I just connected, with great effect, a 2.1 Logitech Z-2300 speaker system to my TV. However I would like to maximize the sound for music. Would an equalizer be appropriate? If yes, what should be the specifications? Price range: $50-$70.

Answer
Any equalizer will work. I don't know of any that inexpensive. Furthermore, I wouldn't use one. Unless you are a professional installer who is testing the frequency response after room dynamics you do best not to. All the equalizer will do for you will be to degrade signal quality and make the frequency response less flat (flat is best). Equalizers were a fad among stereo users (they corrupt surround sound) back in the 80's that has gradually died out except among very high end applications that adjust a system for room dynamics.

What are good 2.1 computer speakers for a dorm room?

I am looking for a 2.1 computer speaker system that has good-high-excellent quality for a dorm room.?
I want 2.1 computer speakers from good to excellent quality. I dont want floor shaking bass, but I want the bass to fill the room. I also want the speaker sound quality to be At least good quality- excellent.
To: mark_hensley@sbcglobal.net- ok so excellent might be a little far fetched. My price range is $300

Answer
Misha,

What is your budget? Excellent is relative to a price point. I have this set up, it is one of several different set ups this one works well. Purchase the Kicker ik501 for $169, then purchase a digital audio converter (DAC) like Audioengine's D1 for $169. The Kicker has five speakers and a passive radiator that works like a sub. It also has a built in amp delivering an additional 22 watts, all in one devices. It is mobile in a dorm room and fits. The DAC will clarify or filter the music even better after 50 hours of burn in. If you are a music lover this set up will fill the room, its crystal clear, its well within your budget and you don't have to worry about it being broken or destroyed because someone wasn't watching what they were doing. In this case you do not have to get the DAC, the DAC moves you from good to very good just at the tipping point of best for a reasonable price. What you will find is that the ik501 is a very loud and clear unit, very few can out gun this ipod docking station. Which leads me to my second point. You can download Pandora for free on your ipod or phone, place it in the dock and you have radio from around the world at no cost. The Audioengine can be plugged into your usb port and play music off of your computer into the ipod docking station, or, you can plug it into a wall then use a router get a toslink optical cable plug it into the back of the ik501 (aux) and your music from your computer will stream to wherever you set you Kicker. And of course you can play music directly off of your ipod or phone. For $169.00 USD you have five different options in a dorm room to hear music. You can stream from your computer, you can down load Pandora, you can play music directly from your ipod, or your phone directly in the docking station and you can plug it into your flat screen providing excellent audio. If you were my daughter and asked me this exact thing, wanting me to buy it this is what she would be getting and my daughter deserves the best of what I can afford as long as she takes care of it. Hopefully I am communicating to you how strongly I believe this will benefit your dorm room and is a good spend for your money. I encourage you to do so.

I wish you a wonderful college experience. Enjoy and work hard, we need you.

Best.
