John

Ive been looking for a cord to connect my apple tv 2 to my speakers that have a headphone-like jack for the input. I've heard it's supposed to be a toslink cable from the apple tv but how would I connect it to these speakers?

Answer
You would have to run it through a receiver if you don't have HMDI or optical on those speakers. The AppleTV is designed to hook up to a home theater system, not a pair of standalone speakers.

how can i listen to ipad's contents through surround sound system connected to tv using apple tv?

tortilla2g

I was able to configure apple tv and can play music from my library and mirror ipad/ipod through my tv. My tv is connected to a receiver via hdmi cable (hdmi 1) and then to my surround sound speakers. I have to connect apple tv to another hdmi port (hdmi 2). so how can i listen to apple tv through my surround sound speakers?

Answer
All of your devices (cable box, dvd player, apple tv, etc) should be plugged into the receiver via HDMI inputs, then the HDMI output of the receiver should go to the TV. If you configure it like this, then you can easily switch between your various sources on your receiver and it will send the video to the TV and audio to the speakers.

Can anyone help me. I want to buy a home theatre speaker system that gives the best sound quality.

Answer
I don't think you mean the absolute best. However what sound you get is dependent on your budget.

A good entry level system can run a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.

High end systems can easily reach several hundred thousand.

So really you need to be more specific in your application, budget, expectations,etc.. to really get a good idea of what to get.

im puttin a stereo in my uncles house an he wants 2 eliminate as much cuttin into the wall as possible we were wondering is there any wireless speakers ... an wireless systems besides sonos an linksys systems .... he wants 2 put 8 or 9 zones with 2-4 speakers in each zone an then he wants his 7.1 dolby digital home thearter hooked up 2 it.... is there any way to do this all wirelessly

Answer
There are plenty of solutions for wireless speakers - just google it.
However, they still need to access power for the wireless receiver.

For multiple zones, you also need an audio distribution system. It may be a challenge to have all of them wireless. Depends on distance from the receiver and how many "channels" will be available so that you don't have interference.

I am having a party and want my music to play all over the house. What sort of system should I look for?

Q.Latifah

Do I want to search for home theater system, wireless speakers, or home audio system? What is best for this? How many speakers should I look for in the system? Also, I have an ipod, but even if it doesn't have a dock or a usb port, I have an adapter for my current stereo, so that's not the biggest factor. Advice?

Answer
It all depends on budget and what you really want. If you want to have audio throughout the whole house and not confined to only one room you need to look at a mulitizone audio system. These systems will allow you to connect speakers in different rooms to one stereo and connect different source (ie ipod, cd, cable box) to listen too. There are some considerations, can you run cables? These systems require speaker wires and usually control wires. Each room can operate independently from each other or as part of a group. The links below are for systems that I recommend researching. Both the sonos system and the control 4 system can be installed in a wireless fashion, sonos is strictly for music, while the control 4 moves into home automation.

I have a new, Sony PS-LX250H turntable and was wondering if I could hook it up to a powered speaker system (like a home theater system). The turntable only has the two RCA outputs (red and white), and the speaker system has inputs two RCA inputs on the back, as well as a volume knob. I'm just wondering if I can forgo purchasing a receiver or not.

Answer
yup, go to radio shack and they will give you the wires you need to connect. or go to best buy. Good luck

If i where to buy Professional speakers what would i need?

Aaron

Say if I where to by the B&W 800 Diamond what would I need. I know that you need;
Amps (Very High Quality)
Processor
Cables
Sources

But would you need an Pre Amp and why is it essential if I want the best speaker system. Also how would you set it up.

5 STARS FOR BEST ANSWER.

Answer
Would you want to purchase a very expensive sports car and then use the cheap gas on it and dive it at no more than 65 mph. If you want to listening to high quality speakers then you need high quality power amplifier to drive them, you also need a pre amp to connect your high end CD player or turntable. Go to a high end retail store and look. For a high end system like the 800, CD player, power amplifier and a pre amplifier you would be looking at around $ 30,000. Hope this will help you out.

What are the average decibel levels of sony or any other popular stereo brand from 70's and 80's compared to modern stereos? I'm doing a research paper comparing old stereo systems to new ones and seeing if there is an increase in hearing damage in youth. I don't need to compare at what level they are listening to it at, I need some stats to back up some research. some numbers.

Answer
Unclipped music shouldn't hurt your hearing until insane volumes. Low notes such as bass notes RARELY cause any permanent damage until above the 160db level for extended periods of time; however, the higher frequencies, about 150hz up can cause permanent damage at much lower levels. Clipped music is very dangerous for everything involved, from speakers and amps to the person who hears it. That is why sitting at a rock concert in front of huge speakers playing clipped guitars will hurt your ears and impair your hearing for far longer than a quality pair of headphones playing the studio version of the same song at the same volume. In terms of car audio, the volumes over the past 40 years have become far greater. The fact is I couldn't give you raw numbers even if we had them, because the tools used to measure them are far more accurate now then they were even ten years ago, let alone 30. However I feel safe to say that considering 3 db is about twice as loud, we must be at least a hundred times louder than we were then, probably more. Sorry but finding raw numbers from today is easy, finding them from the 70's is very doubtful. I will say that, due to the fact that our newer head units with cds are far better quality and less likely to be clipped than old 8 tracks, there is a good chance that the difference in hearing damage is minimal, regardless of far higher volumes.
By the way, this article might help you some, or at least make you appreciate car audio more.

Is the Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 from the movie 2 fast 2 furious a Tommy Kraira or a MINE'S?

BlackLight

i know the car is an GT-R R34 but is it a Tommy Kraira or a MINE'S

Answer
stock version.

No car has quite the same reputation as Nissan's Skyline GT-R. It's not officially sold in the United States, barely qualifies as compact, and is built with its steering wheel on the wrong side, but the all-wheel-drive, sequentially twin-turbocharged Skyline GT-R has managed to become a legend in America. That the producers of "2 Fast 2 Furious" ("2F2F") recognized that is at least somewhat encouraging--isn't it?

The Skylines used during filming were all R34s, a model introduced way back in 1998. Like other Skylines, the R34 is powered by a RB26DETT 2.6-liter, DOHC, 24-valve straight six sitting longitudinally in the engine bay that's force fed by twin turbos and rated at a laughingly low 280 hp. The R34's engine feeds a six-speed Getrag gearbox that in turn sends power to the ATTESA all-wheel-drive system, which electronically varies the torque split.

1999 Nissan Skyline Gtr R34 Rear Side View

Super HICAS four-wheel steering is also aboard and includes an electronic feedback control system to ensure precise wheel positioning under extreme circumstances. But the big change for the R34 from previous Skylines was a stiffened body shell and fresh aerodynamic design. This car has carbon-fiber under-car diffusers and a new rear wing.

In fact, the Skyline R34 is such an effective piece of technology, it was too good for movie work. All-wheel-drive supercars are quick and amazing to drive, but they're absolutely nonchalant about their work. It takes a rear-quarter hit by an out-of-control country squire to get an R34's tail to swing out dramatically, and burnouts are tough in a car with more traction than a Caterpillar D9. So the 2F2F transportation department excised the front driveshaft and disabled the Skyline's four-wheel steering so it could misbehave like a regular car.

1999 Nissan Skyline Gtr R34 Engine View

For its appearance on camera, the Skyline was encrusted within a C-West body kit, drenched in House of Kolor's platinum pearl paint and treated to a set of 19-inch HRE 446 polished wheels inside Toyo Proxes T1-S tires. Inside, the front passenger seat was ditched in favor of not one, not two, but three nitrous bottles--none of which are actually plumbed into the engine. Also thrown in is a Clarion head unit with LCD TV screen, a big JBL amp and Infinity speakers that actually seem to work. Of course, it also carries a bunch of blue neon and spits blue flame from its exhaust system.

As one of the two cars driven by too-pretty-for-a-guy hero Officer Brian O'Conner (Paul Walker), the Skyline, according to transportation coordinator Ted Moser, has 505 hp on tap and a hoarking 444 lb-ft of torque. In that "2F2F" alternate universe, that means this car rockets to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds, consumes the quarter-mile in 12.1 seconds and has a top speed of 180 mph. Back on the actual planet Earth, the performance is still strong, but not quite as strong as fresher, intact R34s we've driven.

With Josh Jacquot doing his suave Paul Walker imitation, the Skyline, which is bone stock under the hood, groped its way through the quarter in 14.1 seconds at 101 mph--the third quickest car of the six included in this movie car test. With 22,254 km (13,797 miles) on its odometer, this car wasn't old, but it definitely had been beaten up pretty determinedly. Power output seemed down from other R34s, but a direct comparison is tough since the other R34s had the advantage of all-wheel-drive launches and didn't need a feathery throttle down the track. This car literally smoked its rear tires on every 1-2 upshift, which was cool to watch but certainly added time to each run. Its performance is also sabotaged by its big diameter wheels and the added heft of all the add-ons. The last stock R34 we drove hit 60 mph in just 5.07 seconds and crushed the quarter mile in 13.3 seconds at 103.7 mph.

1999 Nissan Skyline Gtr R34 Front Interior View

The lack of AWD and 4WS knocked the movie Skyline's performance to 0.91g on the skidpad, although we expected worse. The missing front differentials made the car much easier to drift, which is of course, the point, and we have to admit the car looked great doing it.

As for the brakes, they remain stock all around, and the ABS is intact. From 60 mph, this car stopped in 127 ft. Again, not a terrible performance, but not exactly what we've come to expect from a Skyline GT-R.

Overall, the Skyline turned out to be one of the better running and better sorted of the six cars. The driver's seat is a Sparco Milano and the additional gauges are HKS products."It's not too bad," Josh reported after his quarter-mile runs. "Now we know how a rear-wheel-drive R34 performs."

YEAUH!

I have a Vizio 26" from 2007, an Xbox 360, and a HP 50-watt 2.1 speaker system. How do I mesh all these things together to get an awesome sound experience?

Answer
It all depends on what kind of inputs and outputs are on the speakers and TV.

I recommend getting something of an RCA adapter for your speakers if you don't already have one and connect your XBOX 360's audio directly into the speakers and connect the video directly into the TV.

If you need help, I suggest going to your nearest electronics store. They should be able to help you :)

Should all the speakers on a home theater system emit sounds?

Synergy9

I have the Coby 5.1 Channel home theater speaker system. I hooked it up but I only hear sound from the front left and front right speakers. Should I be hearing sound from the center and surround left and right speakers as well?

Answer
all depends on what settings are on. there should be a button on the actual reciever and the remote to switch the different types of sound that could be played and what speakers are to be used. ALTHOUGH, the reason you may have all of the speakers activated and you only hear audio from the from front left, middle, and front right, is because the channel or movie that you are playing does not have 5.1 audio. meaning only the front will work and possibly the back but it will play the exact same audio as the front only a lot quieter. every movie is now made at least 5.1 so no worries with that. television channels do not ALL include 5.1, but some may!

hope that helped a little!

What is a good inexpensive home theater speaker system ?

Mr. X

I'm just looking for an inexpensive home theater speakers from my 32'' Toshiba 1080p tv. I don't want to spend big bucks on one but something decent would be good. Know of any inexpensive speaker systems ?

I wouldn't be buying one If the sound on my tv was good, but when it comes to watching movies it's somewhat low and not very immersive.

Thanks

Answer
soundbars aren't true surround, don't get one of those.

This is sufficient for most people:

I have an Onkyo home theater in the box that I purchased 5-6 years ago. It's in a 10x12 room and it is LOUD and very decent.

Can you connect a surround sound speaker system to an LG M2232D TV?

John

I was wandering if I would be able to use a surround sound speaker system with this make/model of TV?

Answer
No. You can not connect any speakers to a tv. TV today does not have any speaker terminals for you to connect any speakers. The only audio output it provides is through an optical audio output. It is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a AVR, Home theater in a box with an optical audio input or a sound bar only. Hope this will help you out.

How to build or where to buy my dream home audio system?

Angela

At minimum I'd love to have an mp3-based system independent of our PC, accessible from at least one room in the house, and wired or wireless to a speaker system in every room in the house. Each speaker can be turned on or off according to which room(s) I'd like to hear the audio in.

My ultimate dream would include a wall-mounted mp3-type base unit in every room, and from each base unit I could also control which speakers in the house are playing.

Answer
You need to go to a high end audo store and tell them what you need. They will design and install a system for you.
My buddy just built a home with a system like that. It is pretty cool. I kind of wish I would of done that when I built my house.

i want a speaker system that will pump out some major bass but i dont want the music to be drowned out by it. I still want to be able to understand whats being said
for a car.......

Answer
There is a reason why subs are called subs and mids called mids and highs called highs.

If you want to build a system correctly and you want good bass WITHOUT distrotion then you have to have a bass speaker only do bass. I know everyone is going to say no but is been done this MANY times in the past of putting an AMP on the factory radio and speakers and adding a sub with sub AMP is the most inexpensive way to go and it sounds GOOD. Wont win any contest for SPL of clarity but for the money and just starting out this is a super easy way to go. NOW there are some stipulations to this: 1. Factory speakers do not need to be any more than 6mos to a year old. 2. speakers can not be amplified say like a BOSE system. Most of those have 1 OHM speakers in them anyway. 3. Radio sometimes radio can not have pre-amp out put for speakers. The voltage is to low and an aftermarket amp will not work well with it.

I have a NEW 2008 Toy Taco that I plan on putting a 4 channel amp in to run the whole system. 2 channel, left and right, to run front and rear speakers putting left speakers and right speakers together to make 2 ohm so the amp will run harper on 2 channels. On the other side it will be only the sub bridged at 4 ohms. Both sides will have crossovers so only mids and highs go to factory speakers and the other side will be set to low/sub so only bass goes to sub woofer. I dont think they make a dash kit for my veh so i will be using the factory radio also. Right now if you turn the volume up you can hear the bass coming thru the mids distorting the sound even with bass almost all the way down.

now it also depends on what type of veh you have to know what type of sub you need. Bandpass or basstube does not always work on all vehs.

Well that was kind of long but figured I would explain in full my thought process. Hope it helps. Good luck.

Oh and I have been doing alarms, audio and video in vehs for about 15 years.

What speakers are loud and good for parties?

I live in a fraternity house im also a dj and at our last party the speakers blew but luckily not all of them. They were old and crappy anyways, im looking for a whole new speaker system for the house, maybe like 5 speakers(3 for inside and 2 for outside), an amp/receiver, and a subwoofer. but im not trying to spend 1000 bucks so something cheap but that give good quality sound, can be turned up LOUD(like yell over music loud), and that are tough and long lasting id rather spend more money on loud, quality sound that lasts for years than some distorted crappy sounding speakers just because theyre easy on my wallet

What number speakers are needed 5.1 or recent 7.1? Is it better to go with "all-in-one" system like Bose or mix and match with specific receiver and speaker system?

Answer
This depends on you and your environment. 5.1 does fine for most but 7.1 will be more emersive. All in one systems never match up to separates but are less expensive ( aside from Bose) If you want a system in the Bose price range look for the Energy "Classic" Take 5 system. This was called the "Bose Killer" a few years ago. It used to be $900 for the speaker system w/sub but was recently rereleased at about $500 and still hold up very well. At the time when I worked at the good guys! in the audio department 9 out of 10 people who came in asking for Bose when they came in bought the Take 5 after listening to both. You can get a fully featured receiver to go with it for about $500. The Sony STRDG910 gets good reviews. This would make a great starter system and includes great Blu-Ray connectivity. If you want to spend a little more look into Denon or Yamaha receivers and better Energy, Paradigm or Definitive Technology speakers.
I think what "He Who" means is that Dolby Digital is the standard audio format for HD broadcast. It isn't all 5.1 necesarily. It can be 5.1, 4.0, 2.0 or even 1.0 (unlikely but is a possibility with Dolby Digital.) DVDs go up to 6.1 and BD movies up to 7.1.

Hey all. I currently am using an Altec lansing speaker system. (2 monitors with mids attatched and a sub). I recently found 2 speakers in my basement I wanted to integrate into the system. They are bostons and they have the +/- wire connections. Is there anyway I can integrate these into my system? I don't think I can tap directly into the amp in the existing system.

Answer
Depending on how the wiring to the Altec-Lansing speakers is done, it may be possible to splice the wires and run a pair off each speaker cable to the extra speakers.

I'd be cautious about this, though. These days, most "fixed" speaker systems are not designed to be part of a component stereo system, and the impedance of the wires is sufficient to drive the speaker it is attached to, but may not be enough to power a second speaker. Your music source may have the amplitude, but you may find the resulting sound tinny and weak.

How much does it cost to get a descent audio system in car?

hi. im about to receive a 95 toyota pick up and the current radio is going bad. For example only one side works and etc. i was wondering how much would it cost to install a small system like a three piece computer speaker system? i am on a low budget. how much cheaper would it be to just a buy the parts myself and install it myself? If so, how difficult is it?

Answer
Well I would shop around on Bestbuy, or circuit city, any kind of place like that.
Ive seen radios go as low as 35$ brand new.
Likewise with the speakers, Ive seen standard speakers go for 30$ for the set of two.
As far as installing, usually if you buy there products they will install for free. Or charge a small fee, usually its for free though.
And I dont know if your talking about putting a whole system in including subwoofers, speakers, and the radio.
But if you are You can get those quite cheap to.
Youll probally spend around 150-200$ keep in mind, its not gonna be the best around, but itll work.

i have taken a new flat with a dedicated home theater room in it, so i would like to know the best items fitting my budget...
i would like to get a tv, a projector screen of 10*8, a projector, amps, best speaker setup mostly 5.1 or 7.1 --- all of this under 25000$
the home theater room is decent size with 8*10 inch screen easily fitting on the breadth side and has low light coming in during day and completely dark during night

For projectors i was considering runco ls-5 or panasonic ae8000.
I have no idea abt screen.
tv would be minimum 65 inch so mostly considering samsung smart tv es9000.
For speakers i was thinking about the bowers and wilkins mini theatre 5.1 setup.
also need some idea about the best amp along with airplay function.

I am not sure about any of these so would like ur recommendations on all of the devices considering my budget and also wanted to know if the small bowers and wilkins mini theater would be as powerful as some of the huge speakers i could get at that price and also recommend me a bluray player.

also i would like to know if this low end 3 year old runco projector would be better than any other new jvc or panasonic projectors like panasonic ae8000 released this september 2012 at this price point, if not which will be the best and is there any tv better than the new samsung es9000
give me ur suggestions and dont tell me to go and see an audiophile because there are no good audiophiles in india

Answer
Hello Sarga

Well it looks like your looking at some nice gear, I just don't know what your budget is in US dollars.

Its unfortunate you say you have no high end audio video dealers in India. There is allot to consider when designing and installing a home theater system so you will need to find someone who has some good technical knowledge in home audio video system installation.

First there are some important things to consider when installing any good home theater system, and that would be power requirements, lighting, ventilation, heating and air conditioning, getting cable or satelite to the equipment location as well as Data. Ideally you can have a equipment room just off the main theater room with easy access to load software. Seating which if it needs to support many guests then you most likely will need to figure out levels of seats so there is no unobstructed view or from sound. Speaker choices and placement, as well as addressing the acoustics of the room. Screen size, and throw distance of the projector.

So as you can see there is much to figure out and much of it must be pre-planned so you have the best experience.

Lets address power first: You need sufficient power so everything runs efficiently and with no issues. Depending upon the level of the system amplifier requirements you may need several dedicated lines of power. Ideally 20 amp or at least 15 amp circuits. These should be AC lines pulled from one side of the electrical panel. This will assure proper phase which minimizes any issues with ground loop hums. Do not use Romex, use 10 gauge solid core copper in its own dedicated conduit. A separate copper ground rod berried 8ft in the ground for its dedicated ground. Don't forget you will need power at the equipment location as well as the TV and projector locations.

Wiring: First there is a difference in the sound and video quality of cables, so buy the best cables you can afford. Make sure all cables are fire rated approved so they meet code. Do not run any cables next to power lines, if they must cross, have them cross at a 90 angle. Be careful not to puncture the cables if stapling them down to studs.

Run a 3 inch plastic flexible conduit to both video locations ( TV and Projector) this will allow you to pull additional cables in the future if its ever needed, keeping a pull string in them at all times. You will need backing or support for TV and projector locations to support them.

Very important to consider ventilation especially at the equipment location as they generate a significant amount of heat which must be ventilated. You want cool air fans on the equipment and reversed fans to pull heat away and out.

Lighting consider you needs for proper lighting modes. Look into Lutron lighting which can be controlled by your remote to create moods, which is important to get the best image quality.

Remote control operation: is very important so it makes the system enjoyable and easy to use. You will need someone very knowledgeable about remote control programming so everything can be operated easily from ONE remote.

As for the gear I don't have enough space to talk about gear but will be happy to send you my recommendations if you email me. For TV's get the Panasonic TC- P55Vt50 that is a no brainier its the best set going right now. As for the projector yes the Panasonic PT -AE8000 is excellent especially for the money. I love the auto aspect ratio adjustment so you can have a 2;35 to 1 aspect ratio screen ( which is the hot setup) and then auto adjust to the other aspect ratios without the need of a very expensive anamorphic len's system.

Runco makes excellent projectors put the older models are outdated and will not compete with many of the new 1080p models. JVC also makes some very nice reasonably priced projectors that provide excellent picture, and it only goes up from there.

Do not forget to have both the TV and projector properly calibrated preferably from a ISF technician or take your time and learn to go it yourself with a good calibration disc like Video Essentials blu ray.

The audio is also very important and since I don't have enough space feel free to email me

I live in india
I think bose speakers are expensive

Answer
NAD makes excellent receivers but of the brands you listed I would go with an Onkyo usually the most technology for your buck...for speakers Look at Polk Audio; Energy; Aperion Jamo I don't care that much for Klipsch I find them too bright and forward but that is just personal preference; Polk Audio also has a somewhat etched sound as if your listening to speakers and not music...the Aperion 4T Intimus Hybrid 5.1 are fantastic also the Jamo S406 HCS 5.1 are a real bargain for quality speakers...Oh.... in India I would defiantly look at Dali speakers they are suppose to be fantastic..Aperion is going to be too expensive made in USA....and an imported item...

Q. I own a 2000 Nissan Frontier with a factory installed sound system. I am looking to replace four 6 inch speakers and I need a subwoofer small enough to fit under a seat. The maximum that I want to spend is $500. Any suggestions?

Answer
Honestly if you only want to spend $500 no more you need to trim down what you want. You could get everything you want for that price but the quality would be terrible. Think about what you are really going for out of your audio system Sound quality ,Bass, or a mix of both. Then go from their check out crutchfield.com and do a search by your vehicle to see what speakers fit your factory locations. Don't buy of of crutchfield though they are extremely over priced but they are a great source for info. Also check out soundomain.com their is a lot of user reviews on this site for products. the best of wishes for you on this project man and have fun with it.

If I have a $2000.00 budget for an entire car stereo system what sub and amp should I use?

ecofriendl

Total cost with installation needs to be under $2000.00
I want something that will have some boom but not burst my eardrums...I listen to primarily hard rock and rap.

Answer
U said entire stereo system? ok lets do this nicely:

Headunit: Alpine CDA 9856 or Pioneer DEH6800MP

Amps: Memphis Car Audio PR1000.1 (1000 watts RMS at 1 ohm class D mono) for bass and PR100.4 For Highs (50Wrms X4)

Speakers: Infinity Referrence Series Components for the Front, and 6X9 3 ways for the back. Or, Memhis MC class speakers.

Subzzzz: two Memphis M3-124 Subs. 12" subs Dual 4 ohm Coils all wired in parallel to get a 1 ohm load. In a Ported box.

Make sure u get these 2: 3 farad capacitor and 4 gauge wiring.

U will get clean clear sound from ur highs, plus loud, well balanced lows that u can control how loud u wanna get from the sub output on ur headunit. I selected heaunits that are iPOD, satellite radio, CD changer or AUX input ready. And each has built in EQ/Xover of some sort, plus 3 sets of RCA's.

There are many more options out there, but beleive me, u will love this system. Hope u can find a Memphis dealer near u.

What is the best home theater system at a low price?

I would like some recommendations for good audio speaker systems at a low price. I am on a budget, and would like to find a great sounding system with a subwoofer for $350-$550. I'm sure they're out there! Please help!

Thank you

Answer
Well, you're not clear on what exactly you need.

A good HT audio system includes a home theater audio receiver, a set of speakers, in budget systems, we're talking 5.1 systems, and maybe some of the source devices, such as a disc player, be it an upconverting DVD, or a BluRay.

The first thing is that the all in one systems that include the disc player in with the control unit are just garbage. They tend to have bad speakers, and ones which have proprietary connections, so you cannot use them without that system's control unit. Then, there's the fact that having the disc player be built in with the control unit of the system means that you cannot later upgrade it, and that if it breaks, your whole system is out of action.

No, if you want good sound, and good connectivity, plus the ability to upgrade one part of the system without replacing 100% of it, then you want a separate audio receiver, and a proper home theater speaker set made by a company that specialises in speakers.

A good pick on Amaz*n would be a Yamaha 371BL receiver, going for $190 (list price $250), then add a Polk 705 5.1 speaker system for $250 (list price of $600). Add in some 16 gauge speaker wire (100 feet for about $12), and some connecting cables (digital optical cable-connects TV audio out to the receiver, so that you can listen to the TV's sound through the HT system-$5; HDMI cables to connect the disc player to the receiver, then a second one going from the receiver to the TV, $3 each; and a subwoofer cable, about $8), and you'll be set for good sound for years to come.

Call that just under $500, all included.

what kind of speakers for big screen tv?

bellatrix2

i am getting a new big screen tv. they are trying to talk me into spending a lot of money on having them set up surround sound speaker system. i'm sure there is an easier and cheaper way, though i am a girl and don't know anything about speakers. can you just buy separate speakers and hook them up to the tv yourself? is there a good place like radio shack or something that can do it cheaply?
thanks!

Answer
If you don't just have to have the 5.1 surround sound, and your spending budget is important to you, I would recommend just going with a pair of floor standing front speakers and a receiver. I empasize quality over quantity, and quality doesn't have to be super expensive. However, if you go with the cheapest system you can find, you are really just defeating the purpose.

Here are a couple of choices for you to look at that will put you on the right path (ou can e-mail me anytime if I can help you more than I have given you to work with here)...

THE RECEIVER EXAMPLES:

- Onkyo TX-SR504 (~ $220 to $240)
- Pioneer VSX-516-K (~ $139 to $220)
- Yamaha HTR5930 (~ $170 to $245)

THE SPEAKER EXAMPLES:

- Infinity Entra Two ($39.95/pr.)
RARE DEAL -I might have to get a pair myself at this price!

- SDAT HD380 ($99.99/pr.)
I've owned this brand before, and I can tell you they are a good value.

- Athena - Audition AS-F1.2 ($249.95/pr.)
A very highly rated speaker for the money.

Radio Shack may have some good offers on receivers, but they don't have much good stuff in the way of speakers there. Make sure you browse their website before you go down to the store so you know what you're looking for so you won't waste your time and have the salesperson talk you into something you don't want for more money.

Best Buy and Circuit City are good places to go for what you're looking for, also Walmart if you have one locally. Again, browse their website first for deals, and your local paper so you are focussed on what you want and won't let the salespersonnel point you in the wrong direction where you will spend more money that you initially wanted to do.

Let me know if I can be of any additional help. If you don't already, you might consider a DVD player so you can play movies and your CDs at home too.

For most people, quality over quantity gives the most enjoyment in the long run.

Happy Home Theatering!

What is the best home theater system money can buy?

I'm putting together a fantasy list of "toys". I've already figured out what would be the ultimate television, now I want to find the perfect stereo system to compliment it. Money is not a problem, and the more over-the-top the system is, the better.

Answer
Here is a 6 million dollar home theater setup: http://thechive.com/2010/06/08/this-is-what-the-most-expensive-home-theater-in-the-world-looks-like-21-photos/ .

These ones probably stayed under the 7 figure mark: http://www.hometheaterdesignmag.com/highend/ .

If you were referring to just the components of a HTIB (home theater in a box), or separate receiver and speaker components, try these links:

What are the top brands of the home theater systems on the market?

Ronq

I am not talking about home theater - in -a box (pre-boxed) systems like sony or panasonic that are usually under $500.

I am talking about the ones you usually put all the components together yourself. I have zero knowledge as to who makes the best home theaters systems.

It would great if you list down several brands and top websites that sell them.

Answer
You should probably check out Amazon (link below) for most of these, as they offer free shipping on most AV receivers and can generally take $100 or more off the price of a receiver. I actually spoke with an AV pro at Circuit City the other day, and here were his feelings on receivers:

Top of the line: Denon (and some Sony's). They just make the highest quality receivers that are capable of doing pretty much anything you want. However, he did forewarn me (and I believe it) that setting up a Denon system is not for the faint of heart of the inexperienced. He said he's seen people struggle with it for days before calling in an expert.

Pretty good: Yamaha and Onkyo (and Harmon Kardon). Both make similar style receivers that are fairly (moderately) intuitive to set up. I know Onkyo provides a microphone that is supposed to optimize the sound quality and the point where you put the mike. I don't think Yamaha's have that on their mid-range receivers.

After that: Sherwood and other makers. Just not the kind of product you want to buy if you're looking for quality. These are more of the "just-scraping-by" style recievers. I'd spend the little extra to make sure you got a quality product that will last you more than a year or two.

For someone who's just looking to get into the market (which it sounds like you are), you may want to look at the Onkyo TX-SR605 style reciever. It has up-converstion, meaning that you can run one single HDMI cable to your HDTV, and all other video signals will be formatted to work. It has 2 HDMI inputs, 3 component video inputs, and 4 digital audio inputs, which should be plenty to last a while. The set up is fairly obvious on the entire receiver and provides plenty of power to the speakers. Most importantly, you can find it (right now) for $400-$500 USD at several retail outlets, including Amazon. A great receiver if you're just getting into them.

Also, speakers are a different subject. You don't want the brands I listed above, you want to look into Boston Acoustics, Polk Audio, Bose and JBL, to name a few. The sound quality and speaker make up will be much better and last longer. You want a cone (the part that makes the sound) that is not paper, but ceramic, plastic and/or part titanium.

Hope this helps! Check out the link below Amazon (CNET) for more comprehensive reviews of everything you're looking for.
