How do you connect an Ipod to a speaker system?

best speaker system for ipod image

jas2world

Is there some sort of cable you can buy that will let your Ipod play from any speaker system that has a headphone jack or other common jack?

Answer
If you have a component-style speaker system then you just need to go to an electronics store and buy a 3.5mm headphone to RCA chord - it had two "male" ends (one white, one red). You just plug the two ends into any place (phono or cd for example), set the stereo to it, and play the ipod.

If you have a shelf system (all-in-one set) then you need to look for inputs. These will usually be on the back of the stereo somewhere. They will most likely be RCA inputs, but occasionally they have headphone inputs. Get the right kind of chord and plug it in. To listen to the ipod, set your stereo to Aux input (short for auxiliary). If your shelf system does not have an Aux setting, then chances are you cannot play your ipod on it.

If you have a computer speaker system, then there should be a headphone chord included which you plug into your ipod and play from there. If you play and no sound is coming out of the speakers then try turning the volume on the ipod up.

I would recommend a 70v system. this will allow you to have many speakers connected to 1 amplifier. and you will be able to tune the volume at each of the speakers.

companies like TOA sell 70v speakers for indoor / outdoor , on wall or in wall mounting

I need a good sound system for a concert I'm planning. The concert is going to be in a high school gym. How much does one cost and can you recommend a good one?

Answer
Instead of buying a P.A. system (which can cost you on the cheap end $1500 for speakers, amps, mixer, cables, and mics) Your better off renting from a local sound company (check your phone book). Plus they will give you what you need for the show. Also you are not stuck with equipment that you might never use again. Beware gyms are not ment for concerts the sound will bounce off the walls and floors and will sound awful. Good Luck.

I want to start a talent show but don't know where I can have it.?

Would a local school let me use their stage? Any ideas would be appreciated.

Answer
A local school might. The local highschool in my area frequently rents out their auditorium to various dance studios for performances and such. The main questions would be, do you have to pay and can you use their sound and lighting equipment?

Additional options are large, outdoor spaces, but you would have to rent all of your own equipment, if you don't own it already. Erecting a temporary stage and large speakers for your audience to be able to hear are essential, not to mention being dependent on the weather.

If you're expecting a smaller audience, check out your local community center. In my area, renting a room is free as long as you're within scheduled hours and reserve ahead of time. Around here, we have a few small stages in some of the rooms.

Another good place would be a local banquet hall or meeting space. (EDIT: There are some centers that exist solely as a "Meeting Hall"-type thing.) I live in a somewhat rural area, but I was surprised to find some very near to me when I Googled it. Once more, if they don't already have a sort of stage, the temporary stage would be the way to go. Most of these spaces already have sound systems that come with the room rentals as well.

The final option is your local church, you don't necessarily have to attend. Go to a few of the larger ones; I guarantee you that they have some sort of stage/auditorium. The large one in my area has a stage in their gym. They might offer to rent it out for money and you may/may not need to provide your own sound and lighting equipment.

If you use any of the ways that involve a large monetary investment, make sure to do a little fundraising or maybe sell tickets to the event. (Especially if you donate the proceeds to a local charity, people will be more willing to give you their money.)

Good luck!

What is the best speaker system with good bass and is around $100-$200?

Meg

I'm looking to get a good speaker system for my boyfriend for his birthday. He is really into music and plays a lot off of his laptop. I would prefer something with quality bass.

Answer
Although that is a really nice gesture, your not going to get anything very good for that budget. Does he already have a reciever or integrated ampliifer ? If not and your needing to just play music off his laptop, the best thing to get him if your really determined to buy him speakers at that price range would be to get a pair of powered studio monitors. They have there own amplifier built in, is designed to drive the speakers properly, and they are designed to be very efficent and play pretty loud when needed.

Forget about trying to get speakers with real low bass, your better off getting speakers that have good qualiity of bass and then he can add a subwoofer later to supplement the lack of low bass they may have.

The best buy in speakers are the Tannoy 501a but they are little above you budget at $308 a pair or $154.99 each. Fostex PMO.4n arent to bad, at $199 a pair.

I'm looking for a sound system that has an digital optical input so i can connect it to my PS3. Price range between $50-150.

Answer
Try to get a Cambridge Soundworks DTT 3500.

You can find it cheaply on ebay. This set once cost over $700, and is by far the best system you can get for the money now.

If you buy a surround set for $50-150, you will have a small plastic subwoofer and tiny speakers with extremely tinny sound.

The DTT 3500 has an enormous wooden Sub.
Just turn the volume up on this thing, insert "The Matrix" and play the Lobby scene (you know, where the guard asks for "Backup. We need Backup!", and the soldier screams "Freeze!" and then hell breaks loose).

Then take the Sub to your bathroom and use it as a hairdryer.

The DTT3500 will blow you away (in the truest sense of the word) in this price segment.

I am in AP European History and I need to present a power point with some events and what not. I am having a tough time with my research so anything helps!

Answer
One major event is the construction of the Berlin Wall and people killed trying to cross it during the period. You can seek more detail than this to learn:
http://history1900s.about.com/od/1960s/qt/berlinwall.htm

The Beatles music group actually had a major social impact, and you can research more on them in Europe.
In Africa the 1960s was a period of radical political change as 32 countries gained independence from their European colonial rulers.
So it was the ending of colonialism. You can research events occuring within Europe about this in the period, such as Portugese Colonial War, and Algerian War with France.

Britain and South Africa

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Vatican_Council

If the Soviets are counted as Europe, and at the time it was, there were major US-Soviet conflicts such that you can include the Bay of Pigs and Cuban Missile Crisis that had a global impact as a fear of the end of the world and a WW3 to include all of Europe.
Assassinations:
May 27, 1963 - Grigoris Lambrakis, Greek left-wing MP by far-right extremists with connections to the police and the army in Thessaloniki
One can ask about the impact of the Kennedy assassination in Europe as a global event.

1962 â First trans-Atlantic satellite broadcast via the Telstar satellite
1963 Belgium:
The language boundaries dividing Belgium into two major monolingual parts, a Dutch speaking Flanders in the North and a French Speaking Wallonia in the South are fixed and the boundaries of the administrative sections (provinces and municipalities) are adjusted accordingly. Brussels becomes officially bilingual (French-Dutch) and six municipalities bordering the Capital belong to Flanders but obtain facilities for French-speakers.

Protests in Denmark against nuclear weapons, should have also occurred through much of Europe.
1963 Italy - Education reform:
Education reforms of the Italian school system, from elementary school to upper secondary education (gymnasium). The gymnasium and technical schools were made more accessible to the masses of Italian society. The result was an increasing rush to the universities especially among people from the middle class.

Yugoslavia: 07.04.1963 A new constitution is proclaimed. Yugoslavia is defined as a âSocialist federative republic.â The right to âself-managementâ is now universal.

1963
France and West Germany sign treaty of cooperation ending four centuries of conflict (Jan. 22).
U.K.'s Profumo scandal (June).

Completed.

I was tasked to recommend a sound system for our gymnasium.Any Ideas as to what design and product I can use?

kitt

The design entails what speakers to use, amplifiers, sound mixers, microphones, etc. how do you interconnect these with each other?

Answer
The previous contributor is right in saying that gyms pose special challenges.

It all depends how deep you want to go.

I do not recommend the Fender at all. It will do the job, but that is about all. It is designed for mobile guitarists and such playing in small bars.

You could put wall or ceiling mount speakers throughout the hall. This means that the people near the front do not go deaf from being exposed to very high volume while those at the back think they are deaf because it's still not loud enough for them.

If you are doing just speeches, the ceiling/wall mount speakers will do fine and will minimize the echo issue.

If you are finding it hard to understand what people are saying there are special systems done by JBL, among other that have "intelligibility" processors. These are basically compressor/limiters to equalize the levels with different speakers who may not speak very well into the mike. They also use a "parametric eq effect" meaning they boost frequencies that are different between words, while cutting frequencies (mostly bass) that are present in all words.

If echo does become an issue then you need a digital delay processor. This will mean the speaker at the front will get the sound later than the ones at the rear.

FOR A DIGITAL DELAY PROCESSOR TO WORK ALL SPEAKERS MUST MUST MUST BE POINTING IN THE SAME DIRECTION.

Behringer do The Shark. This will also prevent feedback and is a nifty unit. However when it does prevent feedback the sound becomes unuseable and you will need an operator to correct both the speaker's technique and reset the unit. It does not prevent feedback in a way that you can just turn it on and forget it.

The benefit is though that feedback damages speakers and humans. Feedback is a major mystery source of high frequency hearing loss. Each encounter damages the hearing only minimally, but it clocks up eventually.

If you go for lots of ceiling speakers, you will need to use 70v line (or in some countries, it's 100v line...same idea). Explanation here http://www.epanorama.net/documents/audio/70volt.html

However 70v line is not suited to music or theatre.

Hope all this helps.

Computer Speakers or Home Theater System?

riceandnoo

I'm planning to buy a 40 Inch LCD TV for my living room and planning to use it as a monitor for my computer and PS3. I'm also planning to get a set of Logitech Z5500 speakers as my speaker system for all 3. Would it be possible to connect them all to the speakers or would it be better to get a Home Theater System?

Answer
Here is the deal. Picture a yardstick in your mind. At one end is total junk. At the other end is sound nirvana. Computer speakers go from half an inch up to 2 inches. HTIB from one inch up to 9 inches. Separate components from 6 inches up to a foot and a half. And high end audio equipment from 1 foot to 3 feet.

In general you get what you pay for. Home Theater systems cost a lot more but you get a lot more. Sure it is possible to connect computer speakers to the equipment you are going to get with the proper adapters, but you will not have good sound with computer speakers.

But I want to know what to do with laptop.
I have budget of $500.
Please teach me.
what do you mean by extend audio adapter and speaker channels? And do you have any recommendation for the brand and model?

I need a sound system that can heard for the entire auditorium size hall.
Thank you.

Answer
Plug into the laptop where headphones are plugged in. 3.5mm diameter stereo plug, tip, ring sleeve connection for left and right channels.
If you wish multiple channels, you need an external audio adapter that uses software and a USB connection to make 3.1, 5.1 or better sound. They aren't expensive.

I use a microlab 5.1 speaker system. How can I increase its bass output provided that the treble remians undisturbed.Do I use any software or just use a graphic equalizer. If its an equalizer then please tell me the proper way to use it.

Answer
You've only got about 30 watts to work with on that sub, and that's probably stretching it (they don't give a distortion spec with the wattage...which makes that number basically useless).

You could use an eq in your audio playback program and get a bit more out of it, boosting the lows a few dB. But don't expect anything very significant. More bass requires more power....there's no free lunch.

How many watts do I need for a speaker set to have enough bass to shake one room a little. I want some speakers that has a lot of bass and will shake the ground a good amount. I want to fell the bass but as we'll I want the audio and bass to be clear. The type of speakers I'm looking for is a 5.1 surround speakers with one or more sups to it. I was thinking about getting the Logitech speaker system Z906. But I was not sure if this would have enough bass for me. And I was wondering about the beatbox from Dr. Dre. Not the mini portable beatbox but the big one that he has that cost 399.00 $ it's on sale for 250.00 $ at his official site. But I was wondering if his beat box was any good. Thanks for everyone who writes an answer of this question!

Answer
Contrary to popular belief, watts doesn't tell you much about how much acoustic output an audio system has. To produce bass, you have to move a lot of air which means you need large woofers with a lot of cone surface area. You're not going to get earth shaking bass with anything from Logitech or similar. For this you need a real system, not a toy like Logitech.

Find yourself a receiver with preamp outputs so you can use external amplifiers for the main speakers. To keep the budget low (although still far higher than Logitech) you could go with something like this NAD... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=NAT748 Then add something like this Emotiva amplifier for the left/right/center... http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/xpa-3 Then add some budget left/right main speakers like these... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBX6 and a center... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBXCE and surrounds... http://www.audioadvisor.com/prodinfo.asp?number=MRBBXFX and a subwoofer... http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/vtf-15h.html

The above example is entry level, it's a system that would be pretty good for the money. If you really want something good, it's going to be a lot more. There are things between this and the Logitech, but don't buy any system that is an all in one package, instead buy individual components. If you are good with tools maybe you can consider building your own... subwoofers especially if you get a kit is really easy... http://www.parts-express.com/cat/subwoofer-system-kits/287

How loud should I set my rear surrounded speakers?

I have a Logitech Z906 speaker system. Whenever I set my rear speakers either they're too low or too loud that I can't hear the front dialogue speakers. How can I set it to that 'just right' volume?

Answer
You can get a sound DB meter from radio shack or other electronics stores and use that to set up your speakers using the meter in a fixed location you set up all speakers to put out thye same level, you need some kind of program or disk that will generate a pink noise or white noise sound into each speaker in turn so they can be adjusted equally....

I want to install a 7.1 channel speaker system in my condo. This would include 7 speakers mounted in the ceiling and a flat screen tv mounted on the wall. I want to know if this will increase the resale value of my condo very much in the midwest. Will the resale value increase the same or more than the amount I put into the system?

Answer
In this dismal market, I would have to agree with lahn. It may not help much at appraisal time, but when there's 5 houses on your block for sale, and you have a nice theater, you have a leg up on the others. You might get a higher offer, you might be more likely to sell.

We completed a home automation system for a client that wanted to sell last spring. There were 12 homes for sale in their neighborhood the day they put theirs on the market. Two days later they had a decent offer and 3 days after that, they opened escrow. All the houses were nice, several had pools, only one was automated.

What computer speakers are the best for their price?

Zachhhhhhh

first off, i will use speakers, mainly for my computer/ipod with ROCK music, so they need a headphone jack and they need to sound VERRYYY good! ok now i was thinking of getting the bose Companion® 5 multimedia speaker system for $399 but everyone online is saying other people make basically the same sounding thing for half the price. i just want a very very good speaker system and yes it can be pricey. please just inform me on what the best speakers are.

Answer
Best speakers for your computer/ iPod music use would be a pair of good monitor speakers - especially if space is not a concern.
Monitors/ pro monitors are made for accurate sound reproduction: used by musicians, dj-mixing artists, guitarists, etc ; to achieve *accurate* representation of what they are producing/ recording...
To them, high quality sound fidelity is their focus.
And ONLY Pro Monitor style active speakers can live up to this task... These active speakers all have dedicated tweeters and decent sized woofers: anywhere from 4" to 8" that are mostly made of a type of carbon fiber or aluminum.
These speakers are always powered buy multiple integrated amps: one for each driver: so in a 2.0 monitor system, there are usually 4amps total: two inside each speaker.

So what can these Monitor speakers do for you??
Well, you asked for best: for music, a good speaker system will reproduce your recordings/ music with 100%(or close to) accuracy: and give you what the original artist:singer:recording studio INTENDED For you to hear.: their music.

Lesser systems won't and can't do this because they do not have the dedicated tweeters, multiple amps, quality drivers, or components.

And best of all is that: although these types of speakers are not well known to the general public, and is a smaller market vs the consumer end audio... There are still lots of brands/options; which means that the prices are controlled by "competition".
Bottom line is that you get quality, accuracy, fidelity for fair prices- similar or even lower than the Bose companion5: Which is in comparison is inaccurate, bloated, fatiguing, bad build/material quality, etc- I can go on and on-- but one note I cannot miss is that these $400 speakers do NOT have any dedicated TWEETERS!wow.

Look at speakers that are sold in music stores, guitar shops etc.
Notable brands:
Krk
M-audio
Genelec
Yamaha
Tannoy
Mackie
Etc...
Their prices/sizes range quite a bit... They are also available at amazon.com.

Hope this helps!

Will a Bose Acoustimass 3 Speaker System work with an MP3 player/iPad?

What I mean is, does it have a jack that I can plug into an MP3 player or an iPad? You know, the kind of common jack you find on the end of most headphones or earbuds. I don't know what it's called, but I'd like to know before I buy a $200 speaker system and find out I can't use it.

Answer
M advice would be to take the MP3 player and ipad to see if it does. It may or may not, Bose is not an open source system. I would think you can plug into the aux input on the volume dial and all is well, that is how it should be. Save yourself the headache and go through the trouble of connecting the devices and see for yourself. That would be your best bet.

Best.

How do I integrate and install wireless speakers onto a patio to use with my existing home surround sound?

Bob

The patio is 25 yards away from the house, and I have a small wifi connection from that location when I tested it. The download strength from speedtest.net was .46mbps. The current system is a Denon AVR-3803. What is the best way to add the wireless speakers, and can I control the whole sound system with an ipad? Thanks

Answer
First you would find a wireless speaker system that had that distance rating, which wont be too tough considering they are usually atleasts 150 foot range, for your pad to be used as a remote control you will need to download a remote control application from the app store. 2 that I found pretty cool are "I got control" app which is free , you will need to get an ir blaster that connects to your ipad for around 50 bucks( available at radio shack store or online, the other option is the "dijit" app which is also a free application, you will also need the adapter that hooks to your ipad, and for this app it is around 70 bucks, but it looks very cool and promises to be able to control almost any remote controlled device, I suggest downloading them both considering they are free and pick the one you like best before spending the money on any of the hardware that is required, unfortunately there is no way around getting additional hardware to make your ipad to work as a remote mainly because it does not send or receive infra red signal

Or does the speaker system need to be plugged directly into my 360? My 360's connected to my TV via HDMI, if that make a difference.

Answer
Assuming your surround sound has optical input the best connection would be xbox to TV via HDMI and xbox to surround sound via optical cable

what is the best device to connect multiple audio sources to a speaker system.?

Krishna R

I want to connect all my audio sources 1. TV. 2. DVD 3. XBOX 4. MP3 player to one speaker system. what is the best way to connect with using my TV out or a amplifier?

Answer
i would say that you buy a reciever. that would solve the first 3, then i just bought a cord from radio shack that was around $8 that connects your l&r audio jacks to a headphone plug. i had the same problem and that seems to work for me and it wasnt too expensive...they may make recievers now with an mp3 player jack but im not sure.

What are some great high sound quality stereo systems for parties?

I'm having a huge get together party for spring. I'm looking for a good speaker sound quality stereo system that will play really loud but high quality sound. That also can connect to my ipod. I had allot of stereos in my life that plays very loud. Although, It was just always something. Every time the stereo would play loud the music will crackle, sound muddy, and just sound low quality!

Answer
You really should consider a couple of DJ/PA type speakers. They are designed to play loud music for a long time. If you can spare $500 or so, 2 of these will work great:

Those are powered speakers so you can connect an ipod directly to the with a standard 3.5mm to RCA cable.

If your budget allows, there are even better powered speakers.

Any good quality outdoor speakers or sound system with audio output?

Mauricio

I have been trying to find outdoor speakers or sound system with audio output for a month. Since i haven't been able to find anything could someone help.

Answer
Your question is confusing - and this is why you haven't gotten any answers for the past 12 hours. Speakers, by their nature do not have outputs, only an input. Active, or powered, speakers may sometimes have an output to enable other speakers to be hooked up - "daisy chaining."

An entire audio system will have all kinds of outputs, line level, speaker level and on modern equipment, digital outputs.

I have to wonder what exactly you are trying to do. Perhaps you are confusing outputs with inputs - a common cause of bewilderment.

If you can provide more details, it will be possible to give a decent answer.

Is it possible to have a home theatre subwoofer connected to a Logitech 5.1 computer sound system?

I know that a home theatre subwoofer only uses one connection where as the custom logitech 5.1 speaker system sub has the 5 speakers that connect to it. i was wondering if there was some type of adapter that could take the 5 leads from the logitech speakers and narrow them down to one lead (like the home theatre system), and connect it to a home theatre sub. there probably isn't but i was just wonderin. cheers

Answer
No, you do not want to do that. The sub has a dedicated output from a stereo receiver/amp and if you try to split a signal from another cable it won't work. You will blow the sub if you try to do what you are suggesting. That Logitech system is designed to work only with their speaker system and they have a special cable that will transmit the correct signal to their sub,

How do I get the sound from my computer to play through external speakers while using an HDMI cable for the TV?

First sorry the title was so long...anyway; I'm using an HP laptop connected to my flat screen via an HDMI cable connected directly into both the tv and computers HDMI ports. I have a Logitech 5:1 speaker system that plugs into my computers headphone outlet that I want to use as surround sound instead of the factory tv speakers. Is there any way i can make this work?

Answer
right click n the speaker icon and press playback devices, on the window that pops up, there should be ur laptop speakers, the tv speakers and the external speakers, just set those as default and ull be fine

What are the top brands of the home theater systems on the market?

I am not talking about home theater - in -a box (pre-boxed) systems like sony or panasonic that are usually under $500.

I am talking about the ones you usually put all the components together yourself. I have zero knowledge as to who makes the best home theaters systems.

It would great if you list down several brands and top websites that sell them.

Answer
You should probably check out Amazon (link below) for most of these, as they offer free shipping on most AV receivers and can generally take $100 or more off the price of a receiver. I actually spoke with an AV pro at Circuit City the other day, and here were his feelings on receivers:

Top of the line: Denon (and some Sony's). They just make the highest quality receivers that are capable of doing pretty much anything you want. However, he did forewarn me (and I believe it) that setting up a Denon system is not for the faint of heart of the inexperienced. He said he's seen people struggle with it for days before calling in an expert.

Pretty good: Yamaha and Onkyo (and Harmon Kardon). Both make similar style receivers that are fairly (moderately) intuitive to set up. I know Onkyo provides a microphone that is supposed to optimize the sound quality and the point where you put the mike. I don't think Yamaha's have that on their mid-range receivers.

After that: Sherwood and other makers. Just not the kind of product you want to buy if you're looking for quality. These are more of the "just-scraping-by" style recievers. I'd spend the little extra to make sure you got a quality product that will last you more than a year or two.

For someone who's just looking to get into the market (which it sounds like you are), you may want to look at the Onkyo TX-SR605 style reciever. It has up-converstion, meaning that you can run one single HDMI cable to your HDTV, and all other video signals will be formatted to work. It has 2 HDMI inputs, 3 component video inputs, and 4 digital audio inputs, which should be plenty to last a while. The set up is fairly obvious on the entire receiver and provides plenty of power to the speakers. Most importantly, you can find it (right now) for $400-$500 USD at several retail outlets, including Amazon. A great receiver if you're just getting into them.

Also, speakers are a different subject. You don't want the brands I listed above, you want to look into Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Bose and JBL, to name a few. The sound quality and speaker make up will be much better and last longer. You want a cone (the part that makes the sound) that is not paper, but ceramic, plastic and/or part titanium.

Hope this helps! Check out the link below Amazon (CNET) for more comprehensive reviews of everything you're looking for.

What components do i need to get a good quality system to play my mp3 player and laptop on?

Xan Varcoe

eg, an amplifier, a Receiver, separately bought speakers etc. I don't know what role each part plays so i don't have clue which parts i would need. An example set up costing under £300/$450 would be helpful.
