Q. I have RCA RT2910 1000W Home Theater System. the amp/box will not fully sustain power, the red power/standby light fades/flashes in a non-repetitive pattern. there are no external fuses. ive checked under the power bored, no burns/damage. the previous owner ran non-stock extra speakers also. ive been told the problem may be a transformer, diode, or bridge. EMAIL:mbg757@gmail.com if need any other info.

I have a RCA Home Theatre System, RT-2280?

jdviper9

It puts out 80 watts per channel at 8ohms and I am wondering what is the most powerfull speaker I could add to the system. For example could I connect a pair of Floor Speakers with a max of 100 watts or should I connect something that is lower than 80watts?

Answer
speakers are rated to a max input power so say a 300W speaker would be OK even 1000W would be OK, but not a 50W.

Next I think a new receiver is a good idea, but if you want new speakers check the sensitivity rating 20Hz to 20kHz look for a speaker that has a higher rating, i.e a speaker rated at 86 db sensitivity will sound halve as loud as a 89 db speaker ( 3 db meaning twice the spl) . the best mid priced speaker I have found for this issue is Klipsch with 91db- 103db.

But these can sound a little bright unless paired with a Denon receiver or Adcom separates. You should upgrade both to get the most out of the speakers but better speakers are the best to get first.

How to 5.1 car audio surround sound system?

best speaker system for classical music

best speaker system for classical music image

Lyricalyjy

Hello,
i've been doing some research on car audio systems for sisters birthday but im a bit stuck.
my sister loves classical music and listening to them (really loud) in her car while shes going to work or in any occasions.

So for her birthday im planning on upgrading her car audio system (in a tight budget) to a decent level so that she can enjoy her music how it was suppose to sound like.

Ive did some research and from my opinion, getting a really good 5.1 or even 7.1 surround sound in a car is best for listening to classical music.

Can anyone please help me out on what I need to get and what I should shop for? I personally know how to do electrical wiring's and installations but have limited knowledge on sound systems.
I am a college student so im in a tight budget
thank you

Car: Altima Coupe 2009
Option: convenience package (i believe standard 6 speaker sound system *not Bose))

Answer
Are u sure 5.1 is the way to go? What is your source material? If its just CDs they were very probably recorded in stereo, classical or otherwise. You don't gain anything by running a stereo recorded track into a 5.1 system.
If you're going to replace the head unit with a DVD player then maybe. But then what is your sisters song collection? If its on cd and not DVD then again u may not want to spend the cash if she isn't going to make use of the benefits.

So next question, does she need a new head unit? Does she use some technology that isn't in her car now? Like if she uses her phone for music then she might like bluetooth. But if all she does is listen to CDs then she doesn't need a new head unit.
And know that the car engineers use eq and delay in the head unit to make the sound the best it can be. If u swap out the head unit then u will lose that advantage.

Plus a 5.1 system would assume you have a center channel speaker. Is that the case? Is there a place to put a center speaker in the dash?

So if I've talked you out of 5.1 and into stereo, and you want volume then you need to amplify the 6 speakers and add a subwoofer. The easy trick is to buy the wire harness adaptor to take speaker level off the back of head unit. Then you can run high level to the amp input and run amp output back to the dash to use the car wiring to get to the speakers.

You need to decide the amp wattage. There are plenty of reasonable 4 channel amps with about 100w per channel that will be a big step up. Like maybe kenwood kac2404s. And it would be worth it to pick kne with built in eq for each channel. At least if your sister has a sense for good audio its worth it. If its just volume then maybe not.
You will need to pick 6 speakers of power handling to match. Know that the instrument panel speakers are wired in parralel with the door speakers. Also the Nissan speakers are 2 ohm speakers. So that is a difference that Affects sound level. Check crutchfield for speakers that fit your car.

And u might as well pick a powered sub already in an enclosure. It's the easy route.

Good luck.

What are the very finest speakers for a home system?

Morgue Sme

I enjoy classical music and have just inherited my father's collection of 60+ years in mint condition. He threw in enough to buy fine speakers, but I'm clueless. What would you recommend. His system is 100% vacuum tubes and he was an audiophile to the MAX. Help me find the best speakers...cost no problem. THANKS!

Answer
Endevor is correct on some of the brands listed.

I will disagree with him on one note, the professional series of the Bose line are great sounding systems, not the prepackaged ones found in stores. I hate it when people have never gotten to hear the professional line of Bose and put them down.

As for me the best sounding speakers I have ever heard are manufactured by a company called Induction Dynamics.
http://www.inductiondynamics.com/
They have designed a system that is not like any other speaker manufacture out there. Each pair of speakers is sonically matched, and they have a crossover design that is amazing.

I have a 2.1 speaker system with external volume and bass control, connected to my computer. I want to know if it has inbuilt amplification. There are no specifications on the speakers. If you have any good knowledge on this any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
It is a Dell 2.1 speaker system. The sub woofer is pretty big compared to the speakers and there is a long thick wire that comes out of the sub woofer that is connected to the volume and bass control.

Answer
Since you are saying it has volume controls on the speaker boxes (possibly on the subwoofer/bigger speaker enclosure), it makes sense that it has a built in amplifier.

Please provide more details of the model# /name/brand. You may get a better answer.

Two volume control speakers on my computers sound system?

Robert

I have a few extra speakers from a surround sound system for my PC, and I want to use them on another surround sound system I have. One of the speakers is a volume control/power control speaker, and I want to know if it's okay to have it plugged into my sub along with the volume/power control speaker that's made for the system, just so I can use it as another speaker. Any tips?

Answer
Yes, you can go for another working speaker for your PC....

Good luck!

The connector for the right speaker works (the red one) but the one on the left doesn't (the white one) I know it's not the speaker because I plugged the speaker that didn't work into the port of the working speaker and it worked. It's a Philips MMS171 2.1 Channel Speaker system with Subwoofer. Also where can I go to get it fixed?

Answer
Take the entire system to a local audio / video repair shop
(so that it can be properly tested after the repair is completed)
and ask for an estimate.

The cost will vary depending on the exact requirements of the repair.

On a logitech z-2300 computer speaker system, is it possible to use different speakers with the system?

typerhedli

I have a logitech z-2300 system. The right speaker died about two months ago. Im wondering if its possible to use different speakers with the system. The subwoofer is amazing on this thing but the speakers just didnt cut it. Its a single rca connection for each speaker into the subwoofer.

Answer
Well, I would say yes. Although the 'specs' on the web site are not very detailed, it is clear (from the single RCA jack on each speaker to the Sub) that your power amp is built into the Sub enclosure. So, any two, non powered satellite speakers that can handel 80 w each will do.

Not a problem.

i have a 2.1 Altec Lansing 15 Watt system with a standard 3.5 mm input and a 80s Infinity RS-9 2 speaker system. I want to hook them up together. Is it just a matter of wiring or do i need a receiver as well?

Answer
You might be able to get away with buying a speaker distribution box and plugging the output of the Altecs into that, then wiring all the speakers into the box, but it's going to be very underpowered at 15 watts.
You really need a receiver to power those Infinity's.

What kind of sound system should I purchase?

jennannej

Haven't had a sound system since I moved halfway across the country 4 years ago! I don't even know what the options ARE any more! Obviously, I'd like something for CD/radio. I also know now they have options for streaming, bluetooth, etc. I have a Sony Laptop and an iPhone I could potentially use to hook up to. Don't want to spend a lot of money, but want something with decent sound (for use, for example, during a small party).

I am so lost, not even knowing where to start. Help!

Answer
You can still find practically any kind of sound system, at any of several price points. Generally, for the DOLLAR SPENT, the fewer channels driven, and fewer gimmicks included, the better quality.of basics you should expect. So, it depends. Stereo good enough for you? Five channel ? Do you really need seven channel sound? Nine speakers sound like overkill to you? Pay to play radio? or is FM good enough? Usually more bang for the buck comes from receivers, like it always has. If mid-level audio is good enough for you. If you feel the need for more than bookshelf sized speakers, the price increases pretty dramatically. Most modern receivers will allow almost any device to jack in, whether I pads, pass through dvd hookups, whatever, though there is some variation in the market. Look for solid brand names, and listen to a few units at a shop with a good listening room. Be sure and get complete system quotes, and check likely purchases on the net, wherever, for reviews and price before you invest. Ask questions while shopping. Laptop sound is usually pretty bad, comparatively, so I wouldn't (besides running out your batteries all the time) recommend using that as your primary sound system, and powered house speakers of any note are not cheap, offer very little in terms of bass treble or other controls, and such a mix wont get you airwave FM, either. Generally any audio device with a "low" or preamp output jack can be jacked in to any receiver with the right chord. You needn't bother with an all in one thingy. the speakers provided are usually poor ly built and nothing special in terms of sound. Many of the supplied "Bass Units" supplied barely manage to go even as deep crisply as an average mid-market bookshelf speaker. Most bookshelf speakers play loudly down to about 50 hz or so, and produce some level of sound down to 23 hz. Your video DVD or Blueray player, for example, can be jacked right in and will certainly play your CDs just fine. As for brands, Onkyo makes solid inexpensive units, a stereo Sherwood Rx 4105 sells for under a hundred bucks new, a Yamaha Rx a3020 9.2 channel for about 2000 bucks. There's an alphabet of brands. Choose at least good performing speakers, better built ones will "rap" tightly when knocked on, cheap ones will "rap" hollowly, Audition your choices sound before you purchase anything. Usually best to buy the same speaker all the way around, because each speaker brand/model has its distinct timbre. Not buying the same all around will make some stand out. Factory matched sets are already balanced, of course. But hear your choices live.

Answer
Tv today are not capable of powering any speaker. They only have an optical audio output, which has to be connected to a receiver or a home theater in a box with an optical audio input. This signal is a digital signal that has to be decoded by a Dolby Digital decoder. There are some sound bars that are capable of connecting to a tv. Hope this will help you out.

Can anyone help me. I want to buy a home theatre speaker system that gives the best sound quality.

Answer
I don't think you mean the absolute best. However what sound you get is dependent on your budget.

A good entry level system can run a few hundred to a couple of thousand dollars.

High end systems can easily reach several hundred thousand.

So really you need to be more specific in your application, budget, expectations,etc.. to really get a good idea of what to get.

Where can I find a good Speaker system for a 2500 sq ft room?

Peanut Ash

The room that I need it for is a little bit more than 2500 square feet. I want a speaker system with 4-8 speakers. No sub woofer is required, and they should be able to get pretty loud. Budget is around $600
Speakers are going to be hung from the ceiling, and don't need to be that big. Will be hooked up to existing soundsystem in adjacent room. The room is kind of a cafe'/Rec room, so nothing too bulky

Answer
You don't need 4 to 8 speakers for that size room. If you get 2 PA type speakers and a proper amp, that is all you need. If you plan to connect mics, you'll need some type of mic mixer too.

speakers:

Amp with mic mixer:

This system will get plenty loud for that sized room. You can connect any audio source to the powered mixer - ipod - cd player - mics - whatever

I have 2.1 speakers, and am currently planning on purchasing new Klipsch 2.0 speakers for my apartment. However, while I am at home, I'd like to use both sets of speakers and take advantage of my 5.1 sound card if possible, and use my combined set at 4.1 sound. Is there anything that can combine the two sets together and have the computer recognize them as a 4.1 speaker system rather than simply two 2 speaker sets?
And don't just tell me I can. I'd like to know how please.
Hmm.. in response to Ginny M, it is true that there doesn't seem to be any movies or games that advertise as having 4.1 sound.. I never thought about that, but I do know that 4.1 speakers are sold.. for some reason..
In response to Robert, I'd like one set to act at the front left and right speakers, and the other to act as the rear left and right speakers, like true 4.1 sound. I already know how to set up all four speakers as 2.1 sound.

Answer
I kinda rigged something up like you about 2 years ago. I had the klipsch pro media 2.1 computer speakers and also a pair of bose acoustimass speakers. I wanted to hook them all up but on the back of my sub, there were only 2 spots to put the wires in since it was a 2.1 system. So then I just put 2 audio cables in each spot. The left speaker slot had both the klipsch and bose wires in it and the right had both klipchs and bose as well. It worked and all 4 speakers came through great. Then I found a setting in my sound card to make 4.1 sound but I didn't really notice any difference with that setting. It just sounded better because i was able to put speakers in all 4 corners of the room instead of 2. I did end up blowing out a bose speaker, but I think that was just because I played my music really loud. Im not sure if it is bad for the speakers/sub to do this, but it worked out fine for me.

Monster Beat box or audioengine 5 speakers?

century81

I want a speaker system for my new apartment that I can play an ipod out of. The beatbox is an actual ipod speaker dock. The audioengine 5 speakers can be connected to your ipod or computer. Has anyone owned either? I have read that they both sound amazing, I just wanna hear from someone what their input is.

Answer
I haven't owned either. I can tell you this. The beatbox will not give you the stereo separation of Audioengine 5 speakers, if for no other reason, one box is sufficiently challenged to do produce a dynamic sound stage. If you closed your eyes I doubt you can really go wrong. However, my money would be on the Audioengine 5. I think Audioengine is the better company with the better product.

Best.

I have tried multiple speaker systems and the same thing happens every time. It sounds kind of like it gets ahead of itself. Can it be the sound card there is something wrong with? Please help me. Thank you :)

Answer
This seems to be a latency problem. That's when there's a time lag between the sound being initiated and you hearing it.

It's not likely to be the speaker system that's causing this, but the sound card, or the driver to it.

I started to write details but ran out of space....
then found a web site that gives you all the information:

Which catagory of enigineering does speaker design fall into?

Q. Who designs speakers? Which catagory of enigineering does speaker design fall into? Where is the best place to study? What does the job intail, and how much does it pay?

Answer
Loudspeakers (including transducers) are and have been traditionally designed by electrical engineers. To the best of my knowledge no college or university classifies âloudspeaker engineeringâ as its own formal engineering discipline. Rather it is a subset of audio engineering and both are specialized fields within the larger formal discipline of electrical and electronics engineering, or simply âelectrical engineering.â

As with most specialized engineering fields there are other disciplines that play varying yet significant roles. In the case of loudspeaker design and engineering such disciplines include acoustics (which is a specialized subset of physics,) mechanical engineering, materials science and the obligatory prerequisite - mathematics.

The best schools to prepare you for such a profession will be those that are not only fully accredited but also offer a strong electrical and electronics engineering curriculum. My recommendation is that you avail yourself of all the resources that are available from each of the professional organizations listed below in order to find the detailed educational information that is the most appropriate for your needs and expectations.

I am a very strong advocate of the community college, aka junior college, system for the first two or three years of a studentâs basic scholastic curriculum. Upon completing a two-year program, and preferably obtaining an Associate of (Arts and) Science degree, you can then transfer to an accredited four-year university or college of your choice to complete the remainder of your undergraduate curriculum. That said, due to intense competition over a fairly limited number of job opportunities, you may be better served if you take the time to pursue a graduate degree* (i.e., at least a MSEE degree,) in order to increase your odds of finding employment in the profession in which youâre interested, i.e., loudspeaker engineering. On a related note, given the opportunity you should always take advantage of the multitude of internships that may come your way, especially those from companies that employ engineers or scientists in your desired profession.

The job responsibilities and pay will vary depending upon numerous factors including: your level of education, work experience, employer, geographical location, as well as the health of the job market, i.e., economic factors, including the demand and level of competition at any given period in time. For more detailed information the professional organizations listed below regularly publish salary surveys for various engineering disciplines and levels of job experience.

By the way, if youâre truly serious about a career in audio engineering I highly recommend membership in each of the organizations listed above.

Where can I get a sound system for my iPhone with portable speakers?

speaker system for iphone 5 image

Codi

I want a dock for my iPhone 4s, possibly a 5 in the future. I want the dock to be like a stereo and have at least two speakers that I can place in different spots around my room..(So I can rock out)
If you get the idea, then give me a few on where I can get a cool one!

Answer
Ebay.com and Walmart.com could be a good start! I got mine from there.

Why does the iPhone 5 cost so much more than the iPod touch?

Q. They're both available in 16GB/32GB/64GB yet the unlocked iPhone 5 cost $649/$749/$849 when the iPod touch is only $229/$299/$399. I thought the iPod touch was "The iPhone without the phone." Why is it $420-$500 cheaper?

Answer
Well the iPhone 5 has a better camera, LTE, 3G, and 2G antennas, A6 chip for faster processing, longer battery life, triple microphone system, louder speaker, more RAM, and the earpiece. They're pretty much the same thing, but since the iPhone is a phone it's going to cost a lot more to get an unlocked version, which is why they make the iPod touch. Most people get their iPhone 5 on contract for $199 which is cheaper than the iPod touch, but you have a monthly bill. Which, like I said, is why they make the iPod touch.

Colin

I have a decent 5.1 speaker system for a PC. I no longer use the PC but use a laptop and do not want to buy a new speaker system if there is some device out there which will allow me to run the 5.1 . Yes I am aware that I will only receive sereo from the laptop.

Answer
Not that I'm aware of unless the laptop has a super sound card built in that has the drivers needed to support 5.1. You might want to post this in computer instead of home theater. Too many people think this is where all the geeks hang out, but that is not the case. Try computers.

How does speech-recognition software compare to an expert lip-reader in accuracy?

BillieBob

Clearly the lip-reader has the disadvantage of needing to see the speaker speak.
In a noisy restaurant however it is the computer that would be unable to translate.
So given a lip-reader that can see the speaker in a room together with a speech-
recognition system which one is more accurate?
Has the hearing-impaired community embraced this new technology and if so do they carry a portable system with them?

Answer
Technology has come a long way. EX my phone's voice recognition software is superb and cuts out background noise. I was blaring rammstein and spoke a text message to my girlfriend and it worked. Its a Motorola Droid btw.

What should I get, the Droid Razr or the iPhone 4?

Taylor

I have a mac computer, so it makes me want to just stick with apple and get an iPhone, but the Droids seem really cool! Any experience with these phones?

Answer
The Razr has a big screen and has the ability to store stuff on micro SD cards, which all iPhones lack.

Neither Android or the iPhone are âbetterâ than the other at everything, both have their own pros and cons.
I personally have a Motorola Droid 2 Global, but I have sold cell phones for the last year and a half, and I have a bit of experience with both Android and iPhone, as well as Blackberry.

Android Pros:
Variety of phone types at a variety of price points and layouts
SD Card slots in most models
Some models have physical keyboards
There are some rugged Android phones (the Casio Commando is a good example)
Most models support Flash.
The operation of various versions of Android are fairly similar.

Android Cons:
No standardized revision
Some models never get operating system updates after 6 months on the market
The lower end models are mostly garbage (like the LG Ally, LG Optimus, and anything by Pantech)
Fewer (if any) custom accessories for each phone model
Open system is more prone to outside attack
No ready interface with iTunes

iPhone Pros:
Crisp Display
iTunes interface (you can use the iPhone as an iPod)
Great sounding speakers (for an item this size)
Better User Interface
Closed system lends a bit better system stability and security (in theory)

iPhone Cons:
Small screen
No physical keyboard
Easily Broken (compared to other contemporary phones)
High Cost
Frequently stolen
Also is known as a âcultâ object.
Frequently does not live up to the commercials
Over-hyped.

I`m using logitech x-230 speaker. I need to swap my left speaker to right speaker and my right speaker to my left speaker. Is there any software that can do this without any wiring or hardware change?
Not sure why you just can't switch your speakers to either side of your monitor?

well, for the x-320 speaker, the headphone jack and the volume is in the right of the speaker, but i want it on the left so i can control the volume easily from my bed when im listening to music(my bed is on the left side. please help me
someone please???

Answer
http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=9066

The best you are going to be able to do with this system is to simply move the right speaker nearest your bed and left speaker away from the bed. This will still leave the channels reversed, so you can go into control panel, and reverse the channels there.

I'm looking to buy a nice pair of speakers for my laptop what to get? Need Good Bass & Quality.. $80 or less?

I currently own Logitech X 230 but they broke a wire problem so i need a new pair

How do I set up a wireless speaker system in my apartment?

How do I set up a wireless speaker system in my apartment?
So I've got a desktop PC with wireless internet. I want to get speakers in my lounge/diner and in my bedroom that will play the music from my PC e.g. itunes/spotify.
Is it possible? Is it complicated?

Answer
You can buy wireless speakers which have a transmitter which plugs into e pc audio socket and receivers in the speakers.

Or you could buy a video sender, and ignore the picture part of it, plug the audio into the pc and plug some speakers Into the receiver end.

Or you could use Bluetooth, depending how far away the receiver needs to be (usually 10m or 30ft maximum). You can buy bluetooth speakers or an adapter (Belkin do one) that you can plug existing speakers into, If your PC doesn't have Bluetooth you can buy a USB Bluetooth adapter very cheaply.

On the other hand, all these are a bit expensive and diddly. It ought be easier to buy an iPod or other mp3 player and plug it into speakers in each room whe you need them.

I'm not sure that you'll be able to play to several sets of speakers at once whatever you do. Certainly not using Bluetooth.

Can i connect two different speaker systems to play one song?

vgab1626

O.K so I have an iHome speaker and my friend has a JBL speaker. At parties one of the speakers is never enough, so i'm wondering if its possible to have a cord connecting the two speakers systems so that the ipod playing on one of the systems can play on the other as well. Both speakers have audio-in and video-out holes on the back.

Why use 6-speaker systems if humans have only two ears?

6 speaker system

6 speaker system image

Alex N

Well most of us have 2 ears. I personally haven't seen anybody with 6 ears (and one big subwoofer ear). Why do we need these 6/8-speaker systems?

Answer
Because our two ears allow us to determine from what direction a sound is coming.

Are there any potential risks with getting a sound system installed in my new car?

David M

I just got a 2012 Honda Civic. Would getting a 6 speaker/subwoofer +amp system in my car have any negative consequences or risks? The car has only 4 speakers and the sound quality is mediocre. I love music, and feel disappointed every time I listen to the stock radio/speakers. I am looking at getting Polk Speakers and a Kicker subwoofer and amp and a hd radio. All told it would be 1,000 or slightly more. Would getting that installed affect the electrical system/engine/battery/computers in the car/warranty etc.?
The Geek Squad at Best Buy would be the ones installing it. With them doing it, would there be any risk?

Answer
If you take it to the right people probably not. Make sure to do some good research of audio/custom car care centers in your area.
