Does the Logitech Speaker System Z623 work on tv?

elijah

I wanna buy a good speaker system for my tv and I saw that this one is affordable (I have a budget of $150)
I wanted to know if it works for watching tv and if it sounds good.

Thanks

Answer
I'm afraid Greg is totally wrong.

Home theater gear is NOT compatible with computer gear.

That speaker set is designed to work with a computer sound card which has 3 "headphone" jacks to feed the 6 speakers. Your TV, Cable box, BluRay player - none of these will have compatible outputs.

The other problem - computer speakers are designed to surround 1 person at a desk with sound. They are NOT room-filing. But young-and-dumb kids often crank them up and try to use them for their living room or bedroom systems. They wind up burning the speakers out in a few months.

So my advice is you should save your money and watch your local Craigslist for some used gear.

i cant seem to get my speaker system to work?

Joseph Zac

I'm currently using JBL speakers, i'm not quite sure what model. The speakers and sub woofer are black and have a rounded, dome-like shape. If i plug the speakers directly into the computer, they work just fine, so i know its not the speakers. If i plug the audio cable into my tower and monitor, my monitor's built in speakers work, so i know there is nothing wrong with the audio cable. but for some reason, when i plug the audio cable into my tower and sub woofer, and my speakers into the sub woofer, i get no sound. I know the sub woofer is getting power because the light is on. so, why is it that my speakers work, my audio cable works, but when all connected to my sub woofer, which i know is receiving power, i don't get any sound?
this speaker system has worked with my computer before, so i know they are compatible. any just in case anyone was wondering why i don't just use my monitor's built in speakers or plug my speakers directly into the tower and use them that way, its because the sound is very hard to hear when done that way and i don't have any bass when they are used that way.
Neither the speakers nor the sub woofer work when the speakers work when the speakers are connected to the sub woofer.

Answer
I hope that something is wrong in your sub woofer amplifiers/power supply section.

There will be two amplifier sections in the system. One for the stereo speakers and the other for the sub woofer.

You have not mentioned whether the speakers alone works, if you connect them via the sub woofer (What i mean is - the speakers work alone, while the sub woofer only not working). If the speakers work mean, then the problem is either in sub woofer's amplifier section or faulty bass speaker.

If both the two speakers and sub woofer not working, the fault may be in power supply section.

Also please check the input sockets of JPL for 'Loose contact'. In any case please contact a service engineer - if you can't solve the problem.

Can you use Ipod docs and stereo speaker systems for Sansa MP3 players?

metallic m

Everywhere you look, all you see is Ipod stuff and very little stuff for Sansa, i.e. a speaker system for the player. When you look at the connections, they look identical but it says made for Ipod. One speaker system was good for Phillips and Ipod but no mention of Sansa. Anyone know the low down on these products and their interchangability of lack thereof? Want a doc and speakers for a Sansa player but would like to have a little variety to choose from.
Thanks in advance.

Answer
You are right, as far as the Sansa Sandisk mp3 players go, there hardly is any accessories made for this brand. I don't think that they are like the typical apple ipods, that are interchangeable with different brands. Here is some stuff I found for the sansa mp3 players that maybe can help you out. Also, if you check out ebay there might be some stuff on there. Make sure before buying any kind of accessories that you would be able to use them with that particular type of mp3 player.

Speakers not working?

Avani

I just got the new computer hooked up, it's a Windows Vista. And I have a problem with the speakers. No sound comes out, even when I turn them on and fool around with the volume. I am sure I have them connected to the right places. The speakers are something called acer. There are two speakers connected with a wire to eachother then only off ONE speaker there are two more wires coming out. One that hooks into the computer and the other one is supposed to be a USB. I don't know what to do. And please don't just say 'you shouldn't have bought a windows vista' or something stupid like that.

Answer
Double click on the speaker icon in the Systems Tray (bottom left of your screen), make sure everything is unchecked and the sliding bars for volume are up. No speaker icon.? Click on Start, choose Control Panel, then Sound/Audio Devices, click on Advanced and do the same. Still no sound? Plug a pair of headsets into the computer where the speakers go. If you hear sound in the headsets, it's your speakers, if not then it could be your sound card. Chow

Vista sound system?

Wake H

My Vista sound system was working fine for a while but then one day it stopped working, its wired fine and its not muted. However the interesting thing is that there is no X's anywhere on the device manager. Thank you in advance.
Well i know my speakers are powered because they make this beep noise when i restore defaults. I'll try reinstallation next

Answer
Try and plug in a different set of speakers. If that dosn't work, download the drivers for your audio card and reinstall them.

Personally, not seeing any issues in the device manager for your audio card makes me believe that you have an issue with your speakers. Are the powered, maybe the power cord accidentally removed?

Record player + speakers?

denis

Ok, so I want to buy a record player to play LP, basically because I love the format, but also because I want to try the difference in the sound quality between LPs and CDs, which a conventional record player with built-in speakers will not do.
So I'm looking to buy a set of speakers to connect to the record player, however, there are so many different settings and different brands, I'm confused.
I'm no audio professional in any way, just a guy who praises the good sounding quality of music, and all I want is to be able to listen to LPs, as well as CDs, and MP3 players all into the same system. Now, does anyone know if there actually EXISTS a good system that will play all those different formats and sound GOOD? Or do I really have to buy separate items, such as record player + cd player receiver + speakers? (Also, please note I'm not RICH, so I'm not looking into the finest quality in the world, or the best of the best, just something GOOD, that sounds good, and allows me to listen to different formats)

I need opinions!

I was researching and came across these three models but also don't know if they're compatible/good...
Record player: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00005T3XH/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

And a receiver (for CD playing): http://www.amazon.com/TEAC-CD-P1260-Player-LCD-Playback/dp/B000GU8B28/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1330829441&sr=8-1

I appreciate any opinion/answer.
Thank you very much

Answer
your looking at turntables, speakers and a cd player have you thought about a AV RECEIVER to connect everything up to and power them, the turntable does NOT have built in amp and neither does the cd player or speakers so how will you connect everything up with out an amp/receiver

with a $75 turntable you will notice that a cd player will have better sound,, its when you spend over $1000 on a turntable thats when you notice that the turntable will have better sound than cd player

vinyl/record players?

*MRS>TOM B

I have vinyl, yet no player. I want a really good player with speakers already attached. I have seen great turntables, but they dont have speakers.

a little help please??

Answer
What you're looking for is a record player... or some kind of all-in-one stereo system. A turntable is just a source that needs to be hooked up to an amp and speakers.

That Vestax thing doesn't look like it would sound so great. Very small amp and speaker... not even stereo... Really, the only record players I see being sold these days are those Crosley units... or what looks to be the same thing under several other brand names. There are very mixed reviews on these with many complaints about the speed being a little fast and things starting to break very quickly.

I would probably look at buying a vintage all-in-one system on eBay or Craigslist or something. They usually come with a main unit having a turntable and radio tuner... maybe a tape deck... and the speakers are separate. Sometimes the seller doesn't have the speakers. You could buy some Sony bookshelf speakers or something similar for not too much money... Some even have an input jack so you could add a CD player if you wanted. I'm usually not a big fan of vintage gear unless you're willing to spend some money on having it gone over and restored. Nothing lasts forever without maintenance. But, in this case, I think one of these older units would probably last longer and sound better than one of the Crosley units without any work being done and for about the same money or even less.

Here are some examples of the kind of stuff I'd be looking at...

http://cgi.ebay.com/QUASAR-Integrated-Audio-Music-System_W0QQitemZ200431445084QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item2eaaa5245c

http://cgi.ebay.com/AM-FM-CASSETTE-TURNTABLE-COMBO-STEREO-SANYO-GXT-1002KC_W0QQitemZ300391327963QQcmdZViewItemQQptZReceivers_Tuners?hash=item45f0b7e8db

http://cgi.ebay.com/CALIFONE-1155C-PORTABLE-RECORD-PLAYER-4-SPEEDS-SPEAKERS_W0QQitemZ140377116378QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item20af20ceda

This thing (URL below) is KILLER, but it really should be gone over. All the capacitors should probably be replaced and the tubes replaced with new old stock. These things are not usually performing to their full potential until recapped... and parts not performing to spec could cause damage to other parts that would be impossible to replace. Guy says it works though...

http://cgi.ebay.com/MOTOROLA-Tube-Stereo-Hi-Fi-Record-Player-SH12S-RESTORE_W0QQitemZ250569257260QQcmdZViewItemQQptZVintage_Electronics_R2?hash=item3a5717712c

IMO, it would be worth it to have someone recapp and retube this. You'd have a real conversation piece that might even be valuable someday if kept in working condition. These old tube record players usually sound pretty cool and pack a bit of a wallop too.

Good car speaker systems?

durnt

I recently just purchased an Alpine deck, and now im looking to get some new speakers for my car. I dont know a lot about speaker systems, and I was wondering what you would all recommend. Im hoping to spend under 300$ for equipment, but if a little extra gets me a substantial boost in quality ill consider it.

Answer
Speakers ae very subjective, and of personal preference, i may like something that you hate and visa versa. i would recommend going to a good car audio shop and take a listen, take a favorite cd, and test drive the speakers. for 300 you should be able to get some decent speakers all around. once you find a brand model you like, you could then shop online to find the best deal, woofers etc, is one place that has great values. you could also look at Crutchfield, they supply great directions and free harnesses for your vehical, so do it yourself is real easy when buying from them. I would stay away from best buy and the likes, typically thier stuff is overpirced for what it is.
since you asked for brand i feel obligated to through out a few names for you, but i still urge you to take a listen before you buy.

Boston acoustic
Diamond Audio
image dynamics
MB quart

These are names that are less mainstream, but i assure you they are serious about car audio. Also keep in mind that round speakers typically distort less and sound cleaner that the same series in a oval shape, however ovals can produce more bass in tight areas.

Hope that helps, and good luck.

Speaker system??????????????????

I am looking to create a killer sound system for my computer setup, but the problem is I have no clue what I should use⦠I don't want to spend over $200 but I rather spend just $150. I was thinking of getting two sony SS-B1000, but what amp should i get to power them? Is there any other speakers you would recommend to me? I am looking at only spending like $50 on the amp, but If i have to spend more what everâ¦

Answer
That's a pretty small budget for a "killer sound system". Especially if you are going to try to piece it together yourself. Component systems are typically better, but are more expensive.

As one person has pointed out, the Klipsch pro-media system is really nice. I had a set of them years ago before I built my component system.

I would also highly recommend keeping you eyes open for some nice used speakers on craigslist or ebay. Sony doesn't really make very good speakers. About a year ago I bought a pair of Mirage M290is speakers for about $110 after shipping. As for sound quality, they will blow away anything Sony has ever built.

Best speaker system.?

Howard Pro

Hi, im planing on getting a speaker system for my computer. i want the best speakers possible for gaming, movies and most importantly music. im trying to spend only $300-$500.

Answer
The best speakers for movies are rarely ever the best speakers for music, and vice versa. You see, the best speaker systems for movies and games are surround sound, while the best speakers for music are stereo. So you need to decide which is more important to you.

Since surround sound works very well with games and movies (2 out of 3 aint bad), I will recommend a nice surround sound system.

Will my gaming and movies sound better? what kind should i buy? Also im not trying to spend hundreds of dollars. Lastly its for my bedroom so its not like they got to be extremely loud. Just want something nice for movies gaming music.

Do a lil research....ive found multiple items just like this for about the same price....

Answer
The speakers your looking at require an amplifier or receiver in order to work they have no power, you could also get powered speakers not too many powered speakers that are tower and under $200 though your best bet would be to get the Polks or take a look at Fluance speakers and an inexpensive receiver like the Sherwood RX 4105...

Trying to understand what a 3-2-1 speaker system and what it is?

Mr. Basket

I have a small room but I want some good quality sound from my speakers currently I own a set of 2 Bose ceiling speakers that up till now I thought they where great. I have your average stereo hooked up to my Bose speakers and I have an HDTV and a PS3. So I recently took a Home Theater test to find out what would go right in my situation so, it said I should get a 3-2-1 speaker system and in the picture it shows to small speakers and a sub-woofer. So my question is since I already have 2 good speakers do I just have to get a sub-woofer? Or would it be better to buy a set with all the speakers being the same brand?

Answer
Ideally surround sound should be done with speakers from the same family (to help ensure "timbre matching"), but it isn't essential.

Bose are renowned as speakers for the gullible ... expensive and mediocre performers. You can do a lot better for the same (or less) money.

For a true surround system you want at least 5 main speakers (front left and right, front center, side/rear left and right). If they are full frequency (particularly the front speakers) .. meaning good low frequency response ... you don't need a subwoofer. If they are fairly small speakers they probably don't have great bass response and a sub would be beneficial.

See the link for some well-rated possibilities.

If you don't have room for free standing speakers you can use in-wall or in-ceiling models, or even a "sound bar" that provides a pseudo surround sound (On the latter, see the link on the left side of the main page from the link below).

Cheap Digital projector and speaker system?

I am looking for a well made and great Digital Projector and a multimedia speaker system to get great sound but Not wanting to pay the high price tag. Does anyone know of a cheap but gooood Projector thts digital that I can hook up my i mac computer and or a dvd player to to play movies projected onto a wall? and it has to be under 500 bucks.. how about a speaker system.. taht has to aslo be under 300 bucks. THANKS!

Answer
The least expensive factory refurbished 480i DLP projector sells for around $560 at amazon.com. It's the Infocus SP4805 that has a contrast level of 2000:1, a 4X color wheel to lessen seeing "rainbows," and has a built-in Faroudja deinterlacer to process all types of video and game imputs to remove jaggies. A replacement bulb costs $343 and lasts about 3,000 hours when the projector is set to the "econ" mode. The bulb will lasts just over 4 years when the projector is operated at 2 hours per day. And the cost per hour is around 0.12 cents. It also has a built-in hi-fi quality speaker. I highly recommend this projector because it's a best buy.

Here's an actual "92 inch diagonal projected image of a scene from the movie "A Good Woman," via the Infocus SP4805 onto a painted wall some 15 feet away. The screen is a paint on screen from goosystems.com for about $150.00 and the projector sits on top of a coffee table. The room light is not completely dark, but semilit with a single corner reading lamp.

What do you think the best 7.1 sound system for under $3000?

bebop

I'm going to be using a Denon 3311ci receiver. wonder what r some good options to go with...

Answer
You're starting off with a great receiver, and from that I can see you know more about this than most.

The brands I would recommend are Bowers & Wilkins, Paradigm, Klipsch, Definitive Technology, Focal, and Energy.

In your budget I would say Paradigm, their Monitor series in particular, offers the most bang for your buck, with Def Tech a close second. B&W is very good for extremely high end, so if you were willing to spend at least $6,000, or ideally $10000+, they are really second to none. Klipsch also has great high end speakers, such as their Palladium series, but I'm less thrilled about their offerings in your price range, however they are still very good. Focal makes very attractive looking speakers, but I think other companies sound better for the money, although they are still very good. Energy's are not as expensive as the other companies, but they don't go as high end either.

I would recommend spending about $1000 on the sub, and $2000 on the rest of the speakers.

For the fronts I would choose one of these options, depending on whether you want floor standing speakers or bookshelves:
http://www.paradigm.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=136&Itemid=2
http://www.paradigm.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=129&Itemid=2

For the center:
http://www.paradigm.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=132&Itemid=2

The surrounds:
http://www.paradigm.com/index.php?option=com_mtree&task=listcats&cat_id=135&Itemid=2

And for the rears, choose either one of the bookshelves or the surrounds.

And last but not least, the sub:
http://www.paradigm.com/products/paradigm/subwoofer

There are many combinations from what I just suggested. For ex, if you get top of the line floor standing fronts you may have to get rears or surrounds that are lower in the range to stay under budget. You're dropping a good amount of money on this system so you don't want to be disappointed. I would use Paradigm's dealer locator to find one near you (as long as you live near a big city it won't be a problem). Then you can hear these speakers (and likely several other brands side by side) for yourself. Then you can pick out the components individually to what best suits your taste and be sure you're making an educated purchase.

Questions about a multizone speaker system?

gummyd

ust bought a house, but I'm an electronics noob
Has previously built in speaker system on first floor:
7 ceiling speaker units with 2 speakers in each unit (14 total speakers) - I'm assuming this since there are 7 wire bundles with 4 individual speaker wires in each bundle - am I correct to assume that these are 2 speakers in each speaker unit then?
Left-Center-Right entertainment center wall speakers (3 total speakers) - Assuming this because there are 3 wire bundles with 2 individual speaker wires in each bundle - however I don't really know what's going on here. I thought 2 speaker wires meant left-right. Are both of my left and right positioned speakers left-right channel then? Or are they dedicated left and dedicated right?
Left-Back-Right "surround" ceiling speakers (3 total speakers) - Again, 3 wire bundles with 2 speaker wires in each bundle. These wires are marked "surround" - do I need to do anything special with them?

Volume controls in each room already built in

In one place there are a lot of speaker wires (16awg I think, whatever this means)
I have no clue how to install a music box playing system but I want to ... and would like to be able to play only CDs and maybe wirelessly playing music from a desktop computer and if at all possible, already have an interface where you can insert an SD card or USB drive or portable hard drive or something and you can play music from there already without the hassle of a computer...

How can I accomplish this?
I've heard about these multi-zone multi-room receivers or something, but I don't know how to use how to buy how to install?
I only see speaker wires with 1-inch strip off copper ends, how will this be able to plug into a receiver? And I have so many speakers, are there any multi-something receivers that can accept so many speakers? Any recommendations for receivers with the basic functions I listed? I don't need volume control on the receiver since volume control is already installed for the speakers. My budget is $3000 but I'd like to do it under $1500. Thank you.

Answer
If you want different music in each room at the same time, that will drive the cost way up. For that, you would need a multi zone amp.

If you just want to have the same music in all the rooms from one source, that is pretty easy. All you would need for that is a simple stereo receiver and a speaker switch:

Help making a Speaker system?

No

I want to make a speaker system with 2 15" drivers at least. I would like the smallest cabinet size and the recommended high frequency and mid range driver numbers (how many of them and what size) thanks.

Answer
Speaker building is a fun hobby but it can take years to get really good at it. There are books http://www.parts-express.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?Partnumber=500-035 on the subject and lots of web sites and forums. Start with the AVS Forum here... http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=155 You can see what projects others are doing there and get lots of help.

Linkwitzlab has lots of DIY projects... http://www.linkwitzlab.com/DIY%20products.htm and just a lot of good information... http://www.linkwitzlab.com/frontiers.htm

You can get ideas from the Parts Express showcase... http://www.parts-express.com/project%2Dgallery/speaker%2Dprojects/

If you get good at it, you can make better speakers than most of the products available to buy. Manufacturers have too many limitations whereas DIY is only limited by resources. You can read every article ever written in the Journals of the Audio Engineering Society and utilize every known technology in your design. Manufacturers can not do this without paying royalties.

have fun,

Can someone explain speaker systems to me?

jl_0517

I'm interested in purchasing a speaker system (preferably 4.1 or 5.1). Can someone explain to me what exactly what makes a good speaker system? I looked at some high end speakers and low end speakers and what sticks out to me the most is watts. Can someone give me a detailed explanation of all the ins-and-outs about speakers? Things like RMS, total watts peak power, the different length drivers, satellites, etc.. Best answer goes to the most explanatory and helpful! Also showing me some deals would also be helpful. No need to explain sound cards to me though. Thanks! :]

Answer
Power ratings tell you absolutely nothing about a speaker system's sound quality. Besides, most big-name retailers sell systems with inflated or flat-out dishonest power ratings anyway.
But, since you asked, I'll tell you what the terms mean.

Power is how much power (electricity) a speaker system can handle without being damaged (and contrary to what xxxnullifierxxx said, power ratings actually rate how much power it can have sent INTO it, not how much power it puts out). RMS power is how much power it can handle continuously, and peak power is the absolute maximum amount it can take, even if for a short amount of time.

Now about the different types of speaker systems. There are 3 different types of speakers you will hear about: subwoofer + satellite, bookshelf speakers, and floorstanding speakers.

Subwoofer + satellite speakers are composed of 1 big speaker for bass (the subwoofer) and smaller speakers for midrange and treble. Advantages: take up less space. Disadvantages: sound quality often suffers, since many of speaker manufacturers try to make their satellite speakers as small as possible (more about this later).

Bookshelf speakers: speakers where all the sound (bass, treble, etc) come from 1 speaker rather than a satellite and a subwoofer. This design is advantageous because the sound quality is often better than subwoofer + satellite designs. So, instead of having 1 subwoofer and 2, 5, 6, or 7 satellites (depending on whether you have stereo or surround sound) you just have 2, 5, 6, or 7 bookshelf speakers. These bookshelf speakers can range from about 1ft x 0.5ft x 0.5ft to about 3ft x 1.5ft x 1ft.

Lastly, we have floorstanding speakers, which are similar to bookshelf speakers except each speaker is bigger---big enough to stand by itself on the floor, hence the name.

Now to talk about drivers and crossover frequencies. The driver is the part of the speaker that actually produces the sound waves (tweeters, woofers, etc). Generally, the larger the diameter of the driver (and generally, drivers are circular, though there are some exceptions--some woofers are square, for example), then the lower the frequencies (pitch) it can produce. For example, a driver with a diameter of 3 inches generally can't produce frequencies below about 200 to 250 Hz. This is where the problem lies with many subwoofer + satellite systems: many manufacturers are trying to make their satellites smaller and smaller and thus they can't produce the lower frequencies as well. So now, you will hear a gap between the bass that the subwoofer produces and the higher frequencies the satellites are producing. Some speaker systems try to compromise for this by making their subwoofers produce both bass and some higher frequencies also, but this introduces another problem into the sound: these slightly higher frequencies are more directional than the bass. So, if the subwoofer produces only bass, you can place it in various spots in the room (in front of you, behind you, etc) and hear no difference. However, if the subwoofer produces bass and some higher frequencies too, then you can hear a difference in sound depending on where the subwoofer is located. In fact, this problem has become quite widespread: a few manufacturers are actually trying to make satellite speakers using multiple tiny 1" speakers (THOSE SPEAKERS SOUND HORRIBLE!!!!). For example, many subwoofers sold in commercial stores (Sears, Walmart, etc) actually produce so many of the higher frequencies that, if you were to disconnect the satellite speakers, you could still hear all the voices in a movie or TV show; that is, you could still follow the dialogue with the satellites unplugged. This is quite inconvenient, since originally these systems were designed to allow you to have only small speakers in sight and allow you to stash the big subwoofer almost anywhere without affecting sound quality.

Bookshelf speakers, meanwhile, usually have (depending on the model) either 2 or 3 drivers inside. Unlike the subwoofer + satellite design, however, each speaker is intended to be treated sort of like a satellite speaker (meaning that you place it to the left or right of you instead of just placing it out of sight like the subwoofer). Thus, the directionality thing is not an issue.

Floorstanding speakers work basically like bookshelf speakers, except they are larger and taller usually.

Lastly, there are some other things to keep in mind when buying a speaker system:

~ Sturdy cabinets/enclosures (the things that house the drivers). Heavy, thick wood (MDF, HDF, plywood, etc) is a good thing. Plastic, especially thin plastic, is a bad thing. You see, as the drivers produce sound waves, they produce them both in your direction and they also produce them inside the speaker's enclosure. If you have a flimsy plastic enclosure, the vibrations produced inside the enclosure will make the speakers' cabinets vibrate too, thus adding extra, unwanted sound waves. By the way, most computer speaker systems and most home-theater-in-a-box systems you see at major retail stores are very poor in this category: thin, flimsy plastic for the satellites and thin 3/8-inch particleboard for the subwoofer. Many floorstanding or bookshelf speakers sold in major retail stores also use the poor-quality 3/8" particleboard for speaker cabinets.

~ Distortion. Thanks to the laws of physics, speakers can't produce the sound waves exactly as they are supposed to be produced. Even the highest quality speaker systems in the planet introduce a few extra artifacts into the sound that weren't supposed to be there and still can't produce every single little sound in the sound recording. There is a way to measure how much the speaker changes, or distorts, the sound when it produces it, and this is called THD (total harmonic distortion). There are some other measurements as well, but I don't know much about them (plus you don't need to worry about them) so we'll stick to the basics. THD is expressed in percentages. Aim for less than 1% when buying a speaker system; any more and the added imperfections in the sound they produce will become quite obvious. Here is where many speaker systems deceive you: as you force them to take more and more power, thus forcing them to play louder, they add more distortion to the sound. Right now, many of the systems sold at major stores base their power ratings on 10% THD, meaning that if they are rated for 1000 watts, they will really be producing 10% THD at that power level (that is A LOT of added imperfections in the sound and it will sound atrocious). If you were to measure how much power they could handle while still playing with a reasonable amount of THD, the power ratings would be much lower. Additionally (and here is yet another reason why power ratings are meaningless) many manufacturers measure these ratings in more deceitful ways than just the THD issue. Many systems nowadays come with a built in power supply that can only supply a certain amount of power to the speakers. If you have a surround sound system, that limited amount of power may have to be divided up into 7 or more speakers. Now, in the real world, if you are using your surround sound system to watch a movie, you're probably going to have sound playing out of all 5 speakers at once: some dialogue in the front speakers and some background sound effects in the back speakers, for example. However, many manufacturers calculate their power ratings when only ONE speaker is playing at once, meaning that the system's power supply does not have to divide its efforts up between 5 to 8 different speakers. Then the manufacturer multiplies that number by the number of speakers, thus achieving an extremely unrealistic power rating. Additionally, if you want to play your speakers loud (I know a lot of people do--and unfortunately, volume seems to be the only thing people care about nowadays) then power rating tells you nothing about the volume levels the speakers can produce. Some speakers are very efficient and can put out over 100 decibels (dB) of sound, easily enough to cause permanent hearing damage, when fed less than 10 watts of power; other, less efficient speakers can't produce that volume level when being fed 100 watts of power. And lastly, neither power ratings nor volume are an accurate way to judge how high-quality a speaker is or how good it sounds. There are some speakers, both high wattage and low wattage, that will sound bad at any volume, and some speakers, both high and low wattage, that will sound good at any reasonable volume (meaning any volume that isn't absurdly high). So there's really no way to judge whether a system will meet your needs based on its power rating.

And lastly, to warn you against that idiot xxxnullifierxxx--the Logitech system he references is not a driver free system. Drivers, remember, are the actual components that produce the sound waves. So a driver free system would not produce any sound. And trust me, that system is not high-end. It's a computer speaker system, the satellites' enclosures are made of flimsy plastic, and I have never met any computer systems (Logitech or otherwise) who use sturdy materials for the subwoofer enclosure.

Sorry, I think I explained some topics better than others, but you get the general idea.

Home Theater System - Speaker Companies...?

Pro90

Have you heard of Pure-Acoustics or Alpha Technology...? I'm planning on buying a five-speaker set for my home...are any of these two compnies good? Thanks!

Answer
Pure Acoustics makes a great product, however some feel they are a little lacking in the mid range. Have you listened to any of these? You need to audition them with the amp you intend to use.

Alpha I have not heard, but again listen to them first.

Help me pick out a speaker system?

angelsanda

I really want to buy a nice speaker system...with a reciever???

I love music, its my life...I WANT IT LOUD AND REALLY CLEAR. i need it to be able to be loud as all loud can be because when i play guitar...the louder the better.

I am looking to spend around 200 to 450 on it. Main use is for music.

Answer
For that price I would have to recommend this speaker system from Energy. Now I know you probably have never heard of the speaker company Energy but they are actually fairly well known in home audio circles. This system is one of the Canadian companies best known systems. Its not very expensive or large but has great sound for the size and price. You will not be disappointed with it at all.

How To Make My Hi-Fi Speakers Work With mp3 Player?

Tom

I've had a Hi-Fi set for a few years which I barely ever use (it has a tape player and a cd player). Apart fromt the tape and cd player there is a box (which I suspect is an amp???) that is connected to both of these by what looks like a data wire in a computer. So anyway, the speakers are just speakers which have wires coming out of the back of them which have metal (copper) ends to plug into the system. So I'm wondering how do I make it so that I can use this with a 3.5mm jack to plug my mp3 player into it. What I suspect to be an amp says--- DENON UDRA-70 on the front whilst the speakers are the brand 'mission'
Thanks - 10 points for the best answer :) .

Answer
There may be an Auxilliary in plug in the back of the Hi-fi-. If the Hi Fi set does not have an Aux. in, you should be able to get an adapter to plug your mp3 in where your cd or tape player goes to the amp. For most stereos the adapter you need is a 1/4" earphone jack to RCA. Would have to see the stereo to be sure.

are these amplifier, speakers and lp player compatible?

lp player: Denon DP-29F
amplifier: Pioneer A-109
speakers: Canton GLE 402
and if so, will it be good quality?

Answer
The amp and speakers look like a nice little system. That turntable is basically a toy though and the Canton speakers would certainly reveal that.

Honestly, unless you have at least a few hundred dollars to spend on vinyl playback, just stick with a CD player and it will sound much better. Vinyl is not worth doing unless you do it right. A table like that won't even play at the right speed for long. You'll have audible wow and flutter. You'll also have tracking distortion and "thick", grainy sound with a limited frequency range and limited transparency due to the cheap cartridge and stylus.

vinyl/record players?

These old tube record players usually sound pretty cool and pack a bit of a wallop too.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P1D7O0/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?ie=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Answer
I'm going to have to say the Cyber Acoustics. Their page doesn't really have enough technical info to make a fair comparison. But it does have the Cyber Acoustic at full retail of 55 bucks on sale for $18 less. "you get what you pay for" comes into play here. It looks like Cyber is a pound heavier, and the satellite speakers are 2", not "micro drivers". A larger diameter driver easily gives you more sound with less effort. I think it looks better, too. But we don't know the wattage rating of Cyber. A pound more, retail $55 vs. $28, larger diameter drivers in the satellite. Cyber Acoustics. Oh yeah, and a higher star rating, too!

Best surround sound with mp3 player compatibility?

superstace

I have a smaller living room but i would like at least two speakers and a subwoofer. I have a samsung focus phone and need the surround sound to have a 3.5m jack so I can use my music off my phone through the surround sound. Please let me know the most reasonably priced one out there!!! I'm on a very tight budget.
I would like a legitimate home theater/surround sound system. I want to be able to hook my tv up to it or hook my mp3 player up to it so listen to music.

Answer
Well this one is good and very cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/Coby-CS-MP77-75-Watt-Performance-Speaker/dp/B000P1D7O0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1311870908&sr=8-1
You would also need 2 of these aux cables, which are incredibly cheap:
http://www.amazon.com/Cables-Unlimited-AUD-1100-06-6-Feet-Stereo/dp/B000SE6IV8/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1311871217&sr=1-1

But that one isnt really "surround sound". Do you want surround sound or do you just want speakers?

http://www.amazon.com/RCA-RT151-Home-Theater-System/dp/B002PY7H3M/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1311871739&sr=1-1

I know these above would work, but they are not very high watts

This one below is pretty high watts but I did a lot of research for you and found that they aren't "truly" surround sound unless you have a receiver. That owuld cost you about another 100 bucks. So i would reccomend the last one. its 300 watts, compared to 80 from the one above it.

Could i use an old speaker system in my car?

Day

I have an old set of speakers that are about 6" from an old hi fi which were pretty good speakers, and i was wondering whether i could either use them in my car as actual speakers (obviously change the connectors) or whether i could box them and turn them into a sort of sealed bass box?
Sorry if it sounds stupid, but i'm a bit of a noob when it comes to speakers an electronics, so any extra help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Answer
yes although they wont last as long as car speakers they will work

car speaker system help?

Q. i have no clue what to put in i want alot of bass so i can be heard coming down the street but not so much that i cant hear the song and im willing to spend around 150-200 smackaroos

Answer
You won't really get large bass from speakers, b/c the woofer itself is not large enough to reproduce the low frequency end of the system. You can get decent bass with Kicker or Alpine, but you'll want to get a sub or two if you want a full-spectrum system.

In car audio, you get what you pay for. If you buy a crappy Boss stereo instead of an Alpine or Pioneer stereo, you'll probably be sending the Boss stereo in for warranty issues.

Brands that are good for the following categories are:

Amp: Top 5: Rockford Fosgate, Hifonics, Alpine, Kicker, Infinity.
Honorable Mentions: Kicker, Polk Audio, Boston Acoustics, Pioneer.

Speaker: Top 5: Focal, Rockford Fosgate, Kicker, Infinity, Alpine.
Honorable Mentions: Boston Acoustics, Kenwood, Hifonics, Polk Audio, JL.

Subwoofer: Top 5: Fi, Alpine, Kicker, Rockford Fosgate, Pioneer Premier.
Honorable Mentions: Hifonics, Infinity, Kenwood, Pioneer (Basic Pioneer).

OEM Processors: Rockford Fosgate 360.2 Processor
On a Budget: Hifonics Processors.

Wire: Kicker and Rockford Fosgate.
Also, stick with name brand companies that follow the AWG system.

Head Unit: Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood.

The only place I recommend to buy any of these products are Crutchfield.com and the actual company's homepage that makes the products so you can get your warranty with the product.

When you upgrade anything in your system, it's best to upgrade everything, because every component will compliment each other to make the best sounding system.

--------------------------------------â¦

A rule of thumb when designing a custom system is that when you add (a) subwoofer(s) you need to follow the following formula when going for SQ (Sound Quality) instead of SPL (Sound Pressure Level): Total RMS (Root Mean Squared OR Constant Wattage) of all speakers should be double to figure the RMS that the subs should be. i.e. If you have a 4-speaker system that has 50w RMS per speaker, then you'd 50 x 4 giving you 200. Then take 200 x 2 which gives you 400. That means that your system should have a subwoofer(s) with 400w RMS.

If you need any help just e-mail if you need help!!!
You can do all this on your own. I can give you links to diagrams that I've made to help you install your system and if you order from Crutchfield.com (which I highly recommend) they'll send you a Master Sheet with everything on it.

If you go to Crutchfield.com you can click on "Outfit My Car" and enter your car's info, then Crutchfield will show you all the products that will fit/work with your car.
Good luck!

What are Good speakers for iPad and iPhone?

JLG

I want good speakers I can play my music and iheart radio on. I have a iPad and iPhone I will probably use my iPad more because it has more space on it for my music. Do you know of any good high quality speakers for Less that 100$. Thanks

Answer
I have been using the iMainGo XP for iPad and love it! There is also the iMainGo X and iMainGo 2, which are for iPod/iPhone/iTouch, etc. All of them are a solid speaker system with big sound, and protect your device. I love the duality of having a case that is also a speaker system. I work with them and their products are pretty impressive out of all the speaker systems I've used. The speakers are versatile and work with many other products, including Kindle, notebooks and portable gaming devices (you can even plug in a guitar!).

Check it out on Amazon: http://amzn.to/ritvtj (where you can also read the reviews).

GOOD LUCK!

How do I wire my iPad Mini into my car?

Corbett

I plan on replacing my current stereo system with an iPad Mini. I understand the physical type aspect or removing the current deck and building housing for the iPad but as far as the electrical and audio wiring part goes I'm lost. Once I have a housing for the iPad in the dash what all do i need to convert that signal to play through my speakers. I currently have a cord for my iphone hardwired into the car but I think it goes through the current system with i plan to remove and replace with the iPad. If you at least know what i need as far as an adapter, amp, etc and not necessarily how to do it let me know! also if you know of a guide posted online anywhere tell me! thank you.

Answer
well all you would need is some rca cables that go to a female port, and an Auxillary cord for the ipad mini.

Logitech speaker system x 530?

Sarisa G

Having trouble on an older computer trying to get the middle speaker to work... all the others work just fine. Anyone have any ideas why all speakers including sub work except the one middle speaker.

Answer
I also have a logitech 5.1 speakerset, with a small control centre on my desk. I noticed also, that my middle speaker did not work and thought that there was something wrong.
There are different ways of listening to music with your speaker set.
Mine has several options.\
Stereo x 2 ( middle speaker out)
Stero (middle speaker out)
6 Ch Direct ( centre speaker out )
Dolby PLII Movie ( now middle speaker is also working)
Dolby PLII Music ( middle speaker is now also on )
Try it out, you will see, that there is nothing wrong with your middle speaker. When I just bougt the speakers I felt the same as you did. Spend a lot of money on a speaker set and one is not working.
Some people prefer to listen with Stereo x 2 . I did to for a while, but now I listen Dolby PLII music. I find it more realistic.

Not just for computers - improves cheap TVs, July 7, 2008
By Arthur Kimes (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I recenty got a inexpensive 19" HDTV which has decent enough video quality but it burdened with the WORST sound I've heard on a TV. Tinny sounding speakers with little volume. But there was a headphone jack on the TV. With headphones, the TV sounded excellent. My computer speakers were connected with a headphone jack... They worked just fine on the TV. I looked for powered 2.1 computer speaker systems on Amazon and was delighted to find many choices under $40. The best value for the money seemed to be this Logitech and the cheap TV now has excellent sound.

I give this a 5 star rating (instead of a 3 or a 4) because of the low price. There are better 2.1 systems but nowhere near this price.

Great sound with a nice touch of base. All the quality in a small package. The speaker wires are really not long enough for distant placement of speakers the wire doesn't spread that far apart. The sub woofer does well it packs a punch when cranked up. The piano black color adds nice touch to the speakers and woofer which is kind of heavy but slim enough to fit just about anywhere. The volume control and mic/phone jack controls are easy to use and a big plus for me. Easy gliding volume control the whole system feels solid with no visible weaknesses. Over all a good speaker system for the money. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

Which speaker system do you suggest?

aatman

hello

I'm constructing a new house and i'm looking for audio solutions. i have always trusted bose but the internet belives something different.

which brand do you think is the best for home audio solutions. i was thinking of getting a 5.1 system plugged into an a/v receiver. or a 5.0 system with a different subwoofer.

thanks in advance
is bowers and wilkins any good?
thanks for the response ricky but i was looking for an unconventional brand.

Answer
- Bose speakers are crap.

- Active speakers have built in amplifiers in the speakers (and/or built in amplifier in the subwoofer and the speakers plug into the subwoofer). Examples of active speakers would be computer speakers or sound bars.
- Most active speaker systems have very little power and low end quality and no additional features other than producing audio. = Garbage (I don't recommend computer speakers or sound bar speakers).

- Blu-ray or DVD home theaters in a box is a disc player (amplifier) that comes with and hooks up to compatible passive speakers with speaker wire.
- All HTIB systems have very little power and very low end quality and not much additional features other than producing audio. = Garbage (I don't recommend HTIB systems).

- What I do recommend are receivers (amplifiers) that hook up to compatible passive speakers with speaker wire, computers or blu-ray/dvd player or game consoles hook up to the receiver with a hdmi cable for audio then receiver hooks up to the tv with a hdmi cable for video. You can find good cheap speaker wire and hdmi cables at monoprice or amazon.
- If you notice below, brands that make good receivers do not make good speakers. = I don't recommend a system that bundles a receiver with speakers, but the Onkyo HT-(S3500 or S5500 or S6500 or S7500 .ect) system is not too bad. = So if your on a budget, then I recommend you get a low/high end 7.1/7.2 surround sound receiver and you get mid end or high end stereo speakers (you can get+add more speakers later to have a surround sound system).

Some examples of good 5.1 surround sound audio speakers.
- Low end bookshelf 5.1 speakers = Polk Audio 5.1 Blackstone TL(1600 or 1900 or 2600); Klipsch 5.1 HD Theater (300 or 500 or 600); Energy 5.1 (Take Classic or RC-Micro or CB-10); MonoPrice 5.1 Premium 10565; M&K Movie; JBL SCS 145.2 or JBL CS480.

Some examples of good 5.1/5.2 surround sound audio/video receivers. (Overall=low end).
- Low end = Onkyo HT-RC430 or Onkyo TX-SR313; Pioneer VSX-(522-K or 523-K); Denon AVR-(1513 or E200); Yamaha HTR-3066 or Yamaha RX-(V373 or V375);

Mounting ceiling speakers in a wall?

mark

I have a 7.1 surround sound receiver. I bought a 5.1 speaker set and am buying 2 additional speakers for the middle satellite speakers. I need in-wall speakers for logistic reasons. Most of the in-wall speakers are too big for the location I need but the round shape of the in-ceiling speakers would work.

Are there any issues with using in-ceiling speakers in a side-wall?

Answer
I did the same thing using a 9.1 system. Basically make sure of the depth of the wall. Some inner walls are not deep enough to accommodate the speaker. I used Polk, a little more expensive but the end result was satisfying considering that you don't want to be cutting into your drywall and running cable more than once.

Desktop CPU connected to my 56" LCD Projection tv, but it is playing sound off the TV speakers, not the system?

PlayinDaGa

I have a Home Theater System from Philips [HTS3555], I remembered buying a Monster Cable where it had one connection on one side and the other side had 2 connections. Does anyone have any directions or installation guides to connected the Sound cable to the Monster Cable? Some techs told me to connect the Monster Cable to the DVD player and then you can have the sound come out from the Sound system instead of just the TV speakers. Help please!

Answer
Ok there is a couple things you can check.

1. If you connect the CPU to the TV directly. Then you will need to run a cable from the TV(audio out port) to the Home Theater system (audio In Port).

2. Hook the video from the CPU to the TV directly and then hook the audio to the Home theater system. (You home theater system has an optical input so this is what you would use for audio input) So 1 cable for video to tv and 1 cable for audio to theater system.

NOTE: I'm not sure what your inputs and outputs you have on your TV and CPU.

Let me know if you need more assistance. I'll just need those details
GOOD LUCK

Speakers for Sylvania '19 LCD TV?

asucollege

Bought a Sylvania '19 LCD tv but the sound quality is crap. I tried to hook up some basic computer speakers but its a no go. I need suggestions for cheap easy solution to add speakers. Connections on the back of the tv include: pc input jack, HDMI input jack, antenna input jack, component video and audio jack, video input jack (RCA Video for external devices), audio input (RCA), audio input (rca audio for DVI), audio input for P.C, coxial digital cable output, s-video input.

So it seems the only output is the digital coax. does this mean I need special speakers that Accepts this and do these speakers actually exist. Again, this is a '19 tv for a bed room, I don't need a high powered speaker system!

Answer
>>need special speakers

No... you need a surround sound receiver and a pair of unamplified bookshelf loudspeakers. Just get some old cruddy unit off Craigslist, and pair up with small bookshelfs of decent pedigree. Use it as your bedroom stereo, too, by adding a CD player. Or, if you have cable or satellite, route the audio from your box to any cheap stereo with RCA inputs. Vintage boomboxes, most mini-systems, and all receivers should work for this. Perhaps overkill again, but definitely the cheapest and easiest way, as RCA inputs are ubiquitous as are cheap minisystems.

Best surround sound speaker system under $500.00 for music?

Krazed Log

Don't even bother answering unless you know your stuff. (must have strong bass)

Answer
Best sound =/= strong bass. Good quality speakers provide quality sound across all sound frequencies.

Further, you don't make clear what your source will be, so do you have an audio receiver, and, if so, what kind, stereo, 5.1 HT, or 7.1 HT ?

That's crucial, as suggestions will vary quite a bit, depending on which kind of speaker system you want.

There are many good quality speaker brands that have gear in your price range. Among them are Infinity, Polk, JBL and Klipsch.

Now, if you wanted a 5.1 speaker system, you could get the following Polk speakers at Newegg:

A pair of New Monitor 65Ts towers for $320.
A pair of New Monitor 40 Series 2s for $120.
A center CS1 Series 2 for $70
A PSW10 subwoofer for $100.

OK, that's $610. If you really can't go over $500, then substitute New Monitor 45Bs for $170 instead of the tower 65Ts. That takes the package price down to $460.

What is the best speaker system for under 700 USD, 500 pounds. Loud loud sub and loud loud clear speakers?

Mak

I really wanna know what kinda of sound system I could buy that would blow the roof off and yet still sound really good for under 500 British pounds (700 USD). I wanna connect it to my computer. I have heard of the Klipsch promedia 5.1 and Logitech z 5500 but wondering if i could buy something for non-computer use that can still be connected to the computer or buy a sub and speakers separately to make an awesome kit. I only have a small room

Answer
Home theater in a box systems are OK, but the build overall quality isn't that great.

Your best bet, would be to do some research, shop around, and build a theater system yourself. You will bet much better overall quality and you have the freedom of choice as far as parts go.

What you will need is:
-- 5.1 Receiver with your preference of audio connections (Optical, RCA, HMDI).
-- Front (left and right) channel speakers.
-- Center channel speaker.
-- Rear channel speakers.
-- Sub-woofer(s).
-- Cables/hook-ups.

It sounds like a daunting task, but it isn't as hard as it looks. It's a little time-consuming though. In the end, you will be much happier with the results.

Look at the reviews online for the products. They will really help you and inform you of problems with the products. Some stores even have home theater components on display to allow you to hear them.

I'm not too familiar with retailers and sites that will deliver to the UK, so I can't really help you on that part.

Good luck!

iPod speaker/docking systems?

Amber

Any suggestions? I have an iPod touch 3rd generation not that it matters considering you get different attachments/a universal docking station... anyways :P I need something that is:

-loud!
-CLEAR/crisp-a system that does not lose clarity with the max volume
-has a good range of pitch i.e. tweeters, mid rangers & decent bass (sub woofers etc.)

I know that's a lot to ask for for under around $200 and I know I'm not going to get a state of the art piece with that but I believe it's possible to get those features with the quality for that price range-thanks!! :)

Answer
You can find quality iPod speakers/docking systems online. Might want to check if iHome, Altec Lansing or Cyber Acoustics fits your preference.

what is the best choice for a dock /speaker system for an ipod touch?

fatsbolger

whenever i play my ipod touch on my ihome it sounds all fuzzy and my bday is coming up and i wanted to know what kind of speaker system i should ask for

Answer
If you've got an iPod touch. Then you need to get he Macally FlexTune dock ( http://www.thepoddepot.com/2008/03/31/macally-flextune-portable-stereo-system-and-charging-station-for-ipod-and-iphone/ ) . It allows you to dock your iPod normally and sideways!! So, you can actually watch your widescreen movie from your iPod touch while it charges on the dock. The sound is also pretty good.

I got new speakers and now I get no sound from my PC and my Mic is not working either?

M

I have a self-built computer and I use the on-board sound card of my Asus P8P67 Deluxe Motherboard. The speakers I got are the Logitech Z553 Speakers, and my Operating System is Windows 7 64bit Home Premium. I also have the Razer Carcharias Headphones, which I want to use for Gaming and communication (Skype, Teamspeak, etc.). I have updated all the drivers and tried many different ways to fix this problem, but now I don't know what to do.

Here's the set up I want to have: I want to have my new speakers to play all sound except for games and communication programs. To do this, I plugged it into the Front Speaker Output of my Motherboard, as instructed, and I plugged the Headset and Mic plug of my Headset into the Front Panel outputs (I've tried the back panel ones too, which I would prefer to use by the way, but they don't work either). I am getting absolutely no sound, no matter what I unplug, replug, etc. I've tried unplugging my microphone, my headset and even the speakers, and nothing seems to work. If I turn up my speakers to full volume, they make a quiet distortion noise. Also, if I plug the speakers into my phone and play music, they work perfectly, so the problem is with my computer.

Please help me someone. If you need more info, my email is mkilian96@gmail.com

Thanks in advance.
I forgot to mention, whenever I plug my mic in, my Realtek HD Audio Manager shows me that I have something plugged in to the Center/Subwoofer Plug as well, which I don't. Whenever I unplug my mic, that problem is fixed, but there's still no sound.
It also keeps "plugging and unplugging" this Center/Subwoofer plug, which is not actually plugged in the first place.

@Simon Yes I've checked if all drivers are up to date, which they are.
