Looking for hi wattage sub in a 5.1 speaker set?

Scratcher2

I am looking to upgrade my current pc speaker setup, an old 5.1 with a 17 watt sub (saddening I know) for something with better sound and better bass. so far I have been looking at the Z623 from logitech
http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/speaker-system-z623

but this is only 2.1, and I really want 5.1 for gaming and for mixing songs.
Anyone know of a sub 300 dollar 5.1 setup with a good sub?

Answer
The Logitech Surround Sound Speakers Z506 comes in at $99.99, my friend.

I'm afraid I've never used this speaker system so I can't comment on just how good it is. The second link below, however, offers reviews from people that have used it.

Which is better for me the Logitech Z623 or the Z523?

David

-I don't plan on listening to anything past 50%.
-I want to have the clearest sound.
-I want good deep and clear bass.
-I will mainly use it on my PC to watch media and maybe gaming.
-I am only going to use it in my small bedroom.
-Price really doesn't matter.

Answer
- Is there a neither option? Just to answer your question, the 2.1 Z623 is much better than the 2.1 Z523, but they both have their flaws.
- Logitech speakers are overpriced garbage.
- Example: The Logitech Z906 is their best 5.1 system, but it does not even do HD audio and is overpriced (some people even prefer their old discontinued version better) = Your better of getting a proper surround sound system that consists of a receiver and passive speakers.
- Example: The Logitech 5.1 Z506 is a total waste of money. The Logitech 2.1 Z523 is a total waste of money and any 2.1 system lower then that is a total waste of money. = They call these kiddy toys.
- Example: Every Logitech speaker system has something wrong/flaws with it, just read the reviews and you will get what I mean.
= I hope you can find better active speakers than the Logitech Z623. I got a tip at least tho, you want to wait until black friday so everything is cheap if you live in the US.

how can you hook up a wireless speaker system in your home?

rcgriffin2

I have moved into a new home and there is not enough attic space to run wires for my 5.1 theater system.

Answer
Never heard of wireless speaker 5.1. It seems like the getting all the speakers to synchronize when using wireless would be a nightmare. Imagine one speakers wireless reception is getting some interfernce and drops some packets which have to be retransmitted and then this causes a delay. I suggest finding a way to run wires. There are creative solutions and probably ALOT cheaper alternative to wireless. Also with wireless, how would you power the speakers? It is not easy to get 100 watts of power to a speaker without wires.

Can I connect bose speaker system directly with a philips dvd player?

bose acuastimass 3 series model 301 speaker system

Answer
Those speakers can't connect directly to a dvd player. An A/V receiver is needed to power the speakers unless your dvd player is a home theater in a box with the integrated tuner/receiver/amplifier. If it's one of those, then yes you can replace those stock speakers with your bose.
(lol...If it's one of those, you can connect your bose. I'm a poet and don't know it.)

replace speaker for philips mc138 system?

Sarah

What is the best speaker for a Philips MC138 Stereo System? I need to replace both as i have been using computer speakers right now.

Answer
There really isn't a "best" so to speak, but any low cost speaker - preferably used, will do the job. Speakers and stereo equipment don't really need to be matched exactly.

Check the local Craigslist for bookshelf speakers. Often when the main unit fails, yet the speakers were still good, people try to sell them for cheap. Thrift stores are another option. Example... I have a 3 piece set of RCA branded (Radio Shack) speakers that sound pretty good. They came from a higher end home theater in a box system. I've been trying to sell them for $10 on Craigslist with no results. I am about to toss them or donate them.

Is the Logitech X-240 a good speaker system?

yahoo

iPod/ MP3 player cradle, 2 speakers, and a subwoofer.

Answer
Logitech's X-series is ok, but their Z-series is far better. The X-series isn't too powerful, but for someone who's not an audiophile or a bass nut, it shouldn't really matter.

in Windows 7 how do I restore the speaker icon in system tray?

Pam Lofgre

The speaker icon in the system tray just disappeared. I have Windows 7. How do I get it back?

Answer
Firstly check it is turned on in system tray icons --
Right click the little up arrow next to the system tray - Customize notification icons - Turn system icons on or off (bottom, in blue). Check volume is set to on.

If that isn't the problem you can try resetting the icon cache by deleting registry keys. Be warned, I suggest not messing with the registry if you are not familiar with it and how to back up keys properly first. If you aren't familiar with the registry ask someone that is to help you.

1. Back up the Registry by creating a restore point. (or backup the keys in question)
2. Go to Start > Run (or Windows-key + R), type in regedit and hit OK.
3. Navigate to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify.
4. Delete the values IconStreams and PastIconsStream.
5. Open up the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Processes tab, select explorer.exe and click End Process.
6. Open the Applications tab and click New Task at the bottom-right of the window.
7. In the message box that pops up type in explorer.exe and hit OK.
8. Explorer.exe will reload, and the missing icons should now be back in the system-tray where they belong.
9. Then if the volume bar isn't there, go to taskbar properties (where the volume was gray) and simply tick the box.

I have done this myself in the past when one of my icons went missing. Worked well.

USB speaker system not working?

Zach Davis

Hello,

I recently built my own computer (first time). The motherboard has a built in sound card on it. So I have headphones that plug into a jack in the front of the computer. That jack has an audio chord that I plugged directly onto my motherboard. The headphones work fine, and so does my mic (also plugged into a jack on the front. When I plug my speakers into a USB port on the back (directly connected to motherboard), or into the USB port on the front (next to the audio jacks), I can't get the speakers to work. It registers that something is plugged into the usb, the speakers have power, and even after switching the primary audio device to the device in the USB, it won't work. Can someone give me some guidance? Is there a driver I need for the motherboard, or the built in sound card? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
USB speakers actually have "sound card" built in, so they are not using your motherboard's soundcard. You need to download and install driver for your speakers if Windows doesn't detect them properly. But if your speakers have Audio In port you can just connect them to your motherboards audio out jack, bypassing whole USB audio portion altogether.

microphone+speaker system question.?

A7xmaggot6

well i gotta old speaker system (10-12 yrs old) that was top of the line back then, is it possible to plug in modern mics into that? or are there special speakers for mics, or is too old?

Answer
Nothing special. A speaker is pretty much a speaker. You don't need to match mics and speakers. You do, of course, need an amplifier between the mic and speakers. :-)

Connecting speakers to a receiver?

Tech Dude

I know of a building that has a sound system, with over 30 speakers on the ceiling. In the sound system, there are many speaker cables, but one going into the receiver. How could there be so many speaker cables, but only one or two going into the receiver? What device is used to do that? Also, there were microphone jacks in the wall, with about 4 going into one input. How do they set it up that way?

Answer
Sounds like amature wiring. The speaker cables are probably spliced together before reaching the speakers.

The microphone jacks all being connected to one input will work, but the quality will be lacking if more than one microphone is used at a time.

With over 30 speakers in the ceiling all in the same set of outputs, there is likely to be impedance problems, which can result in fuses being blown if the wrong amplifier is used.

Its probably not worth fixing if it's broken. I would reccomend consulting a professional about replacing the system. Equipment for a large system like that is not going to be available at consumer electronics stores.

When i connect speakers to my system and microphone ..i'm getting noise thorugh the speakers ..?

surendrana

how do i make sure that this shud not come when both are connected .i.e speakers and microphone
in fact connected speakers and microphone to my system..

Answer
What it is doing is that the mic. is taking the sound from what your computer is making, and it is taking it and pushing it through the speakers. I had the same problem, what I did is I moved the speakewers away from the mic. Or you might have to unplug the mic if you want to use your speakers, but that is worthless. I hope that will help you.

Any ideas on a Speaker System for my 18th Party?

Georgie :-

Something relatively low in price but with good sound quality at high volume that will be compatible with my ipod.

Alternatively, how could I plug my ipod into my Dad's Hi-Fi?
thanks chicagoinstaller that's really useful...but what is the cable called that I would have to buy to connect the ipod to my Dad's Hi-Fi?
ah waaait that's what "3.5mm stereo to RCA analog adapter" means...

Sorry! :-S

Answer
You would need an Ipod dock to just run speakers off you ipod, but if you had a set of amplified speakers you could also run this too from the ipod headphone jack and be ok.

Choices
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.ipod-accessory-info.com/bose-sound-dock.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.ipod-accessory-info.com/ipod-speakers.shtml&usg=__AbGTOOO3UZUwps7fYNyYrjkdpqA=&h=387&w=500&sz=52&hl=en&start=15&um=1&tbnid=TtsnLJr0llpkWM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dipod%2Bspeakers%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN

EXPENSIVE but nice
http://hifi-ring.com/ipod_dock/

In order to connect you Ipod into your father's stereo you would need a cable like this below

http://images.monoprice.com/productlargeimages/6652.jpg

Make sure you pay attention to the two ribs or stripes on the smaller connector (which means its a stereo connector) some come with less and some have more, but in this case you need a
"3.5mm stereo to RCA analog adapter."
This can plug into any input on the stereo except the phono or turntable input. Most should even have an input on the face of the unit for easy quick connections, if not just get the cable into the back input and leave it there when not using the ipod.

What is the best speaker system for a party (college atmosphere)?

sportss15b

Looking for a speaker system to put in our party room in our house. Need something that is loud and sounds good but without going crazy on the price. Anyone got any ideas on what to look for?

Answer
One of the best "party speakers" out there is the Cerwin-Vega ("AT" or "D" Series or newest "VE" Series) loudspeaker system in either a 12" three-way or the huge 15" three-way models. They don't need a lot of power to get very loud, and they put out chest pounding bass too! You can find these all over the web, and there are usually quite a few on eBay -new and used.

Another good choice is either the DCM KX-12 or KX-212 model.

The above choices can handle the largest rooms. However, if you want to stay away from large, heavy speakers, and you don't have a large room (e.g. under 400 sq. ft.), then a very reasonably priced floor speaker from MTX Audio is a good choice: the Monitor 600i.

Bottom line, as a rule of thumb when you're looking for "party speakers", look for specs that offer a high sensitivity (usually 90dB or higher), good, deep bass (30Hz or lower), and can handle at least 100 watts. Other than that, find the pair that looks the best to you. If you purchase locally, I recommend auditioning them first to see if the sound is good to you or not.

Keep in mind, however, "party speakers" are usually not designed for critical listening (a term often used by audiophiles), but rather designed for being loud, and likewise, "high-end" or "audiophile" speakers or not ideal for use as a party speaker usually because they require pinpoint positioning and typically have a lower sensitivity.

What size speakers in a mazda 6?

I'm trying to buy some speakers for it but dont kno what size they are. Someone please help.

sound system for my 2009 mazda 6?

BABYREE

so i have a 2009 mazda 6i touring.

the stock sound system in it is already pretty nice. i always get compliments on them.
the bass slaps, but not TOO hard and doesn't sound crappy like other cars.

however, my back 4 or 5 "speakers" are empty..or fake as i should say
(because the v6 version comes with bose system) so i guess it was mazda's way of making you buy the v6.

i never noticed that those speakers weren't there until someone told me "they weren't working" cuz i don't sit in the back.
it looks like i have speakers there, but if you open my trunk and look underneath...it's just Styrofoam underneath those four or five (i forgot how many) "so called" speakers. haha.

regardless though, my stock throughout the car still sounds nice.

so my question is. can i just put some subs in my car to make the bass a little stronger?
i'm not too worried about the missing speakers right now because money is an issue.
i'm taking one step at a time.

here's a breakdown of my question:
- can i just put subs in my trunk for now to make it slap harder?
- if so, what kind? (detail) and will i need an amp? (detail)

- let's say i do have the money, what kind of system should i get? please give me a break down of everything. and around how much it would cost.

THANKS!

p.s
i'm a girl. i do know a thing a two about cars (i love cars) but when it comes to wiring and stuff i'm just too lazy to do research. lol. with that said...since i'm a girl...i don't want a very masculine system. i want CLASSY WITH A UMPH. <---idk if that's a word hahah!! thanks again.
forgot to say my budget...but i guess under 400?? since its just for the subs and amp...

and to clarify: i DON'T have the bose system.
that's for the v6. i just have regular mazda stock system.

Answer
The links bellow would make a good upgrade to the bose system. You don't want to over power your factory system with large subs an monster amps. This is a simple system is about $550 to $600 with shipping an handling depending on your location. You can also use a different ported box a an run the port up into one of the factory dummy speaker holes. This would be a custom box an most likely cost more. The Memphis line of audio is a very close match to the bose . Also they been in the business going 40yrs.They also have a good warranty. Now for the Pac adapter you will need this to hook up the new amp without damaging your factory radio. This is a must have . Not having can void the cars warranty if you have one. I hope this will help you . You can email me if you have any questions. Good luck with your project.

Where can i get cheap DJ speakers?

firstrom20

My friend and i are DJs. were planning to start in the summer. we have everything but the speakers. we dont have a lot of money.

Answer
Hello,

When it comes to buying your first DJ speakers, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Budget. Of course, this is the bottom line. If you only have, say, $200 to spend, your choices will be a lot less than if you had $1000. That said, pro sound equipment is not cheap, and it may cost a little more to get started than you think. Really, I would say it would cost around 1000 bucks for a good, reliable starter system, but I know where you're coming from. When I was 13 years old, getting started, I didn't have much cash either. I have some ideas to help you get started DIRT CHEAP. Just read to the bottom.

Amplifier. You need an amp, too. When I started DJing, I thought I had skirted this issue when I used my home stereo receiver as an amp for a year or so... but, one night, at a crazy dance at my own high school (we're talkin' early 90's here) the receiver gave out (blew power transformer) in the middle of the dance. You need real amplification.

Size. Depending on the type of venues that you will play, you will have different needs as to the size of the speakers you need. In my career, I went from 15's to rock house parties and small dances to multiple 15's and 18" subwoofers to playing monsterous clubs where I didn't need any equipment to now using an ultra-portable system that sounds great in mid-sized bars. It all depends on what you want to do.

Transportation. Don't laugh; your choice of speakers must match with your transportation. If you have a big, covered truck, you can haul almost anything, but if your largest covered transportation is a sedan, you will need to have smaller, more portable speakers. (Smaller and more portable does not mean that they won't sound as good, really it means that they will cost more.) Also, make sure you are buying speakers that will fit in your largest covered transportation. An open truck bed works great, but you will be kicking yourself when you have your first gig on a rainy day and your thumpers won't fit in your mama's Camry. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.

Now, having said that, I'm going to answer your question with a few assumptions. I'm assuming that you want to spend the least amount of money possible and you need a versatile basic pair of 2-way 15's. These will be suitable for most events, they are rather portable, they look cool, and they sound pretty good. I'm also assuming that you know that this system will only serve as a starter, and you will need to save cash to add on to it very soon.

Option #1: Radio Shack 15's. Don't laugh, I started with the old generation RS 15's back in the days. They had great frequency response, which is very important when you only have one pair of speakers, no subs. You want something that plays down to 30hz. The $85 RS speakers will, and you can buy a decent amp there for $200 (model 32-2055). So $170 for the speakers and $200 for the amp. Not gonna get much more affordable than that.

Option #2: Hit up www.sixstardj.com and buy a cheap system. Here's one http://www.sixstardj.com/madjsopak.html . I know nothing of Marathon equipment, but for $300 you can get 2 15's, an amp, and speaker cables. If you don't need an amp, you can buy the speakers alone. Another brand to check out on the sixstar website is Gemini. The've got some cheap speakers, but not as cheap as Marathons.

Option #3: Go ghetto. If you live in a place with ghetto car stereo shops or flea markets, go into those places and ask if they can get you a deal on some DJ speakers. The ghetto shops usually have the hook-up on generic imported speakers that look like pro speakers. They will blow out quick, but if you can get one or two gigs out of them, you can buy something better. Generally, watch out for generic imported "pro" speakers. If you do buy them, expect them to junk out on you.

Option #4: Go with something smaller than 15". On the sixstardj.com website, you can buy P.A. speakers down to 8" by some brands, including Gemini. I don't recommend anything smaller than 12" for stand alone, but if you had a subwoofer, 8" mains would be fine. Also, maybe you can do a few summer parties with tens and save up your money. Just know that you need 15's rated down to 40 or 30 hz to hear any bass in a loud room. Even my Yamaha dual 15's only go down to 55hz, and they are useless for music without a subwoofer.

Option #5: Check Craig's list, eBay, Amazon.com, and local classifieds for a good deal on a pair of 15's. I doubt if you'll get a really good pair cheap this way, but you may find options. For example, this eBay store http://stores.ebay.com/OnlyFactoryDirect_Pro-Audio-Speakers_W0QQfsubZ2 has a bunch of cheapo generic pa speakers. Remember my warning from option #3!!!!

Option #6: Skirt the amp issue. You can press your luck with a home stereo receiver or a low-powered pyramid amp from www.partsexpress.com or Radio Shack. Bring an oscillating fan from home to keep it cool and c

Help with home theater speaker box design.?

confusedgu

Ok, I'm looking to build an awesome home theater system using car audio speakers. I have 2 Alpine type R subwoofers and 4 - 6.5 round speakers with amps and everything. What I don't have for all that is beautiful speaker boxes which i plan to make using walnut wood. All of the construction I can do. What I'm finding difficult is finding the dimensions, Qts, Dp, Xmax and all that to get the optimally designed box. What size port to use ect...... I would like to build four boxes for the 6.5 rounds and for now one subwoofer box. If anyone with this knowledge could please help me I would appreciate it greatly. If at all possible I would even like to contact you so we could discuss this further. Thanks!

Answer
Take a look at this software:
http://www.ajdesigner.com/speaker/index.php
Also you can get others, do a search for "speaker box design"
I wouldn't like to discourage you, but in the long run it would cost you more to do it yourself, than if you buy a good but inexpensive system.
If you find satisfaction on doing it yourself, then go for it!
Speakers designed for cars aren't the most suitable for the home, but they are OK. In addition to the box design, you would have to have the right cross-overs, but you may already have them.
A 5.1 receiver may have outputs that may not be suitable to drive your car speakers, but perhaps they would be OK, just know that this may be the case. Different speakers have different sensitivity, so some require more power than others to produce the same acoustical output. On a 5.1 system all of these are matched.
You can email me if you want, look at my profile.

Cheap speakers + decent computer = headache!?

RickyRicar

My wife bought me these speakers for my birthday for my PC: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=4810671

The satillite speakers all plug into the subwoofer (bare-wire clip style) and the woofer has 2 red+white RCA and one 3.5mm stereo jack.

My PC has a SPDIF (coaxial), and 3.5mm jacks for rear, side, front, and center+subwoofer, along wih the typical line in, line out, and microphone jacks.

PC Specs: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00820204&lc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=3339287&dlc=en

When I plug the woofer into the computer using the 3.5mm stereo plugs (male to male cable) and set my PC to 5.1 sound, the center speaker and subwoofer don't work. (Vista) Haven't hooked up the back speakers yet. When the PC is set to Quad speakers, I get sound out of woofer, left, right and center, though I fear I'm not utilizing the speakers to the fullest.

How can I hook these speakers to my PC and still get 5.1 sound out of them?

Answer
Keep in mind that you are using a speakers designed for a home theater, and not specifically for a PC. That may be why you are having sound issues.

My 5.1 Logitech system connects to my PC with three 3.5 jacks (fronts, rears, sub). Also, the speakers can be configured using the driver software. With a home theater system, you probably didn't get any software, and the default Windows driver probably doesn't recognize it properly.

If anything, I'd check your Vista sound settings (Control Panel > Sound > Configure) to make sure it is set to a 5.1 system, rather than simple stereo.

But I personally would consider using a system designed specifically for PC's. You can find a couple 5.1 systems for a comparable price:

Which is the most effective to hook up my speaker system to.... HD TV or Xbox 360 and why?

ltbenns

Answer
The most effective way to set up your 360 would be to use the hd video cables that came with the 360 to hook it up to the tv. Then buy an additional optical cable (can buy for anywhere between $10 - $20) to hook up the audio to your speaker system. The optical output on the 360 is on the connector between the cables the 360 came with and the unit itself.

The reasons are-

1) your HD tv is designed to give the best picture it can. It is a specialized piece of video equipment with aditional speakers attached to it. Your sound system is designed to give the best audio it can. Use both of these components to the best of their abilities. Dont use one to pass through the other.

(2) you need the optical cable to deliver digital sound to your speakers receivers. The cables that come with the 360 only deliver analog sound. If you have a digital connection, you can get true Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound. If you use the analog cables you only get a simulated Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound. (the difference is clearly noticable with games like gears of war)

i hope you take my advice. Enjoy!

Need a new speaker system for Xbox 360 and Computer...any suggestions?

troubled

Mine recently died and I'm looking for a new one. The one I have in my living room is nice, and is a 5.1 system with RCA connections to connect items to it, but I can't seem to find one like that anywhere. All of them seem to use 3.5mm jacks instead, and though that would work, my PC only has onboard audio, and I hate to pay for a 5.1 system and only be able to use the front speakers. Also, all of those seem to only have one connection, and I used to hate having to unplug my computer and plug in my Xbox, and vice versa, everytime I switched between the two. Anyway, I would like to find one that's like the one in my living room. A 5.1 system, with two or more RCA inputs instead of 3.5mm inputs. Thanks!

It really depends on how much you want to spend. You could go with an actual home theater system with big speakers that could cost $1,000's or HTIB that's under $1,000. You could also go with any of the Logitech HT PC speakers and use their game system adapter that converts the 3.5mm to RCA plugs. All the 3.5mm plus do is carry two sound channels which the converter then splits into individual RCA jacks.

Question about 5.1 computer speaker system.?

Dean Chris

I'm thinking about buying a 5.1 Computer Speaker System (http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Computer-PC-Subwoofer-5-1-Multimedia-Speaker-System-/380364248289?pt=PCA_Speakers&hash=item588f79d4e1 / You can read the description of it there) I'm afraid I will buy it and not have the right place to plug in the wires. I have a 2010 Studio XPS 8100 running Windows 7 Home Premium. I don't exactly know what music card I have. If it helps any here's a picture of the back of the computer:

An answer in a reasonable amount of time would be helpful cause the bid ends in 4 hours. If you need to know anything else about my computer just tell me what you need and how to do it and I will gladly provide it for you.

Answer
The A 320 HCS 6 from Jamo is a high-quality home theater speaker system designed to deliver exceptional audio quality from compact components. The system includes a SUB 250 subwoofer, an A 3 CEN.4 center speaker, and a set of 4 A 320 satellite speakers.

The A 320 speakers each contain a 3.75" woofer and a 1" tweeter to provide a full frequency response. The rounded cabinet design allows placement virtually anywhere. The speakers can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and can be precisely aimed for optimal performance.

Does anyone know what kind of speaker system this is?

i want to buy an ipod speaker system and this specific one but i dont know the name of it

http://www.hqspeakers.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/ipod-speakers-review.jpg

Answer
They're called AktiMate Mini 2-way Active Bookshelf Speakers. They come in black, red, and white. At $699.99, they're very pricey and if you don't mind sacrificing the built in iPod dock, you could get better speakers (such as studio monitors) and just use cables to hook up your iPod.

Will a Bose Acoustimass 3 Speaker System work with an MP3 player/iPad?

Dark Lord

What I mean is, does it have a jack that I can plug into an MP3 player or an iPad? You know, the kind of common jack you find on the end of most headphones or earbuds. I don't know what it's called, but I'd like to know before I buy a $200 speaker system and find out I can't use it.

Answer
M advice would be to take the MP3 player and ipad to see if it does. It may or may not, Bose is not an open source system. I would think you can plug into the aux input on the volume dial and all is well, that is how it should be. Save yourself the headache and go through the trouble of connecting the devices and see for yourself. That would be your best bet.

Best.

Is there a speaker system that can work for an ipod and a mp3 player?

Baby doll

I need one that can plug into a wall outlet and that can also charge my ipod. Something close to this will be nice too. I just need it to work for both ipod and mp3 player.

Answer
impossible. there are a wide variety of mp3 players but only one type of socket for an ipod.

its either one or the other. i'd choose ipod cua those types of speakers supporting ipod are the easiest to find.

What is your awareness of english proficiency in the philippines?

answrpls

Please make a broad answer. Thanks.

Answer
While English is an official language along with "Filipino" (actually Tagalog), and is used as a medium of instruction in schools, in the legal system, etc., the reality is that it is a second language to most Filipinos. Most Filipinos today prefer to speak in their own local language, such as Tagalog, Cebuano (Bisaya), Ilocano, etc. and tend to look askance at Filipinos who speak in English outside the classroom, the office, etc. Thus most Filipinos are not good speakers in English, despite the government's claim that the Philippines has the third-largest English-speaking population in the word.

In general the only Filipinos who speak English well are those from the upper and middle classes who study in private schools and who speak English at home. For these people, English could even be considered an L1 (first language) not an L2.

There are also some notable exceptions to these generalizations; for example, the mountain people from Northern Luzon speak good English because of the influence of American Protestant missionaries (the Catholic church, in contrast, translated everything into the vernacular).

That's as far as speaking is concerned. With listening, on the other hand, nearly all Filipinos have very good listening comprehension skills. Case in point: English-language movies and TV programs are shown without subtitles. Even the poor who prefer to watch Tagalog movies (and lately Korean drama series dubbed in Tagalog) can watch a Hollywood movie and can even get the jokes in English.

Ditto with reading, as nearly all textbooks are in English and the major broadsheets are in English.

Writing is like speaking in that grammar and syntax are generally atrocious, except again for those from the upper and middle classes who have had the fear of God and faulty subject-verb agreement pounded into them by their teachers.

So a very good predictor of a Filipino's English proficiency is his/her socio-economic status, and this could be gleaned from the school he/she went to. The rich generally avoid the public schools, except at the college or university level (specifically regarding the University of the Philippines, which is rated as superior to the private universities). There are many exceptions of course but by and large this is generally true.

A strange request: prices for things in the Philippines?

altaplomb

Can anyone from Philppines give me the price in pesos for these things (normal, basic prices)?:

1. A stereo system (with cd and mp3 on it)
2. A single bed (with mattress)
3. A chair for using at a computer

Not expecting many replies, but if anyone can help....

Many thanks!

Answer
1. A stereo system: I suggest you just buy a DVD player with CD & mp3 or 4 player worth 1,300.00 at Raon St. Quiapo combined it with speaker/amplifier (2,500watts PMPO) worth 2,000.00 at the same store.
Total: 3,300.00
2. A single bed (w/ mattress): 3,000.00 (+minus) at P.Gil, Paco
3. A computer chair: 1,500.00 (+minus) same location in #2

Grand Total: 7,800.00 (+minus)
A word of advise: Let your Filipino buddy deals with these stores or might end up just like buying in some big appliance store.

What is the best portable speaker system for ipods and ipads under $100?

Derek

Im looking to take advantage of the cyber monday deals today, and am looking for a portable speaker system that has very good base and would allow me to plug my ipod or ipad in without having to connect the speakers to a computer. What is the very best speaker system under $100 (cyber monday deals) with a lot of bass and good sound quality? Note: I am not looking for headphones

Answer
Jawbone Jambox wireless bluetooth speaker can be had for $119 on Amazon.com
I would think for the money Jawbone would be hard to beat. As you know you pay for bass, whatever you get will not raise eyebrows. A far better option would be to purchase a pair of Dayton Audio B652 bookshelf speakers for $43.83 ass to it LP-2020A Lepai Tripath Class-T Hi Fi Audio Mini Amp with power supply for $15.69. I assure you this would be the far better sounding set up under $100 anyone can imagine with money to spare. You may have to get a few cables for everything to come together but you would still be within your $100 budget. It will put a smile on your face every time you hear it.

Installing SONOS a whole-house speaker system with wall mounted speakers?

Duncan

The wiring and installation would not be an issue as I am having a large renovation done on the both storeys of my house, and want to install a SONOS system throughout a bathroom, a living room and a kitchen, through Bose wall-mounted cube speakers. I would prefer to use my iPhone, iPod or Mac as a controller, and also have a wireless router located next to the living room. As the price of these SONOS systems are very expensive, I was wondering what components I would need and how much each would cost?

Answer
You're going to love the Sonos! I have four zone players, one dedicated for my home theatre and three more as sources into an existing distributed audio system. The iPhone works ok to control it but it seems the iPhone has trouble maintaining connection with the wi-fi, the iPad works much better for a controller.

Where are the wires for your in-wall speakers? All coming together in a closet some place? If so, you can just put all your Sonos players there. You will need the Sonos zone bridge to connect to your router with a wire, not wireless. Or you can connect one Sonos zone player to the router with a wire and it can function as the bridge. Personally I have a network HDD down stairs connected to the router and the Sonos Zone bridge also connected to the router. The zone players are all four upstairs in the control closet for the home theatre and distributed audio system. All that is wireless, only the Zone bridge needs to be connected to the router.

They make zone players with preamp output like mine and they also make them with built in amplifiers. In your case you may want to just get the ones with the amplifiers built in to connect to your existing wall speakers. Alternatively if all the speaker wires do come together at one place you could buy a multi channel amplifier and use it to drive the speakers and use the Sonos Zone player with preamp output. In my case I have two twelve channel amplifiers powering eleven zones. Two six zone controllers are connected to the two amplifiers. The controllers have eight sources, three of the sources are supplied by Sonos Zone players. I can have different music on the three Sonos Zone players and the distributed audio controllers can send any one of those three to any room. They can also send anything from the remaining five sources to any room. Eventually I would like to eliminate the old system and just get more Sonos Zone players and make the whole system Sonos but as you mentioned, Sonos is not cheap! The upgrade is on the wish list however:-)

Probably the best solution for you is to just use the Sonos players with amplifiers built in. Although, your Bose cubes have no bass and I do not believe the Sonos with the amplifier has any sort of subwoofer output. You may want to think about that. If you get the Sonos with preamp output you can route that through a crossover and send bass to a separate subwoofer. You may want to add wall mounted subwoofers to go with those cubes. In that case definitely get the Sonos players with preamp output. You may want to check, the Sonos with an amp may also have preamp out so in that case that would be ideal.

Have fun, you will be amazed at how well Sonos works!

Help with PC mic?

The Keeper

Hey i just got a new microphone from someone and i plugged it in but it just wont work.

It only has 1 cable (not USB or anything just an audio cable) and NO on/off switches or anything.

I plugged it it and...no sound comes from it

anyone know whats wrong? like i said it doesnt plug in via USB, its just a pink audio cable which is plugged in securely

Answer
first ensure you have enable mic.

double click speaker icon (at system tray) near system time, select options>advance> there are 2 option playback & recording...in both, tick "mic", press okay.

Now adjust volume level of mic, ensure it is not mute.

to test goto start> programs/all programs> accessories> entertainment> sound recorder..press record button and see if signal is coming...

PS:- Once i had a problem - 2 mic connection, it had 1 infront of computer(off) and other at back side (on , by default). I had to click on my sound card program to check options and it had option for enabling front mic connection.. it solve my problem. Check if your sound program have some option related to mic.

What is the best speaker system for under 700 USD, 500 pounds. Loud loud sub and loud loud clear speakers?

Mak

I really wanna know what kinda of sound system I could buy that would blow the roof off and yet still sound really good for under 500 British pounds (700 USD). I wanna connect it to my computer. I have heard of the Klipsch promedia 5.1 and Logitech z 5500 but wondering if i could buy something for non-computer use that can still be connected to the computer or buy a sub and speakers separately to make an awesome kit. I only have a small room

Answer
Home theater in a box systems are OK, but the build overall quality isn't that great.

Your best bet, would be to do some research, shop around, and build a theater system yourself. You will bet much better overall quality and you have the freedom of choice as far as parts go.

What you will need is:
-- 5.1 Receiver with your preference of audio connections (Optical, RCA, HMDI).
-- Front (left and right) channel speakers.
-- Center channel speaker.
-- Rear channel speakers.
-- Sub-woofer(s).
-- Cables/hook-ups.

It sounds like a daunting task, but it isn't as hard as it looks. It's a little time-consuming though. In the end, you will be much happier with the results.

Look at the reviews online for the products. They will really help you and inform you of problems with the products. Some stores even have home theater components on display to allow you to hear them.

I'm not too familiar with retailers and sites that will deliver to the UK, so I can't really help you on that part.

Good luck!

Best surround sound speaker system under $500.00 for music?

Krazed Log

Don't even bother answering unless you know your stuff. (must have strong bass)

Answer
Best sound =/= strong bass. Good quality speakers provide quality sound across all sound frequencies.

Further, you don't make clear what your source will be, so do you have an audio receiver, and, if so, what kind, stereo, 5.1 HT, or 7.1 HT ?

That's crucial, as suggestions will vary quite a bit, depending on which kind of speaker system you want.

There are many good quality speaker brands that have gear in your price range. Among them are Infinity, Polk, JBL and Klipsch.

Now, if you wanted a 5.1 speaker system, you could get the following Polk speakers at Newegg:

A pair of New Monitor 65Ts towers for $320.
A pair of New Monitor 40 Series 2s for $120.
A center CS1 Series 2 for $70
A PSW10 subwoofer for $100.

OK, that's $610. If you really can't go over $500, then substitute New Monitor 45Bs for $170 instead of the tower 65Ts. That takes the package price down to $460.

does anyone have logitech speakers system for example as studio monitors?

Andy M

lets say the logitech z623 system. or any other company, satellite speakers and a sub.

Answer
Logitech speakers as studio monitors???

How hard do you want the legitimate audio community to laugh?

No serious knowledgeable person would even suggest,
let alone do, such a ridiculous thing.

Real studio monitors are large, full-range cabinets,
and shouldn't need or use subwoofers.

I gotta tell this joke to a friend of mine who used to be
in the sound and lighting business. It'll crack him up.

Need help selecting Speaker System for my Denon 7.1 channel receiver. Can use suggestions.?

GaryDenon

I have looked at both the ORB MOD2 Home Theater Speaker System and the BIC Acoustech Cinema Series 6 Speaker System. Anyone familiar with them? Would appreciate any and all suggestions. I want a great sounding system for both my dvd and cd systems.

Answer
Speakers are such a matter of personal preference, it's really hard to suggest what's best to someone. However, I have a Denon 3805 and use Boston Acoustics VR45's, VR20's, a Boston Center, PV600 sub, and it sounds fabulous. For the money, I think Boston & Infinity are great. Beware because there are alot of really bad speakers out there whose companies spend $$$ on advertising, so you think they must be great. The worst I have ever heard are Cambridge Soundworks. I don't know how these guys are in business. I would rather have 5 clock-radios around my living room!
Anyway, just go listen to some quality stuff at a BestBuy-Magnolia store, and a Tweeter store. Good Luck.
Oh, BTW, you can get some amazing deals on lightly used speakers on eBay. I got my sub & center speaker that way.

What kind of Speaker System?

Michael

I was given 4 really nice speakers and i dont have a way to hook them up to anything for music, tv, etc. i have 2 sub woofers and 2 mids. they have the older Black and and Red wires. I have no idea what to get for these and i need to know before Christmas because im broke!! Something that can have an iPod dock or be hooked into the tv as surround sound. PLEASE HELP!! I will try and put some pictures on but i cant promise. THANKS!!!! (i have the speakers obviously but i need a good system or thing that they all connect to. i dont know what its called oops..)

Answer
yes, a receiver is the thing. receiver that can do what's called 5.1 surround sound. yamaha and pioneer make entry level models for 230.00 dollars. simply put, you plug your boxes (game systems, cable/satellite box, dvd etc) into the receiver, you wire speaker outs with speaker wire (red and black) and you send the video out to the TV. it acts like a big switch, allowing you to listen to what ever you have plugged in.

if you have two subwoofers you might only be able to use one...

the receiver is a big black box, kinda heavy, sometimes with one or two large knobs and a screen to tell you what's playing and how loud it is. then you can buy a simple cable for the ipod, it has two different ends, one end plugs into the ipod and the other end has two plugs, one is red and one is white, these go in the back of the receiver and voila !!! kick butt sound from the ipod.

don't be afraid to spend on sound equipment, it's about the only electronics left where there's a huge difference between the best and the worst.

What speakers system goes best with a Yamaha RXV371?

Brett T

Answer
Well there are two things to look for, you want to buy speakers that work well with the amplifier electrically, and complement then sonically. First you want to buy speakers that are closely rated to 8ohm impedance as yamaha receivers don't like to drive very difficult impedance loads, especially below 4 ohms. All speakers impedance will vary depending on design, but in most cases speakers that are rated with a 8ohm impedance should be fine.

Second Yamaha receivers tend to be a bit on the bright side of neutral sonically, so you want speakers that will not emphasize the brightness in the high frequency's, like Klipsch for example. Bright and bright make a bad combination, and even more so in a room without a lot of damping.

There are a number of speakers that both are easy to drive and are more on the warmer side of neutral that will sound just fine with your Yamaha receiver.

Speakers like Vandersteen, (which by the way are a great value sound wise)

Wall mounted speakers for small restaurant? Wall mounted or very small receiver?

Looking in to buying a speaker system for music in a 400-500 sq. ft. restaurant front. Most custom restaurant systems are way too powerful and large for the room. I am considering running a home audio system but there's something a little tacky about that.

So, are there wall mounted speaker systems that don't require a subwoofer? That cover a wide spectrum of sound but don't need any extra punch? We don't need to crank the music and want to be space efficient.

Is there such an item as a cool looking wall mounted receiver? And how small do receiver systems get now? I've been out of the audio loop for a for a while.

Will run music with AirPlay on iPad. Need system to be as wireless as possible. Thanks!

(is this tl;dr material here? new to answers)

Answer
I own a restaurant, first thing you want to avoid is wireless. Why? Good question. Unless your router or internet connection can stay connected and work 100% 24/7 without need of reboot, okay then that's fine. But as we all know, these things need to be rebooted now and then and that will interrupt your service. It's just bad and embarrassing to have music stop in the middle of a song. Depending on how many speakers you want, best thing is just use in-wall ceiling speakers to have a more integrated look. Receiver can be hidden almost anywhere.

The truth is any plain speaker is fine. No one will notice how bad your stereo sounds or even how it looks. Well maybe if you have a fine dining restaurant then you want something more elegant and hidden, but most people will not care or even comment, except for what's on your playlist.

If full size sound is what you want, you really can't deny physics. Small speakers definitely will not provide that without a subwoofer. If in-wall ceiling speakers is out of the question, and bookshelf speakers is too large..Just off the top of my head, perhaps you can get a small set of PC speakers that uses a power outlet for power and just hook up the 3.5m directly to your iPad / Airplay? Then you won't need receiver.

In my restaurant I use 2 cheap outdoor-like speakers I cant even remember the brand. But they hook onto the wall with supplied brackets, hooked up through a old Onkyo integrated amp, playing through a ipod touch. Hope this info helps!

What are Good speakers for iPad and iPhone?

JLG

I want good speakers I can play my music and iheart radio on. I have a iPad and iPhone I will probably use my iPad more because it has more space on it for my music. Do you know of any good high quality speakers for Less that 100$. Thanks

Answer
I have been using the iMainGo XP for iPad and love it! There is also the iMainGo X and iMainGo 2, which are for iPod/iPhone/iTouch, etc. All of them are a solid speaker system with big sound, and protect your device. I love the duality of having a case that is also a speaker system. I work with them and their products are pretty impressive out of all the speaker systems I've used. The speakers are versatile and work with many other products, including Kindle, notebooks and portable gaming devices (you can even plug in a guitar!).

Check it out on Amazon: http://amzn.to/ritvtj (where you can also read the reviews).

GOOD LUCK!

Can a ipod or mp3 player be used to play over a household speaker system...instead of a "docking system"?

Vince S

Answer
There are different way that you can do this. First, you can get a portable FM transmitter, the manufacturer is Garvin they are made just for IPOD, what makes it portable is that it doesn't need outside power when you attach it to your IPOD it will use the power of your IPOD. Second, you can use a docking system that plugs audio R and L, and video. to a reciever or radio....doesn't matter anything that has RCA plugs. and it comes with a remote...some come with the menu that you see on your IPOD on the remote. Third is and AUX (auxilary) cable that is just one cable that goes from the IPOD to the radio. Remember no cool remote or portableness. My opinion I would do the one with the remote. I hope this was help-full and goodluck

Are There Any iPod Speaker Systems That Do Not Require Docking?

dankees98

I have a 6th Generation iPod Classic (80 GB) and a 3rd Generation iPod Shuffle and I am looking for a speaker system that I can leave in my room, which allows me to plug in my iPod with a wire and not by docking.

Can someone please point me in the right direction?

Thank you.

Answer
depends on what you want. if you can give up the alarm clock and stupid look of most docks then just use computer speakers. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Bose%26%23174%3B+-+Companion%26%23174%3B+2+Series+II+Multimedia+Speaker+System+%282-Piece%29/7933686.p?id=1151657980013&skuId=7933686&st=speakers something like this should sound a lot better than any dock. you can go cheaper or more expensive and get a 2.1 w/subwoofer for even better sound.

Desktop Build Help for Verification?

Q. I asked a question for desktop builds around 800$ and I picked this as best my answer, I just wanted to know if it is a good set up.

"i'll give you the basics. get an antec 300, tried and true for around 50 bucks. inexpensive socket 1155 motherboard, windows disk (or whatever), corei3 or g-series processor, cheap burner, samsung 256 gb ssd for around 200, 500 watt antec power supply (not too flashy but they work fine), 4 or 8 gb of memory, whatever costs less. then use the rest of your budget on the graphics card. you should have at least 200 bucks left based on your budget, so you could get anything between an amd 7850 down to a 7770. in any case, this shouldn't quite hit 800 dollars and i guarantee you this would run any game on the planet, most of them on ultra settings"

Answer
Not far off.
First you make a decision. Do you seek performance per dollar, or upgradability and future-proof to add into it over time? They give very different results. The second question is what is included in the $800?
CPU, CPU Cooler(overclocking only), Motherboard, DRAM Memory, bulk storage HDD, SSD supplement, Video Card, Sound Card (optional - on motherboard is usually good enough), Case and fans, Power Supply, Optical Drive, Monitor/display, Operating System (Windows), Keyboard, Mouse, audio output (amplified speakers and/or headset, power surge protector, wireless card (if you can't go ethernet direct).
What is excluded from the budget? People choose "Best Answer" missing parts going over budget to make the system work.
use http://pcpartpicker.com/
Core i3 (2nd or 3rd generation) = upgradable
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html
FX-4100 is top ended
Inexpensive motherboards or AMD builds could have PCIe as 2.0 dragging the newest GTx 6xx and HD 7xxx down to 2.0 as 6 to 10% GPU performance hit. SATA II vs SATA III is another performance hit on the HDD, USB 3.0? Rear, front+rear, or none, A spot for a 2nd GPU so you can add a 2nd card in crossfire/sli instead of just changing the card, more robust reliability?, there is FAST ethernet and Gigabit(faster) ethernet, audio upgrades, 2 DIMM slots or 4 DIMM. Maybe a decent motherboard is woth cutting bad a tad on graphics. A little money may buy a lot in motherboards. I don't typically prefer an H61 cheapo motherboard on an $800 build. That is for $600 and less. 8GB is better than 4, and heat spreaders and speed, and voltage of ram makes a difference. Maybe get 2 good 2GB and 2 open slots on the MB to add the rest later. A Pentium Gxxx will get you the motherboard as 1155, but it will bottleneck a GTX 560 and higher. Do you want to have to buy a new CPU in an upgrade of graphics? Do you want unstable higher frame rates, or stable lower frame rates?, and, power supplies make a difference. An underpowered system will drive you insane figuring out the instability. Cheap ones can destroy a system by voltage variations. And, it is not just wattage - 12V amps in a single rail is the real measure because 12V powers the CPU and graphics and fans and multiple split rails are unstable in many cases.

So, the answer you have, though generally not bad, is short of expert level.
Here is a $1068 after rebate build (optimized for UK priced parts):
http://pcpartpicker.com/p/lpog
Now, begin your downgrades, and every one should make you cringe and saddened a little that you don't have the $1100. You might cut the price by a different brand on some items without losing quality. Cut the Cpu cooler and make the i5 an i3 without overclock, and keep on cutting, item by item, and note you still need to add peripherals, and probably go windows 8. That is how the best you can do works. Start with a great more expensive build and get it to the money you can afford.

Speaker System ! whats a satellite speaker system?

hats.bats

why do they call it a satellite speaker!?

Answer
If you think of the earth and the satelittes that orbit it, the system is a lot like that. You have you main speakers up front, and then depending on make, etc. you have speakers set up around the room to boost the audio output. Mine has LF, LR, Center, SR, SL, BR, BL, and sub, for a total of 8 speakers. These speakers "orbit" , if you will, the main set of speakers to create a surround sound effect. Hence, they are like satellites off the earth.

It could also be said if you think of a business, that has it's main office in the city, and a smaller "satellite" office in country. It is not as big, but does some business there. Main office- main speakers (most of the workload). satellite office- satellite speakers (each one does a little to increase).

can i use different model # speakers for home theater receiver? (Samsung)?

Stephen Wo

I have a Samsung HT-Z310 5.1 CH Home Theater System. The other day one of the speakers(rear left) fell to the ground, and now the sound from that speaker is static-y. There is still sound coming from it but all the static messes up the surround sound of my system. Stores don't sell this exact product anymore. I called samsung and they want me to order a replacement speaker since its out of warranty; they want $65 for 1 speaker. My only other idea is to buy replacement speakers from ebay. The only ebay samsung home theater speakers i see on there are of the Samsung HT-Z320 system. can i buy the speakers from the HT-Z320 system and set them up with my HT-Z310 system(receiver)? Both systems are 1000W systems.

Also, if I can, would it be better just replacing the broken speaker with 1 of the Z320 speakers, or replacing all 5 speakers with all 5 new Z320 speakers? please help me thanks

Answer
You should probably replace the right and left rear speakers together, that would be the safest and easiest thing to do for good sound..if you think the new speakers have better sound then you would want to replace all 5...

Why does the Mute come on when I turn on my Home theater system?

marinedog8

I have a samsung home theater system ( HT-Z320 ) and for some reason when I turn it on and put a dvd in the mute comes on and the surround sound doesnt come on until I turn it off and then back on again. Is there something that keeps shutting if off?

Answer
You may have a speaker shorted - the system would shut down right away if that were true. Check every speaker wire connection at the speakers and at the home theater receiver. There may be a loose wire that is shorting across to the other wire.
