are the extra speakers in a 5.1, 7.1 configuration meant for dvd/bluray only?

mister esc

other than watching bluray/dvd, why do i need the extra speakers above the 2 fronts?

how about the subwoofer, how do i set up 2.1 for tv, pc, and radio?

Answer
No. Some TV broadcasts are in Dolby surround, so 5.1/7.1 is not exclusively for DVD or Blu-ray.

In general 5.1 surround is fine for smaller rooms (little benefit to 7.1). DVDs are almost all 5.1 sound (or less). Blu-ray are increasingly featuring 7.1 sound, but many are less (and 7.1 generally requires the ability to decode advanced audio formats not supported on budget audio equipment).

7.1 sound requires an HDMI connection throughout.

The ".1" in "5.1" or "2.1" refers to a subwoofer (7.2 means two subs). In most systems a (powered) sub is connected directly to the sub output (sometimes labelled LFE) via a coaxial RCA cable.

On computer systems the sub is usually connected via one half of the mini-stereo plug to an output jack on the computer.

Re 2.1 I don't know what type of speakers you mean. Some are designed to be a stereo connection to an amplifier, with the bass portion of the sound split off and fed to the sub. On computers (as mentioned) there is often a separate connection to plug in.

combining speaker on PC audio system?

is it possible (and how to do it) for me to combine two speaker into a single system?
basically, i have two stereo speaker..
and im planning to use it on both audio jack..
is there any way on how can i make it into a quadraphonic system from a separate audio jack?
maybe by using a software or anything..

the one that i currently using right now at the back panel (analog) is:
http://www.g-shark.com.my/prod_detail.asp?id=2452&category=-%3E163-%3E176-%3E

and i hav this old speaker of mine, that i plan to use for the front panel (digital):

the sound card im using right now is the motherboard default (ASUS P8Z77-V LK)..

i have checked the Realtek HD Audio Manager speaker configuration, and the available setting option is up to 1.7 speaker system..
so, i guess i don't hav problem with the hardware..
but the problem is when i insert another speaker at the front audio jack, the speaker from the back panel will be muted..
because the front panel is normally (or maybe specifically made) for headphones usage..

Answer
You have a nice integrated sound card there, ready for 7.1 action. Multimedia speaker systems mostly come configured, so you'll have to decide which way to go for this. The output of your sound card is "line level". This analog audio signal is compatible with all/any "active" speakers (built in amplifier like multimedia speakers) and av receivers (home stereo amplifiers). Standard 3.5mm stereo phone plug (aka mini jack) cables will connect you to multimedia speaker sets (each jack carries two channels), while 3.5mm stereo phone plug to RCA cables will connect to common home stereo amplifiers. One 3.5mm cable and a pair of multimedia speakers is all you need for quadraphonic sound. connect these to the black jack on your integrated sound card, and adjust sound properties appropriately. The black jack is for surround left and right speakers, the yellow/orange is for center and subwoofer channels if you go 5.1 surround configuration. Good luck, and enjoy!
