How to build speakers from scratch?

Hallie_Mae

I am doing a school project. I was wondering how to build speakers from scratch. Will you guys give me any ideas?

Answer
Well as it is a school project I assume that you are going to attempt to build a driver - the actual transducer from scratch, to understand the electromagnetic principles involved. Not a finished speaker system that one would put into use in their living room.
You should do some of the research yourself for a better learning experience. Here is the Wikipedia site for loudspeakers:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loudspeaker
There is a lot there but the basic concept is well explained in "Driver Design."
Given that, your main concern is what materials to use and how to find them.
First you will need a magnet. A refrigerator magnet will not do. It's just too weak. If you can take apart an old hard drive you will find an extremely powerful rare Earth magnet. Barring that you can purchase inexpensive ceramic magnets at Radio Shack. If you can find a strong magnet laying around the house or if you teacher can provide one, so much the better.
The diaphragm or "cone" is the business end. It need not be cone shaped - we aren't building a high fidelity speaker here. The key factors are rigidity - stiffness - and light weight. The stiffer and lighter it is, the better it will perform. You need not use paper. Thin Styrofoam makes a good flat plate diaphragm. Craft stores sometimes stock it. The larger it is the more sound it will transfer to the air.
The voice coil is the electrical part. In a conventional speaker it is a coil of thin wire wound on a bobbin. The bobbin is cylindrical and surrounds the core of the magnet separated by a tiny space. This space is called the "magnetic gap" and is the area where the magnetic field is strongest. However you need not do it that way. If you get a coil of wire within the magnet's field it will respond. However the stronger the field the better. You can make a flat coil of wire and get it as close as possible without touching. Important things to consider are the thickness and length of the wire. The type of wire commonly used is called "armature wire." It is copper (usually) and is covered with enamel insulation. If you can get some that is the best stuff to use. Radio Shack may sell it as well. However any thin gauge insulated wire (I'd recommend no thicker than 26 gauge) will work. The total length of the coiled up wire is important because that will determine the speaker's electrical impedance. This is important because you will have to drive that speaker with some kind of amplifier. Amplifiers are designed to drive speakers within a given impedance range, usually between 4 Ohms and 16 Ohms. Connecting a speaker of 2 Ohms, for example, will cause such an amplifier to overheat and destroy itself or trigger a protection circuit. You will need to measure the coil's impedance with an Ohm meter. Your teacher should provide one. If he / she doesn't, inexpensive multi-meters (which will measure impedance) can be had at home improvement stores and radio Shack. They are really handy to have around and are a good investment. Given this, you will need to know what kind of amplifier the speaker will be driven by and what impedance it will tolerate. Between 6 and 10 Ohms is usually a safe bet.
The speaker will need some kind of frame to hold the diaphragm - voice coil - magnet assembly in their proper positions. This can be made, for your purposes, out of virtually anything that is strong enough. You may be able to cobble something together out of wood, plastic, metal and glue it together with hot glue, epoxy or any appropriate glue. If you have a parent or someone who has tools like drills, saws and possibly even welding equipment it would be of great advantage. The frame must hold the diaphragm only by it's edges. In conventional speakers the intermediate structure between the diaphragm and frame is called the "surround" and is flexible while holding the diaphragm centered. You really don't need a surround for your purposes as they are really only used to allow the diaphragm to move around a lot for bass response. I'm guessing that you aren't too concerned about that.
Last but not least is the enclosure. This is gone over in AVDADDY's link. However for your purposes you can get by by mounting your finished speaker on a flat panel or even in a shoe box. Again we aren't going for hi-fi here. The enclosure will give the sound it produces a little more fullness by containing the sound wave coming off the back of the diaphragm which, without some kind of enclosure, will cancel the wave coming from the front. This cancellation is more pronounced at lower frequencies.
Good luck. Hope you get an A.

Difference between active and passive speakers?

lwk362393

I'm a musician and just usually use amps, but as gigs get bigger I need to start adding monitors and speakers, but I don't know much about them.

Answer
Copied and pasted straight from WikiAnswers (http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_difference_between_a_passive_and_active_speaker_system): "An active system has amplifiers and electronic crossover built in to the cabinet.
A passive system has just the speakers and possibly a passive crossover (made up of capacitors and inductors) inside the cabinet. A passive system requires external amplifier(s) to work."

From http://www.mediacollege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1918: "Very simple, passive speakers need an amplifier for them to be useful, while active speakers have a built-in amplifier that requires electrical power and an audio signal."

And here is much more info that I don't understand (thought I didn't even try that hard): http://www.hometheaterhifi.com/volume_9_4/feature-article-active-speakers-12-2002.html

Good luck!

Need help with indoor sound system?

John

Need sound system for inside (not car) and need help?
Ok, so I basically know nothing about speakers or wiring or anything like that. Looking to get a nice sound system for Christmas and was gunna order it online (possibly amazon) today since it's cyber Monday.

I need something I can plug my phone into and will plug right into my wall (I was told I would need converters and other equipment, along with the amp and subs). I'm probably going to either want 12 or 15' subs. Not sure what amp or anything else that I'm going to need.

Basically what I'm asking is if there is anyway to just order whatever I need on amazon without really any wiring or advanced setup or anything. If there needs to be wiring, i guess it's fine bc I can get someone to do it but I'd rather not if I can help it. It would be really great if I could find a bundle online somewhere with everything included.

Also, would like to spend less than $500 if possible.

Fido IPhone Questions?

Mr.Rogers

Hello, I am fifteen years old and my current phone contract with Fido is going to be up in just a few months. I got the contract when I was 13 because I needed a phone for high-school. Anyway, I purchased a very basic flip phone and now that my contract is up my parents are willing to get me a nice one as a birthday gift.

I personally want to stay with Fido and am aiming at getting the IPhone 3G 16GB on a two year deal. I have read positive reviews and I really like the style, look and features of it. Also, I currently do not have a MP3 or MP4, so getting this phone can allow me to store some of my music and a few movies on it.

My questions are what exactly does the IPhone 3G offer? And how is it different from the ITouch besides the phone aspect of it? In order to use features such a GPS and so on do I have to sign a data plan? Or is it just free? Lastly, I do frequently listen to music on a daily basis for a small amount of time, but my question is would my IPhone 3G be suited to serve me as an MP4 as well? To listen to music and occasionally watch movies?

Best answer gets 10 points

Answer
I have an Ipod touch but know alot about the Iphone. There is alot of more features that the Iphone can do over the Ipod touch. The obvious one is the phone aspect. Also related to the phone it does text which the ipod cannot. It also works as a camera( unfortunately I do not beleive it does video recording yet unless there is an app from the appstore or a jailbroken app). Probably the best advantage to it though is some of the apps avaliable from the appstore. Many of them are not compatible with the Ipod Touch and only work with the iphone. For instance there is an app which lets you put your iphone only up to a speaker and it will detect the song it is playing. I know both the Ipod and Iphone have GPS capabilitys in them. They both include a Map system and street view and can locate where you are on certain applications that is all they have for the GPS capabilities so far, you may be able to get more I am not totally sure. I have about 6 movies and 200+ songs on my 8GB touch and have 1-2GB left so space is not a big issue. the iPhone 3G is an amazing device I bet you will love it.

Multi Room Speaker System?

mradigan74

I have a small house in which case I would want 5 speaker surround in the living room, a speaker in the master bedroom, a speaker in the guest bedroom, and a speaker outside on my deck. What is the best way to accomplish this? Best Buy says that you basically can't do it with the recievers that they sell, but that can't be right, is it?

Answer
1) Instead of a 'single' speaker in the other rooms, each room should have a 'stereo' pair of speakers...really

2) True: The majority of surround sound/multi-zone AV receivers cannot handle the combination of main+secondary speaker configurations as you are described, from the built-in amplifier. Some brand models offer amplifier support for the main room (5.1) plus an 1 additional pair of speakers (Zone 2) only

3) However, many AV receivers have outputs that can be connected to additional receivers or amps for additional speakers (multi-zone output)

4) Finally, there are impedance-matching volume controls or speaker selectors. These devices are designed to connect multiple speaker pairs to a single amp. NOTE: the receiver/amp must be rated to handle 2~4 ohm loads!

I'll refer you to these links for more details on a number of ways to run your setup. Start your research here:

Speaker system question?

jctendo

Alright so I bought a little cheap speaker system from walmart for 20 bucks that has 2 6.5 inch woofers abd 2 tweeters. I have 2 questions about it. First, it is 300 watts. Do I need an amp for it? My friend says I don't. Second of all. I am putting it in the trunk of a 4 door ford focus. The rear speaker are in the door though so is it easy to connect my system so it will work and my rear door speakers will work? I just don't see how I can get the wires back to the trunk. Any input?

Answer
I'm not quite clear if you're wanting to install these speakers in the front doors, rear doors, or in the trunk. But first question, 300 watts, wal-mart, it's more like maybe 150 watts RMS. Cheaper brands will ALWAYS advertise peak power, because it looks cooler. Understanding how an amplifier works compared to a factory deck would help you determine if you need an amplifier. Stock recievers in cars power very low wattage, and they don't have room enough for large capacitors that provide storage and power for speakers to get a louder and clearer sound. Think about it, if you have a home theater sound system, does it not sound better and clearer than your television? An upgrade of speakers alone in your car will make a difference, but an amplifier will make a huge difference too.
Secondly, the speaker wires are ran underneath your door trim pieces, they usually just snap off and then on again. With the wire tucked under these pieces you shouldn't notice really any speaker cables. If you don't feel comfortable installing them, most reputable car install shops will install a component speaker set of a woofer and a tweeter for between $40 and $60, and they usually do great work and gaurantee their installation. Where you paid $20 for your speakers, they're cheap, you may find it hard to justify having them installed. It's like a phrase I once heard "nice stuff generally isn't cheap, and cheap stuff generally isn't that nice." Take it for what it's worth, but I hope something I said was helpful.

Is a "single channel Amplifier" good for hooking up Bose 901 speaker system?

Mark Kollr

Today, I ordered a "SINGLE CHANNEL AMPLIFIER" online. It has 1500 watts. Would this Amp that I bought be good for hooking up Bose 901 speakers? And please tell me, â What is the difference between a "SINGLE CHANNEL AMPLIFIER", and a "MULTI CHANNEL AMPLIFIER"? And, can you please explain it to me as if I were a child? See, I'm not too good at knowing this kind of thing.
Thank you very much for your great answers.

Answer
"Stereo," in the simplest sense, means that the sound comes from two or more different locations. For example: If you are listening to a recording of a typical rock band - take the Grateful Dead for instance - Bob Weir's guitar will be on the left and Pigpen's keyboards will be on the right while Jerry Garcia's guitar and vocals will be centered.

This not only requires two speakers but two amplifiers to drive them. Most amplifiers are in reality two or more amplifiers built into the same chassis thus they are called "Stereo" or "Multi-channel" amplifiers.

Stereo (also called binaural) sound can not be achieved without using more than one speaker and the amplifiers to drive them.

Stereo sound was developed in the 1950's and was considered a huge breakthrough at the time. Single channel, or "monophonic" sound gave no spatial representation of the original performance and sounded "flat."

Over the years, a greater sense of depth was desired and various experiments were tried. The Bose 901 was one such attempt. The idea was to bounce sound all over the room to simulate the effect of a wider sound stage. This was only a rough simulation of the way sound acts in a room and was in no way a genuine representation of the original source. It is now considered outdated and far inferior to true, multi-channel surround sound. It has been discovered that bouncing sound off objects creates distortion and destroys the true soundstage. It has also been found that the most realistic soundstage comes not from a speaker which distributes its sound widely by reflecting it off objects but from speakers which act more as a single point in space - "point source speakers."

Thus to answer your question directly: No. It is not. Such will not give you accurate sound at all particularly considering spatial representation. The amplifier power of 1,500 watts (which is dubious) does not factor in the reproduction of accurate sound. You would be far better served with a lower power, high quality amplifier and a pair of modern speakers such as those made by Klipsch, B&W or Definitive Technology.

I have a Bose 901 speaker question? im new to these speakers but want something loud, how do i hook these up?

dorrnumber

to a normal reciever, yamaha 6.1, or cant i. i m looking to buy a set of series two with the eq what else do i need, im totally lost, wondering if im getting in over my head

Answer
You'll need a tape monitor or processor loop connection on your receiver to plug the equalizer into. Fewer and fewer surround sound receivers have this feature anymore. Also the active equalization from the Bose equalizer would be applied to all the speakers, not just the 901's. So your center, surround and subwoofer speakers would get the modified signal too. Bose recommends using the 901's for stereo sound, and more conventional speakers in surround systems. So if you are using the Yamaha 6.1 in 2-channel stereo and it has a tape monitor loop, you're ok. My brother has a set of 901's and doesn't run a surround system for these reasons. For more info, you can go to Bose's website and download the user manual for the 901's, in case you don't have one

I'd like an iPod dock or speaker system, so I'm looking into it. I have an iPod touch- I'm not sure if certain systems work only with certain iPods, so I thought I'd add that detail. I want something that's not so big, but definitely has great sound. As for price, nothing over $150. I'm not sure what the iHome is- how it's different from everything else, so it's be great if someone could clear that up too. Thanks!

best Iphone 4 speaker system?

dancingbug

whats a good speaker for the iphone 4 that i can put in my room thanks! :)

Answer
I own two speaker systems for my phone and my I really like the ihome speaker and alarm clock.
It's a really good quality speaker, especially since it's quite inexpensive for it's good quality.
a link to it bellow:
http://www.ihomeaudio.com/iP9BR/

but if your willing to spend afew big bucks for a speaker system, I would recommend checking out the Bose SoundDock. You can never go wrong with Bose. Alot of their stuff is a bit pricey but if your up to spending the money, I would DEFFINITLEY recommend it. The quality on a scale of 1-10 would be 11.

but like I said both of these speakers are very good quality speakers, and I really enjoy them.

If I want my music to play throughout 4 speakers should i buy a multiple stereo speaker system or...?

Flatbushbr

If I want my music to play throughout 4 speakers should i buy a multiple stereo speaker system or surround sound speakers? Im thinking surround sound speakers will play most music on only 2 speakers but if i buy a stereo system with 4 speakers, the music will play throughout all speakers - is that true?

Answer
most quality stereo receivers will play 2 sets of speakers but a quality AV receiver may have more options and probably will not cost that much more than a quality stereo receiver, some of the better ones have discreet amps so that would be the way to go...also a lot has to do with the quality of the speakers involved.....music as a general rule takes better quality speakers to produce than movies do....

which is the best wireless speakers home theater system?

kunal

There are a couple from sony and samsung. Are there any other options?

Answer
Hard to say which is best wireless. At the risk of stating the obvious, whichever one works. Not all wireless speakers work seamlessly. Some drop the signal, I haven't heard either Sony or Samsung being problematic in this way, but I don't know to tell you which one works better than the other as a wireless operation. I think the core to your question must be answered in this way, because if one sounds better than the other, but it drops signal then that it is never best. Sonos is an option. http://www.sonos.com/shop/

You will have to take the time to read the reviews and listen to the sound quality of what you are considering. I would not take for granted that a wireless speakers system is best. The advantage of wired home theaters system is that wireless has a better sound quality than wireless any day of the week. The beauty of wired is that you don't have to worry about interference due to other wireless signals in and around the home, like a wireless home phone, cell phone, microwave, wireless networks in a nearby apartment or home and so forth.

I would Samsung is the better brand of the two for what you are looking to do. I hope this helps.

Best.

Multi Room Audio System - WHAT RECEIVER?

Bill

I am building a new home and paid for the option to have multi-room audio system installed since my builder wouldn't allow me to do any pre-wiring myself. With that being said, I am looking to explain the system/speakers that are installed in the house already, and then try to figure out what receiver I need to use to power the system based on my needs....

THE SYSTEM already installed in the house: 5-room audio system, all terminating into the same location in the family room where the receiver will go. Each of the five rooms consists of an independent volume control that controls 2 in-ceiling speakers. Note - the family room where the wires are terminated (and note I may be mis-using "terminated" here) simply takes all the wires down to a simple audio plug in. By that I mean there isn't a bundle of speaker wires running to the family room, it is rather a simple plug in that will go to/from the receiver that I purchase to power the system. (may be red/white wires, I'm not sure as we haven't moved in yet)

MY NEED is to figure out what type of receiver/amp I will need to purchase - including specs for channels, power, etc. I should say that I don't need this system to be as powerful as a rock concert, but I do want good sound quality and definitely want to have enough power to be safe and not have to worry about my receiver burning up. I do NOT care about multiple zones though, I will actually plan on all speakers playing from the same source at all times. Another important note is that this will be pretty much for music only - not movies and theater style audio. Also a side note that may be worth me mentioning is that one of the 5 rooms in the existing system is outdoors so I wouldn't mind those having a little more power so they have the ability to have sound reach into the yard.

Could I please get some tips and advice on what type of receiver/amp I need to purchase to safely powe this system? I don't want to spend a fortune on a receiver and amp if I don't have to so please let me know. I consider myself to be very well educated on most electronics but AV receivers (especially for multi room audio) is just something I'm not too familiar with and it seems quite complicated. Any and all advice is VERY MUCH appreciated - thanks in advance!!!
ADDITIONAL INFO - THIS IS MY SYSTEM:

After thinking about your comments below, I searched for the system that I believe is being installed. I think it is this Lyric 4-room system but I added an additional room:

http://www.crutchfield.com/p_717AU7400W/On-Q-lyriQ-Single-source-4-room-Audio-Kit.html?tp=8458&awkw=43180541305&awat=pla&awnw=g&awcr=15275354545&awdv=c#overview-tab

I'm 95% sure this is it, and it all runs to an "enclosure". It says that the volume control powers the speakers but I'm sure not very much wattage. Assuming this is the system installed, do I need any special receiver, or just a simple one that will allow me to choose my input (cd, ipod, etc.)? Should I consider power ratings and high quality receivers / amps to power this system? Any futher help is MUCH APPRECIATED!

Answer
You don't use a receiver for this, you're looking for a Whole House Audio system. There are a number of options... HTD offers inexpensive systems that use keypads in each room to control the system... http://www.htd.com/Products/Whole-House-Audio There are a number of similar systems in better more expensive brands but in this age of wireless you might rather opt for something like the Sonos system... http://www.sonos.com/system These will give you the option of having individual zones but if you are sure you are not interested in this you could use a single Sonos Zone player driving a multi channel amplifier.

You can't use a receiver to power numerous speakers other than by running it in "All Channel Stereo" mode. It would be better to just get a multi channel amplifier like the HTD... http://www.htd.com/Products/multi-channel-amplifiers/DMA-1240 With this and a single Sonos Zone player you can drive six pairs of speakers. The nice thing about the Sonos is that you control it from a Smart Phone or Pad. With this you would also have the option of adding additional zone players later so you could have different music in different rooms if you wanted to. The system I put in my house has eleven zones and it is nice to be able to put the source you want in the room you want.

As for outdoors, this is not as big an amplifier power issue as a speaker efficiency issue. For this you need bigger more efficient speakers more than you need more amplifier power. Keep in mind the Log scale of human hearing, you need 10 times more power just to seem like the level doubles, more efficient speakers is the better way to have louder outdoors.

Good stereo/hi-fi systems/speakers?

Marcus

I'm using a Teac system CD100 from '87, and while I like the system and the big speakers(fills up the whole house), I'll need a new one soon, preferably one with aux. Any suggestions?

Answer
Take a look at this speaker from the manufacture like JBL, Definitive Technology, Energy, Infinity, Klipsch and Polk Audio. Demo the speakers at your local retail store with your own source of music. Your own ears are the best judge on this. Hope this will help you out.

Hi-fi or Home Theatre System?

Mark

I have to make a decision whether I should get a normal 2 speaker hi-fi or a home theatre system (5.1). I have a normal hi-fi at the moment with 2 speakers. I usually just play CD's, the radio and an iPod off the system. I have been told that I should rather go for a home theatre system and that that is the way to go nowadays. Is that true even if I'm not going to probably be watching movies and that sort of thing straight away - maybe at a later stage? Would the quality of sound be better, functions and will it be a lot louder?

Answer
There are other audio technologies out there that would also benefit from a home theater system. DVD Audio is one of the most popular where the music sounds like the soundtrack on a 7.1 Surround Sound movie.

Now that said, you'd need to purchase and set up additional speakers and a sub-woofer. That could be a big investment also depending on where your tastes lie.

If you aren't going to add the extra speakers, then you are fine with 2-channel stereo. Keep in mind that home theater systems also operate in 2-channel stereo, so if the price is about the same it may benefit you to prepare for the future and just get the home theater receiver.

The functions and volume produced varies based on several attributes. The efficiency of your speakers is one, the amps your amplifier pulls, to a degree the watts per channel output. There is no reason to believe that a Home Theater system would perform 2-channel stereo any better than a Stereo amplifier with the same specifications.

Im just wondering if these are 2 good options, also should I look into buying an amplifier to make the sound even better?

Answer
I bought the non CD version of the JVC. I love it. The power is decent and it works with my Samsung Galaxy S4 for Bluetooth functionality for phone and Pandora. I think it is a steal at that price. A recommendation on speakers really depends on the vehicle itself. If a 6 inch speaker is all you can fit, those Infinities are probably as good as any. That said, don't expect anything close to bass as they are really just midrange speakers. A vehicle as large as yours would benefit from a second pair, preferably 6x9s in the back. If you are going to pay someone to install the system, take copies of the models you are looking at to Best Buy. They install and if they install it, the service should be from your car. If someone else installs you pay every time something has to come in or out of the car. Amplifiers always improve sound, especially if you have some larger speakers or 4 speakers. With just one pair of 6 inch speakers, save your money on the amp.

speaker / amplifier question...?

daonewithn

ok so heres my beef, i have a Technics SA-GX130 amplifier, plugged into 2 SK-101(C) speaker towers, which the max wattage on them is 80W peak. long story short, i blew one of the subs because I guess I turned up the amp a little too loud(thank you dubstep -.-). I'm now looking to replace the subs with something better.

I've been looking on craigslist and most of the subs i find are for cars which have higher wattage handling but lower Impedance. Through some research I've found that the Impedance on the speakers should be relative to the Impedance on the amp. The impedance on the amp is "8ohms each speaker" same as the Impedance on the tower speakers (though it should be lower now that the woofer is burnt and i had to take it out... right?), but the Impedance (dont ask me why i keep capitalizing "Impedance"... it just seems right) on the car subs is 4ohms per sub.

So that being said, does that mean that because the Impedance on the car subs is too low, will this be drawing too much from my amp causing it to overheat? or does the fact that I'm joining the speakers from the tower (tweeter and midrange) with the car woofers mean that this would compensate for the lower Impedance on the subs?? (i've done some reading on this and from what i understand, its ok if the Impedance in the speakers is higher than the amps)

and also, seeing how the peak wattage on the tweeter and midrange is 80w peak, and i plan on turning that sucker up since i'll have beefier woofers, would this burn out the the tweeter and mid??
(btw, the specks on the speakers which are on the back of the tower, are for all three combined I assume)

another possible option that i can think of is that, the amp has 2 sets of speaker outputs, so if i was to connect both subs to one channel, seeing how each sub is 4ohms, the 2 together would be 8ohms (or so is my understanding) would this be ok too? (only downside i can see from this is that i would have bass only one channel which might suck depending on the song)

anyways, those are my quetions, I'm a total speaker noob and I haven't found anything relating to my issue online, thanks alot for your input and thanks especially for reading my 20 page manuscript. PEACE
PS, the woofers that burnt were 10". same size as the ones i plan on putting in, and will be going into the same box unless i find some with their own box, in which case i might just leave the burnt woofers in their own box just for the sake of not having a giant hole and ruining the pressure of the box

Answer
If you're looking on Craigslist I have to assume price is the most important factor in your decision or else you would be shopping at a place like parts express instead.
http://www.parts-express.com/
I have this advice for you. Speakers are not created equal and all have their individual characteristics. When you substitute an original speaker with a replacement that is not of the same type you change the characteristics of the whole unit. So you could end up with a speaker system that sounds better than it did new or one that sounds so bad you wonder why you even bothered to try. Also impedance is highly important so forget all of those 10" car subwoofers that are 4 ohms. If your system is 8 ohms then you need an 8 ohm speaker. Oh and yes a 4 ohm speaker will draw more current from the amp and if the amp wasn't designed for it, could cause it to shut down or burn out.

I also read your part about the amp having 2 sets of speaker outputs. Your assumption is WRONG. If you had 2 sets of 4 ohm speakers and had the amp set to play both outputs then the result would be 2 ohms and not 8. as the A/B switch usually parallels speakers.

when buying a speaker system, do i need a subwoofer?

what is it used for or should i get one?

Answer
Most full-range speakers (not Bose) need to have 3 different drivers to reproduce all the sound. These drivers are called:

- Tweeter
- MidRange
- Woofer

These speakers tend to be tall and take a lot of power even for a 2-speaker system. Try and power 5 full-range speakers and most receivers cannot handle it and most rooms are not big enough to surround you with 5 tower speakers.

They have found that small, monitor-style speakers with a tweeter & mid range drivers and a external self-powered subwoofer is cheaper, easier to setup and can be powered with a modest 75 watt receiver.

So you do want to buy a system with a separate self-powered subwoofer.

I have to disagree with some of the earlier answers posted here. Let me explain:

Bose - Cheats by putting an over-sized tweeter in a plastic cube to take the place of a tweeter - mid range driver. Then they force dealers to never put them on sale to create the illusion that they are a 'premium' brand. The sound from small plastic cubes is impressive, but you will NEVER find a positive review of these speakers. This is because Bose sues anybody who tries to publish a review.

Subwoofer is where things are connected - You run a single RCA cable to the sub from the receiver ... and thats it. Only if you have a un-powered sub do you wire speakers to the subwoofer. But then your receiver had better be good because it is powering the sub and taking away power to the other 5 speakers. A self-powered sub is preferred.

Car speaker system, amp, subwoofer, speakers?

navarady

Okay. I want to outset my car with a really loud set up. I want an extremely loud thumping subwoofer (or two) and speakers that I can turn up loud that wont blow out! I have no knowledge of what an amp is and which/what I need as far as those. Just what would you recommend me getting to create an amazing stereo in my car.
Thanks
PS I have a pioneer avic f900-bt as my stereo
Michael I am not allowed to email you
I need more answers on what to buy and what amps do

Answer
Extremely loud requires lots of power....

If your total system power is 1200 watts RMS or more, you will need to:

1. Upgrade the alternator to a high output alternator
2. Upgrade to a yellow top battery
3. Upgrade the "Big 3" - that is to replace (or add to) the power wire between the battery and alternator, the ground from the battery to the chassis and the ground strap from the engine/tranny to the chassis with at least 2 AWG wire.

Failure to do this will result in the early death of the alternator as it will eventually fail.

Here is a guide that will calculate what size alternator and power wires you need http://www.box.net/shared/uchv4dbk88

You will need Microsoft Excel. If you don't have Excel, use this link http://www.box.net/shared/nkkw1dhk4g

A second battery is never a good idea as it's an added strain on the alternator to charge two batteries AND supply power for the car. The ONLY time a second battery is useful is if the audio system is to be used with the car off.

A capacitor is only good so far as the audio system isn't trying to pull too much from the electrical system. A cap doesn't provide more power, it's designed to 'stiffen' the voltage to the amp, nothing else. If the current isn't there, a cap won't help.
The alternator must have at least 20% more amperage power than the entire vehicle and sound system combined for a cap to be of benefit which is ironically the same requirements for an amp to be efficient.

What is a good 7.1 speaker system with a receiver that is cheap?

Bowling A

I want to get a cheap 7.1 speaker system with a receiver that is good. Any suggestions? Links would be helpful as well as reviews.

Answer
Go to Fry's Electronics and look up the Onkyo HT-S5200 system a 7.1 receiver and 7.1 speaker set up for $500.

What speaker system match with 7.1 Onkyo TX-SR804 receiver?

DONG D

My budget is $2000

Answer
If you're going to install small bookshelf, or satellite type speakers, your receiver will be adequate to power whatever you select. They key will be in selecting what sounds best to you. You should budget the most money for the speakers in your system. I don't know the Onkyo from personal experience, but my brother loves his.

After you find what you like from the expensive, hi-end stores. Go to e-bay and buy the same thing pre-owned. You can buy a lot more this way.

If you don't have a lot of cash, buy fewer speakers. 5 with a sub will sound every bit as good as 7 and you'll be happier if your fronts (L,R,C) are of higher quality. The rear speakers are only for effects and are less important. The fronts are where most sound comes from.

You haven't given much information regarding your preferences or budget. If you are going to use this system to play music as well as movies, you should go to a high-end store with a few of your favorite disks and a movie or 2 with good sound tracks and sound effects. If you don't have some, go to e-bay and search for CDs using the following search words, XRCD, HDCD, SACD, Chesky, Audiophile and check off the box that searches for these words in the titles and descriptions.. Among the items that are presented in response to your search, pick out some of your favorite artists and buy a few high quality recordings. I don't know your tastes, but for these purposes, find some sampler disks that have different styles of music but are specifically for showing off what a sound system can do.

If you're going to listen to music, as well as movies, your front left right speakers are most important, followed by the center. If your budget is limited, consider buying the best fronts you can afford and pick up some cheap speakers for rear sound effects. You can buy better surround speakers when you have money for an upgrade. I can't emphasize too much that the fronts are the most important. God made you with 2 ears, left and right. Most music is produced with an emphasis on L/R presentation.

In fact, the best produced music with good speakers and amplification will give you a 3-d effect with only 2 speakers. When you go to the store, don't let the salesman talk you into buying 5 matched speakers right away, go for the fronts matched, the rears can be almost anything and you can always upgrade. I am partial to planar style speakers. My Martin Logan Ascents, with the system set to 2 speakers and a sub produce an amazingly enveloping sound field. You will need a quality sub to give you those thumps that thrill in movies.

The best ones are made by Velodyne. I would look on -ebay for the best Velodyne you can buy, and get a used one from a highly rated seller.

Tell your salesman you are interested in getting the best "soundstage and stereo-imaging." These are magic words!! The imaging and soundstage describe how the speakers reproduce sound in a 3-D manner. The goal of audiophile sound reproduction is to give you a front row seat at a concert and enable you, with your eyes closed, to be able to imagine where the singers and musicians are placed on the stage. Planar speakers do this better than box speakers, but they require more power.

Going back to your situation, see if you can find a store that sell Magnepan speakers. The little ones (MMG?, I think) with a quality subwoofer will be tought to beat in the modest price range. As for small "box" speakers, give a listen to B&W, Paradigm Reference, PSR.

Smaller speakers are not full range, tending to mids and hi frequency reproduction. That's another reason you'll need a quality sub.

Happy listening.

iPod speaker/docking systems?

Amber

Any suggestions? I have an iPod touch 3rd generation not that it matters considering you get different attachments/a universal docking station... anyways :P I need something that is:

-loud!
-CLEAR/crisp-a system that does not lose clarity with the max volume
-has a good range of pitch i.e. tweeters, mid rangers & decent bass (sub woofers etc.)

I know that's a lot to ask for for under around $200 and I know I'm not going to get a state of the art piece with that but I believe it's possible to get those features with the quality for that price range-thanks!! :)

Answer
You can find quality iPod speakers/docking systems online. Might want to check if iHome, Altec Lansing or Cyber Acoustics fits your preference.

what is the best choice for a dock /speaker system for an ipod touch?

fatsbolger

whenever i play my ipod touch on my ihome it sounds all fuzzy and my bday is coming up and i wanted to know what kind of speaker system i should ask for

Answer
If you've got an iPod touch. Then you need to get he Macally FlexTune dock ( http://www.thepoddepot.com/2008/03/31/macally-flextune-portable-stereo-system-and-charging-station-for-ipod-and-iphone/ ) . It allows you to dock your iPod normally and sideways!! So, you can actually watch your widescreen movie from your iPod touch while it charges on the dock. The sound is also pretty good.

New logictech z623 2.1 speaker system buzzing!?!?

Tyler

I just got the logictech z623 2.1 speaker system and when I hooked it all up and turned it on it started to buzz! I did nothing to them, I just hooked them up and played it. What can I do to try and fix the problem? Thanks in advance.

Answer
Try connecting it to a music player such as a phone or the like. If the buzzing sound continues on a battery operated source, the speakers are defective.

Any suggestions for a receiver/speaker system?

phillyphan

I currently have a cheap (but still decent) sound system, but I want to upgrade to something more with a little more clarity and just overall better sound. I was looking at the Sony DH700, DH800, and STR-DN1000 receivers. Any thoughts on which one is better or is better value? I do not think I have the room right now for a 7.1 setup, but future expansion might be nice.

Also, are there any speakers that are good value or are just crap? Anything less than $750 (combined receiver and speakers) would be nice, but any recommendation would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Here's a system that will vastly outperform anything under $2000:

SVS 5.1 compact surround system with SBS-01 mains and PB10-NSD subwoofer
http://www.svsound.com/products-sys-sbs_black.cfm

Denon AVR-590 receiver
http://www.amazon.com/Denon-AVR590-5-1-Channel-Receiver-Connectivity/dp/B002AKKFQM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1263338025&sr=1-3

SVS makes amazing speakers, and their subwoofers are world-class. It's in a completely different league than mass-market systems. The Denon receiver has a microphone that automatically optimizes the sound for your room and speaker placement.

A lot more money than you mentioned, but you get what you pay for. This is about the least you can spend and still get true audiophile sound.

Stereo speakers to computer speakers?

coryj101

I have two speakers that came from a stereo system that broke. They both have a max handling capacity of 5 watts, an impedence of 4 ohms, and the imput wires are simply positive/negative wires. Is that wattage additive or constant when concerned with building an amp? What type/size of transformer do I need to utilize? And after purchasing the necessary parts (please let me know if I miss any necessary components), specifically where in the circuit do I incorporate the various components? I hope this question isn't too taxing...

Answer
Sounds like a lot of work to get some old speakers to run with a computer. If the speakers are rated at 5watts, this would be their RMS value or constant wattage they can see for long periods of time. Without getting into too much detail with regards to sensitivity, 1w1m specs, etc. If the speakers are rated at 5watts I don't think they would be worth the effort just to plug them into your computer. Most computer speakers today run on a 25 -50 watt amplifier and costing around $50-100 and can produce some very high end sounds at your computer.

How can I hook up my speaker system with my computer? PLEASE help 10 pts best anwser.?

Raddin

Hello and thank you for answering my question. I have a speaker system but no connections to my computer or anything, just wires, so is there any way that I could connect it to another device such as an Mp3 or laptop.
Thanks

Answer
only way this will work is if you have a stereo or a power source for the speakers. The computer will not provide enuf power to make them loud or work at all. You get a decent pair of headphones. Like ten dollar pair not even. The headphone wires should be at least twice as thick as ipod ear bud wires. You cut the headphone wires as close to the headphones as possible. Strip them about an inch. There mite two sets of wires in one rubber casing. Separate them and leave the inner cased wire alone (if there is one). Now get audio jacks(red and white kind). How ever long you need to reach your stero from your computer. If you have those types of jacks on it. Then plug in the headphone jack to your comp turn stero on put wires together. If you need more help check out a tec sit they sometimes help. If you have direct wire input to the stereo just go to radio shack and get a set of speaker wires. Not that much money will be spent. Hope I could help.

Speaker system??????????????????

I am looking to create a killer sound system for my computer setup, but the problem is I have no clue what I should use⦠I don't want to spend over $200 but I rather spend just $150. I was thinking of getting two sony SS-B1000, but what amp should i get to power them? Is there any other speakers you would recommend to me? I am looking at only spending like $50 on the amp, but If i have to spend more what everâ¦

Answer
That's a pretty small budget for a "killer sound system". Especially if you are going to try to piece it together yourself. Component systems are typically better, but are more expensive.

As one person has pointed out, the Klipsch pro-media system is really nice. I had a set of them years ago before I built my component system.

I would also highly recommend keeping you eyes open for some nice used speakers on craigslist or ebay. Sony doesn't really make very good speakers. About a year ago I bought a pair of Mirage M290is speakers for about $110 after shipping. As for sound quality, they will blow away anything Sony has ever built.

I would recommend the Audioengine 2. They're powered speakers so do not need an amp, they're small but sound BIG, and they're available in white for Mac people...

I've had a pair for a year or so for use in my office when I'm working from home, and I still get surprised at how good they sound for the size and cost ($200)

Is this system any good for gaming; Onkyo SKS-HT870 Home Theater Speaker System?

Yussi

If not what would you suggest, nothing to expensive.

Answer
My Onkyo is part of that line from about the same time (past year). I did a lot of research on systems and found this line, for what it is (all in one receiver) is very good for the money. I've owned it for about a year and love it. Within each source mode it will give you choices for fine tuning the sound-I've found that sometimes what might be suggested might not be to my liking but it gives you the choice to try different settings. You can even customize them if you'd like but I'm lazy and the presets are more than enough for me. It's complex enough there are tons of toys and options but it's easy enough that you can figure a lot out by trial/error and only flip through the manual for reference or out of boredom. Being a surround system you'll get better results if the room is set up to meet it's demands but heck, I've had it temporarily in some really odd configurations and it still blows me away. Can't wait to move into my new home soon to give it the proper set up. These sets offer a lot for the money. The sound for gaming will freak you out if you're new to 5.1.

It has a subwoofer (that you can turn on and off). On the downside, I do not believe that it pushes the full 540 watts RMS it claims, but it is VERY loud.

Answer
Hifonics or Rockford speakers. Around letssay 300. Letsay 1000 watt system so you gonna need Rockford r1000 amp and 2 alpine type r 12"s that comes to 500
And you got 300 to spend on nice stereo like pioneer or kenwood Which is around under 200. You should have all this under 1000 I got half of everything I listed >:)

best 3.1 system for under $300?

Q. Im looking for the whole package. speakers and receiver.

Answer
Just an idea, you could get an ipod/mp3 player plug it into self powered speakers like Audioengine A2 speakers. One speaker plugs into the wall socket, the other extension is a USB port, an ipod with a docking station will have a USB port. This is a very plain and elegant solution for the money.

http://www.ipoddockingstation.us/buy-1-13996491-B004UR485M-All-1-Onkyo_DS_A4_Remote_Interactive_Dock_for_iPodiPhone_Black.html

Assuming you already have an ipod or mp3 player a refurbished docking station and Audioengine a2 speakers should leave you around $30 change. Just a thought.

Best.

are 4 way speakers better than 3 way or 2 way speakers?

.

Is there a such as a 1 way speaker?

Answer
More doesn't always mean better. It's just methods used by engineers to produce sound. For example a well designed 2-way sounds better than a crappy 4-way.

A well designed 3-way and up can go louder until distortion, can offer installation flexibility, etc. But they are complex, expensive and harder to do correctly. Most 3-4way car speakers are low quality shit but they still make 'em 'cuz people are suckered to thinking more is better.

A "1 way" speaker system is a full-range single driver speaker. It's just one driver making most of the sound from the lows to the highs. Drivers that can do this are referred to as extended range driver, wide range driver, or a full-range single driver, etc.

It's hard to make a single driver speaker that sounds good and plays loud. It's easier to split the audio frequencies to dedicated drivers so the each driver don't work as hard. ex: Subs play bass, woofers play midbass to midrange, tweeters play the highs

driver - is a single speaker/transducer. ex: a tweeter, woofer, subwoofer, etc.. In other words just the single speaker by itself.

I want to have a speaker system installed in my house and need advice..?

vixalle21

My house had an intercom system in each room, and outside on the patio, so I already have wiring in place. What I want to do it replace each intercom with a speaker so that when i turn on my stereo, i could hear the music through the whole house. Does anyone know how much this would cost? I was also wondering if i could connect the speaker system to my computer so that i could hear the songs i have saved on my computer. Is this possible? Does anyone have this and if so, can you tell me where you went to buy and how you like it? thanks

Answer
You can certainly do it.
Cost will depend on what quality of speaker you choose to replace your intercom.
You should expect to pay about $70 per speaker and you will probably have to replace the amplifier that is now powering the intercoms. That can cost about $500, plus labor.
You should contact a local installer of PA (Public Address) or Pro Audio equipment.
You can also go to manufacturers website for a receommendation.
i.e. Electro-Voice and Atlas are companies that make this type of speaker.
You can search their website for a dealer in your zip code to get someone in your area.

I have In wall speakers all over my house but no sound system. How can I find the correct sound system?

Nikki

The people who lived in this house before us took the sound system but there are still wires and speakers. Does anybody know how I can figure out how to get them to work?? :/

Answer
It depends on exactly what you have. Personally I like my HTD system. http://www.htd.com/Products/advanced;jsessionid=0a010b441f43c0b70e4886a7474a9556a6ea7dea562d.e3eSbNyQc3mLe34Pa38Ta38Nb350

You will need to sort out your wires etc if they are not labeled. If all the wires come together in a single location like a closet then you will need two people to sort the speaker wires. Use a AA batt to momentarily touch each speaker wire while someone goes around the house determining which speaker makes the thump sound. If you can get at to see the speaker rotate the batt until the cone moves forward when you touch the wires to the batt and then note the +/- on the batt. This tells you which speaker wire is plus and which is minus. Get them all labeled by room and left/right.

You also need control. Do you have keypads on the walls in each room or blank plates where keypads may have been? For the HTD system you will need a keypad in each room connected by a Cat-5 wire back to the central location. If you don't have that then something like the Sonos will be a better option. The Sonos is completely wireless. You will need a Sonos "bridge" connected to your PC and internet if you want access to music from those sources. It will then communicate wirelessly to multiple players all located at your central speaker wire location. You would just give each room a Sonos receiver. Their receivers are available with or without amplification so you could either go with the amplified ones or use the unamplified ones along with something like the HTD multi channel amplifiers. The Sonos will be controlled either by your PC, your i-phone, or a hand held controller from Sonos. With it you don't need the cat-5 wires to keypads in the rooms.

Coby CS-MP77 75-Watt High Performance MP3 Speaker System?

Sefket

I want to know if the Coby CS-MP77 75-Watt High Performance MP3 Speaker System sounds like a movie theater sound system. Basically, I want to know if it feels like you're at the movies watching a movie.

Answer
Well, personally I don't care for the sound systems in most theaters. But these things are mislabeled. They certainly are not high performance. So the answer is: No. Even the sound system in the worst theater will outperform these things.

iPhone fell in Bathtub. Popups about accessories keep coming up, will not shut off.?

Lucas T

My iPhone 3G fell in the bathtub, 3 days ago. After putting it in rice for a couple of day, it started to work again. With a few minor faults.
1) Keeps pooping up with "This accessory is not compatable"
2) Keeps wanting me to turn to "Airplane Mode" because of the accessories.
3) Will not shut off, Just keeps restarting.
4) No longer plays iPod music in external speakers.

Should I reset my iPhone, to get rid of these or what?
It seems as if it could be with the operating system.

Help please

Answer
Yeah, resetting the iPhone would be a good start.
If it does not help call Apple customer service, if you're still under warranty they should be able to help you out. If you're out of warranty, ask nicely for a possible favor, maybe a discount on a new iPhone.
Asking always works for me. I really love my iPhone!

How to set up an existing, in place, home speaker system?

MquesAtioN

My house has speakers all around the inside of the house and in my patio. The speakers are already in the wall. Any suggestions on how to setup the speakers and hook them all up to a cpu or ipod for media? The installed speakers are more than a decade old. Any other sites or companies that can help me out? Advice? This is not part of a home theatre.

Answer
If its just speakers then any system will work but if it also has volume pods and other controls you may have to stick with the brand that was originally installed... HTD has some really good whole house audio systems at very reasonable prices, I'm not sure they are into i pods or computers yet so maybe Sonus may be better more up to date but also more expensive....

Home Speaker System?

jared_lee_

Does anybody know how much it costs to put in a whole-house in-ceiling or in-wall speaker system. The house we are building has 4 bedrooms which I would like speakers in all. Also I would like them in the basement, kitchen, living, 2 bathrooms, and 4 outside speakers.

Answer
Well first off it depends on how many speaker per room. Let's estimate 2 in each bedroom, 4 outside, 1 per bathroom, living room, kitchen 4 each, and 1 home theater system.
A good quality in home speaker in ceiling about 350 per pair, a good in wall being about the same.
2 Receivers and 1 multiroom switch approximately $2500. A whole house system controller (Fancy Remote that controls every room with a button) 1000 for the system and 1000 per master remote and 500 for a secondary remote.
Now with all that Speaker Wire run to every room in wall grade to the receivers. 3000. (Little extra for guesstimate)
and volume knobs per room 10 at 50 each 500.
And and Installer who can do it all for you 2500 to 4500.

About 25,000 to 40,000 depending on the equipment.

Can you help me hook my speaker system up to my new LG HDTV.?

Pat

Originally had a 22 inch LG lcd hdtv and had the logitech x-240 speaker system hooked up to it and it worked fine. I just bought the LG 37lg30 hdtv. It is a 37 inch lcd hdtv. My logitech speakers won't work with them. Before, i just plugged the speakers into the headphone jack and when i do this with the new tv they won't project any sound.

Answer
First step: make sure the headphone jack on the new TV actually works. Plug in some headphones and see if you get some sound. Second step: make sure your speakers still work. Plug them into something else and check them. That should narrow it down.

Which Is Better, an HDTV or a Speaker System or a Flip SlideHD.?

Axel

My birthday is in 2 months I'm thinking of getting an Flip Slide HD But at the same time I want an HDTV, but then I could plug in my iTouch to the speaker system and party.

Answer
No one can answer that for you. You have to decide on your preference/priority.

That said, an HDTV stands alone (for watching TV, or only requires a DVD player to allow movie watching. A Flip SlideHD (which by the way was "found wanting" by Gizmodo) stands alone as a way to record and show video but only has a small screen to watch on, so without a large display (e.g. HDTV) you don't get much. As to speakers, they won't do anything without an amplifier or receiver to power them. I suggest you consider what item would give you most "bang for the buck" if you don't have the others. Off hand, the HDTV would be my choice ... but it's your choice that matters.

Answer
My choice would be the Onkyo TX-SR504 and a pair of BIC Acoustech HT-75 floorstanding loudspeakers. I think your dad will appreciate the system's great sound, good looks, and great quality -perhaps the best value under $500.

What is the best speaker system for under 700 USD, 500 pounds. Loud loud sub and loud loud clear speakers?

Mak

I really wanna know what kinda of sound system I could buy that would blow the roof off and yet still sound really good for under 500 British pounds (700 USD). I wanna connect it to my computer. I have heard of the Klipsch promedia 5.1 and Logitech z 5500 but wondering if i could buy something for non-computer use that can still be connected to the computer or buy a sub and speakers separately to make an awesome kit. I only have a small room

Answer
Home theater in a box systems are OK, but the build overall quality isn't that great.

Your best bet, would be to do some research, shop around, and build a theater system yourself. You will bet much better overall quality and you have the freedom of choice as far as parts go.

What you will need is:
-- 5.1 Receiver with your preference of audio connections (Optical, RCA, HMDI).
-- Front (left and right) channel speakers.
-- Center channel speaker.
-- Rear channel speakers.
-- Sub-woofer(s).
-- Cables/hook-ups.

It sounds like a daunting task, but it isn't as hard as it looks. It's a little time-consuming though. In the end, you will be much happier with the results.

Look at the reviews online for the products. They will really help you and inform you of problems with the products. Some stores even have home theater components on display to allow you to hear them.

I'm not too familiar with retailers and sites that will deliver to the UK, so I can't really help you on that part.

Good luck!
