Any ideas on a Speaker System for my 18th Party?

Georgie :-

Something relatively low in price but with good sound quality at high volume that will be compatible with my ipod.

Alternatively, how could I plug my ipod into my Dad's Hi-Fi?
thanks chicagoinstaller that's really useful...but what is the cable called that I would have to buy to connect the ipod to my Dad's Hi-Fi?
ah waaait that's what "3.5mm stereo to RCA analog adapter" means...

Sorry! :-S

Answer
You would need an Ipod dock to just run speakers off you ipod, but if you had a set of amplified speakers you could also run this too from the ipod headphone jack and be ok.

Choices

EXPENSIVE but nice

In order to connect you Ipod into your father's stereo you would need a cable like this below

Make sure you pay attention to the two ribs or stripes on the smaller connector (which means its a stereo connector) some come with less and some have more, but in this case you need a
"3.5mm stereo to RCA analog adapter."
This can plug into any input on the stereo except the phono or turntable input. Most should even have an input on the face of the unit for easy quick connections, if not just get the cable into the back input and leave it there when not using the ipod.

What is the best speaker system for a party (college atmosphere)?

Looking for a speaker system to put in our party room in our house. Need something that is loud and sounds good but without going crazy on the price. Anyone got any ideas on what to look for?

Answer
One of the best "party speakers" out there is the Cerwin-Vega ("AT" or "D" Series or newest "VE" Series) loudspeaker system in either a 12" three-way or the huge 15" three-way models. They don't need a lot of power to get very loud, and they put out chest pounding bass too! You can find these all over the web, and there are usually quite a few on eBay -new and used.

Another good choice is either the DCM KX-12 or KX-212 model.

The above choices can handle the largest rooms. However, if you want to stay away from large, heavy speakers, and you don't have a large room (e.g. under 400 sq. ft.), then a very reasonably priced floor speaker from MTX Audio is a good choice: the Monitor 600i.

Bottom line, as a rule of thumb when you're looking for "party speakers", look for specs that offer a high sensitivity (usually 90dB or higher), good, deep bass (30Hz or lower), and can handle at least 100 watts. Other than that, find the pair that looks the best to you. If you purchase locally, I recommend auditioning them first to see if the sound is good to you or not.

Keep in mind, however, "party speakers" are usually not designed for critical listening (a term often used by audiophiles), but rather designed for being loud, and likewise, "high-end" or "audiophile" speakers or not ideal for use as a party speaker usually because they require pinpoint positioning and typically have a lower sensitivity.
