Speaker system for under $250?

I'm trying to purchase a speaker system that's really a bang for your buck. I can only spend about $250 but am a bit of an audiophile. It'll be used about 50/30/20 for music/gaming/movies. I listen to some techno, some rap, a little bit of rock, a little reggae, no jazz, opera, or country. Bass is very important to me. The setup will be used for a room not much bigger than the average dorm room for awhile, but I'd like if they were good enough to hold their own once I moved out of college into a house or a bigger apartment. I'd much prefer floor standing speakers, but I realize they're typically much more expensive, and audio quality comes first, so whatever you think is best. Also, aesthetics are important- I think the Harmon/Kardon Soundsticks II look awesome, but again, audio quality comes first. Durability is somewhat of a concern due to their extended stay in a dorm, but not a huge concern. I don't have a receiver, an amp, or a reputable subwoofer. So, if in my setup you think any of these components is necessary, take that into consideration with my $250 budget in mind. My current setup is a crappy 2.1 out of box sony computer speakers with a half blown bass. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Forgot to add- I don't mind buying used if you think that would provide what I'm looking for. Also, I'd like something with a better sound quality than computer speakers, so unless you all are 100% sold on the quality of Logitech speakers, I'd prefer something along the lines of as123's or paradigm's.
haha I meant av123. sorry.
Anybody else want to chime in?

Answer
Take a look at Fluance speakers or possibly Energy for a little more money...

What is the best component speaker/stereo system for under $200?

Answer
$200 is not very much money to budget on a new stereo system and if you found one for that much it would be plastic made in China crap. Don't despair because there is hope. In all honesty the best stereo system you can get for $200 is a used one. I strongly recommend buying a vintage stereo receiver and speakers. The "golden age" of audio was roughly from 1972-1980. This was when manufacturers were competing against each other in what was known as the "receiver wars". Some of the best looking, quality audio components were built during this era. A vintage 30 watt per channel receiver easily outperforms a new 100 watt receiver made today. Luckily there is a market for these because there are avid collectors of these units. Quality receivers were either built in Japan or U.S.A.. Search craigslist, ebay, thrift stores, and garage sales for receivers made by Pioneer, Sansui, Marantz, Kenwood, Technics(Panasonic) just to name a few. You shouldn't have trouble finding a good one for $100 or less. Same goes for speakers. Only buy speakers made in the U.S.A., Japan, or Europe(usually Germany,Denmark, or the U.K.). Be careful when buying vintage speakers. Pay close attention to the condition of the surrounds on the woofers if they are made of foam. Those generally tend to last only around 10 years or so. It's possible to have foam surrounds replaced though. Rubber surrounds last almost indefinitely. I had a system before that consisted of a Pioneer SX-780 receiver($100) and a pair of Pioneer HPM-60 speakers(REALLY lucky score for $20 at a garage sale). You's have to spend well over $1000 for something new that can compete with the sound quality of that. Keep in mind that you can connect any CD player or MP3 player to the AUX input on these receivers. Good luck with your search.
