Have 12 hours of music on laptop and want a more compact speaker system than the 2 speaker and sub-woofer system.
Can we hook it up to our stereo and run house speakers? We're having a outside party and would like to be able to use the music

There are many options for speakers as you probably already know. I personally like speakers from Creative labs.

Im looking for a powerful speaker system to use with my computer for playing music. Im looking for as powerful of a system that could fit under a desk for a reasonable price. What specs should I be looking for in terms of watts etc.

Look for the reviews and the price. Trust me, that's all you need.
If you want to try to decide for yourself look for max wattage (although this doesn't always mean louder/clearer sound), speaker sizes, types of speakers included (tweeter, mid-range, woofer, subwoofer), whether the sub (if included) is ported or not, frequency response (although it can be misleading) and try finding out the materials used (wood is good and some plastics can be good, cheap plastic = resonance = bad sound).
