I'm using a Teac system CD100 from '87, and while I like the system and the big speakers(fills up the whole house), I'll need a new one soon, preferably one with aux. Any suggestions?

Take a look at this speaker from the manufacture like JBL, Definitive Technology, Energy, Infinity, Klipsch and Polk Audio. Demo the speakers at your local retail store with your own source of music. Your own ears are the best judge on this. Hope this will help you out.

Hi-fi or Home Theatre System?

I have to make a decision whether I should get a normal 2 speaker hi-fi or a home theatre system (5.1). I have a normal hi-fi at the moment with 2 speakers. I usually just play CD's, the radio and an iPod off the system. I have been told that I should rather go for a home theatre system and that that is the way to go nowadays. Is that true even if I'm not going to probably be watching movies and that sort of thing straight away - maybe at a later stage? Would the quality of sound be better, functions and will it be a lot louder?

There are other audio technologies out there that would also benefit from a home theater system. DVD Audio is one of the most popular where the music sounds like the soundtrack on a 7.1 Surround Sound movie.
Now that said, you'd need to purchase and set up additional speakers and a sub-woofer. That could be a big investment also depending on where your tastes lie.
If you aren't going to add the extra speakers, then you are fine with 2-channel stereo. Keep in mind that home theater systems also operate in 2-channel stereo, so if the price is about the same it may benefit you to prepare for the future and just get the home theater receiver.
The functions and volume produced varies based on several attributes. The efficiency of your speakers is one, the amps your amplifier pulls, to a degree the watts per channel output. There is no reason to believe that a Home Theater system would perform 2-channel stereo any better than a Stereo amplifier with the same specifications.
