I have a Bose 321 GSX and want something that is better sound quality wise. I only use the 321 system as speakers because i have a ps3 as a DVD player.

Which one has better sound quality? And also is Bose 901 series II too old?

Answer
Ok...
So you are looking for a "better sound quality wise" speaker system.
You are not alone.
There are many many Bose owners [I'm also one] that tends to look for better: after falling in love with Bose marketing and what their products aspire to be.
Bose Does do a decent job with certain applications - but what they are WEAK with is cross platforming. - meaning in your case, the usage of your 3-2-1 system for more serious listaning: like your favorite FLAC-lossless or CD music or even Vinyl... and you'll yeild a unsatisfied listener.

Now we all ask: how is this possible?? - Bose is GREAT, according to their ADS!! and I spent sooo much $$ - surely I get what I paid for !!! Sure, Right.
Then why does my music sound like ____?
Looking for a system. - why go with Bose again??
There are so many other choices.
They let you down once... they'll let you down again.
Buy their Bose radio -Wave system for $400-500 or their 901 [$1500+ brand new or $500 used] --- and now what??
Still sounds bad.
OK - Bose says you need their special PROPRIETARY equalizer unit. OK - go and find one for your series ... another piece of equipment from them... there goes another few hundred.
Then What>>
?
Now you got the famous Bose 901. Look under the speaker grills... you'll find this:

The above link is a series III.
Seriously, does this look like a $1500/pair speaker to you??
-Untreated, Paper drivers.
-Nine 4" drivers with FOAM surround
-8 of them is suppose to face the wall and 1 of them faces you. Then Bose calls this "Direct and Reflecting" Right.
-Then the Equalizer that must be used... or else these speakers sound like $20 computer speakers... why?? - Because there are NO tweeters. The 4" Paper drivers are forced by the EQ to do the HIGHS, MIDS, LOWS at the same time.

Bose thinks: - ok - One of these 4" paper/foam drivers do an insufficient job of all the frequencies... so lets put lots of these piss poor drivers in there... then EQ and force them to do it!!! and then market them as Audiophile grade speakers with RESEARCH AND HIGH PRICE... AND THE PEOPLE WILL BUY IT! --- well they were right about one thing. People bought it... back then that is. Now, everyone is buying their Accoustimass/LIfestyle/321 systems which has now 2" untreated, paper, foam drivers! --- cool!yahoo!

Bottom LINE>
Skip Bose.
Sell the 321 system on Ebay or craigslist... or kijiji
...
recoup some money.
Get a system that is good for everything. A good system should be good for Music[of all genres], Movies, Games. --- If a system has FLAT response, it will be GREAT at everything... NO REASON why it won't be.

Buy a dedicated receiver from Pioneer, ONkyo, Yamaha - 5.1 or 7.1 --- any of the new ones have HDMI OR OPTICAL INPUT - WHICH THE PS3 HAS BOTH!
Then get some decent speakers WITH TWEETERS
from
Klipsch - Reference series
Audioengine USA - model: AP4
Paradigm
B&W
Swan Hivi
Svsurround
Pinnacle
KEF
Polk
omg - the list goes on..
Get anything other than Bose... Sony is even better than bose.

Hope this helps!
Good Luck, email me if you have any other ?'s!

Answer
BOSE makes great gear, there's no arguing that. But, in this case I'd have to recommend Dr. Bose old friend, Klipsch. If you're not familiar with Klipsch Audio Technologies, you have no idea what you've been missing.
Really BOSE is in the lower to mid quality range of the high end audio equipment. They're a huge improvement over the commercial Sony, JVC, Pioneer, etc. . . but there is actually even better available (with exception to the BOSE model 901, for those are the work of Gods). If I remember correctly, Dr. Klipsch was instrumental (no pun intended) in the creation, design, and development of the original BOSE 901s.
Although I have no music ability what so ever to speak of, I do know good music, and more importantly I have a better then most idea of what it takes to maintain sound quality/clarity even at door slamming, children crying, angry neighbors, local noise ordnance violating, pissed off girlfriend, sleeping on the couch dB levels.
With that in mind, I can only recommend the Klipsch ProMedia Ultra 5.1 system. Here's a link if you're interested:

Of course, I feel I should warn you, most people loose interest when they see the sticker price.
But if you're into audio, I promise you, you will not be disappointed.
