I have a 7.1 Speaker system hooked to my computer but it doesn't work as a 7.1 whats wrong?

Goten

I have AMD HD Audio, and SB Audigy. Also The stereo system i'm using is a harman/kardon AVR30.
Am I going to need a special cord? Or do i need to change my settings. Also let me know if i need to add any info.

Answer
Should be your settings, provided you have an appropriate cable from the Computer Output to the AV Receiver input you should have no problems.

1. Check your PC is outputting sound and through the appropriate cable (just open sound mixer)
2. Check the cables are where they need to be (i.e. Optical Cable out - Optical Cable in)
3. Check all the speakers are working with a test tone (through your AV)
4. Check the AV is set to the correct channel (So, PC instead of Game etc.)

If it's still not working, it could be the HDMI cable if you're using one; I THINK the first ones didn't pass through audio, only video. There's nothing wrong with the setup it's usually a really basic setting or a misplaced cable you overlook that causes the issue.

If you have audio, but it's not coming out all the speakers then put you're AV Receiver to a setting that decodes non 7.1 signals into such. If it doesn't have one, then the extra 4 speakers are going to be redundant 90% of the time as you'll have to watch a source that outputs to 7.1 like a Blu-ray .

Building a 7.1 Surround System from two speaker systems?

I recently bought a Logitech 5500Z model (see link please)
http://reviews.logitech.com/7061/224/logitech-z-5500-digital-5-1-speaker-system-reviews/reviews.htm
to compliment my older Philips speakers (please see the link)

I want to get a 7.1 Surround System out of these 7 speakers. The Logitech speakers require three 3.5 mm audio jacks, the Philips speakers require one 3.5 mm audio jack.
will a sound card like this support all 7 speakers/four 3.5 mm jacks ?

do not be rude ! how dare you call my question dumb ?
who the hell do you think you are ?
My motherboard sound system is broken, and i do not want to waste $60 to buy something that may not work. I needed more feedback before i feel ready to spend that much money. Nobody forces your to respond to questions, it is much better to shut your mouth than to insult others.

Unless you plan to do some serious professional audio/music recording and editing, a sound card is a waste of money, most modern motherboards have excellent 7.1 integrated sound.

For 7.1 you need a total of 8 speakers:
2 front speakers
1 center speaker
1 subwoofer
2 side speakers
2 rear speakers

You cannot mismatch speakers from two separate systems.
