What all do I need to build a audio system for vinyl?

Dylan

I'm thinking of starting a new long term project of building a "vinyl" audio system from scratch. I plan to build a turntable, a tube amp, and speaker enclosures. What I'm wondering is what all will I need besides those three things? Or can I just plug the record player into the tube amp and then directly from tube amp to speakers? Is a preamp required?

I've done a bit of research and have found lots of info for building the turntable from parts of old turntables. None of which will have a built in preamp. Pretty much direct wiring from the tone arm cartridge out to RCA. I've also found a good bit of info on tube amp kits like the S-5 that puts out 8w per channel at 8 ohms but it requires .7 volts input for full output. Lastly I plan to build a pair of speaker enclosures but I'm unsure if they need to be powered beyond the tube amp.

So to recap....

1. Do I need a preamp, and does it need to be a particular kind to keep the "tube" sound?
2. Do the speakers need to be powered beyond the tube amp?
3. Am I missing a component?

Answer
I applaud the idea of wanting to build your own audio system as I did in my teens from kits and even that was challenging. Now if your looking to build kits, absolutely I would encourage it, but to build a complete system from scratch, you better have a very high level of electronic engineering behind you otherwise not only is it going to be a waste of money your working with extremely high voltages which are lethal. Unless you really know audio design don't do it.

That kinda confirms it for me if you don't know what you need in a audio system. the vital pieces in the system are missing, and that is a preamplifier and phono-preamplifier.

Just by your question I can tell you really don't have a clue about designing a good music system, so if your really wanting to build a system, learn about it in books first.

Speaker and electronic design is very complex and takes years of engineering background to even think about designing equipment.

are these amplifier, speakers and lp player compatible?

lp player: Denon DP-29F
amplifier: Pioneer A-109
speakers: Canton GLE 402
and if so, will it be good quality?

Answer
The amp and speakers look like a nice little system. That turntable is basically a toy though and the Canton speakers would certainly reveal that.

Honestly, unless you have at least a few hundred dollars to spend on vinyl playback, just stick with a CD player and it will sound much better. Vinyl is not worth doing unless you do it right. A table like that won't even play at the right speed for long. You'll have audible wow and flutter. You'll also have tracking distortion and "thick", grainy sound with a limited frequency range and limited transparency due to the cheap cartridge and stylus.
