Is there any point in buying surround sound 5.1 cds or dvds if you don't have a surround sound system?

I want to purchase the Pink Floyd Immersion box set, which has surround sound dvds. Will I notice a difference compared to the original album while listening through headphones, or am I simply wasting my money?

Answer
Logically, there is no point in buying 5.1 encoded DVD if you dont have true 5.1 setup.
However, if your DVD player is equipped with Dolby digital PRO Logic II decoders, you can still get the virtual surround sound. Check you player's spec for that.
Though it doesnt match the true 5.1 surround sound, it digitally creates some surround sound effect & feels better than just flat stereo or mono sounds. For that you can just connect any low cost 5.1 channel multimedia speakers also, it will do. No need of big setup with AV receiver and amplifiers.

If you are listening through headphones, better not waste money for 5.1 sound dvds. Buy the low cost one.

hey, i have a plain old stereo gaming headphones, they do not have surround sound. I just want to ask, how do i get virtual surround sound for gaming. I am only doing this for gaming, not watching movies. Do i get a 7.1 sound card?

Answer
You will need to buy a card that supports virtual surround. However you don't need to get a 7.1 card a 5.1 dolby surround sound card would do the trick. You can get these for computers, you need to look on the box and it tells you what sound they support.

Once you have that though you will need headphone that also support surround sound up to at least what your sound card is or you wont see the benefit of having a sound card that supports surround sound. Furthermore: if you want to have your computer play surround sound you will also need a speaker system attached to your computer that supports surround sound up to at least what your sound card is
