What is the best way to set up speakers ?

Answer
Depends upon what sort of surround system you got.

1.0 = mono speaker

2.0 stereo speakers, no subwoofer

2.1 stereo speakers, w/ subwoofer (for deep bass)

3.1 same as 2.1 but with a center speaker (usually mounted right over the TV)

4.1 This starts the surround sound category, a speaker in each corner and a sub woofer (placed anywhere convenient as the signal is low and bounces off the walls, a out of the way corner is fine.)

5.1 same as 4.1 but with a center speaker (this is the most common surround sound setup)

6.1 same as 5.1 but with a rear speaker?? (don't know for sure on this one)

7.1 same as 5.1, but includes two more speakers, one on the left and one on the right side of the center of the listening box. This is the very high end of surround sound systems, not a lot of movies use this format, but the system can compensate for that.

You have to enable surround sound in your DVD movie preferences and your receiver has to be able to play the surround sound system format. Dolby, DTS etc. So when you shop for a surround sound system, it needs to play as many formats as possible.

Basically you set up a surround system with the chair/couch in the center of listening area and the speakers placed equal distance all around like a box, so they face the center. The center is where all the sound comes together and meets.

Of course this is impractical in some small rooms where the couch/seating is back against the wall. So the high quality surround sound system has ability to move the "center" around, by lessening the volume of the rear speakers and increasing the front ones as to place the center right over the couch/seating area. These "center" controls are different than the master volume control which just raises the general volume up or down.

If you have such a setup, you have to keep the speakers physically pointed to where the center is, where the most used seating is, not the true center of the room. The object is your directing the sound to a location. If you don't do this, a set of speakers (like the rear) will always be blasting, so you'll hear a lot of back sound, like a car coming up from behind, but you won't hear the voices up front very clearly coming from the center as your drowning your ears with the back speakers.

Most home theater systems "in a box" come with instructions and color coded plugs and outlets so the do it yourself person can get pretty good results. It's just when hooking up additional items and passing the sound through the surround sound system is a challenge. Like the TV, Cable box, VCR, DVD, BlueRay etc.

If you have a Mac, they have optical Toslink stereo mini audio out ports combined in the standard stereo mini port (it's combined, look for the red light). So all you need is a Toslink stereo mini to regular Toslink cable (RadioShack online) to hook up to a quality surround sound system to output the highest quality sound possible.

Most iTunes music is now sold in high quality, but most people can't hear the difference as they are using the old analog method. Also cd's are high quality, but again, people tend to use cheap players and thus can't hear the difference.

There are a lot of surround sound system choices, my advice is to expect to pay around $2000 for speakers and receiver alone. Cd, DVD, blueRay etc players extra. Yourself or someone you know can tackle setting it up for beer and pizza.

If your looking at even more high end there are companies that will come and specialize in setting up the whole theater, TV, projection, surround sound etc.

My suggestion for a really wonderful surround sound system with easy for the user to setup, high quality, lots of surround sound formats, theater, concert hall and other effects, and a fancy hardware, is a Harman/Kardon Home Theater System. You buy a system like this and it's good for the rest of your life with care. 200 watt subwoofer will rattle the neighbors windows at max. Receiver with 110 watt speakers each channel create rich and powerful sound. Hard of hearing? No problem with this system. :)

What's the best brand of home theater equipment to buy?

Craven L

OR, should I be looking into separate speaker and receiver systems?? Whats your top brands?

Answer
Home theater in a box systems are almost all garbage. They often don't allow you to use any other speakers or speaker wires with them. the speakers themselves are almost always cheap and awful.

The best way to go is to get a proper, name brand home theater audio receiver, and combine it with a good set of speakers, and whatever kind of disc player that you want, like either an upconverting DVD player, which start around $50, or a BluRay player, which starts at around a hundred bucks.

In receivers, good makes are Harman Kardon, Pioneer, Denon and Yamaha. Sony, frankly, makes lousy receivers and worse speakers. Good speaker makes include Energy, Klipsch, JBL, Infinity and Polk. Avoid Bose, they suck.

In receivers, you would need to decide if you want to go with a basic 5.1 unit, or if you want to go to 7.1. 7.1 obviously costs more, and you will need seven speakers and a sub, rather than five and a sub.

Good deals can be found on Amaz*n.com, both on receivers and speakers. A Harman Kardon 2600 7.1 receiver can be had for $375. A Pioneer 521-K 5.1 receiver can be had for $175. A Polk 705 5.1 speaker set can be had for $250. They also have good deals on the accessories that you will need, such as digital optical audio cables (To connect the TV's audio output into the receiver), HDMI cables, and 16 gauge speaker wire and a subwoofer cable.

I have an Acer desktop, Windows 7 operating system. I noticed when I plug in my headphones a couple of weeks ago, the sound is distorted. When I use my speakers and subwoofer system the sound is perfect. What happened. How come my headphones won't work? I have tried multiple types of headphones and still the sound is all distorted, but speakers/subwoofer sound perfect. Is it the driver software or something else?

Answer
Hello,

Try checking if the connection between your computer and your headphone has a problem. Try wiggling the cord.

You can also try updating the sound driver. if you don't know how to check the updated version, you can use RadarSync.

How to increase computer speaker volume?

CherryRed

I upgraded my operating system to Windows 7 and in the process, it over wrote some of the drivers. Now my headphone ports won't go as loud as they used to. It's not so much an issue with headphones, but sucks with external speakers plugged in. Any ideas what the deal is or how to fix it? Thanks.
All settings are set to 100%, but it seems like I am only getting about 75% of what I used to have. All connections/hardware is the exact same. The only possible change is missing (preloaded) software or drivers.

Answer
If it's anything like Vista, in the lower right near the clock are two little speakers, one is volume control and the other will open the sound manager. Check both to see what your settings are at.

Yes. There are better speaker system out there than the one you are looking at. Klipsch is one that I can name off at the top of my head now.

I am looking for some really loud speakers with plenty of bass?

Mike

I don't wanna spend more than 100£/160$. I found these and they look pretty good for the price. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-2-1-Speaker-System-Z623/dp/B00413BI7Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1346286724&sr=8-1

Any other suggestions?

Thanks
fuck you avdaddy it's all I can afford

Answer
You could go much louder and cleaner with a little more money if you shop for some "studio monitors". They're essentially the same thing (active speakers), but monitors will be "audiophile" approved performance, and stay sharp and undistorted through most all of the volume range. However, if music is not the main or only audio that these are for, then you might be more happy with a 2.1 setup. Studio monitors don't deliver theater style low frequencies (the frequency range that is not found around any musical instruments, but follows the transformers wherever they go) and subwoofers do. So if it's for video/movie sound and techno/house/hip-hop music, you'll want the sub. If it's for music made with instruments (piano, guitar, microphone, drums, wind, etc.) you'll get substantially better volume and sound quality from monitors. Good luck.

I have a logitech z-2300 system. The right speaker died about two months ago. Im wondering if its possible to use different speakers with the system. The subwoofer is amazing on this thing but the speakers just didnt cut it. Its a single rca connection for each speaker into the subwoofer.

Answer
Well, I would say yes. Although the 'specs' on the web site are not very detailed, it is clear (from the single RCA jack on each speaker to the Sub) that your power amp is built into the Sub enclosure. So, any two, non powered satellite speakers that can handel 80 w each will do.

Not a problem.

What are the two screws on the bottom of the subwoofer of the Logitech Z313 Speaker system used for?

Q. I own a speaker system thats the Logitech Z313 with 2 satellite speakers and a compact subwoofer. There are 2 screws with 2 washer looking things below them that are on the subwoofer box. I want to know what those do because they will not come out no matter which way I turn the screw driver.

Answer
Leave them be. If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

Nate

I don't know anything about speakers and im thinking about getting a new speaker system and i don't know anything about speakers and speaker systems all i know is i want something that is loud and i can hook up an iphone or ipod to it so can somebody leave me any info that is good to know about speakers
im looking for something under $500

Answer
For $500 here are a few options you may really enjoy. These are all active speakers that could be connected directly to your iPod, Computer, or TV etc. No external Amp necessary. For your iPhone/iPod I would pair one of these speakers with an Airport Express to be able to stream your music to your speakers wirelessly. You can usually get an AirportExpress for about $50 refurbished.

AudioEngine A5+ Speakers ($399-$469 per pair).
NHT SuperPower Speakers ($199 per speaker)
NHT SuperZero 2.0 ($99 per speaker)

The other option is passive speakers with a simple 2-channel amp, or a receiver that could eventually be used for home theater.

2 Channel Amps.
Dayton Audio APA $150.
AudioSource Amp100 $100
AudioEngine N22 $199

Receivers, pretty much anything from a name brand (Denon, Pioneer, Onkyo etc). A simple 5.1 should run $150-$250.

Here are a few passive speaks, and or brands that have good reviews.
Pioneer SP-FS52
Cambridge Audio S30 and S70
AudioEngine P4
NHT
PSB

Lastly if you like bass you may also want a subwoofer. Which is a whole different conversation. I personally would put most of your money into really good speakers, then add the subwoofer later.

The best thing to do is to find a local audio shop that caries good brands in your area and go take a listen to some of the offerings in your price range. If there aren't any good shops in your area, you will need to rely on speaker reviews on the net.

How can I connect this logitech speaker system with a 9 pin Mini-Din cord to the back of my computer?

Newsh

Trying to connect this old logitech speaker system to my computer to use with another stereo system?
My mom's Logitech speaker system might only be compatible with her old computer, which was old school...

I already have a decent Insignia stereo system connected to my computer. My mom recently got a new computer and she let me have her old Logitech stereo system with a sub woofer and speakers too, since her new computer came with speakers. The Insignia system I have has subs and speakers too. I want to use both stereo systems at the same time on my computer. I got a 4" stereo audio Y cable at the electronics store, male to female to plug in both speakers, it's like an audio splitter; however, there is a 9 pin cable cord called a mini-din, but it has 9 pins, and it goes from the Logitech speakers, but there is no place in the back of my computer for 9 pins. Are my mom's logitech speakers only compatible with her old computer?

There is a little remote that came with the Logitech speakers, that has a volume knob and power button, and that will not turn on, since you need to put the 9 prong cable in, which my computer doesn't have.

The Logitech still sounded nice for how old it was, pretty decent for how cheap it was too.

I have a power bar plugged into an outlet, so I have the space for the cords for both sub woofers, which plug into an outlet. Just having trouble connecting that one cable from the Logitech, and I don't even know if I can use both the speaker system on the same sound card I got for my New school gateway I got 2 years ago.
Is there something like a Y audio cable for 9 pin Mini-Din's or some type of connector device with usb attachment I can hook the 9 Pin Mini-Din up to, to plug the other end of the attachment to my computer?
It is actually this I got to connect the 2 speaker systems to same computer... 6 inch Audio "Y" Splitter Cable - 3.5mm Female to Left and Right Males

What number speakers are needed 5.1 or recent 7.1? Is it better to go with "all-in-one" system like Bose or mix and match with specific receiver and speaker system?

Answer
This depends on you and your environment. 5.1 does fine for most but 7.1 will be more emersive. All in one systems never match up to separates but are less expensive ( aside from Bose) If you want a system in the Bose price range look for the Energy "Classic" Take 5 system. This was called the "Bose Killer" a few years ago. It used to be $900 for the speaker system w/sub but was recently rereleased at about $500 and still hold up very well. At the time when I worked at the good guys! in the audio department 9 out of 10 people who came in asking for Bose when they came in bought the Take 5 after listening to both. You can get a fully featured receiver to go with it for about $500. The Sony STRDG910 gets good reviews. This would make a great starter system and includes great Blu-Ray connectivity. If you want to spend a little more look into Denon or Yamaha receivers and better Energy, Paradigm or Definitive Technology speakers.
I think what "He Who" means is that Dolby Digital is the standard audio format for HD broadcast. It isn't all 5.1 necesarily. It can be 5.1, 4.0, 2.0 or even 1.0 (unlikely but is a possibility with Dolby Digital.) DVDs go up to 6.1 and BD movies up to 7.1.

I have a STR-DB840. What is better to use for the input jacks: 5.1 channel input (I have a surround sound system) or the Digital Optical input?

Answer
You usually don't bother with the individual channel inputs unless you have another device that can decode a surround sound signal and output the discrete channels.

Otherwise, just let your receiver do that work, and use the optical input. Your receiver may also support digital coax, which carries the same signal, but uses a high quality RCA cable (usually colored orange) instead of the plastic fiber that optical uses. Most DVD players will support both optical and digital coax. Makes no difference which one you use.

Remember, this is only for devices that support surround sound. Things like your old VCR, for instance, will only do stereo (red/white RCA cables) so it won't have an optical output. This is still OK - you can use the normal stereo cables, and the receiver will only use the front speakers. This will still give you a better sound than what your TV's speakers produce.

Will my 360 have surround sound if I plug my speaker system into my TV?

Or does the speaker system need to be plugged directly into my 360? My 360's connected to my TV via HDMI, if that make a difference.

Assuming your surround sound has optical input the best connection would be xbox to TV via HDMI and xbox to surround sound via optical cable

One thing you might want to check is the sound card option related to the digital audio output. Not sure what kind of speaker system you used before but try changing that option and see what you get. Also make sure the speakers are plugged into the speaker output. On my Dell, the mic input is adjacent to the speaker jack and is also the same size and I have gotten them mixed up before.

Hello. I drive a 2012 chevy Impala, and have an iPhone 4. Whenever I recieve a call, it goes to the car speakers so is there any way, I could listen to music through bluetooth? Thank you

Answer
Bluetooth has several different modes. In order to play music, your Impala's bluetooth must support A2DP. According to GM's web site. Both the iphone 4 and 4s are compatible with your 2012 Impala's sound system and so should be able to stream audio. Have you tried playing music while your phone is paired?

http://gmtotalconnect.com/compatible-devices/?make=Chevrolet&year=2012&model=Impala&radio=Gen%209

addendum. After posting my original answer I went back to look at the chart provided. I just noticed that the 4 and 4s White do not have the check mark for audio. Seems strange that the White ones aren't supported as color should not matter. I think you need to talk to your dealer about this to clear it up. I don't have a good answer for you. Sorry.

Answer
It is all very budget dependent. Here is a nice $1000 part set if putting it together yourself, and be sure to watch youtube videos and work on a non-static flat big surface and wear gloves or ground yourself and never force things together.

CPU Intel Core i5-3570K 3.4GHz 4 cores, 4 threads since gaming does not use hyperthreading nor more than 4 cores.
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-overclock,3106-5.html
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler - a good value for overclocking the CPU. It is tall, but very efficient and priced well.
Asus P8Z77-V LK ATX LGA1155 Motherboard - supports overclocking, and has 2 slots of pciex16 to possibly add a second GPU in SLI at another time for crossfiring instead of replacing the graphics card as you would in a 1 slot system.
G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 The right amount for gaming in the right speed for the CPU and is a good brand 1.5V with heat spreader in CAS 9
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive - fairly reliable bulk storage in a good size of a terrabyte
Sandisk 64GB 2.5" Solid State Disk - to hold Windows and a few games for fast load and top performance. Can use half in partition for Intel RST/SRT HDD acceleration if preferred.
Video Card Galaxy GeForce GTX 660 2GB - Highly rated solid performer. I did not look up its status for SLI vs crossfire
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/660?vs=548
Cooler Master Storm Enforcer ATX Mid Tower Case - Nice looking case with good air flow and roomy. Starts with only 2 fans as adequate, but could add a top fan. There are many good choices of cases. Has USB 2 and 3 and audio ports.
Rosewill Green 630W 80 PLUS Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply
Decent enough as a single rail (one +12V as preferred) with a 6 and 6+2 pcie connector set and since GTX 660 needs only one, should be enough for crossfire one day without changing it. 50A (600 watts) on 12V to power GPU, CPU, fans and disk drives. There are better and worse PSUs but this is surely at least adequate and more.
Lite-On iHAS124-04 DVD/CD Writer - any DVDRW
Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 (OEM) (64-bit)
gamers prefer Win 7
Still need keyboard, mouse, audio output (speakers/headphones), and a display

Answer
well friend, building your own is the best way to get a decent gaming PC that can let you play all games on mid settings and some on high settings on 1080p. The price is around $700-$800 =P

here is an example:

Intel Core i3-2120 Sandy Bridge 3.3GHz LGA 1155 65W Dual-Core Desktop Processor Intel HD Graphics 2000 BX80623I32120 - $120

GIGABYTE GA-H61M-DS2 LGA 1155 Intel H61 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - $54

ALTEC LANSING BXR1220 2.0 Speaker System - $22

Acer S201HLbd Black 20" 5ms LED-Backlight LCD monitor 250 cd/m2 ACM 12,000,000:1 (1000:1) - $100

Logitech Wireless Combo MK260 920-002950 Black 8 Function Keys USB RF Wireless Standard Keyboard and Mouse - $30

Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM - $100

TOTAL : $767 ($742 after rebate), this is the lowest build that I would like to recommend to you, this build is very decent, it can let you play games on mid-high settings including BF3 (mid settings) =P

But if you could get an HD6870 ($145 after rebate) then it would be better, can let you play games on high-max settings. BUT you also have to change to 600w +80 Branded PSU.

Hi guys and gals,

I've got a budget of about £300 to buy a speaker system.

I've been looking and all the decent systems have blu-ray players included. I don't need one as I have a PS3 which is more than capable and it seems silly to waste money on another blu-ray player.

I know the PS3 needs an digital optical input and was also looking for the possibility of rear wireless speakers!

Any suggestions would be exceedingly appreciated :)

Thank you very much

Answer
I managed to get a Sony Receiver and speakers (5.1) for £299 but this model is no longer being made. It has 2hdmi in and one hdmi out which is great for the PS3. you may be able to look around and find a similar deal.

What do i need in order to hook up a PC sound system to my flatscreen tv?

Mitch

Flatscreen: Apex 32" Class 720p 60Hz LCD HDTV -
PC sound system: Logitech LS21 2.1 Stereo Speaker System
I'm trying to connect them along with my PS3.

Answer
Your HDTV is a 5.1 device.

Your computer speakers are 2.1.

See the problem? You need something that will decode the optical from the HDTV as 5.1, then "cripple" the sound by down-converting it to 2.0. Then you need something that will connect the output to the headphone jacks which are standard on computer speakers.

Basically - it wont work, some asian company may make a device for this but it's not common or popular, and computer gear is NOT room filling or made to hook to home theater gear.

Thats 3 strikes I'm afraid.

I'm buying a 2011 Lancer SE (without the fosgate 9 speaker system) next spring. What kind of after-market audio system do you recommend between 300$ - 1000$ and why? (Including subwoofer, car deck and amplifier. Speakers are optional if they fit in the price range.)
Thanks for the links, DA 1-2 B. I'm thinking of getting a sound quality system, for enjoying music, loudness is not really important.

Can I turn a positive/negative speaker leaded system into a headphone jack?

Courageous

I just got a set of very nice speakers, however they end in plus/minus wiring. The exposed leads of silver and copper for old systems. How can I enable these speakers for use in the widely accessible 3.5mm headphone style jacks?

Answer
As TV guy stated, you will need an amplifier. The reason the speakers don't have headphone jack leads is because they are not compatible with headphones and aren't meant to be plugged into them.

The output of your MP3 player (or other devices using 3.5mm outputs) produce such a low wattage signal that trying to power your speakers would be like trying to run your television off a AA battery. An amplifier must be used to boost the signal.

This is what computer speakers come in handy. They have internal amplifiers, which is why they need to be plugged into a power outlet.

2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited speaker system upgrade suggestions?

speaker system for jeep image

Hi I have a 2006 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited and I was wondering what good speakers could I put in. I don't want anything to to expensive but I'll pay for good quality speakers. I have the 4 speaker system. Should I modify the speakers mount to hold bigger speakers. I am not looking for too much bass but I like bass also the sound quality. When I'm driving down the highway it sounds horrible. Also I want I try to keep the factory headunit. And also would it be good to put a small amp to power the speakers. Thanks

Answer
whenever i get a new car my upgrade process goes :
big 4ch amp --> sound deadener --> headunit --> sub --> front speakers

ill power the front 2 speakers off of 2 channels of the amp and leave the rear speakers un amplified. i'll use the other 2 channels for a sub when i get one.

then ill make sure nothing rattles, you probably get a lot of road noise on the highway? a properly deadened vehicle is pretty close to silent at speed. http://www.sounddeadenershowdown.com read for an hour or so. i usually only "cld" or dynamat and skip the mlv and ccf but you may want to look into it because of your noise issue.

ill skip the headunit part cause you don't want one

next ill add a sub. you can't have a decent sounding system without a sub. I'm not talking some monstrous beast of a sub, just a 8-12 inch 300- 500 watt rms subwoofer in a sealed box.

finally i'll add some speakers. i usually need them at this point beacause my stockers have been blown to absolute hell by a ridiculously overpowered amplifier. i usually choose a home audio speaker from parts-express.com with and make sure it's an alright fit for my amp and also make sure it has really low inductance, which effects how "punchy" the bass is. for simplicity's sake, ill just recommend a component set. i'll do up a mock system for you:

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_20406_Soundstream_RUB5800.aspx
found this nice 5 channel amp, you can run all your speakers (front and rear) and a sub off this

http://www.onlinecarstereo.com/CarAudio/p_12655_Dynamat_10455.aspx
can be found a lot cheaper on ebay

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_18896_Infinity-Reference-860W.html
good little sub at a good price

http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_12260_JBL-P660C.html
front speakers, not sure what size speaker your jeep is, i guessed at 6.5

with that amp you can add an amplified set to the rear aswell, go coax for a budget speaker, go component if you will have lots of people in the back and can spare the cash.

email me through yahoo if you have any questions, just click my name and send me an email!

How to change a Passive Subwoofer to a Powered subwoofer in a Phillips Home Theater System?

I currently have a 1000 watt Phillips home theater system and would like to get rid of the passive subwoofer and put in a powered subwoofer. The phillips system does not have component audio outputs. It only has the two small speaker wires that go to the subwoofer. Please let me know how I can hook up a powered subwoofer to this system.

Answer
As others have said you can't do much to an all-in-one system ... and changing to a powered subwoofer won't do anything for the midrange and treble, or for the power/loudness. So making the change you propose is questionable at best (You would be wiser to buy a better system)

That said, the other answers saying you can't change to a powered subwoofer are (probably ... it depends if the system is sending full spectrum sound to the main speakers) WRONG. If the powered sub has speaker input terminals (in addition to RCA input(s)) you can. These usually take the form of two sets of speaker input terminals (left and right), and two output terminals (left and right). The sub has a crossover built in, and by running the wires from your HT for the right an left front speakers to the sub, and then new wires from the left and right output terminals on the sub to the right and left front speakers (being careful to respect polarity to maintain phasing) you can get the powered sub to work. In essence the full range audio goes to the sub crossover, the bass notes are split off to the sub amplifier and from there to the sub speaker, and the mid and treble notes are sent on to the front right and left speakers. See the link for a picture of a typical sub interface panel.

Note that you need to make sure the HT is sending full frequency sound to the front speakers (use the "Large" option if there is one in the speaker setup). Your system probably doesn't have this setting, but more than likely you are getting bass sent to the main speakers and the above will work. If it doesn't you can either return the sub or use it with a new upgraded system (your best choice anyway).

Next time provide details of model not just brand!

Hope that helps.

Answer
Unfortunately, many HTIB systems and other similar home theater package systems just don't give you the flexibility that a modular system would give -the price you pay for budget-minded convenience. However, you should have an AUX OUT or an alternative AUDIO OUT that you may use as a SUB OUT. Even the CENTER OUT would work if you have one on your HTS.

Or, as a couple of options, you could either get a higher efficiency/performance passive sub if you just need more performance, or add a subwoofer amplifier to your existing sub.

I have some recommendations for excellent examples of powered (and greater performance passive) subwoofers at different price levels for you to put on your short list...

Happy listening!
