Home Theatre vs Sound system?

eskimo129

I'm looking for a good system mainly to play music and was wondering if I should try to piece together a sound system or just get a home theatre system since they are cheaper. My budget is $300. Would a home theatre system work as a good enough sound system to play loud music? If so, which home theatre system should I get? I've looked at a bunch of brands online, but I'm not sure what brands are a good, safe buy. Any advice would be great

Answer
You say you want mainly a music system. Will it be used only for music? If so I'd recommend an old fashioned stereo system. A stereo receiver, 2 speakers, and a small sub woofer. This is called 2.1 sound. Note that all receivers can do 2.1 also known as stereo. If you plan on using it for more than just music (i.e. gaming or home theater) you need a 5.1 system at a minimum. 5 speakers and a small sub woofer. $300 is a very low budget and you will not get something that sounds really good or really loud no matter what you get. A HTIB (home theater in a box) system would give you 5 cheap speakers, a small sub woofer, and usually an all in one unit that contains a DVD player and a power amp with some minimal switching capabilities.

A separate component 5.1 system would have an AV receiver, 5 speakers, and a sub woofer. There are also 7.1 systems but both of those are out of your price range.

I have an entry level system that I pieced together over a period of time. I had two cheap speakers (stereo) so I got an AV (audio-visual) receiver that cost me about $250. Some time later I got fantastically lucky and found a 5 speaker set on clearance that retailed for $600 on sale for $200. I got a sub woofer at the same time which cost me $350 with my tax refund. Along the way I got a cheap ($40) DVD player. A bit later I got a small hi-def TV set for $400. Then just a few months ago I got an HD-DVD player mainly for upscaling DVDs for $80. All told I spent about $820 for a decent entry level system. However my system is worth about $2100. I got lucky and shopped very well. You can see. why it took me awhile to build it up.

If you shop carefully you might be able to get a low end 5.1 AV receiver, 2 speakers, and a small sub for $300-$500. That would give you a start. Your other choice is a HTIB system which would cost $200-$1000. HTIBs are not nearly as versatile as separates but are cheaper. Separate components can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars on up.

Listen to everything you can both in your price range and a bit above it (for comparison) and let your ears be your guide.

Blu Ray Home Theater System with HDMI inputs and Built In Wireless Rear Speakers?

Chicken F

Are there any blu ray home theater systems like this right now? Preferably with the tall front speakers. Thanks.

Answer
This system has tall front speakers, wireless, and is Blu-ray as well. I'm not a fan of these systems, but if that's what you want it's more than adequate. I've bought from these people before and their customer service is the best. No surround speaker is 100% wireless. It still needs power and that will require you plug it in somehow. Speakers that are wireless tend to have issues with getting a full signal and limited frequencies. They have not or have ever been recommended. Good luck!

New Speaker System?

Jose S

im kinda new to mobile audio sound and i need some help. I wanna get this jvc speaker system in my car because i dont wanna make any modifications to it. The kit includes Two 6 1/2" woofers (small i know but thats the size of the replacement)two tweeters and two crossovers. I wanted a good sounding system but at the same time i wont even be hearin it cuz i got a 94 honda prelude with a new cat back and exhaust headers , plus i dont want my shit to start vibrating or rattling. so my question is the system has a 300 watt max power, Will it sound vibrant deep and clear but not excessively loud and Do i need to buy an amp as well?
and what the heck is 2 and 4 channel amps.

Answer
jvc isnt very good. and its not 6.5" woofers, its a component set. the mid and tweeter are apart instead of a 2way or 3way speaker. do u need front and rear or just front speakers? if u run the speakers off an amp they will be much louder. u wont get bad rattles unless u run a big sub

JVC home theatre system?

scrudriva0

Hi I have a JVC surround sound home theatre system and when I turn it up really loud it shuts off any idea why?

Answer
Assuming the system comes back on after you give it a chance to cool down, and only turns off when driven hard, it is probably a protection circuit cutting off power because driving the system hard is overheating something (or otherwise causing a fault). If the amp/receiver is enclosed (or even sitting on a carpet) and can't get sufficient cooling air this could cause the problem.

It is also possible there is a slight short across the speaker terminals ... usually this happens at any volume, but if it only showing up when driven hard may it could possibly indicate it is only one strand of wire.

A third possibility is that speaker impedence is too low for the system (but if they came with the system that isn't likely). This could occur if two speakers are wired in parallel, however.

I'd ensure proper ventilation, verify that the speakers are wired correctly, and see if it still happens. If only at high volume turn it down. If you feel it is happening at too low a volume check with the store you bought it from.

I have a system in which i need to have 2 amps and a crossover to hook up my speakers & subs, how do i do it?

jtotheizzo

this is a mobile dj system and im used to just having an amp an speakers but i have the club series amps that i need to hook up to it but i heard that i need an extra amp and a crossover. if anyone is knowledgable in this feild you help will deeply apreciated.

Answer
As this is a DJ system, this would fall under the non-existent âpro-audioâ category. Most home theater people will have no idea how to remedy this (for example the building your own crossover guy) I happen to run a pro-audio rental company, here is how they work: Most pro speakers are made to handle a certain range of sound best. Some handle higher tones best (Tweeters or horns) some middle tones best, some lower tones best (Subwoofers). To perform as well as they are intended to, each has to be sent only the sound they reproduce best. A crossover basically takes your signal that your mixer puts out, and splits it into the different frequencies. It sends the low notes to your subwoofers, your middle to the middle range speakers, and the high to the tweeters. Since you already know that you need a crossover and some amps, here is how to hook it up.

The output from your turntable mixer or CD player mixer (Usually 2 RCA plugs, or ¼â plugs) plugs into your crossover. Your crossover has 2 or more outputs for each channel. The low output on channel 1 goes to input 1 on your subwoofer amp. The low output on channel 2 goes to the channel 2 input on your subwoofer amp. Do the same for your main speakers. Channel 1 High output on the crossover goes to channel 1 input on your main speaker amp. And channel 2 high output on the crossover goes to your channel 2 input on your main speaker amp. Hook up your speakers to the amps as you usually do, and you got it. Now as far as getting a crossover, here are a few options:

Cheap:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Behringer-SUPERX-PRO-CX2310-Crossover?sku=182466
Middle:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/dbx-223XL-Stereo-2WayMono-3Way-Crossover?sku=183507
Nice:
http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Rane-SAC-23-Stereo-3Way-Crossover?sku=182713

All will do the job. For DJ applications, crossing over at 80-200 HZ is the normal way to do it. See what sounds best.
I hope this is helpful.

what is the best speaker system for my car?

nos Fidler

Hey guys/girls,
I am looking at a new speaker system for my car, but I have no idea of what to get.
My budget is around $2500, so i was looking at getting a 12" sub with amp, 2 6x9s (for the rear) and 2 6" speakers (for the front) with another amp to match. I want to keep it all the same brand.
I am more interested in quality then how loud it can go.
So what should i get? lol
Also what about soundstream or focals? i heard they are pretty good

Answer
Pyle PL63BL 6.5-Inch 360-Watt 3-Way Speakers quality and performance of these speakers is outstanding. The speaker itself is structurally sound and well manufactured. The performance is very good. The bass/midrange is powerful and tight (not muddled or soupy), the treble is very clear and crisp. For the price, these can't be beat. Unless you demand the best of the best, these are your speakers. Otherwise, you probably wouldn't be looking at these speakers anyway. I'm buying more for my other cars. They are great upgrades from factory speakers.

Answer
haha if you really wanna drop well over 3 grand on a car that looks like that when it's done thats your call but you cant just find full trunk molds online and if you can then the power to you

what you need to do is first decide how much you want to spend on the entire thing (trust me it adds up FAST)

then decide what you want to buy first (i'd suggest a head unit then an amp untill you blow factory speakers haha then you knida HAVE to get new speakers but thats just me)

then new speakers (again decide how much you wan't to spend and how loud you want them to be

then probably the subs.

and make sure neon is street legal where you live, it's illegal in a LOT of places trust me.

and i think theyre good. what you guys think of them? and any suggestions on which speakers to get. i get the newest speakers from logitech which are amazing, but thats just way outta my price range considering im planning on gettin a lot more stuff.

Answer
in speakers either get creative or logitech, I got a logitech 2.1 system and I am happy I did and creative is just as good, I've heard Altec Lansing makes the best speakers but their prices are twice of logictech and creative,

I compared a logitech and creative with that were equally loud and logitech was a bit cheaper so I got that(and I generally like logitech products)

outdoor speaker/radio system?

im looking for a radio system to put by riding ring where i ride my horses.
we just want a radio that we could keep either in the barn or near the ring and have speakers set up by the ring so that we could listen to the radio while riding.
ive seen this before where people have the radio in their house and the speakers are like outside on teh patio or something.
i was just wondering how i could do this and approx. what the price would be.
thanks for your help!

Help with a wireless indoor outdoor multiple room speaker system.?

Calvin

I am looking for a wireless speaker system that i can hook into my computer that will transmit a signal around the house and outside (around 50 to 60 feet from the base). Its mainly for my computer, but if I can hook it into my home theater system or an iPod up to it, that would be nice too.
If there are any that hook into the computer via USB and not an audio jack that would be great. That way i can use my existing computer speakers and place the wireless ones elsewhere. Having the options of multiple speaker additions to the system would be cool. Wireless speakers that are battery powered and AC powered would be nice. Also looking for a reasonable price from an authenticated dealer. Thank you.

No website names please, i could do that myself all day. Im looking for a link or name of an actual system.

Answer
SONOS, they have a system designed specifically for that, you can use your ipod while walking around the house as the remote if you like and switch volumes in each zone, play different music or the same etc. plus it has really good sound quality. but they are probably not reasonably priced for you, i dont know any company off the top of my head that makes a speaker that runs off of batteries that would do what you are looking for. if you want a cheaper alternative to sonos try sonys altus systems.

Speaker System Advice?

Scotty

I'm in college and next year I'm living in a house. I would really like to throw parties and obviously if you want to throw a party you need to have music. Loud music. I really need a system with a price range of $100-$300 that will deliver a loud and decent quality sound.

I'd been doing some research online and found:
VM Audio 5.1 Multi Media Surround Sound System
this product seems decent for the price. I admit I know almost nothing about speakers and their quality.

Could anyone tell me if these speakers will work?
If not, do you have any other suggestions within my price range?

Thank you!
VM Audio 5.1 Multi Media Surround Sound System EXMS581

Is $600 a realistic price for getting a sub, amp and 2 speakers?

Answer
Hmmm, well. I think Heco Victa 500 oder 700 would be okay as speakers. Maybe add a Heco Victa sub or some other good subwoofer. The question is: Do you want to go for a 2.1 system just now? You might consider some 5.1, 6.1 or 7.1 av-reciever ans upgrade to a surround system at a later time ... won't get all of that with 600 US$ though.

The problem is if you're specifically asking for a 2.1 system I at least suppose that listening to music would be the main focus for the system. If you want to do that I'm pretty sure you can rule out everything that's even close to being a "satellite-system" (let alone one with plastic cases), because those just don't deliver what you need to truly enjoy music. You'd want some decent standing speakers.

Well, the more I think about it the more I'd say: A good stereo speakers + sub + amp for 600 US$ = no, most likely not if you want decent quality. If I were in your place I'd save up for something like a good 6.1 av reciever/amp (denon? yamaha? would stuy some reviews, discussion boards) + 2 standing speakers (like for example the heco victa mentioned before) and save the sub for later and the surround speakers for sometime after that. ;)

Is KEF 2005.2 speaker set loud enough for large room?

What would be the best surround system for large room in basement?

Freedom Fr

Finished basement...TV on the wall..
The room has a low ceiling and is opened to the playroom.
3 walls + the open section to the playroom if you know what I mean. I would like to spend around $500.
Thanks for your inputs.

Answer
Just so you know, you cannot have the best surround system for a large room in a basement for $500. I dont mean to sound rude, but $500 is not even going to give you something average. An OK reciever is going to cost more than $500 just by itself. So throw words like best out of the window. What you need to find is an all-in-one system that comes with the speakers and the reciever (sometimes even a DVD player). Samsung, LG, Panasonic,... all make home theater in a box. They are not the best, but atleast you will have a surround system that you can enjoy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crisp Clear Sound, June 25, 2004

These speakers give much better sound than my old pair of speakers. They also look much better than just about any multimedia speaker out there. Of course, they cost more too. If you are looking for a good sounding, sharp designed set of speakers and can afford the $150-$200 price, get these. If these cost too much, but you still want something unique looking, try the JBL Creature II speaker set. It ranges $60 - $100.

A few things you cannot tell from the product description:
> These speakers (Soundstick II) are compatible with PCs. The original Soundsticks were only for Apples.
> The casing, though plastic, is very solid. I can't tell how scratch resistant it is though. I have not tried to scratch them yet...
> The subwoofer has a bass adjust knob.
> One of the satellite speakers has a touch volume control.
> The system does not have an on/off button. It designed to stay on all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything sounds perfect except metal stuff......, January 1, 2005
By L. Sion - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I set up my Soundstick in my bed room.. not with the computer, but with my iPod, I tried them with my iPod at various stores before I bought them. they sound much better than the JBL Creature 2, so if you are choosing between the two, you don't have to, go buy the Soundstick 2.

they are strongly built, very soild, they sound a little stiff brand new, but, you know, that's normal for audio speakers, especially the sub. I run them at low volume for few hours and they start singing right there, I put the satellites on the table top, about 2 feet from each other, and the sub under the table, have a lot of definition and "width" from the two tiny, and with the bass boost twist at the back of the sub, you'll be amazed how easy the balanced tone can be adjusted, and they sound very soild even in very low volume,

I tried pop stuff like Michelle Branch, Clay Aiken, sound very clean, and have a very good definition, jazz greats like Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, every instruments sound so distinct, and bands like Maroon 5, My Chemical Romance(it's esp good on trying stereophonic), Story of the Year, or even bit heavier Blink, or the D'n'B 4Hero, the Soundstick 2 still provide very good spectrum of different freq inside small area like my bedroom, thing like bassline and bass drum are audible and solid, yet highs like hihat and cymbal are clean but not ping, the overall performance is excellent, considering the price and size of the unit.

but when I turn to a even heavier side, like Pantera, Slayer, or Soilwork, Mnemic or Shadows Fall, those fast double bass rumbles are still audible, very clean, but even i boost the bass a little bit more, it still do not have enough power and air to be felt, i 'm not talking about that kinda floor shaking storm, but just not enough "heaviness", but i think it's partly due to the fact that I connected the Soundstick directly to the iPod dock.

Cons?! i'd be happier if the bass adjust knob is placed at the front of the sub, but not the back, so i can hear the difference in tone while i'm adjusting, without leaning real close to the sub, which on and off gave me the illusion of excessive bass. And they don't have any kind of indication on peak or threshold volume-wise, the touch volume control is good to use, but very often i'm worrying about if i would peak the system by turning too loud, especailly back when it's brand new.

I'd recommend everyone buying one of this for small room use, the Soundstick sound really great, and combine with artistic design, the blue LED is really a thoughtful attraction, which really add points for anyone who want their system to be more than ordinary audio speakers, but a feelie as well.

Looking for a good 2.1 speaker system?

Lili DeRoc

So I'm looking for a 2.1 speaker system for my computer. I typically listen to a lot of EDM, and dub step music. I've been looking around and so far I'm considering these ones: http://www.amazon.com/Cyber-Acoustics-Subwoofer-Satellite-CA-3602a/dp/B0027VT6V4/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=8428RMKBD4LI&coliid=I2EQEEMSBGGTDX

I've read a lot of good reviews about it, but I'm still skeptical. So if anyone could suggest a good 2.1 speaker system, that'd be great!

Car speaker system, amp, subwoofer, speakers?

navarady

Okay. I want to outset my car with a really loud set up. I want an extremely loud thumping subwoofer (or two) and speakers that I can turn up loud that wont blow out! I have no knowledge of what an amp is and which/what I need as far as those. Just what would you recommend me getting to create an amazing stereo in my car.
Thanks
PS I have a pioneer avic f900-bt as my stereo
Michael I am not allowed to email you
I need more answers on what to buy and what amps do

Answer
Extremely loud requires lots of power....

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery
3. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.box.net/shared/uchv4dbk88

You will need Microsoft Excel. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g

A second battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off.

A capacitor is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.
The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.

Can I run a 2.1 speaker system out of a subwoofer?

31331311

I saw a subwoofer with in and out and left and right terminals on the back. Can you plug other speakers into this and use the AVR RCA cable port to plug in iPods and Laptops (I only need sound)

Answer
If your subwoofer is a self amplifying one(has built in amplifier in it), you can plug in your ipod/device. Otherwise can't!.
To find out if it is self ampliying, Please check the spec of it.(most of multimedia speakers will be self- amp)
If yes, It is capable of running the other two speaker along with producing bass. All that you have to do is - get a "3.5mm to stereo splitter" jack which will have 3.5mm pin at one side and Red and White holes in the other side. sample pic here,... http://www.google.co.in/imgres?q=3.5mm+male+to+stereo&um=1&hl=en&sa=N&biw=1350&bih=660&tbm=isch&tbnid=ANpGUpAyXU2K9M:&imgrefurl=http://www.techenclave.com/gaming-consoles/lcd-gaming-console-131514.html&docid=ZpQiOLQFS6e6DM&w=212&h=212&ei=ycGSTvS_IeOiiQLWioHLDQ&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=82&page=1&tbnh=141&tbnw=151&start=0&ndsp=19&ved=1t:429,r:2,s:0&tx=87&ty=87
You need to connect audio cable ( Red+White) to one end of it and connect the other ends of the cable to Audio "IN" of the sub woofer and plug the 3.5mm ping to the ipod'/device's headphone jack.

What is the very best speaker system under $100 (cyber monday deals) with a lot of bass and good sound quality? Note: I am not looking for headphones

Answer
Jawbone Jambox wireless bluetooth speaker can be had for $119 on Amazon.com
I would think for the money Jawbone would be hard to beat. As you know you pay for bass, whatever you get will not raise eyebrows. A far better option would be to purchase a pair of Dayton Audio B652 bookshelf speakers for $43.83 ass to it LP-2020A Lepai Tripath Class-T Hi Fi Audio Mini Amp with power supply for $15.69. I assure you this would be the far better sounding set up under $100 anyone can imagine with money to spare. You may have to get a few cables for everything to come together but you would still be within your $100 budget. It will put a smile on your face every time you hear it.

You can fill your room with big, balanced sound (25 watts).
The compact subwoofer fits into tight spaces and delivers deeper bass when you want to feel the beat.
With its easy setup, just connect the speakers to the subwoofer, and plug the subwoofer into your computer. That?s it.

How can I plug a Logitech z313 speaker system to my LCD TV?

vader_mx_s

I recently bought this speaker system to use it with my laptop but I want to also plug it on my LCD TV. I have a LG scarlet ( 32Lg60)
Thanks for the answer; however I do not see any "out" on my TV, the only one for out is a Digital Audio Out Jack, the rest are In

Answer
Simple,
Get a cable from Electronics store made with 1/8" mini stereo headphone jack on one end and standard RCA type red and white stereo jacks on the other. These are common cables used to hook an iPod up to a home stereo. You will use them reversed with the stereo jacks hooked to the "audio out" on the back of the TV and the mini jack going to the "input" of the computer speakers. This is actually the most economical way to get great sound from a TV without purchasing an actual home theater system.

Good car speaker systems?

durnt

I recently just purchased an Alpine deck, and now im looking to get some new speakers for my car. I dont know a lot about speaker systems, and I was wondering what you would all recommend. Im hoping to spend under 300$ for equipment, but if a little extra gets me a substantial boost in quality ill consider it.

Answer
Speakers ae very subjective, and of personal preference, i may like something that you hate and visa versa. i would recommend going to a good car audio shop and take a listen, take a favorite cd, and test drive the speakers. for 300 you should be able to get some decent speakers all around. once you find a brand model you like, you could then shop online to find the best deal, woofers etc, is one place that has great values. you could also look at Crutchfield, they supply great directions and free harnesses for your vehical, so do it yourself is real easy when buying from them. I would stay away from best buy and the likes, typically thier stuff is overpirced for what it is.
since you asked for brand i feel obligated to through out a few names for you, but i still urge you to take a listen before you buy.

Boston acoustic
Diamond Audio
image dynamics
MB quart

These are names that are less mainstream, but i assure you they are serious about car audio. Also keep in mind that round speakers typically distort less and sound cleaner that the same series in a oval shape, however ovals can produce more bass in tight areas.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Bose speaker system for a car?

qwerty12

I just got a 2007 toyota camry, everything stock. I love the sound of bose speakers for home use, but does bose sell speakers for a car? If so where can you buy them, and do they even sound good? Thanks

Answer
yes they sell car speakers
they are hard to find in stores and on the web, because all of their speakers are "designed" for specific car applications, and are "tuned" for specific cars by their placement (sound stage)
they sound good but are over priced for what you get, your best bet would be to look into JL Audio (over priced) or Infinity components (not full range, 2 ,3 ,or 4way speakers- you want the tweeter separate from the mid bass driver for best sound quality)
here is a link to their website http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/automotive/index.jsp

Optical Audio Conversion for Speaker System?

Chris

I want to attach my home speaker setup to the new Xbox One coming out. The only audio out options for the Xbox One are through SPDIF Optical or HDMI. Since the HDMI will be hooked up to my TV and my Samsung HD TV has no audio out option I cannot use the audio from the HDMI. I've never used SPDIF before and my speaker system will accept either Analog RCA or a 3.5mm Stereo Jack. Is my only choice to buy an adapter that converts the audio from SPDIF Optical to either analog RCA or 3.5mm?

Can I buy one cord with SPDIF Optical male on one side and RCA/3.5 male on the other?
Or do I have to buy a conversion box that requires power and a SPDIF Optical cord and a RCA/3.5mm cord?

Simply put: I want Optical audio converted to either Analog L/R RCA or 3.5mm Stereo Jack with as least parts as possible.

Thank You!
Are there converter boxes that don't use power? I'd hate to waste a outlet spot for a simple audio mishap.

Answer
A passive "cord" will not convert the pulsed light of the Optical Digital (aka Toslink) out of the XBox One to the Analog RCA inputs of your sound system. You need an active converter like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Coaxial-Toslink-Converter/dp/B007S6U7I4

Note that this one also converts Coaxial Digital audio to analog RCA.
There are many others that do the same thing - search [optical digital to analog rca audio converter] to find them, NOTE: do be careful - don't get an Optical Digital to Coaxial Digital converter - these are available also but won't do you any good (like this):

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?seq=1&format=2&p_id=2948&CAWELAID=1329448148&catargetid=320013720000010661&cadevice=c&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CJapo93Y57oCFfFAMgod9QkAcA

Optical and Coaxial digital are different varieties of the same S/PDIF (Sony/Philips Digital Interconnect Format) digital audio signal, but are incompatible, as Coaxial is all electronic and Toslink (TOShiba LINK) is light, carried on fiber optic cable (single or multiple strands of glass in high-quality cables, or more often clear plastic).
Finally, are you certain your Samsung HDTV has no audio out? Very few HDTVs have none, with the majority being Toslink and many Coaxial and still a few Analog outs on older models. Check your manual or the back of your TV to be sure, as you can go from the TV's Out instead of the XBox to your sound system with the same converter and get "audio follow video", meaning whatever source is what you are watching (Game console, DVD/BD player, cable/satellite/OTA, etc) the audio from that source will automatically be fed to the sound system when you switch sources. Something to consider - Good luck!

A good 5.1 channel surround speaker system with optical digital input?

Arvind

Friends, I am seeking to purchase a good 5.1 channel surround speaker system having an optical digital audio input. Please suggest me.

Answer
JBL 5.1 Channel SCS145.5 Surround Cinema Speaker System work great. Other then the need to switch out the stock speaker wire for something a little more hefty like say, 12 gauge, the sound quality is far more then I expected. The powered subwoofer is Ok, but I wanted something heavier - at least a 10". I got a 12", 400 watt subwoofer, and I think my neighbors don't like me anymore :) I would recommend JBL speakers over BOSE speakers any day!

Can someone explain speaker systems to me?

jl_0517

I'm interested in purchasing a speaker system (preferably 4.1 or 5.1). Can someone explain to me what exactly what makes a good speaker system? I looked at some high end speakers and low end speakers and what sticks out to me the most is watts. Can someone give me a detailed explanation of all the ins-and-outs about speakers? Things like RMS, total watts peak power, the different length drivers, satellites, etc.. Best answer goes to the most explanatory and helpful! Also showing me some deals would also be helpful. No need to explain sound cards to me though. Thanks! :]

Answer
Power ratings tell you absolutely nothing about a speaker system's sound quality. Besides, most big-name retailers sell systems with inflated or flat-out dishonest power ratings anyway.
But, since you asked, I'll tell you what the terms mean.

Power is how much power (electricity) a speaker system can handle without being damaged (and contrary to what xxxnullifierxxx said, power ratings actually rate how much power it can have sent INTO it, not how much power it puts out). RMS power is how much power it can handle continuously, and peak power is the absolute maximum amount it can take, even if for a short amount of time.

Now about the different types of speaker systems. There are 3 different types of speakers you will hear about: subwoofer + satellite, bookshelf speakers, and floorstanding speakers.

Subwoofer + satellite speakers are composed of 1 big speaker for bass (the subwoofer) and smaller speakers for midrange and treble. Advantages: take up less space. Disadvantages: sound quality often suffers, since many of speaker manufacturers try to make their satellite speakers as small as possible (more about this later).

Bookshelf speakers: speakers where all the sound (bass, treble, etc) come from 1 speaker rather than a satellite and a subwoofer. This design is advantageous because the sound quality is often better than subwoofer + satellite designs. So, instead of having 1 subwoofer and 2, 5, 6, or 7 satellites (depending on whether you have stereo or surround sound) you just have 2, 5, 6, or 7 bookshelf speakers. These bookshelf speakers can range from about 1ft x 0.5ft x 0.5ft to about 3ft x 1.5ft x 1ft.

Lastly, we have floorstanding speakers, which are similar to bookshelf speakers except each speaker is bigger---big enough to stand by itself on the floor, hence the name.

Now to talk about drivers and crossover frequencies. The driver is the part of the speaker that actually produces the sound waves (tweeters, woofers, etc). Generally, the larger the diameter of the driver (and generally, drivers are circular, though there are some exceptions--some woofers are square, for example), then the lower the frequencies (pitch) it can produce. For example, a driver with a diameter of 3 inches generally can't produce frequencies below about 200 to 250 Hz. This is where the problem lies with many subwoofer + satellite systems: many manufacturers are trying to make their satellites smaller and smaller and thus they can't produce the lower frequencies as well. So now, you will hear a gap between the bass that the subwoofer produces and the higher frequencies the satellites are producing. Some speaker systems try to compromise for this by making their subwoofers produce both bass and some higher frequencies also, but this introduces another problem into the sound: these slightly higher frequencies are more directional than the bass. So, if the subwoofer produces only bass, you can place it in various spots in the room (in front of you, behind you, etc) and hear no difference. However, if the subwoofer produces bass and some higher frequencies too, then you can hear a difference in sound depending on where the subwoofer is located. In fact, this problem has become quite widespread: a few manufacturers are actually trying to make satellite speakers using multiple tiny 1" speakers (THOSE SPEAKERS SOUND HORRIBLE!!!!). For example, many subwoofers sold in commercial stores (Sears, Walmart, etc) actually produce so many of the higher frequencies that, if you were to disconnect the satellite speakers, you could still hear all the voices in a movie or TV show; that is, you could still follow the dialogue with the satellites unplugged. This is quite inconvenient, since originally these systems were designed to allow you to have only small speakers in sight and allow you to stash the big subwoofer almost anywhere without affecting sound quality.

Bookshelf speakers, meanwhile, usually have (depending on the model) either 2 or 3 drivers inside. Unlike the subwoofer + satellite design, however, each speaker is intended to be treated sort of like a satellite speaker (meaning that you place it to the left or right of you instead of just placing it out of sight like the subwoofer). Thus, the directionality thing is not an issue.

Floorstanding speakers work basically like bookshelf speakers, except they are larger and taller usually.

Lastly, there are some other things to keep in mind when buying a speaker system:

~ Sturdy cabinets/enclosures (the things that house the drivers). Heavy, thick wood (MDF, HDF, plywood, etc) is a good thing. Plastic, especially thin plastic, is a bad thing. You see, as the drivers produce sound waves, they produce them both in your direction and they also produce them inside the speaker's enclosure. If you have a flimsy plastic enclosure, the vibrations produced inside the enclosure will make the speakers' cabinets vibrate too, thus adding extra, unwanted sound waves. By the way, most computer speaker systems and most home-theater-in-a-box systems you see at major retail stores are very poor in this category: thin, flimsy plastic for the satellites and thin 3/8-inch particleboard for the subwoofer. Many floorstanding or bookshelf speakers sold in major retail stores also use the poor-quality 3/8" particleboard for speaker cabinets.

~ Distortion. Thanks to the laws of physics, speakers can't produce the sound waves exactly as they are supposed to be produced. Even the highest quality speaker systems in the planet introduce a few extra artifacts into the sound that weren't supposed to be there and still can't produce every single little sound in the sound recording. There is a way to measure how much the speaker changes, or distorts, the sound when it produces it, and this is called THD (total harmonic distortion). There are some other measurements as well, but I don't know much about them (plus you don't need to worry about them) so we'll stick to the basics. THD is expressed in percentages. Aim for less than 1% when buying a speaker system; any more and the added imperfections in the sound they produce will become quite obvious. Here is where many speaker systems deceive you: as you force them to take more and more power, thus forcing them to play louder, they add more distortion to the sound. Right now, many of the systems sold at major stores base their power ratings on 10% THD, meaning that if they are rated for 1000 watts, they will really be producing 10% THD at that power level (that is A LOT of added imperfections in the sound and it will sound atrocious). If you were to measure how much power they could handle while still playing with a reasonable amount of THD, the power ratings would be much lower. Additionally (and here is yet another reason why power ratings are meaningless) many manufacturers measure these ratings in more deceitful ways than just the THD issue. Many systems nowadays come with a built in power supply that can only supply a certain amount of power to the speakers. If you have a surround sound system, that limited amount of power may have to be divided up into 7 or more speakers. Now, in the real world, if you are using your surround sound system to watch a movie, you're probably going to have sound playing out of all 5 speakers at once: some dialogue in the front speakers and some background sound effects in the back speakers, for example. However, many manufacturers calculate their power ratings when only ONE speaker is playing at once, meaning that the system's power supply does not have to divide its efforts up between 5 to 8 different speakers. Then the manufacturer multiplies that number by the number of speakers, thus achieving an extremely unrealistic power rating. Additionally, if you want to play your speakers loud (I know a lot of people do--and unfortunately, volume seems to be the only thing people care about nowadays) then power rating tells you nothing about the volume levels the speakers can produce. Some speakers are very efficient and can put out over 100 decibels (dB) of sound, easily enough to cause permanent hearing damage, when fed less than 10 watts of power; other, less efficient speakers can't produce that volume level when being fed 100 watts of power. And lastly, neither power ratings nor volume are an accurate way to judge how high-quality a speaker is or how good it sounds. There are some speakers, both high wattage and low wattage, that will sound bad at any volume, and some speakers, both high and low wattage, that will sound good at any reasonable volume (meaning any volume that isn't absurdly high). So there's really no way to judge whether a system will meet your needs based on its power rating.

And lastly, to warn you against that idiot xxxnullifierxxx--the Logitech system he references is not a driver free system. Drivers, remember, are the actual components that produce the sound waves. So a driver free system would not produce any sound. And trust me, that system is not high-end. It's a computer speaker system, the satellites' enclosures are made of flimsy plastic, and I have never met any computer systems (Logitech or otherwise) who use sturdy materials for the subwoofer enclosure.

Sorry, I think I explained some topics better than others, but you get the general idea.

I need help buying a speaker system?

lala

So I'm planning on buying some new speakers.
I currently have some BOSE Companion 2 Series II, my problem?
The sound is horrible. The Bass etc.
I was like 12-13 when I bought them and I had no clue on what to look for.
I'm looking for some speakers, studio speakers, theater system. Anything.
Something with a good amount of bass and will play crisp sound yah know?
I dont have a limit right now so anything goes.

~~ I play games, and make some music here and there, and listen to a lot of music.
** The speakers will mostly be used with the computer or an iPod.
~ Shelf systems are cool to.

Either give me links to some speakers or lecture me on how to choose the right ones.

Thanks~ :D

Answer
One thing is certain, when it comes to home theatre, "Creative" is not best! You already have toy speakers with your Bose, you don't want an even crappier toy.

It would take volumes of books to explain everything there is to know about this. I would suggest you start by finding and visiting a high-end home theatre or audio shop. I'm not talking about a Best Buy with a Magnolia, you need to find a real audio shop. Listen to some nice B&W's or similar in the $5000 to $25,000 range. I know that's out of budget but you need to first get an idea what a real audio system is. Step up your understanding of sound reproduction and of listening.

Unfortunately no speaker company supplies you with useful specifications so it's almost completely pointless to even look at these. Maybe with a high-end speaker you can at least get relatively accurate on axis frequency response data but that is only about 0.05% of the information you need. They will not supply you with detailed non-linear distortion data probably because they don't have it, maybe don't even know how to measure it. In fact they won't supply you with any distortion data, non-linear or linear. They might supply you with some off axis frequency response data but probably only to about +/- 30 deg. You really need 360 deg data but the results much beyond +/- 30 will typically be so bad they will not want you to see it. This is an inherent problem with conventional speakers, it's not a quality issue, it's just an inherent design flaw that doesn't change from the cheapest to the most expensive mono pole speaker designs. To avoid it completely you have to go to some sort of true omni directional speaker like the Duevel http://www.duevel.com/Produkte/EBLdia.shtml but this isn't necessarily optimum either since it maximizes room excitation. Dynamic dipoles like the Linkwitzlab Orion http://www.linkwitzlab.com/ do not have the power response uniformity of a true omni but they are far more uniform than a conventional monopole with less room excitation than conventional monopoles.

As for conventional designs, one of the big factors that degrades sound quality is the cabinet or box. You want to listen to the speaker cones, not to the cabinet walls. If you feel the vibration in the cabinet walls while the speaker is playing then you also hear the cabinet walls. Some cheap speakers actually radiate more acoustic energy from the cabinet walls at select frequencies than from the cones. This contaminates the sound making it sound very garbled. That's why better speakers are made from 3/4" to 1" MDF with internal bracing in an effort to reduce cabinet resonance. This is an advantage of speakers like the Orion because it has no box.

Poorly designed crossovers also make a major difference. Most inexpensive speakers use inadequate crossovers frequently with nothing more than a capacitor or a capacitor and inductor on the tweeter and nothing on the woofer. Cone resonance in the woofer must be eliminated to reduce the harshness of the speaker. A simple 2nd order crossover on the woofer can reduce this problem significantly but to do it properly requires notch filters. Especially modern drivers using various metal materials for cones need to have special attention paid to this. Unfortunately a lot of manufacturers brag about these metal cones and use them improperly without the proper equalization. Some metal cones break up so violently they produce high Q +20 dB or greater peaks that can only be completely eliminated with active equalization.

Subwoofers are a really good idea. If you really want decent bass you need to forget about going for bigger main speakers, just go for small to medium size main speakers and put the bass load onto a subwoofer. You can find a lot of good measurement data on subwoofers here... http://www.hometheatershack.com/forums/subwoofer-tests-archived/6015-index-subwoofer-tests-manufacturer-model.html If you study these measurements and understand them, it will help you to understand what to look for in a sub. Notice that non linear distortion is very high on pretty much all of them at very low frequency. It's really difficult to make a low distortion subwoofer and I do not know of any commercial offerings that are even close to good enough. You can look for those that have less distortion than others and you can look for those where odd harmonics are lower than even harmonic components. Odd harmonics are more destructive to sound quality than even. Sometimes a little even harmonic content can be a good thing if it helps to mask the odd harmonics.

Study the data on the subwoofer site and study the information on the linkwitzlab site. Also, go listen to some high end stuff so you know what's possible. Stay away from toys like Bose and Creative.

2004 Chrystler Pacifica, no volume?, that has a Infinity speaker system, 200-watt amplifier, graphic equalizer?

Michalennn

I have a 2004 Chrystler Pacifica, that has a Infinity speaker system, 200-watt amplifier, graphic equalizer, everything works and turns on, Tv picture works, navigation system works, there is just no volume, and I was told it might be my graphic equalizer, can anyone please educate me more on this and let me know how to fix or check it. Thanks
All fuses are fine. Switched out player for new factory one so it would have no compatability issues, and still didnt work, switched out amp too in same manner, still didnt work, volume wise. Can you tell me where to locate the equalizer?

Answer
It can sometimes be hard to pinpoint a problem like this one. You might have to troubleshoot your system. The easiest thing to do is to check the fuse on your amp. Sometimes when you burn out a fuse on the amplifier you'll have problems with no sound. When you run the stereo at high volume, once in awhile you can blow a fuse or if you're grounding out someplace. But if it is a ground out problem that could really be a pain to find. If that's fine, check your other fuses throughout that contribute directly to your sound system like your factory fuse box. Keep in mind that decks can blow out as well. Sometimes they'll turn on and look like their running but that doesn't mean their not blown. Start from the fuses and work your way up. I wouldn't count out the equalizer but that might be the least of your problems to be honest with you. Good Luck!

about bose speaker system?

jeenu

hi every one i have just bought bose acoustimass 30 powered sub and cube speakers and i dont have any receiver do i really need a receiver or i can connect them to my samsung blue ray player if i have to buy a receiver for that which one is compatiable exept bose ones becoz its to expensive..thnx

Answer
The Bose system has an equalizer built in to compensate for the lousy quality of the miniture speakers. The amplifier only powers the subwoofer component. Thereofore you have to use an audio amplifier (or receiver) to power the speakers. While one of the (many) issues with Bose speakers is their use of proprietary connectors you can use any amp/receiver and don't need one made by Bose. All you have to do is make sure the right output on the amp is connected to the right input on the acoustimas ... using speaker wire (i.e with one conductor clearly differentiated from the other) to ensure correct "phasing" (+ to + or red to red, whichever approach your amp uses. It doesn't matter which wire is +/red, as long as all follow the same code).

In general you have wasted your money on Bose speakers. They are mediocre at best and way overpriced relative to many, many other options. Since the Acoustimass 30 was only sold until 2001 I assume you bought used ... so I hope you got them for a good price.

Sony Bass-Reflex 2way Speaker System -- Too quiet?

Lynn B

I got this pair 2nd hand.. they have computer speaker plugs. When I plug one into the computer sound comes out.. but it is so quiet you have to have the speaker up to your ear to hear it. I don't see a power plug or any way to adjust sound on the box itself.. does anybody know how these get set up??

Answer
My best guess, is that they are unpowered speakers, and won't work with a computer. You could try to find a cheap amplifier or receiver to power them.

Tips for 2.1 speaker system placement?

minikarter

I'm fussy about getting the best I can out of what I have. So I have some logitech 2.1 speakers. The satellite speakers have a small speaker pointing front and back, and the woofer has it's speaker pointing downwards with port forward (tho atm I've placed it pointing right). What is the best way to do get the best sound?

Atm the satellites are pointing forwards, about 2 feet left and right of my laptop, and the woofer is under the desk. But the bass doesn't seem to travel well unless you get under the desk or a few feet away.

Any tips?

The system I have is the Logitech Z323 .

Thanks in advance!

Answer
To have the best stereo effect, the two left and right speakers should be equally far away from your head. one left, one right...
The position of the sub doesnt really matter coz the human ears/brain cant really localize the deep frequencies which the sub produces.
A sub always sounds better when placed near a wall or in a corner.
Give it a try. In the end its really up to YOU and what sounds best to you
Hope that helps a bit
(p.s. the hole in your sub is not a speaker, its a bass reflex tube and should not be covered)

I just got birthday money for a speaker system and I'm looking for the best sound for my money. I've been looking at the Logitech z-2300, but they seem kind of outdated? These will be used on my computer. I won't listen to them on too high of volume, but I'd like them to be able to still sound clear even when turned all the way up.
Thanks.

Answer
You really do get what you pay for with speakers. Your best bet is to go on Bestbuy.com, tigerdirect.com, newegg.com, and sears.com and check out reviews of speakers. Every brand has their flops and golden speakers. Why not listen to someone who has already owned them?

What computer sound system can you suggest, for a guy who wants to make electronic music?

Arlh

Hey everyone
Christmas is coming up and i wanted to add a few wishes to my wishlist. Does anyone out here have any recommendations for a great computer sound system (speakers and bass). In particular, something that doesnt cost much more than 250£, but still has a kicking bass and top-notch sound quality, if that is even possible.
On a side note, do you have any recommendations for a good midi keyboard?

Answer
You really need to go out and listen for yourself. For everyone that claims that brand x or model y is the best, there is an equal opposite opinion. What some people call deep bass others won't, or they will find it loose or boomy. Since you will be making electronic music through them, they will essentially be part of the instrument, which is probably not a good thing. With electric guitar, the speakers are a big part of the sound, which is why so many guitar plug ins for recording have speaker emulation. You will probably want the speakers as neutral or 'clinical' sounding as possible, to avoid having the sounds dependent on your particular speakers. Also, make sure you look at the issue of durability. You can put out some pretty nasty waveforms digitally, and this can fry high frequency drivers and crossovers in cheaper speakers. Another concern would be what listening environment the speakers will be placed in. Near field monitors are usually not very good at imaging, except in a very tightly defined area. In other words, high frequency beaming means the treble response will drop off if the listener is not right in the sweet spot, where the full range comes through, so these would not make good speakers to fill a room. There's a ton of choices, so your best bet is to stick with speakers sold by music stores, rather than trying to get the most watts for the least money. Of all the websites I've found, http://www.Sweetwater.com has the widest selection, best organization and most thorough descriptions and reviews overall. So, I'd start there and narrow down the choices to something manageable and then search for a couple of more reviews on other sites, and then search for the best price/service deal.

As for a midi keyboard, that depends on what you are looking for: a strict midi controller, a keyboard with built in sound capability, or something with integrated control surface, such as transport controls for start/stop while recording, pads for percussion, etc. Something else to research at Sweetwater.

How much is my car worth?

Gorilla

I went on KBB and they didn't give me the option to include all the work I put into it.

2003 Mercedes-Benz S500 with 70149 miles
I put brand new LED headlights.
I also upgraded the front and rear bumpers to the AMG kit.
I also upgraded the exhaust system to the AMG Dual exhaust system (purrs like a kitten).
the color of the car is black (no Scratches)
and the interior is black leather.
I also installed 22 inch asanti 3 piece rims worth $2600
the only thing that is wrong with the car is that the speakers don't work at the moment. ($800 Service to fix it)

other than that the car is in perfect condition.

How much is my car worth? ....Thank you.

Answer
I would go to www.kbb.com enter all questions and pick sell out-rite. The reason I say this is based on where you live changes the value of a veh. With things being modified to some people looking at a car some things that you or I think are improvements may discourage buyers

What is the best Home Theater system in terms of sound quality and picture under $1500 each?

elmogunit

So Im getting a home theater but i need to know what the best reciever for 5.1 is or if i even need one if I get the bose 321, the projector type, if bose 321 will work with it and my ps3 and the resolutions must be 1080p. Just about everything you need for a home theater but good quality for low price

Answer
first of all don't buy the bose 321 systems, they are worthless for the price they make you pay. I guess I am not clear on if you are talking about paying under $1500 for a tv and another under $1500 for sound or planning on using the 1500 for everything. in your question you are talking mostly about sound stuff but then you throw in the 1080p resolution, which has absolutely nothing to do with your sound system. It sounds like you are using the 1500 for just the sound system so let me help you out with that. there are two ways that you can look at this, and it will depend on how you want your system to work. I don't know if you were looking at the bose systems because of the fact that it only has two speakers which would mean less wires or what. Personally piece together systems are a lot better system when you consider quality and accuracy of the sound.

here is a good example of a sound system that would be awesome for $1500

-$300 yamaha receiver - 5.1
-Klipsch B-2 bookshelf speakers - $300 per pair
-Klipsch surround speakers (i believe they are the S-1 or S-2 model)
-approx, $200 per pair
-Klipsch center channel approx. $200
-sony 12" subwoofer $200 (klipsch sub would be better, but I am trying to stick to your budget since the klipsch sub is $400 for their 10" size)
-100' spool of speaker wire $30 for offbrand, $60 for monster
-fiber optic cable to go from your ps3 to your receiver for sound $20 for off brand, $40 for monster
-subwoofer cable $15 for off brand, $30 for monster

probably just over $1300 after tax

Front projector:
For your picture if you are doing a front projector, go with a DLP projector first of all, much better for your movies, smoother images, better color accuracy. for your price you would have to go with optoma in order to get a 1080p front projector for $1500, and it would have to be on sale, probably.

Rear projection (LCD or DLP Rear projection)
Sony is all I have to say here, just get whatever 1080p size that you can squeeze into your budget

Also, anyone who has been signed/ made famous by Disney or Nickelodeon does not count, because they are cheap test tube babies made only as a genetic experiment to entertain young girls who have no idea what real music is.

Answer
The ORIGINAL California Jam.

1974, Corner of Ontario Motor Speedway

250,000 people. Though stats always say 200 . . . I was there, it was more. There were 200 K tickets sold . . . does not count the thousands that snuck in.

6 AM to 2 AM the next day

At the time, the loudest sound system ever built for an outdoor concert . . . on stage, 32 boxes with two 24" speakers in each, giving 16 on each side of the stage, about 100 feet back from the stage, 16 of the same, giving full quadraphonic sound which was totally unbelievable when ELP hit the stage. I was right in the middle, 50 back from the stage.

* Rare Earth
* Earth, Wind and Fire
* Eagles
* Seals & Crofts
* Black Oak Arkansas
* Black Sabbath
* Deep Purple
* Emerson, Lake and Palmer

No concert before or after has ever even come close in terms of overall awesomeness (and I've been to a few before and after.)

If you have to ask why, I feel sorry for you. :-)

Different Speaker Output - Re-Uploaded! Last one got deleted before I read the answer?

killerdom2

Hey! Basically, My default output for audio is realtek speakers. When I plug my headphones in the front of the PC, it doesnt give me a separate audio output, rather it plays my speakers through my headphones. I was wondering if there was a way to make it treat my headphones as separate speakers and then I could choose to have my skype play only through my headphones, while playing something else out of my speakers.

Thanks for the help.

Answer
Only a Quadraphonic system can do that. Check the control panel foe Realtek. It can be set there.

Can a Bluetooth speaker connect wirelessly to a Panasonic viera tv?

The speaker system I have is iLuv mobiout. It has Bluetooth which I can connect my phone and computer to. I'm not sure of the exact model of my tv, but it was bought in 2011 and has wireless capabilities (Netflix). I tried looking online but found no results.

Answer
First of, your tv only provides you with an optical audio output. This is a digital signal that is encoded by Dolby Digital. You will need a Dolby Digital decoder that can be found in a AVR, Home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar. Your speakers does not have a decoder. Wireless technology are mainly for small device like you Ipod and phone. Even when money is no object, you are not going to find wireless technology in the higher end of the audio. Hope this will help you out.

How Should I hook up a sound system?

Matt L

Right now I have an HD Fios box going to my Panasonic Plasma through an HDMI cable.

Tomorrow I'm getting a Bose 3 Speaker system and I'm not sure which device I should run it through first. If someone could help me out or offer any other tips I'd appreciate it.

Answer
On your Fios box there should be a set of red and white RCA jacks that are for audio. Simply take a set of red and white RCA cables and connect the Fios box to the audio input (or auxiliary input) on the Bose system.

The Fios box can output audio on both the HDMI and RCA cables at the same time.

When you want to use your speakers, turn the TV volume down, turn on the Bose system and set it to use the input.

This way you can choose whether to use the TV's or Bose speakers.
