Is there any way I can hook up a computer speaker system to my car?

My brother has a z5300 Logitech speaker system w/ a pretty good bass. I was wondering if there was any way that I could hook that up to my car.

Answer
Of course you can, it is not going to sound that good though, like a subwoofer with an amplifier powering it would. Just attach the speaker wire to the speaker input, then play the music. I highly recommend using normal car speakers though.

Would my car support this amp and speaker system?

cheyne rob

I have just acquired a 97 Plymouth neon. NOT DOGDE. I have a 500watt speaker system to add to my cars existing standard system. Would I need a new battery/alternator to support a 2200watt amp for these speakers? Should I try finding a smaller amp? Any help would be awesome.

Answer
Your car will handle it fine the way it is. There may be a little light dimming if the amp does what is says it does but more than likley it doesn't. Most amps don't. So your good the way you are.

I don't want it for just basics since I play games like minecraft, saints row, spore and I am planning on buying more. Also, I would not like to build one since I have no experience in that and I am 14. Thanks. Also, I am going to get Windows 7 and such.
I know what I want in a pc but not how to build one.

Answer
its good if you like paying for a machine that is over priced and is likely to have major hardware problems .

I can build a gaming Rig top of the range for £1500 and that would be a desktop tower.
You want a computer that can just do the basics.Don't fall into the trap of paying for something that is over priced and is of no use to you .

Is there some way of connecting a 5.1 surround sound speaker system to a USB port on my laptop?

I have a decent 5.1 speaker system for a PC. I no longer use the PC but use a laptop and do not want to buy a new speaker system if there is some device out there which will allow me to run the 5.1 . Yes I am aware that I will only receive sereo from the laptop.

Answer
Not that I'm aware of unless the laptop has a super sound card built in that has the drivers needed to support 5.1. You might want to post this in computer instead of home theater. Too many people think this is where all the geeks hang out, but that is not the case. Try computers.

Bose 5 Companion speaker system benefit from a creative sound card?

Q. Heya,
I just purchased a Bose 5 Companion speaker system, and I was wondering if adding a good quality sound card would enhance the overall sound quality....Even though the speakers connect to the computer via an USB cable. Thanks!

Answer
Yes, upgrading from the motherboard sound chipset to something like the Creative X-Fi audio would greatly improve sound quality. The X-Fi Gamer is even better for 5.1 speakers but costs about $30 more.

I don't think the USB interface matters- the audio sampling is handled by the soundcard before it's sent anywhere, and the creative cards make that signal much clearer.

I have a pioneer stereo unit, with sony gtsx 6.5 speakers in the front and 6x4s in the rear all connected to my 600 watt sony amplifier. I also have some 10 inch 1000 watt sony xplod subwoofers that are sitting in some custom made boxes underneath my bench seat in the back of my crew cab. They are also hooked up to the amp obviously.

I am not very satisfied with the sony speakers when I try to turn them up high they get distorted.
I have spent over $1000 total on my stereo system and I want to be satisfied with what I have.
I am thinking of replacing the sony's with some really nice alpine speakers is that a good idea?

Also is it ok to have 3 different audio brands in your stereo system? For example Pioneer stereo which I have, with alpine speakers which I want to get and Sony subwoofers which I have. Will it make any difference on how it sounds or does it matter.

Thanks for your advice.

Answer
I have a Dual head unit, SPL amp, sony x-plode door speakers, and a alpine type R in my 89 mustang and it sounds amazing. lol hope that helps. it doesnt matter if you have different brands, ive hooked up several systems with mixed brands turned out fine!

how big a speaker system I need for an indoor audience of 350 people?

Sal

There will be background music for a dinner party audience of 350 people. I plan to have two or four speakers. I am thinking of getting 1000 watt speaker.

Answer
You say back ground music so that means that everyone can still talk over the music easily.

For a dinner party setup your actually better off having many speakers spaced through out the dinner space and playing them at low levels.

With just a pair of speakers you will have to play at a fairly loud level so the people at the back can actually hear it, and then it may be to loud for the people close to the speakers.

Honestly if its low level listening you wont need that much power just a amplifier that is stable driving multiple speakers, especially if the speakers are fairly efficient.

I have a logitech z-2300 system. The right speaker died about two months ago. Im wondering if its possible to use different speakers with the system. The subwoofer is amazing on this thing but the speakers just didnt cut it. Its a single rca connection for each speaker into the subwoofer.

Answer
Well, I would say yes. Although the 'specs' on the web site are not very detailed, it is clear (from the single RCA jack on each speaker to the Sub) that your power amp is built into the Sub enclosure. So, any two, non powered satellite speakers that can handel 80 w each will do.

Not a problem.

What are the two screws on the bottom of the subwoofer of the Logitech Z313 Speaker system used for?

Q. I own a speaker system thats the Logitech Z313 with 2 satellite speakers and a compact subwoofer. There are 2 screws with 2 washer looking things below them that are on the subwoofer box. I want to know what those do because they will not come out no matter which way I turn the screw driver.

Anyone know where to look to find information on making a home theatre with a good sound system?

Anyone know where to look to find information on making a home theatre with a good sound system? I'm looking at a budget of 5-7K including a 50 inch LCD. In ceiling speakers for the front two. Any direction appreciated. Thx.

Answer
Jefferson you already went $3,000 over budget & you forgot the 50 inch LCD.

Plus the two front speakers are suppose to be in ceiling speakers.

And those $600 Denon DRA-697CI receivers are putting out way too much distortion.

I have 22 wired in wall speakers throughout the house (11 rooms) and 4 outdoor wired speakers. All the speakers are hard wired to a central location where they are all connected to a speaker selector. Each set of speakers has its own volume control in the respective locations. The speaker selector needs to be connected to a receiver in order for me to send the audio to the speakers. My question is that since I want to use the receiver for my tv which is just above the receiver as well as to send audio to all the wired speakers, what kind of receiver should I be looking for? More specifically, do I need to lookout for any particualr technical specs like the wattage? Could you recommend an appropriate receiver (5.1 or 7.1)?

Thanks for the help. It is defiantly appreciated!
I am currently using a Denon AVR 2106 receiver to power all the speakers and it has been working fine. So since this appears to work well then what would be an equivalent more up to date receiver?

Answer
I would recommend a surround sound receiver for your main surround system, that also has a second zone output. Then run this to a multichannel amplifier for all the additional speakers throughout the house. I would not recommend running all those speakers off one amplifier and certainly not off a receiver, you will end up damaging the unit. As for how much power for each channel would depend on the speakers efficiency and the loudness your hoping to achieve. For every 3db over the speakers efficiency double your amplifier power until you exceed the sound pressure levels your hoping to achieve and what the speakers are capable or producing.

Can I play an ipod through hifi / house speakers?

Claire13

We are buying a house which has a speaker system throughout the house. I presume this is so you can rig-up a hifi system to play through the house. Is there anyway you can rig-up an ipod to play this way too? It currently has the left and right speaker wires out ready to be input into the back of a hifi.

Answer
Get a monster i-Cable (you can get this in a good electronic store) or an Apple Store. Connect one side to the stereo and the other into your iPod dock. Moster cables aren't neccessary basically you need a proper jackpin. But monster cables have HDMI support too so you can use them for other things as well and support the device. (=

Good luck for your new house (=.

Answer
U said entire stereo system? ok lets do this nicely:

Headunit: Alpine CDA 9856 or Pioneer DEH6800MP

Amps: Memphis Car Audio PR1000.1 (1000 watts RMS at 1 ohm class D mono) for bass and PR100.4 For Highs (50Wrms X4)

Speakers: Infinity Referrence Series Components for the Front, and 6X9 3 ways for the back. Or, Memhis MC class speakers.

Subzzzz: two Memphis M3-124 Subs. 12" subs Dual 4 ohm Coils all wired in parallel to get a 1 ohm load. In a Ported box.

Make sure u get these 2: 3 farad capacitor and 4 gauge wiring.

U will get clean clear sound from ur highs, plus loud, well balanced lows that u can control how loud u wanna get from the sub output on ur headunit. I selected heaunits that are iPOD, satellite radio, CD changer or AUX input ready. And each has built in EQ/Xover of some sort, plus 3 sets of RCA's.

There are many more options out there, but beleive me, u will love this system. Hope u can find a Memphis dealer near u.

What is a cheap but good car sound system?

I'm 15 years old and im getting my first car in october. Since I'm a kid i wont have a lot of money to spend on a sound system. What is the best i can get without having to spend a lot of money? (over $2000)

Answer
You can get a nice system for well under $2,000.

Get a decent Pioneer deck, they're nice because they include crossovers for your main speakers. Taking the low frequency out of them will make even the factory speakers a lot clearer and louder.

Get a single 10" or 12" sub, get a decent brand, here's where to spend a little of the money to get some performance out of it. I'd go with at least JL. Stay away from anything like MTX, pioneer, RF etc. A single 12" JL will be a lot louder than two crap subs anyway. Then get a decent amp, a small Alpine is a good amp for a sub. Around 250 RMS will be plenty to power one sub. With everything installed you should be around $1,000, maybe less. Need to spend a little more? Get a little more power to that sub. A little more? Get a better sub, Boston Accoustics makes great subs. A little more yet? Upgrade the factory speakers and put an amp to them.

What should I look at when buying a good quality speaker system?

I love my music and listening to it on cheap 2.0 speakers has been fine, but I have a bit of cash now and I want to treat myself to a really great 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker system specifically for my PC and MP3 Player. I have a budget of £45 maybe being able to stretch to £55 for exceptional quality. What I want to know is, what specifications should I look for. I saw one with 1000W output and one with 2000W output. What exactly does this mean and what's a minimum Wattage Output level for exceptional quality.
I'm not naive, I realise that £55 won't get me cutting edge technology, but will it get me something that's really noticably better than 2.0?

I also want it to be able to go pretty loud :P

Answer
For PC, if you have 5.1 sound card, it's OK to buy those speaker, but for MP3, I don't know if they have 5.1 capability. My suggestion are, try it first, better listen at quiet room, since you can differentiate the sound quality between one and other speaker. Good store usually have a special listening room.

Power output are how much power that the speaker can handle, it means the higher value will give you higher sound pressure level. It comes with PMPO (Peak Musical Power Output) or RMS
(Root Mean Square).
PMPO denotes that how much power that amplifier can deliver to speaker on a very short time (peak), while RMS denotes power that can be delivered continuously.
Usually 1000 W are PMPO (unless you buy a high end ones).

Now, it depends on you, but remember to listen it first with your well known songs before you buy. Your ears are the best measurement equipments.

How do I go about wiring these 4 speakers to my existing system?

Answer
Strongly unadvised... I'm with the others on this one... Don't do it.

Guessing with this sort of thing, voids your warrantly... has the potential to fry things that are at this point working. However, since you're asking...

3 Ohms, I'll also agree is a rather peculiar load... it's usually 2,4 or 6 Ohms... regardless... this is what you posted... so...

If for instance your amplifier is Class AB and running 50% effiency at 3 Ohms, and say 50 Watts... when you double the Ohms rating you've lost power ouput capability by as much as 1/2... So at 6 Ohms the given channel is now only capable of producing 25 Watts. When you half your power you've halved your effective dB levels by half. It takes twice the power to increase output by +3 (+10 db SPL's) which is a doubling of effective loudness to the average listener.

Typically, you don't want to step up or down more than a single impedance load level... I've yet to see a standard amplifier that'll drive 1.5 Ohms, stabily for your average home theatre system, so that leaves you with going up a level, or trying to stay as close as you can to the existing impedance load... so the maximum target impedance load would be 6 Ohms, and the minimum would be 2. I guess what you're asking, are there any combinations that I can safely wire so I don't fry my gear.

-=[The math...]=-

I don't know if you have a Philips HTR 5000, but it was the only one I could find with 6 channels, and a 3 Ohm load on all those channels... so... we'll work off that one... for examples.

http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/h/htr5000_01/htr5000_01_dfu_eng.pdf

Running Series we Add... running Parallel we take...

1/(1/a+1/b+1/c+1/...)

Where a,b,c are the differnt speakers wired in parallel. Another things you need to make sure, is that the RE (Thiele-Small Spec - RE is the actual DC resistance of the drivers voice coil) be matched to all the other drivers. I'll guarantee you this is not the case... and you'll find that on the satellites, and the mains that were shipped with the system will be working harder than the other drivers at the increased output levels. The high impendance drivers that you're attempting to wire in are more resistive, so the drivers are going to be handling different power levels, and now you risk underpowering scenarios to the motors which is far more likely to fry speakers. Anyways... warnings aside... And you can pretty well guarantee, as mentioned above this this just voided your warranty... ;)

Front speakers...

checking them in series... 3+6 = 9 Ohms... that's likely not going work... or if it does, it'll sound very quiet.
parellel... 1/(1/3+1/6) = 2 Ohms... that might work... but make sure you're watching heat levels on your gear...

So on a hypothetical, you can run your mains in Parallel... and still be able to hear something... at the servere risk of, you guessed it... 'cooking your gear'...

Rears...

> What you could do is run the sats as a
> second set of surrounds in SERIES.

I have to directly contradict The Sound Broker on this one...

> You now have 4 speakers running off the
> rear surrounds at a higher impedence which
> is easier on the amp as far as load.

I'll agree with you to a certain extent... but let's do the math on this...

Running the Satellites in Series... 3+16 = 19 Ohms...

If the amplifier is functioning at 3 Ohms stable, or likely recommended optimum... this just critically underdrives the speakers. 3 Ohms, doubled... becomes 6 Ohms, to 12 Ohms... to nearly 24 Ohms...

If the Channel has a maximum output of 50 Watts... we just went to 25, to 12.5 to 6.25 Watts... Over two speakers... 16 Ohms, suggests they were possibly driven from a Class A, or AB, Tube at some point. The liklihood of hearing much of anything out of those speakers is slim... as the output stages of the Reciever probably aren't functioning at much past 6 Ohms... This is more likely to cook the speakers, and disable the output capabilities of the amplifier stages.

If you run them parallel... 1/(1/3+1/16) = 2.52 Ohms... that's pretty close to 3 Ohms... but... it's obvioulsy pulling more current, something you have backwards, as you state here, that current is stable, indifferent to the impedance load.

> What it won't do is lower the current demands
> since you now have double the drivers to control

This really makes it sound like you know what you're talking about... but come on???

You've got is totally backwards... almost all amplifiers are VOLTAGE DRIVE... NOT CURRENT DRIVE... the difference? A big one... I see an awful lot of crap posts being dished out to unsuspecting people expecting to receive a decent answer... This is nonsense...

Voltage Drive - As the impedance falls, the load voltage will remain constant, as the current increases, and more power is created...

Current Drive - As you are suggesting... a majority, if not all Solid-State amps do not work this way... As the impedance rises, voltage increases, to maintain the same level of current. So as the current rises, the power output level increases...

No matter how you look at this, varying the impedance on a Voltage Drive circuit will alter it's current! Sheesh... for an audio guy, I find this flabbergasting.

As for the last part of the question...

> so watch the heat and listen for audible signs
> of clipping. You will obviously have to
> recalibrate your surround channel levels.

As you have suggested to wire this up, heat is not likely the issue, as there's way to much impedance to even pull any current to the speakers.. so the output power has been critically damped. Without current draw, there's no amplification, so there logically wouldn't be any heat, because no work is being done... Clipping? Huh? And then to suggest recalibration of the surround channel levels... Too funny, I haven't laughed this hard in a long time.

> and to top it all my home theater system does
> not have a line out jack at the back. How do
> I go about wiring these 4 speakers to my existing
> system?

I'd say at this point, unless you understand what's been written so far, I wouldn't even attempt it... Otherwise...

There is little chance this will increase the overall productivity of system. And the above mess is why... ;)

What's the best surround sound system for music in a small room?

Z

I am completely new to surround sound systems, and all the terminology is so confusing. I need a surround sound system that works well for music, is around $100-$200 (new or used), and is good for a 10x12 bedroom. It may end up getting used for a TV down the road, so it would we be good if it also sounds okay for television. I'd really appreciate any help I can get, I feel so clueless!

Answer
are you looking for a 5.1 or 7.1? for $200, well you're in a very tight budget, so you might as well get a entertainment system. try this HT-D550ZA - samsung. it's under $200 in bestbuy. if you are really looking for a very good surround system, forget about bose. i mean, bose is so overrated and the sound quality really sucks. the best speakers out there are defeinitive, martin logan, b&w, vienna acoustics to name a few. i have only a 3.1 set up, all martin logans and i already spent about $4000 just for the center channel speaker, left and right spearkers, and the sub. i want to set it up for a 5.1 but, i don't have enough room to put the 2 speakers, but, i tell you this, i only have 3.1, but the sound quality is superb.

What would the best stereo system set up be for a 93 Ford Explorer?

Andrew

I am not looking for sheer volume, sound quality is my first priority. It is my understanding that a component speaker system is the best for audio imaging but ease of installation and cost are limiting factors. Taking that into consideration, what would the best set up be? High quality full-range stock replacements or lower quality component speakers? Specific speakers suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you.

Answer
The most important aspect of ANY audio system is speaker placement. The quality of the speakers would be a very close second. Very few vehicles lend themselves to a good imaging audio system. Mainly because of the poor factory locations. Doors are by far the worst location to put a speaker in because of the pathlength difference between the left and right speaker. The dashboard would be better but usually suffers from windshield reflection problems. The location that is most likely to produce good imaging is the kick panel location. But kick panel installs are not for every vehicle especially trucks and SUVs in which one sits up high and alot of the sound would be blocked by your legs, steering wheel, and the lower dash. Still there are some exceptions. If you can see both your kickpanels when you sit in your normal driving position in your Explorer then you should be able to hear speakers installed there. If not then you will have to resort to the doors as I don't believe you have dash locations. If I'm correct then your vehicle has 6"x8" speakers in each door. If that is all you have to work with then I suggest that you get 6 1/2" two-way speakers with adaptors to fit instead. No need to spend extra money on components. In the audio world, less is more. The simpler a speaker is, the better. As long as it covers the frequency range. In other words, the coaxial speakers cover the same range as their component counterpart. Anything more than a two-way is overkill and just a way for the manufacturers to make more money. Any shape other than round is inferior in regards to sound quality. Sure the 6"x8" would put out more bass SPL but it will exhibit higher levels of distortion because the oblong shape doesn't operate as linear as a round speaker does. A good 6 1/2" puts out plenty of bass. If you have a 4 door then I suggest you buy the same kind of speaker except go to the next smaller size which would probably be a 5 1/4". The reason being because you want to obtain that "bass up front" image so you want the bigger speakers up front. You can always upgrade later to a powered subwoofer that will handle all the low frequencies. With your main speakers crossed over just right, this will take the bass load off of the main speakers and improve clarity as well as reliability. I can't recommend any specific speakers because everyone's hearing and musical preference is different. Stick to reputable brands. Just take some CDs of music you are familiar with when you audition speakers. Don't be afraid to ask alot of questions. It's your money afterall. Your interior will affect the overall sound so take this into account when shopping around. Leather wil reflect the higher frequencies so soft dome tweeters usually sound best with that. Fabric will absorb the frequencies so a hard dome might sound better in that environment. If you use a hard dome tweeter and you have leather, it might sound too harsh. And if you have fabric and use a soft dome, it might sound too dull. Got it? Another thing I highly recommend is sound deadening with something like Dynamat Xtreme. At least the doors. This will dramatically improve your system's bass and dynamic range. I hope this helps. Good luck and happy listening.

What's the best speaker system for a bedroom?

Mitty

I am looking to purchase a speaker system for my boyfriends bedroom. The one he has now was 2 speakers and a subwoofer and sounded great and was loud enough to fill the entire house. Sadly he blew the speakers out. I want something similar not like a 5 speaker surround sound deal and around a $200 budget. Primary use is music. Something he can keep on the desk and move around.

Answer
I heard a story from one of my family members that my uncle is notorious for blowing out speakers, but he never blew a JBL speaker.
- Some good receiver speaker brands are polk audio, energy, monoprice, klipsch, M&K, JBL.ect
- Some good receiver brands are onkyo, denon, pioneer, yamaha, sony.

Also I am not sure if your looking for computers speakers that plug into the colored outputs on the back of a computer.
- Some good computer speaker brands are logitech, creative inspire, cyber acoustics (ca), altec lansing.ect

- At crutchfield (never shoped at this site tho) the 5.1 energy take classic is on sale for $200!, it's originally $300-500.
- If not you can go to the speaker brand sites and look at individual speakers and then look at sites/stores that sell them.

Is it Ok to join the output of guitar effect to normal speaker system?

best speaker system computer image

Nyein Z

I bought an electric guitar and guitar effect.
I already have an old guitar amp which is not good now.
I am thinking to join the output of guitar effect to normal speaker system for live show or to computer for recording instead of guitar amp.
I am just worried if it will harm my speaker system or computer.

Answer
Nyein Z,

It won't harm either the speaker system or the computer as long as the output is not from a guitar amp. The speaker out from an amp can blow up lots of stuff. Don't do that.

Plugging into a 'speaker system' like a stereo from the effects box should be fine, and same into the computer. Turn everything DOWN before you start. It shouldn't hurt anything.

Then the only challenge is making it sound good. Try stuff and I bet you'll find a good sound.

Good Luck,
John

What is the best, most minimal tv I can buy?

speaker system ratings image

The Fatal

I want a tv with no extra features. I want it to be a large display, and a good quality display, but I don't want to pay for features I'm not going to use. I have a huge speaker system, so I don't want to pay for internal speakers. I have external "Smart-like" devices, so I don't want smart tv features that will just make using devices I have harder since I will have to bypass the built-in features, and add a boot time to my TV.

3d would be cool, but not make-or break.

Answer
3D tends to be included in the higher end models which you dont want.

Look on amazon for Panasonic Plasma televisions in native 720 resolution. These start about $550.

Note that Consumer Reports just came out. The December issue has their ratings of television models and prices. I strongly suggest you go buy a copy and see what they recommend.

How to filter low frequency out of audio signal?

Robert

I heard there are diferent devices for filtering low frequency out of an audio signal so I dont damage my High Frequency Speakers. I have seen some electrical component soldered in place with my High Frequency Speakers. Someone told me that this component does the filtering. Can somebody please tell me what this component is called and where i can get them and what do i have to watch out when buying them. I am building myself a costum speaker system.

Answer
Without going into establishing that your drivers
(speakers) are matched to the characteristics of your enclosures (speaker boxes), you will want to gather a bit of data.
Determine the frequency of your desired crossover point. One freq value for each crosspoint between drivers. Just a woofer and a tweet would need 1 crosspoint. A low, a mid, and a tweet needs 2 cross points, etc.
Now what is the max power the enclosure will be handling, and this tells you the power handling (wattage) capability requirement, for the crossover components.
Next - you must know the nominal or marked impedance of each driver. Like 16 or 8 or 4 ohms. Some drivers may have odd impedance. You could still calculate.
There may be a commercially available crossover, of needed ratings, that is already assembled and is installed by making the proper connections to the drivers, and from the box input terminals, to the crossover.
One could homebrew their own crossover. Do a search on crossover design and you can obtain formulas, in simple algebra, to calculate and then purchase your own raw components to build.
There are first order filters - ie: 6 dB per octave slope crossover - which if you have a capacitor connected in series with your tweeter and nothing else, that is a 6 dB/oct cross. This would perhaps be a value of 5 uF or many other values of capacitance, to block lower frequencies because the capacitor shows a increasing reactance or "resistance" to lower freqs and less "resistance" to higher ones, thus the "lows" have negligible effect on the tweeter. These capacitors will be non-polarized electrolytic or a mylar or other style capacitors.
A second order crossover has a inductor and capacitor minimum, involved with each driver. This is 12 dB per octave cross and a sharper change between drivers. Third order (18db/oct) filters have more reactive components and other parts, plus a steeper slope.
Read the search findings and they will tell a lot about it.
Cheap components will equal cheap performance and poor reliability. All depends on what you are looking to do. How good do you want it?
