speaker plugs. When I plug one into the computer sound comes out.. but it is so quiet you have to have the speaker up to your ear to hear it. I don't see a power plug or any way to adjust sound on the box itself.. does anybody know how these get set up??

Answer
My best guess, is that they are unpowered speakers, and won't work with a computer. You could try to find a cheap amplifier or receiver to power them.

Tips for 2.1 speaker system placement?

minikarter

I'm fussy about getting the best I can out of what I have. So I have some logitech 2.1 speakers. The satellite speakers have a small speaker pointing front and back, and the woofer has it's speaker pointing downwards with port forward (tho atm I've placed it pointing right). What is the best way to do get the best sound?

Atm the satellites are pointing forwards, about 2 feet left and right of my laptop, and the woofer is under the desk. But the bass doesn't seem to travel well unless you get under the desk or a few feet away.

Any tips?

The system I have is the Logitech Z323 .

Thanks in advance!

Answer
To have the best stereo effect, the two left and right speakers should be equally far away from your head. one left, one right...
The position of the sub doesnt really matter coz the human ears/brain cant really localize the deep frequencies which the sub produces.
A sub always sounds better when placed near a wall or in a corner.
Give it a try. In the end its really up to YOU and what sounds best to you
Hope that helps a bit
(p.s. the hole in your sub is not a speaker, its a bass reflex tube and should not be covered)

K

I am currently looking into buying a home theater system for my room, and at first I was going to look into a more powerful system but I realize I cannot have something too powerful because of the noise in my room with thin walls and neighbors nearby etc. However I was looking into both these Sound Systems (Philips Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer and Coby CSP96) and wasnt sure which to pick. The Soundbar with the woofer rlly interested me, but im not 100% sure bc i saw reviews of some ppl having difficulty or some negative comments. Likewise with the Coby CSP96. I was solely wondering which of these two is better?? I am aware Coby CSP96 is cheaper but in this case is irrelevant because with Dell I have Monetary credit that will lower the price of the Philips Significantly. Which will sound better, perform better, or overall be better???

Thank You And I Hope To Hear Your Response.
For Links on both products look up these Amazon links.

Coby CSP96 Home Theater Speaker System: http://www.amazon.com/Coby-CSP96-300-Watt-5-1-Channel-Theater/dp/B001U5U3HY

Philips HSB3280 Soundbar with Wireless Subwoofer: http://www.amazon.com/Philips-HSB3280-audio-system-player/product-reviews/B002KEHNQ8/ref=dp_top_cm_cr_acr_txt?ie=UTF8&showViewpoints=1

Also I am looking for something not too expensive due to my budget which is why I made the comment about the Dell Credit for the soundbar. But Thank You anyway for the suggestion. Im just still unsure of which to choose. The fact that the Philips can be conttrolled (including volume) from Remote is tempting (The Coby cant be remote controlled)...but still I will see which is best. If anyone has an opinion I rlly appreciate answers. Thank You Again
ALSO just to note I have an HDTV Samsung, which sound system would go better with it? I saw one review about the Philips saying it has an HDMI port which sounds great but is it really the better buy? Thanks in advance again.

Answer
Both brands are not quality brands and not very reliable. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on sound bars. Sound bars don't quite sound the same as if you had a separate speakers all around you. Any separate system will sound better than any sound bar any day. You just have to lower the volume. The Onkyo HT-S5200 is a separate receiver and a set of 7.1 speaker system that is worth looking at for around $500. Hope this will help you out.

Why am I getting speaker distortion?

Allen

I managed to find a pretty cool all-in-one stereo at Goodwill, RCA 5-Disc Changer, record+playback cassette deck, 6 ohms, came with 6 ohm speakers. SO:
6 ohms, 6 ohms speakers
120 volts
60hz
80 watts.

So, taking a chance (Come on,electronics frome Goodwil...) I buy this puppy for 15$.

I get home and hook it up, and to no suprise, the speakers aren't working. I try 3 different sets to no avail.
I plug in some headphones to the headphone jack, works great.
So after pondering, I had an idea:

I hooked up an FM transmitter to the headphone jack, grabbed an old Panasonic boombox (detachable speakers), take the speakers off and hook up the ones that came with the system. I set it on top of the stereo, set the speakers in they're proper places. and tune in on the boombox's radio. Work's like a charm.

Only one problem:

I'm getting speaker distortion.

The speakers that were attached to the boombox were rated at 2.7 ohms, and the boombox itself is rated at 2.7-8 ohms.

So why am I getting speaker distortion with these 6 ohm speakers.

I'm going to try a 8 ohm set now, I'll let you know how it works.

By the way, the boombox is 35 watts, but since the speakers are 80, this shouldn't be a problem, right?
Boombox.... little? Oh no... no...
Lol.

But yeah, I asked the same question in electronics>other and got the answer I was looking for. You'll still get best on this one though.

Turns out I was just overloading my FM transmitter, turned the volume on the stereo down, boombox up, works like a charm.

And besides it's not like I was looking for a stereo or wal-mart or something. I've got other much better stereos, but I just like projects and junk and stuff lol. Now my little bro has one in his room.

Sounds awesome too!

Answer
It should be good, but I think it could be your transmitter. Even though the transmitter isn't broken or faulty, the quality still isn't good enough to be able to pump out audio with little to no distortion. I'd say your best bet would be to maybe find a different stereo altogether. Also, RCA isn't the best brand to buy if you're looking for stereos or home theater systems. The 3 best brands to get would be Panasonic, Sony or JVC. It could be the stereo as well; the amp could just be old or it could even be your boombox. Maybe the specs meant 2.7 ohms to 2.8 ohms because it's just a little boombox, correct?

Anyway, you could try using a different method. If the boombox has RCA type jacks in the back or side or top or whatever (you know, the white and red jacks you find on TVs, VCRs and other electronics). If your boombox has these, then you can just buy a Y-adapter that plugs into the headphone jack of your RCA stereo and plugs into your boombox. That should work well. If not, check your bass settings and make sure your volume isn't too high.

Good luck!

How can i put together an inexpensive, but good surround sound system for my computer?

fbeetleson

Right now, i have a bunch of high quality speakers, meaning hundred dollar speakers plugged into a crappy, 80 dollar stereo system using speaker wire. From there, the stereo using a auxillary output via RCA to plug into my computer.

For a while, this was fine. But now, i'm coming to realise that this is a very low quality setup, yet my speakers cost a fortune. I think it's because of my stereo system- my computer has a pimped out sound card. I also thought it may be because i'm using RCA cable to connect it. My computer has a digital audio output, if it helps.

So, my question is, how can i reform my surround sound to:
a) give me SURROUND sound, and not just stereo sound
b) Actually sound good, without having that white noise coming from my speakers all the time.

Oh yeah, and i want to spend the least ammount of money i can: im in highschool. i dont have a job. =\

Any and all help would be very appreciated. =)

Answer
are ur speakers a matched set or all different?the best way would to buy a surround system from logitech or Cambridge.they have like 400 watt and can process digital signals.most home receivers cant process digital signals and ur white noise is probably coming from a ground fault in ur receiver.i have a logitech z-680 system that if had for about 6 years now and they sound great with the added bonus of all the extra input so u can have ur game system, computer,cd player, even ur ipod all hooked up ready to go.

How to hook up my surround sound Logitech Z906 Speakers to my TV?

Justin

I have the RCA cables and it didn't work! I really would like to do it I have an RCA tv even the model is L32H35D i think. My sound system is Logitech z906. Please help!
So I have a Optical cable for my laptop....I unplugged it and put it into my TV and it didn't work but I also have a USB adapter on my laptop connecting the output I really would like my TV to play through my sound system any ideas?

Answer
That is a nicer than normal speaker set.

It accepts optical so this is how you should hook into the speakers. Look on the back of your RCA television for a small black opening that says "Optical Output". Buy a Toslink Optical cable to run from this jack to the input on the Logitech system.

If the TV does not have an optical output, are you using a Cable or Sat box to feed TV signals to the TV? These almost always have an optical output.

Hope this helps.

Digital Coaxial vs. Digital Optical - Speaker System?

Corey

I plan on buying the THX Certified Logitech Z906 speaker system for my studio set-up, and I just had a quick question.

Both my computer, and the product have Digital Coaxial and Optical compatibility, and I was wondering which is best for video/audio production (provides highest quality). Both also have the traditional Analog system, but I suspect this is a less effective alternative.

Answer
On paper there shouldn't be too much between the sound, especially at the rate you're most likely using, it's a digital signal i.e. just 1's and 0's. Coaxial are more susceptible to ground loop (hum or buzz) but this is unlikely, Optical are more susceptible optical to jitter but again this is unlikely. Optical are more delicate and more likely to damage.

Personally I go for Coaxial every time and in the context of my system think it does sound better when I've used it. (AV amp and Squeezebox to DAC)

i want to if i`m choosing the right speaker or no?

sina z

in the specification of the speaker said that its power is 12 Watts RMS per channel(2 channel) & 24 Watts RMS Subwoofer.
but i want to know if this speaker is able to creat a great sound or no?(cuz i dont have anything to compare it with)
here is the link of the product if u wanna see it:

thanx for the help!

Answer
If I were you I would seriously reconsider. Did you buy an iPod so that you could listed to music or did you buy an iPod so that you could view photos on your television?

For less than $200 you could buy a 500 WATT stereo system! Here is an example of what I am talking about: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05790127000P?vName=Computers+%26+Electronics&cName=Audio+%26+Home+Theater&sName=Stereo+Systems
This stereo system will BUMP 500 WATTS OF MUSIC! This will blow away this 12 watt piece of junk your considering buying. If you buy a stereo system like the one in my link then all you need as an "RCA to headphone jack" cable OR a "headphone jack to headphone jack" cable to hook up the iPod. These cables cost no more than $10.

"RCA to headphone jack" cable:
http://www.rueducommerce.fr/hifi/images/produits/info/xl/HRCA.jpg
"headphone jack to headphone jack" cable:
http://img.alibaba.com/photo/11730506/Audio_Extension_Cable.jpg

Here are the features of the PlayDock Z500 and my thoughts on why it isn't worth the money:

- Big Screen TV entertainment
YOU CAN VIEW PHOTOS ON YOUR COMPUTER!

- Built-in Subwoofer/Bass Control
YOU CAN USE YOUR FEET TO WALK TO THE STEREO!

- Expansive connectivity
THIS ONE IS A JOKE! YOUR iPOD HAS ALREADY COMES WITH EXPANSIVE CONECTIVITY! JUST USE ONE OF THE CABLES I LISTED ABOVE.

- Indoor or outdoor entertainment
YOU WILL BE ABLE TO HEAR A 500 WATT STEREO FROM OUTSIDE AND BATTERIES WILL START TO ADD UP $$$-WISE

- Wireless remote control
GET OFF YOUR A** AND CHANGE THE CHANNEL. DO YOU WANT A REMOTE OR SOME SERIOUSLY BUMPIN' SOUND?!!!

You can even buy computer speakers for less than $50 that will sound better.

If I were you I would just ask myself if I want a cute and niffty little iPod speaker system or if I want BIG, CLEAR, BUMPIN' SOUND!!!

Wall mounted speakers for small restaurant? Wall mounted or very small receiver?

Looking in to buying a speaker system for music in a 400-500 sq. ft. restaurant front. Most custom restaurant systems are way too powerful and large for the room. I am considering running a home audio system but there's something a little tacky about that.

So, are there wall mounted speaker systems that don't require a subwoofer? That cover a wide spectrum of sound but don't need any extra punch? We don't need to crank the music and want to be space efficient.

Is there such an item as a cool looking wall mounted receiver? And how small do receiver systems get now? I've been out of the audio loop for a for a while.

Will run music with AirPlay on iPad. Need system to be as wireless as possible. Thanks!

(is this tl;dr material here? new to answers)

Answer
I own a restaurant, first thing you want to avoid is wireless. Why? Good question. Unless your router or internet connection can stay connected and work 100% 24/7 without need of reboot, okay then that's fine. But as we all know, these things need to be rebooted now and then and that will interrupt your service. It's just bad and embarrassing to have music stop in the middle of a song. Depending on how many speakers you want, best thing is just use in-wall ceiling speakers to have a more integrated look. Receiver can be hidden almost anywhere.

The truth is any plain speaker is fine. No one will notice how bad your stereo sounds or even how it looks. Well maybe if you have a fine dining restaurant then you want something more elegant and hidden, but most people will not care or even comment, except for what's on your playlist.

If full size sound is what you want, you really can't deny physics. Small speakers definitely will not provide that without a subwoofer. If in-wall ceiling speakers is out of the question, and bookshelf speakers is too large..Just off the top of my head, perhaps you can get a small set of PC speakers that uses a power outlet for power and just hook up the 3.5m directly to your iPad / Airplay? Then you won't need receiver.

In my restaurant I use 2 cheap outdoor-like speakers I cant even remember the brand. But they hook onto the wall with supplied brackets, hooked up through a old Onkyo integrated amp, playing through a ipod touch. Hope this info helps!

Making 2.1 Channel Speaker to 4.1 channel?

AnuP

I have Philips MMS4040F 2.1 speaker, i want to add 2 more satellite speaker. with it to make a 4.1.
How to do that? which type of 2 satellites i need to purchase? Is this harm my initial speaker system?

Answer
Adding two more speakers doesn't make it 4.1. For 4.1 you need four independent channels of information but Quadraphonic went out in the 1970's. These days most recordings are either 2 ch or 5 ch.

You can have four speakers set up as 2.1 but I doubt you can do this with the Philips. It almost certainly does not have the preamp outputs required to add an additional amplifier and you can't just connect additional speakers in parallel without overloading and damaging the amplifier in the Philips. Your best bet would be to just start over with a 5.1 receiver.

Akai AS-980 Reciever speakers?

Hippie

I got an akai as-980 quadraphonic reciever. It works but I know nothing about the speaker system. They have to have 4 wires I'd guess because there are 6 speaker inputs with 4 plugs for each speaker. What are they called and are these speakers hard to find? Cam anyone shed some light on this?

Thanks, Matt

Answer
hi matt hippie....the akai as-980 is a four channel stereo tuner/amplifier the four speaker plug/connectors are for connecting your speakers in a way what they called matrix four channel stereo....and the two speaker plug/connectors are for a two channel stereo connection...so you can run these speakers either way as i've just explained....hope this helps you out in some way matt and merry xmas!
