What kind of amp do I need to power high end audiophile speakers to their full potential?

Exact

Everytime I see an audiophile stereo setup, I see two large beautiful speakers on each end and in the center are 2 or 3 amps stacked on top of each other. What kind of amps are those?
I have a full 6.1 HT setup but I sometimes like to listen to my music using only main towers (without the sub.)
Unfortunately, my surround sound receiver doesn't have enough power to push audiophile quality speakers to their full potential. (only 110 watts per channel)

Thank you! 10 points for best answer today!

Answer
Many of the higher end speakers require high current amplification to power them properly. So it is important to choose the right amplifier to both drive the speakers properly electrically, and complement them sonically. That is why with some high end audio system you will see solid state amplification and other use tube amplification it depends on personal preference and what kind best powers and compliments the type of speakers. Electrostatic speakers for instance many Audiophiles like tube amplification as it tends to complement them better sonically, richer fuller sound. Electrostatic speakers because they are so fast and resolve allot of detail they tend to sound to lean with solid state amplification.

The amplifiers are setup at the speaker end to keep speaker cables as short as possible, as speaker cables create the most loss in sound quality as the length gets longer, and the higher end speakers cables can get very expensive. It is always better to use short speaker cables, and longer interconnects to the preamplifier as this has the least amount of sound degradation.

There are different types of high end amplifiers so the amount of chassis you see at the speaker end may very because of the design. There are stereo amplifiers which are one chassis, mono block amplifiers, which are one channel amplifiers one each for each speaker, and then there multi chassis amplifiers which may have the power-supplies separate from the main chassis.

So as for your speakers, depending on where you bought them I would first ask the dealer what there recommendation is on amplifiers to power them properly. You can also ask the manufacture there recommendations and what they use.

Any high current good quality "higher" end amplifier ( and no they don't have to be mega dollars, there are some excellent sounding budget amplifiers) will be able to power them properly. Certainly more than 3 to 5 hundred though lol, a decent amplifier is at least $500 unless you get something used. Audiogon is a good place for used high end gear but you need to know what your buying.

Receivers are made very poorly, because they are trying to put three components in one chassis and at a low price point. 90% of them are not high current "enough" and not able to drive wide impedance swings as most separate good quality amplifiers can.

Like one gentlemen has mentioned, if your receiver has pre-amp outputs, for your main left and right channels you could buy a separate stereo (or mono block) amplifiers just for your front main speakers.

But you would still be limited in the quality of the preamplifier section in the receiver. Receivers don't have very good preamplifier ether so, you will now be able to drive them better with a good amplifier but the sound will be compromised by the preamplifier. "but" it does give you the opportunity to upgrade later on and get yourself a good preamplifier for music. Preamplifier is the single most important part in a music system, it has the biggest effect on the overall sound, which most people don't realize. It is the hardest component to design and get right, and a good preamplifier can get very expensive very fast.

I used to have a good blog I wrote to help those trying to design a good music or home theater system but Yahoo does not support them any longer. So I am working on a google blog and will be happy to send you a link when I get it done, just send me your email and request and will put you on a list when I get it done.

Hope that helps for now

Oh if your wanting to learn more about high end audio I would strongly suggest reading a very good book that is very informative and a good read, is THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HIGH END AUDIO / by Robert Harley (very well respected in the high end industry, and I agree with allot of what he says)
Get the 4th audition as it includes home theater systems as well.

im using infinity refrence speakers 6.5 in the front and 6x9's in the back, but anyways i just dont like the way they sound. iv'e been looking at the speakers Pioneer Premier TS-C720PRS 6.75 speakers. http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=17068

i know i can squeeze them in the doors no problem (this is in a 1997 dodge avenger es). but can anyone find an adaptor bracket for 6x9 to 6.75 speakers. it would be greatly appriciated. Will this sound good two pairs of these speakers paired up with a MB Quart 4 chanel amp running 50watts rms. And i already have two 12inch infinity Kappa Perfect subs running 275 Watts rms each. I really dont care about volume i care about high quality sound reproduction so look at this system from an audiophiles perspective.
the amp

Answer
You cannot go wrong with Kenwood. I don't have 3 way or 2 way. I have individual tweeter, mids and subs. An amp for every set of speakers and my four 10" JL Audio subs. JL makes the best subs on the planet in my opinion.
As far as subs go you never want to go bigger than 10's. They will play any genre of music fantastically. If you just want to play rap then go for the 15's. Rock, country, jazz, etc. washes out with subs bigger than 10's.

Sony Home Theatre system - speakers shut off?

BluEyedGrl

I have a sony home theatre. . when the volume hits a certian point (about 36) the speakers shut off and the display reads "protect" . . this is very annoying as it happens when the music is not particularly loud. . anyone know how to make it stop?

Answer
The system is protecting itself because your speakers are
presenting too much of a load on the amplifier. Either get
some 8 Ohm speakers or a better receiver than can han-
dle a tougher speaker load.

Logictech z623 2.1 speaker system high volume.?

Tyler

When I turn up my logictech z623 2.1 speaker system to %100 the subwoofer sounds different than when at %50. And it doesn't sound different in a good way. It seems a little sketchy and that it shouldn't be making that sound. Is it normal that its making a different kind of sound? Thanks in advance.

Answer
You can only turn up the volume so high before the amplifiers for the sub and speakers run out of clean power and start to clip (distort). Turning up the volume past the point where you start to hear distortion causes the amps and your speaker coils to heat rapidly and will eventually damage your speakers or amps.

The volume control is made so you can still get good output, even if the input from your source is a bit low. With a strong source, you should not expect to be able to turn the volume all the way up on any audio equipment without causing clipping. That's almost never the case.

TV/Speakers/Karaoke System?

V for V

I have a TV and speakers. What equipments do I need to hook the TV to the speakers? What about for a karaoke system? Do I need like a mixing amp or something? Can anyone provide me the links or tell me how to get those equipments?

Answer
You must have a receiver and audio cables (the red and white ones).

The speakers will connect to the receiver with speaker wire. You must run stereo audio cables out from the tv (if it has audio output jacks on the back) into the receiver (usually into the jacks labled "video 1" or "tv/sat").

If your karaoke system is sending both audio and video into your tv, then the audio cables running from the tv to the receiver will be sufficient. If you are not running audio to the tv from your karaoke machine, then you will need a second set of stereo audio cables running from the karaoke machine into your stereo.

What is the best brand of speaker use for home karaoke system?

Mike

I am looking for a pair of speaker for my karaoke system at home , but I really don't know what brand , I saw few kind like mbm , ips 680 idol , 1000 ips idol , 301 Bose , speakers !!!!!!! Any one know please give me advise , thanks

Answer
If you have a nice home hi-fi you can use it for Karaoke too. JBL and Celestion speakers are good, but lots of people will have a different make they favour. Bose are ok but over-priced. Look for the sensitivity, measured in dB, the higher the rating, the better the speaker, and the louder it will be for a given power. Top end speakers can be over 100dB but anything over 85dB is pretty good.

I just got a bass speaker to hook up to my tv, i had to use an adapter and hook it into a headphone jack. That worked but now the sound only comes through the bass speaker. how do i get it to come through the tv as well

Answer
Yes when using the headphone jack output it then shuts off the output to the speakers, so no you cannot hook it up the way you have it. It would depend weather your TV has a pair of variable RCA left and right audio output jacks on the back, This then would allow the main speakers to play and would also vary the output to the subwoofer so the volumes would also be able to track together.

Problem there might be that most audio outputs from TV's are fixed so check to see if the audio output of your TV is variable. It might have a switch on the back or in the TV's menu allow the output to be selected to fixed or variable. If its fixed only no you it will not work.

If it is a variable output then you have to combine the left and right channels to make a single mono signal (you can use a pair of RCA y adapters you can get at radioshack) and combine the left and right to make a single mono signal.

Would an entertainment sound system with speakers help my very old grandpa hear the TV better?

Ben

My grandpa is 99 years old and to hear the TV he turns up the volume to a point where he can hear it comfortably but to a point where everyone else has to leave the room because it's so loud. If we put in some speakers in the room or by his head, do you think he would turn the volume down a bit?
Sadly, headphines are not and option because I don't thnk he would put up with them. He would call them uncomfortable and annoying among other things.

Answer
Putting a speaker near his head might help, though it would have to be the "center" speaker because that's where most dialogue is played through.

A pair of headphones might be easier, though you need to figure out how to connect them and still have audio play through the TV speakers (some TVs allow this, others may not). I highly recommend wireless headphones, they are much more comfortable.

If your TV does not have a headphone output then you could get a receiver with a headphone port, but it seems like an expensive way to get headphone support, so only do this if you also want to have surround speakers. Make sure if you buy one of those all-in-one DVD home theater systems that it has audio inputs so that you can send other audio to it (such as from your cable box or over the air TV programming).

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent soundbar/subwoofer option., July 1, 2009
By Bearcat (Ohio)

This is one slick little soundbar/subwoofer combination. A significant improvement over the previous offering, the CT100. The sound bar is bigger than that model and feels like it is better constructed. The subwoofer is a solid piece of work as well.

Now for the important part, sound quality. The sound quality is much better than the old model and I would say it approaches the quality of the more expensive Yamaha YSP sound bars. You will probably have to do a little tweaking with it to get it set up properly but once you do this baby will shine. Sound is strong from both the soundbar and the subwoofer. The subwoofer is where your connections are located. You can run your dvd/blu ray player and your cable box (among others) to the sub and then the sub will run an HDMI cable to the tv. You can pretty much plug anything into the back of the sub as there are three HDMI inputs, two component inputs and a composite input along with the normal cable tv coax.

One thing to keep in mind. This will not surpass the surround quality of a good quality seperate sound system with multiple speakers. But then again most buyers should know that from the start. This is an option for people who don't want speakers all over the place or who have space issues which make a soundbar solution the best option. I rated this item 5 stars in comparison to other soundbar solutions, not compared to a surround system with multiple speakers. While there are some better sounding soundbars they are at least twice as much if not more expensive. For the quality and price this is an excellent soundbar option.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Happy with my Sony CT-500 soundbar !!!!!!, August 7, 2009
By Davyo (Las Vegas) - See all my reviews
I've been a soundbar junkie for years and have owned in the past almost ALL of the Yamaha YSP's ever released and have also owned the older Sony CT-100, the CT-500 is a big improvment over the older CT-100.
Big jump in sound quality and the surround effect, plus on-screen menu's, more connection options and a bigger wider more powerful soundfield,,, the subwofter is even much improved sound wise from the older CT-100 as well.

As with any soundbar though, they will not work in every room, you do need to have walls to reflect the sound off of.
I have also found that soundbars work much better if they mounted higher and NOT lower, so if you have a wall mounted plasma or LCD, mount the soundbar ABOVE your display to get the best sound from it.

Also, there are a few defective CT-500's floating around,,, I had to exchange one before I got my next one that was problem free,,, but it was worth it.

Anyhow, the CT-500 rocks,, its a keeper !!!

Cheers
Davyo

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Product, August 11, 2009
By Ryan M. Teague
(REAL NAME)
I really wish this product was around 5 years ago. I had just purchased a HDTV and found out I needed to upgrade to a receiver with HDMI and Component inputs to implement a surround sound setup. I absolutely loathe hooking up Home Theatre equipment whether it's contorting my body to get to the back of the receiver, organizing the web of wires, running of speaker wire under carpet/behind walls... Not to mention the receiver/speaker setup we when with was 5 years ago was 2-3 times more than this product and I have never been happy with it.

Fast forward to the CT 500 Soundbar. The setup was ridiculously easy, took 30 minutes tops and most of that was unhooking all of the old equipment. 3 simple HD connection to the back of the sub (easy access) and Blue Ray, Xbox 360 and Satellite were up and running. I tested movies, Rockband for the Xbox 360 and just regular Satellite TV. I was blown away by all three, couldn't believe this setup could pack such a punch.

My biggest complaint with 5.1 systems is usually the voice audio is drowned out. Not with this unit, voice in both movies and regular TV was crisp and clear. The sub was deep and rich whether it was thunder or the thump of a base drum.

Product has completely changed my viewing/playing experience for entire family.

hey how do you set up Insignia 2.1 Speaker System (3-Piece) - Black to Toshiba 32" Class 720p LCD HDTV?

Answer
Tv today are not capable of powering any speaker. They only have an optical audio output, which has to be connected to a receiver or a home theater in a box with an optical audio input. This signal is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder. There are some sound bars that are capable of connecting to a tv. Hope this will help you out.

Full or Rear Wireless Speakers Home Theater?

Tariq

Hello,

What's the cheapest full or rear wireless home theater in the market?

Things to be considered:

1- Good branded
2- At least 5.1 channels
3- At least 800 Watts
4- DVD / BD / 3D BD all are fine with me
5- USB

Thank you very much!
Thank you AVDADDY
________________________________________________________________________________

Dear Grumpy Mac, I don't know what to say, I'm really thankful for the huge amount of time you game me, you're such a nice very helpful guy.

Ok, Full stands for full wireless speakers, front and rear.
I didn't know those large power numbers are only for marketing, thank you!
USB, so I can play music from the stick on the theater unit.
Cheapest as much as possible.
I can skip the blu-ray player.
tall boy speakers are not good as monitor style speakers?
please, why did you recommend me onkyo over the other brands you mentioned?
do you advise a specific model number?

always thank you very much

Answer
Yikes. You need a LOT of education before you buy anything.

What do you mean by "full"?

"800 Watts" Large power numbers on the box like "1,000 WATTS OF POWER" is usually used on crappy systems to fool first time buyers. If it is a skinny receiver with a built-in disk drive - run.

"USB" - Home theater systems are NOT computers.

"cheapest ... wireless" - This is oxymoronic. Wireless means you do not run 'speaker' wires, but each speaker must contain:

* All the components to make a speaker
* A power supply for each rear speaker
* A Amplifier for each rear speaker
* Electronics to receive signals to each rear speaker.

Take the price of a modest bookshelf speaker - then multiply it by 4 to make it wireless.

"Good Branded" - this is about the only thing you mention that I agree with. A modest Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer or Onkyo AV Receiver will probably work better for you.

Let me focus on power:

With home theater - you surround yourself or a few chairs with a ring of speakers. This is NOT a music system where you are trying to reach concert-hall volume .. in the neighbors home. You just need a modest amount of power per speaker to give a few chairs the surround sound effect.

A good, honesty measured AV Receiver that outputs something like 80 watts per channel will do a great job and can be found in the lower end or middle range of many good brands.

GENERAL GUIDELINES

You want to look at a system that has all these attributes:

* A full-sized, AV Receiver with lots of spare inputs
* A separate, self-powered subwoofer
* 5 monitor style speakers (or 7)
* No BluRay player or has a separate, stand-alone BluRay player. Not a built-in drive

A system that matches these criteria will give you a great Movie experience, lets you attach all types of things, lets you upgrade or swap parts if you want and probably wont cost you more than $500-$1,000 but will last for years.

Search Amazon for "Onkyo Home Theater" to find some box systems that meet all these criteria.

Hope this helps.

best sound system for HD TV?

What system would you advise for amazing sound effects during movies? I will be playing it on blu-ray (ps3), with my 1080p bravia TV. I am hoping to play games with it, and watch movies such as Star Wars, action or horror movies. Is there anything else I need to know? Also my room only has 2 corners should this be a problem? What about wires? Also which type should I get? 5.1 or 7.1? Is wireless inferior in sound quality? What do you think of Sony or Yamaha?

Answer
I would look at the Energy 5.1 speaker system better than Yamaha or Sony.

Does the memorex speaker system work with the iPhone 3g?

Patrick G.

I just bought a memorex speaker system for an iPod but I have an iPhone and when I put it on it says it won't be able to charge it and when I play music it it doesn't come out of the speakers.

Answer
probably not. with your iphone, i've found only certain speakers will work. just because they have the same 32 pin connector doesn't mean they'll work.

iphone 3g?

Erick B

what is the difference between the iphone 3g and the other iphones? other than price and gigabytes.

Answer
Actually, the amount of storage (GB) is the same. iPhone 3G still has 8 GB and 16 GB.

The only difference between the 3G iPhone and the current iPhone:

3G - internet (when not on Wi-Fi) is almost three times as fast. You can pretty much say that the 3G iPhone is "always connected to Wi-Fi" (though Wi-Fi is still faster).

GPS - Global Positioning System

Look - Plastic Backing, 16 GB has a choice of Black or White back

External Speaker quality improved

Price - if you're new to AT&T, have an iPhone, or currently eligible for upgrade, you get the $199/$299 price. Otherwise you have to pay $399/$499, the same as the old iPhone (and still renew contract). If you don't want to renew contract, then it's $599/$699 released later.
The data plan has been upped to $30 instead of $20...this makes the iPhone 3G the same as all the other smart phones (and helps pay for the price difference.

Cheapest computer build that will run cod black ops?

guberman

Please give some examples with prices and all the components I will need or links is fine.

Answer
First of all, what Black Ops are you talking about? The first one or the second one(due to be released later this year? ).
System requirements for Call of Duty : Black Ops(1) are:
Core 2 Duo processor E6600
2GB of RAM
256MB GeForce 8600GT / ATi X1950 PRO
12GB of free disk space.

Based on that data I would say you would need the following (MINIMUM) configuration to run Black Ops 2:
Core 2 Duo E8400 / any 3.0GHz+ dual core processor
3GB of RAM
Radeon HD4870+ (minimum 256MB / 512MB)

Recommended system requirements(my guess):
Intel Core i5/ AMD Phenom II X4 /any 2.8GHz+ quad core processor
4GB of RAM
Radeon HD6850 1GB / nVidia GeForce GTX 260/275

Paste the codes in the searchbox on www.newegg.com
Getting a DUAL-CORE system is NOT the smartest thing to do in 2012 when games are being optimized to run better on quad core processors.....the dual core era is over, no matter what die-hard fans say.

Optical drive:

You may also need 2 of these: N82E16812123111
This is what your tower would be. If you want the cheapest solution you may want to stick to your current display, mouse & keyboard, speakers ..etc. and just get the "core" of the computer(that is, the tower).
CPU - $100
CPU Cooler - $26
Motherboard: $95
Memory - $25
Graphics card : $65
HDD: $65 / $100
PSU:$40
PC Case: $20
Optical drive(s) : $18
SATA Cables: $9
TOTAL: $463 / $498 (with the 1TB HDD)
I wouldn't even recommend an Intel configuration since their cheapest quad-core processor is $180.
But for the sake of information flow:
You can keep your current configuration and only change the CPU and the motherboard in order to get an Intel computer. Since the minimum you should consider buying when it comes to CPUs is a quad core processor, for an Intel computer you would have to buy:
N82E16819115089 -$180
My recommendation, if you choose Intel, would be to add some bucks and go with the 2500K:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072&Tpk=N82E16819115072
-$220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131711&Tpk=N82E16813131711
-$110
or
N82E16813131781
-$125
Going with an Intel configuration means paying a total of: either $532 / $587(with the 2500K and the $125 motherboard).
My personal recommendation is that, if you are on a budget, you should go with AMD, but if you can afford the cheapest Intel configuration, then go with Intel.
Intel is currently on top in terms of performance, but AMD isn't bad at all, actually it is a very good performer too.
As an alternative to that graphics card I recommended, you could also choose a more powerful GPU, like this one:

or this one

And why would you go with an outdated cpu like that? O.o
X79 is like dead now days lol

EDIT: o didnt see your graphics card.
ya a gtx780 needs like a good 850W PSU... i dont think a generic 800W would last even 1 session of high load...

4.0 out of 5 stars Crisp Clear Sound, June 25, 2004
By J.SC "J.SC" (Atlanta, GA) - See all my reviews
These speakers give much better sound than my old pair of speakers. They also look much better than just about any multimedia speaker out there. Of course, they cost more too. If you are looking for a good sounding, sharp designed set of speakers and can afford the $150-$200 price, get these. If these cost too much, but you still want something unique looking, try the JBL Creature II speaker set. It ranges $60 - $100.

A few things you cannot tell from the product description:
> These speakers (Soundstick II) are compatible with PCs. The original Soundsticks were only for Apples.
> The casing, though plastic, is very solid. I can't tell how scratch resistant it is though. I have not tried to scratch them yet...
> The subwoofer has a bass adjust knob.
> One of the satellite speakers has a touch volume control.
> The system does not have an on/off button. It designed to stay on all the time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Everything sounds perfect except metal stuff......, January 1, 2005

(REAL NAME)
I set up my Soundstick in my bed room.. not with the computer, but with my iPod, I tried them with my iPod at various stores before I bought them. they sound much better than the JBL Creature 2, so if you are choosing between the two, you don't have to, go buy the Soundstick 2.

they are strongly built, very soild, they sound a little stiff brand new, but, you know, that's normal for audio speakers, especially the sub. I run them at low volume for few hours and they start singing right there, I put the satellites on the table top, about 2 feet from each other, and the sub under the table, have a lot of definition and "width" from the two tiny, and with the bass boost twist at the back of the sub, you'll be amazed how easy the balanced tone can be adjusted, and they sound very soild even in very low volume,

I tried pop stuff like Michelle Branch, Clay Aiken, sound very clean, and have a very good definition, jazz greats like Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, every instruments sound so distinct, and bands like Maroon 5, My Chemical Romance(it's esp good on trying stereophonic), Story of the Year, or even bit heavier Blink, or the D'n'B 4Hero, the Soundstick 2 still provide very good spectrum of different freq inside small area like my bedroom, thing like bassline and bass drum are audible and solid, yet highs like hihat and cymbal are clean but not ping, the overall performance is excellent, considering the price and size of the unit.

but when I turn to a even heavier side, like Pantera, Slayer, or Soilwork, Mnemic or Shadows Fall, those fast double bass rumbles are still audible, very clean, but even i boost the bass a little bit more, it still do not have enough power and air to be felt, i 'm not talking about that kinda floor shaking storm, but just not enough "heaviness", but i think it's partly due to the fact that I connected the Soundstick directly to the iPod dock.

Cons?! i'd be happier if the bass adjust knob is placed at the front of the sub, but not the back, so i can hear the difference in tone while i'm adjusting, without leaning real close to the sub, which on and off gave me the illusion of excessive bass. And they don't have any kind of indication on peak or threshold volume-wise, the touch volume control is good to use, but very often i'm worrying about if i would peak the system by turning too loud, especailly back when it's brand new.

I'd recommend everyone buying one of this for small room use, the Soundstick sound really great, and combine with artistic design, the blue LED is really a thoughtful attraction, which really add points for anyone who want their system to be more than ordinary audio speakers, but a feelie as well.

i have a 2.1 speaker system for my computer, but sound only comes from one speaker?

ive tried all the obvious things like balance and graphic equalizer in windows media, but i cant think of what else to do, any help will be highly appreciated.

first chck that u hav properly inserted the pin into the speaker socket of ur CPU..
if still, then chck the sound properites......the sound balance...it must be to the left or right....

if ther's still d same problem, then there might be some erroe in ur speaker to woffer connection, or in the speaker/amplifire itself!!!

Bose speaker system for a car?

qwerty12

I just got a 2007 toyota camry, everything stock. I love the sound of bose speakers for home use, but does bose sell speakers for a car? If so where can you buy them, and do they even sound good? Thanks

Answer
yes they sell car speakers
they are hard to find in stores and on the web, because all of their speakers are "designed" for specific car applications, and are "tuned" for specific cars by their placement (sound stage)
they sound good but are over priced for what you get, your best bet would be to look into JL Audio (over priced) or Infinity components (not full range, 2 ,3 ,or 4way speakers- you want the tweeter separate from the mid bass driver for best sound quality)
here is a link to their website http://www.bose.com/controller?event=VIEW_STATIC_PAGE_EVENT&url=/automotive/index.jsp

Speaker System Project? (car?

jvojtushjr

I am going to set up my own car speaker system and i have somne questions. I was going to get a head unit that has 6 channels, 17W rms, and i was going to replace the front 2 speakers (5 1/4") and the back 2 (6x9"). I am adding a subwoofer and possibly 2 tweeters. i dont understand how the watts are distributed to each speaker, if the head unit only offers 17W , am i understanding it wrong? also would it work to add a pair of tweeters because im guessing 2 chanels for front, 2 for back speakers, and the other 2 for the subwoofer. am i wrong?

Answer
yeah it probably says : 17w x 6 which means its a 102w deck, so if you connected 4 speakers it would be 25.5w to each speaker and all 6x9 are 3 way speakers meaning they are fitted with tweeters in the center, i recommend that you just connect you front 2 speakers and your 2 rear 6x9, if u do that don't expect to much performance, just a lil better then a standard car stereo, theres is no way it will have enough power to run a sub... if you want the sound that it seems like your looking for then you'll have to get a amp and your deck will have to have RCA output, for the set up you seem to be after i would suggest to get a 5 channel amp which is 2 front 2 rear and a sub channel....

What is a good desktop computer speaker system?

palman18

I want to buy some new computer speakers since my old cheap speakers broke and I'm sick of using a gaming headset for music and movies. I am looking to spend around $150-200 on a good speaker system. I am a "semi-audiophile" and I appreciate good sound. I would prefer a system with a good balance of highs, mids, and lows and would rather have a good 2.1 system than a cheap surround sound system. I would prefer a system with a subwoofer, but if there are any that have good bass without one, I am open to it. I don't have a sound card on my computer, but I am open to buying one if it makes a considerable difference. Any help is appreciated.

How can I hook up my speaker system with my computer? PLEASE help 10 pts best anwser.?

Raddin

Hello and thank you for answering my question. I have a speaker system but no connections to my computer or anything, just wires, so is there any way that I could connect it to another device such as an Mp3 or laptop.
Thanks

Answer
only way this will work is if you have a stereo or a power source for the speakers. The computer will not provide enuf power to make them loud or work at all. You get a decent pair of headphones. Like ten dollar pair not even. The headphone wires should be at least twice as thick as ipod ear bud wires. You cut the headphone wires as close to the headphones as possible. Strip them about an inch. There mite two sets of wires in one rubber casing. Separate them and leave the inner cased wire alone (if there is one). Now get audio jacks(red and white kind). How ever long you need to reach your stero from your computer. If you have those types of jacks on it. Then plug in the headphone jack to your comp turn stero on put wires together. If you need more help check out a tec sit they sometimes help. If you have direct wire input to the stereo just go to radio shack and get a set of speaker wires. Not that much money will be spent. Hope I could help.

Where can i get cheap DJ speakers?

firstrom20

My friend and i are DJs. were planning to start in the summer. we have everything but the speakers. we dont have a lot of money.

Answer
Hello,

When it comes to buying your first DJ speakers, there are a few things to keep in mind:

Budget. Of course, this is the bottom line. If you only have, say, $200 to spend, your choices will be a lot less than if you had $1000. That said, pro sound equipment is not cheap, and it may cost a little more to get started than you think. Really, I would say it would cost around 1000 bucks for a good, reliable starter system, but I know where you're coming from. When I was 13 years old, getting started, I didn't have much cash either. I have some ideas to help you get started DIRT CHEAP. Just read to the bottom.

Amplifier. You need an amp, too. When I started DJing, I thought I had skirted this issue when I used my home stereo receiver as an amp for a year or so... but, one night, at a crazy dance at my own high school (we're talkin' early 90's here) the receiver gave out (blew power transformer) in the middle of the dance. You need real amplification.

Size. Depending on the type of venues that you will play, you will have different needs as to the size of the speakers you need. In my career, I went from 15's to rock house parties and small dances to multiple 15's and 18" subwoofers to playing monsterous clubs where I didn't need any equipment to now using an ultra-portable system that sounds great in mid-sized bars. It all depends on what you want to do.

Transportation. Don't laugh; your choice of speakers must match with your transportation. If you have a big, covered truck, you can haul almost anything, but if your largest covered transportation is a sedan, you will need to have smaller, more portable speakers. (Smaller and more portable does not mean that they won't sound as good, really it means that they will cost more.) Also, make sure you are buying speakers that will fit in your largest covered transportation. An open truck bed works great, but you will be kicking yourself when you have your first gig on a rainy day and your thumpers won't fit in your mama's Camry. Trust me, I learned that the hard way.

Now, having said that, I'm going to answer your question with a few assumptions. I'm assuming that you want to spend the least amount of money possible and you need a versatile basic pair of 2-way 15's. These will be suitable for most events, they are rather portable, they look cool, and they sound pretty good. I'm also assuming that you know that this system will only serve as a starter, and you will need to save cash to add on to it very soon.

Option #1: Radio Shack 15's. Don't laugh, I started with the old generation RS 15's back in the days. They had great frequency response, which is very important when you only have one pair of speakers, no subs. You want something that plays down to 30hz. The $85 RS speakers will, and you can buy a decent amp there for $200 (model 32-2055). So $170 for the speakers and $200 for the amp. Not gonna get much more affordable than that.

Option #2: Hit up www.sixstardj.com and buy a cheap system. Here's one http://www.sixstardj.com/madjsopak.html . I know nothing of Marathon equipment, but for $300 you can get 2 15's, an amp, and speaker cables. If you don't need an amp, you can buy the speakers alone. Another brand to check out on the sixstar website is Gemini. The've got some cheap speakers, but not as cheap as Marathons.

Option #3: Go ghetto. If you live in a place with ghetto car stereo shops or flea markets, go into those places and ask if they can get you a deal on some DJ speakers. The ghetto shops usually have the hook-up on generic imported speakers that look like pro speakers. They will blow out quick, but if you can get one or two gigs out of them, you can buy something better. Generally, watch out for generic imported "pro" speakers. If you do buy them, expect them to junk out on you.

Option #4: Go with something smaller than 15". On the sixstardj.com website, you can buy P.A. speakers down to 8" by some brands, including Gemini. I don't recommend anything smaller than 12" for stand alone, but if you had a subwoofer, 8" mains would be fine. Also, maybe you can do a few summer parties with tens and save up your money. Just know that you need 15's rated down to 40 or 30 hz to hear any bass in a loud room. Even my Yamaha dual 15's only go down to 55hz, and they are useless for music without a subwoofer.

Option #5: Check Craig's list, eBay, Amazon.com, and local classifieds for a good deal on a pair of 15's. I doubt if you'll get a really good pair cheap this way, but you may find options. For example, this eBay store http://stores.ebay.com/OnlyFactoryDirect_Pro-Audio-Speakers_W0QQfsubZ2 has a bunch of cheapo generic pa speakers. Remember my warning from option #3!!!!

Option #6: Skirt the amp issue. You can press your luck with a home stereo receiver or a low-powered pyramid amp from www.partsexpress.com or Radio Shack. Bring an oscillating fan from home to keep it cool and c

I have the altec Lansing expressionists 2.2 and the are decent for gaming but suck for music and games.

Logitech LS21 2.1 Stereo Speaker System :-

The sound quality is quite good. Remember, these are computer speakers, not stereo system speakers. The base is good and heavy, and the treble is comfortable. There is a little volume control/headphone plug in hub that has proven it's self very useful. I have it sitting on the corner of my desk. The speakers on either side of my monitor, and the sub on the floor. The bass control is on the back of the sub

Best 7.1 speaker system with Sony STR-DH810 receiver?

Lanny L

Answer
I would go with Klipsch, Polk Audio, or even Sony speakers. They don't a have 7.1 speaker system on the market that I know of. They do have a handful of nice 5.1 systems and you could just go and buy to extra speakers. Personally I'd stay with 5.1 surround sound because there isn't much content in 7.1 channel surround sound. I'd go with a 5.1 for now and wait till 7.1 gets a lot more content, but that's just me. If your decide to go with 5.1 and are wiring your room for surround sound wire it for 7.1 as well for the future so when you do switch to 7.1 the wires well be up and you can just connect two more speaker calibrate the receiver and be done with it.

I want to hear everything clearly, bass, midrange, high range, the works, but dont we all =). There are so many speaker systems out there I can never decide. Whats your say on 5.1's for under £200? Answer
Everything looks good so far, however, look into a different power source for your speakers. Sony makes pretty decent Headunits yet, their amps... SUCK. Choose an amp that more reliable and that puts out more "RMS power" not "maximum/peak power". You want to have more power than necessary so that you don't have to turn your gain level all the way up on the amp. With overpowering, you can turn the gains down. People who do not have adequate power often time try to turn their gains up to compensate for the low volume level... therefore, they usually blow their speakers by trying to make their amp produce what it cant. With the gains up the amp begins to clip/distort and the amp sends this signal to the speakers, which in time causes it to blow.
So, search for a more reliable amp, with a higher "RMS POWER" rating. I usually, use old school amps for my components. I recommend Orion or PPI (before the DEI buyout.) They have great sound quality, very good power output, and they are rated @ 12volts instead of 14.4 volts.

Oh, and have you thought about using a component set up front???

And don't wait too long before adding your sub... the Bass really adds depth to your music. And improves your overall listening experience.

Do I need a receiver for a Speaker system for my home theater system?

Fernando

I was wondering what the receiver does and if I even need one if I were to buy some Polk Audio 5.1 speaker system.

Answer
Any speakers will require a power amplifier to be able to produce sound. Stand alone power amplifier are mainly left for the high end of the audio and are more expensive. Most consumers purchase a receiver, which has a power amplifier to drive the speakers along with other features like a AM and FM radio tuner and a pre amplifier so that you can connect other divice to the unit. This will depend on your personal budget on how much you want to spend for a receiver. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on receivers. You will notice that Onkyo and Pioneer are the top brand from the entry level to the high end. I personally use both Pioneer Elite and Onkyo receivers for well over 35 years and never had one issue. Hope this will help you out.

Equipment suggestions for multi room audio system?

Cdizzle50

Just moved into a house that has a setup in four rooms and I was looking to get opinions for equipment. The setup is as such:

Kitchen: 2 speakers in the ceiling

Dining room 2 speakers in the ceiling with a volume and source select keypad

Master Bed: 2 speaker in the ceiling with volume keypad and outlet box for speaker connect under the tv

Basement: 2 speakers in the ceiling with volume keypad

I also notice in the den area a single source audio input box.

I would like to have it so that I could have different things playing in each room if its possible with this setup.

Thanks
Thanks for the replies. I tried getting the make and model from the keypad but it doesn't have a name on it.

Answer
Depending on how the system is wired will depend on what flexibilty you will have. Your best bet is to go and discover your local high end audio video store, as they are experienced in how to properly install a whole house audio system, and they are the only ones that sell these systems anyway. The chain stores have no clue, and dont carry anything worth purchasing anyhow.

Again depending on how the system is wired will depend on what flexiblity you will have and what system you can put in. There are a number of systems available at many different price points, and the more flexibilty you want the more expensive it will get of course.

Control 4 is one of the newer kids on the block and one of the more affordable systems available, so you might look into that. Then you have ELAN, CRESTRON, AMX, which are higher end systems and can get very expensive very fast, but you can do just about anything with these systems. Just about anything you can think of.

They all require programming from certified programers and installers.

So again discover your local dealer for your best options.

You may also be able to do a simple install if costs are a factor, again these high end dealers can help you choose the right system for you needs and budget.

Do NOT go with a independent audio video installer who is not from a store front they most likely are not trustworth, do questionable work, and good luck getting service after the installation.

What would be the easiest way to hook up a multi room 26 speaker sound system?

Marc

This is for our new fraternity house. The problem i am having is finding a way to hook all of the amplifiers up together to a mixer that i would then hook up to a computer. I know mixers are made for multiple imputs, but what i need is multiple outputs. Does something like this exist? Most mixers that i have found have only had two outputs. The way i have it set up now i would need 5 outputs. Two of the AMP outputs are 1/4 inch, one is RCA and one is either XLR or RCA. This is a lot to spell out in one question so if you need any more info please dont hesitate to contact me back. Thank you!

Answer
What you need to take a look at are whole house audio systems Home Theater Direct is a good source for do it your selfers a mixer may not be compatible with HTD systems though there are systems than have XLR connections but they tend to be the more expensive ones...also DJ mixers that have muliple outputs like that can be rather expensive also....

audio amplifier for bose speaker system and want to connect to lcd tv. What is suggested.?

Tony

Answer
Your tv only has an optical audio output, which has to be connected to a receiver, home theater in a box or a sound bar for you to get any sound from the tv. This is a digital signal that carries a multi channel sound which has to be decoded by a Dolby digital decoder. You then connect you Bose speakers to the receiver. Hope this will help you out.

SRS-XT sound system on lcd tv?

keep_on_sm

is this next sound system after surround sound ?or is it one down from it . what is it?
this surrport 5.1 sound ??

Answer
It's really neither. It's just an enhanced sound option on your TV. It makes the two speaker system of the TV sound more like surround sound. It gives the TV sound more dimension

Are the Infiniti G37's standard 6 speakers Bose also?

ManOnFire

I know the premium sound system option or Infiniti Studio on Wheels is manufactured by Bose but are the standard speakers Bose also?

Answer
I believe they are Bose from what I can remember. When I was looking at them I drove the base one and I think it was a 6 speaker Bose system. I sounded very nice but I'm an audiophile so I got the 11 speaker one with some other options. The upgrade is definitly worth it though.

Can you connect the beats pill speaker with the home stereo?

Kerryann

My mother wants to connect the beats pill speaker with the home stereo system and use it with a remote control. I don't think it's possible, but if it is how does she do it?

Answer
I'm not sure I understand. Why would anyone want to use that horrible little speaker on a real stereo system?

If the stereo has a headphone output or a line-out, you could use that to connect the Pill. But to be honest, this sounds like trying to use skateboard wheels on your car.

Can I make the rear speakers in my surround sound system louder?

Lemon

I got a new system, and the people that owned the house before me had speakers on the back wall of my basement, so the wires were still run there. So I put up two of my speakers there, but they are further back than the front speakers and so i cant even hear them. Is there a way i can set up my system so the back speakers are louder? I have an lg. Also it was the last one off the shelf so it didnt come with a manual which is why i have no idea if its even possible.

Answer
Possibly. Most 5.1 systems have some kind of adjustment for the speakers to balance them. Your best bet is to get the manual from the LG website. If you do not know the model number you can find it on either the front of the receiver/dvd player part of the system, or on a small back plate near the serial number. I have included the link to the LG Support website below so you can get you manual and hopefully solve your sound problem. Be aware that rear speakers do not fire all the time and how often you hear them at all has much to do with the sound mix on your source material (dvds etc..) Hope that helps!

Help! 2003 VW Jetta Speakers/Sound System?

britcee

OKAY! Here's the situation hopefully someone can help!

1.) I appreciate help BUT PLEASE dont suggest I go to an audio shop, I dont have 100s to pay them for installation, alone.

Ok, so when I bought my 2003 VW Jetta Sedan 2.0L
the speakers were already broken, the only working speaker was (and still is) the driver side tweeter.

The previous owners "don't know what happened."

So OCCASIONALLY if I am driving on the highway and hit 80ish some of the speakers randomly will come on but they sound blown from what noise they do make, after a little while they just shut back off..

My questions are, HOW CAN I FIX THIS?! I am tired of driving in slience. (is it just the wiring?)
HOW DO I KNOW IF THEY ARE BLOWN?
WHAT would I need to replace my sound system?
-A new head set?
-Speakers
- Special wiring
- After Market Radio Harness

I have been wanting to try and just replace the speakers, but I was told that, they would work for a little while, and just get blown out (again. if thats what the problem is now) - The guy at the store was trying to sell me 110 things (exaggeration of course....)

And I was told my AMP would cause them to blow..... So if I were to just replace the speakers
is there a way I could bypass the AMP?

Hopefully I can get somewhere with this, I've been doing research on sites
But I dont feel like I can find anything that, makes me feel comfortable in this project I am trying to accomplish.

THank you for your help! :)

Answer
So you have also an amplifier installed if I understand correctly and the seller measured amp's output and found it faulty or he understood it so powerful that it'll certainly burn standard speakers?
Anyway until you make this investigation let's stick on existing speakers: 99.9% of dead speaker cases, "self healing" is not a normal procedure. I'd suspect either corroded terminals (probably on speakers side but check also on crossovers and amp) or cut wires (check also the small wires from speaker's terminal to speaker cone).
If still no progress I'd suggest you got a cheap used car speaker or old tv speaker, connect some wire extensions to its terminals, turn on your headunit at reasonable volume and start trying the various terminals in order to locate the faulty point(s) (starting from speaker terminals and then amps terminals and h/u output).
If I had to make a prediction I'd say that you'll end up replacing some of the speakers and not wiring or head unit etc.

Looking for a new Speaker system?

Ben Balke

Hi, I'm looking to buy a new speaker system just to listen to music from my iphone 5. I don't listen to music at home purely because I don't have any speakers.

My budget is under $100, so I'm not looking for anything massive. But I am looking for something with a subwoofer that can deliver the best bass possible for that price, without skimping out on the other speakers which play the highs/mids. It only needs to make a 10'X10' room sound awesome.

They would be used for a lot of rap and heavy bass electronic music (Don't judge my music tastes).

Like I said, I'm not expecting an amazing speaker system. But just something that will last a long time with no issues that has good bass and good highs/mids. I'm not really looking for my house to shake, but things falling off the shelf would be nice. Thanks for any help you can provide, because I have no idea what I'm doing!

Answer
Total price $116, not including shipping:

Creative Inspire T12 2.0 powered speakers, $45,

http://www.amazon.com/Creative-Inspire-T12-Multimedia-Technology/dp/B0028N6YH0/

Monoprice 8248, 8 Inch 60-Watt powered subwoofer, $54.69,

http://www.monoprice.com/Product?c_id=109&cp_id=10906&cs_id=1090602&p_id=8248

Radio Shack 42-2570, 1/8" stereo y-adapter, $7.99,

http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2103870

SCOSCHE I6RCA35A, 3.5mm Stereo to 2 RCA adapter cable, $8.25,

http://www.ebay.com/itm/360798522456

That's about the best you'll do with $100. It's a pretty ordinary pair of computer speakers, but then you patch in a small powered subwoofer to play with.

Both devices should be compatible with splitting the signal one time, though you'll need to nudge the volume controls higher (which may increase noise).

Speaker System question. What route should I go? 10pts for best answer.?

Dave

Ok i'm looking at a new stereo system for my room. I want something I can hook my iPod up to, good quality, but I really want a good subwoofer to blast some bass. I would love something cheap but I wouldn't mind paying a couple hundred bucks for a good system. Should I buy a shelf system and a subwoofer and hook the subwoofer up to the system? Can I even do that? Am I safer buying a stereo system with a subwoofer included? I would love feedback. thanks for your answers.

Answer
Well... Best option is to actually buy a new Receiver from Yamaha, Pioneer, Onkyo... but as they can get pricey, the positive is that you can buy the speaker you want - with or without subwoofer... and even upgrade to 5.1 or 7.1 if you want to.

If you do want more of a smaller-form factor-stereo like system... then get one that already has bass. Most 1piece stereo systems are closed - and you can't add a subwoofer easily.

Amongst the large array of different systems available, you'll get a few different offerings:
From great buys to overpriced boat anchors.
I'd go with a pair of good monitors - like the Audioengine A5
http://audioengineusa.com/Store/Audioengine-5#gallery

They'd have enough bass and everything else to fill a medium sized room-no problem. iPod/iPhone connectivity - iphone/ipod should be able to stream any radio or web-radio station...
and best of all is that It'll also connect to your computer, TV, bluray ... etc.
$350 for the A5.... AudioEngine also has the A2 [$200] - which is smaller, but less output.

What else?
Ok - try Bose Sounddock 10. $599... and you get a all in one + for another $150, you get wireless streaming music- So for $750 you get a system with two 2" paper drivers and a 5" subwoofer in the inside. Some ppl like the sound - but because there are no tweeters present, their sound is Bloated,synthetic,boomy-monotoned at the same time + it is fatiguing at louder volumes.... but alas, some like it...
...

Hope this helps!
