I'm on a limited budget, but would like to get a nice home audio system for my family room. I need to have the surround speakers in the ceiling. Should I buy a complete system or maybe piece on together? Thanks!

Answer
Hi. you can buy a complete system which is a home theater in a box, but you would not get the flexibility and sound quality of a system put together with some of the best components from different manufacturers.Ok,so we know your budget. If you could let me know if you want 5 speakers and a subwoofer (5.1) or 7 speakers and a subwoofer(7.1) ?Any particular brand of Receiver ? What Source are you using or going to buy ? (DVD/CD Player,Satellite,Tuner,Turntable)
Loudspeakers all vary in their sound quality. Some are bright sounding , others emphasise the bass frequencies while some have a fairly neutral sound meaning the do not favour any part of the frequency range. These tend to be more expensive than the others but are easier to live with .They reproduce all kinds of music equally well.

Other people on Answers will tell you to spend the most money on speakers and to get them first but that is not the way to go if you want the best sound for your budget.

The Source is the most important part because this is where the signal,( which has been retrieved from the software) is converted into an electrical equivalent and sent to the Pre-Amplifier.(or the Pre-Amp section of a Receiver) to be amplified enough to send to the Power Amplifiers (or the Power-Amp section of a Receiver) The Power Amps amplify the signal enough to be sent to the Loudspeakers.
This is how the signal travells through all of the components and only in this direction. The point is the signal can never be improved within the chain once it has started. It can only be maintained or degraded.Audio and Video reproduction is a damage control job.If we don't get quality information from the Source.....the Pre-Amp,Power Amps, and the Speakers cannot improve the signal. What is generated from the Source component will be reproduced ,but not improved in the chain. Therefore the goal is to change the signal as little as possible.

HERE ARE SOME VERY GOOD RECEIVERS WITH HDMI.

How do I set up a home audio system?

Stephen

Hi, I am new to home audio. I have a few decent sized speakers, an amp, and some crappy old receivers. I would like to make a decent system out of what I have, possibly purchasing a new receiver. I also have a 1000w car amp and two 12" subs. I just need some advice on how to set everything up and how to match the speakers to the amp. I know you need to take resistance and power into account, but I'm not exactly sure how.

Answer
I agree with the comments around the use of car audio for home audio applications, it won't work like you think adding up to a colossal waste of time and money. Can it be done? Most certainly, but it will not be anything to write home about. Best advice I can give you is to take a look at what you are trying to accomplish at look up ehow.com and about.com both will give you really good guidance and workable step by step solutions.

Best
