Thoughts on Logitech Surround Sound z906 Speakers?

Q. I have heard good and bad things about this system. I know it's 500W which is nice but can I play my Ipod through it and if so do I need to order other parts. Also it says it can play multiple channels including my tv. What cables or accesories do I need to play through my samsung hdmi lcd tv.

Answer
The Specifications Page in this group will tell you what sockets the z906 has: http://www.logitech.com/en-gb/speakers-audio/home-pc-speakers/devices/speaker-system-Z906

iPod - buy a basic iPod dock the stereo phono (RCA/cinch) outputs - the red & white plugs.

TV connection - check your TV has an Optical output. If so, buy and Optical cable and hook that up between the TV and the z906. This will give you sound from the TV's own tuner in to the surround kit. You should also get the sound from any device connected to the TV. Check your manual for the specifics relating to your particular model.

home theater in box or logitech z906 ?

Q. Alright, just to make this clear, I don't have a lot of cash right now. So when I say HTiB, I mean something would cost roughly equal to the cost of the logitech z906.

And I want it to connect to my TV. I am looking for good bass. I have no space issues. The TV is in a fairly large 14x19 ft room, (if that is necessary). Any alternative within my budget is appreciated.

Compared to the nearly all other PC speaker sets under $400 the Z906 is a major step up in features, performance and power......but despite all that it's no longer the best choice for multimedia audio in the 21st Century.

The electronics world (including computer makers) has moved on from digital coax and optical and DD and DTS....... The connector of choice now is HDMI, and it has been for at least the last 5 years. Look at your PC graphics cards. Everything $40 and up includes a HDMI now. It's how digital pictures and digital audio is delivered in high definition. This single connector is backwards compatible with DVI-D for your PC monitor(s), and it's how multichannel digital audio is delivered to surround sound kits. Optical and Digital Coax is still important for legacy products, and basic stereo RCA/phonos or 3.5mm jacks will be around for a long time to come. But if you want the best audio quality from games and Blu-rays and the expanding world of digital streaming then you have to look ahead and embrace HDMI as part of your upgrade plans.

The biggest change since the original z905 was launched is that home theatre kits with HDMI and HD Audio decoding for Blu-ray have become a lot more affordable. The technology has trickled down to even the entry level product. It's now possible to buy a good surround kit with an AV receiver, sub and 5 satellite speaker that has all the HD audio bells and whistles for under $300.... and it'll be from reputable brands. The z906 is now comprehensively outclassed in all but sheer bass slam.

Onkyo, Yamaha, Denon, Pioneer, Sony, Harmon Kardon are all very well respected brands in home cinema surround systems. Onkyo has been the most aggressive at launching new technologies at ever more accessible price points. Yamaha is fighting hard though to steal some market share.

The Onkyo HTS3500 home cinema kit ($299) is currently the most affordable HD audio decoding surround sound system you can buy. http://www.onkyousa.com/Products/model.p... It gives you an AV receiver with 4x HDMI ins, 2x Optical and 1x digital coax, plus a bunch of stereo RCA/phonos. You get 5x satellite speakers and a sub. The total power rating is 600W. It handles all the audio decoding duties and gives you full surround sound from any source. The receiver is the latest HDMI spec so it is capable of passing through 3D and has the Audio Return Channel (ARC) feature which is becoming standard on new flat panel TVs.

The step-up price point is $399. The product of choice here is the Yamaha YHT399 http://usa.yamaha.com/products/audio-vis... The paper specification looks very similar to the Onkyo. However, you're buying better speakers (twin speaker satellites and an active subwoofer) so the system will sound better. It also has some nice added features such as pseudo-surround sound via the headphone jack when using ordinary headphones, and there's 4 user customisable scene presets so you can have your favourite modes set up and stored for the main sources you use.

Both the systems above are designed to fill a typical living room with cinema volume sound.

An AV surround system isn't for everyone. If space is at a premium, or the budget is super tight, or you only really need audio from the PC then a PC speaker kit probably makes more sense. But if you're considering spending z906 money then you're already in a different league to most PC users. A good home cinema kit is a wise long term investment that will continue to make increasing sense as your AV needs expand.
