Portable PA System building and home made speakers/amplifiers...?

Alex J

PROBLEM:
What happens if you put a 2 ohm speaker in a circuit that is Suppose to have a 10 ohm speaker?

Context:
I work out 1.2amps @ 12 volts = 14.4 watts power @ 10 ohms
then,-------1.2amps @ 9 volts = 10.8 watts power @ 7.5 ohms

these are all odd numbers.
what will happen if i put a 2 ohm or 4 ohm speaker in one of those circuits?

note. the amplifier will have a fan on it...

this is the amplifier: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=220055

Answer
It looks like you misread the specs. What I see is 32 watts into 8 ohms. I don't see anything about a 10 ohm speaker. It will operate at voltages from 10 to 44 volts DC. This means you could power this amp with a 12 volt battery with no problem.
2 ohm speakers are normally meant for high output current amplifiers. They get the most power out for those situations that need the power or where you simply want the power.
An amplifier that is designed for 10 ohm speakers probably needs 10 ohm speakers. You'll see higher ohm speakers in many battery powered devices. This limits the amount of power demand from the battery and helps with battery life. Pagers, hand held 2-way radios, etc, will have speakers around 35 ohms or so.
Depending on the amplifier, you can connect the 2 ohm speakers. Many amps today don't really care what the speaker impedance is, they simply put out the power. You can still adjust the volume to get the amount of sound you want. Still, other amps are fussy about the speaker impedance. You'll need to determine if your amp is one that can handle about any impedance or needs the correct impedance.

£5000 budget for home cinema including TV, amp speakers, blu-ray player what should I buy?

Answer
When assembling a complete A/V system for a home cinema I recommend putting the greatest emphasis on the display, which will always be the centerpiece of any good home cinema system. In this regard the Panasonic V Series plasma TVs are currently some of the best values you will find in terms of performance versus price. With respect to the average room and viewing distance make every effort to purchase a display size no smaller than 50 inches diagonal.

The next priority item would be a good Blu-ray Disc player with high performance DVD-upscaling capability. (There are still far more movies and misc. videos available on DVD-Video than Blu-ray Disc so do not discount the importance of quality DVD upscaling.) With your budget in mind I strongly recommend the nonpareil OPPO Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. (Yes there are other BD players that provide nearly equal performance with Blu-ray Discs for less money, however at the present time those manufacturers simply are unable to match OPPOâs expertise when it comes to upconverting/upscaling content on DVDs.) If you also enjoyâor have an interest inâplaying video games (or have children) then one of the latest Sony PlayStation 3 consoles would be an acceptable alternative.

First and foremost you should avoid a home-cinema-in-a-box, especially with the budget within which youâre working. Below, Iâve listed several highly competent, well-respected performers to choose from when it comes to multichannel A/V home cinema receivers. As a general rule of thumb I recommend receivers rated for a minimum of at least 90 to 100 Watts CONTINUOUS PER CHANNEL into 8 Ohms while driving at least two or more channels. Even better yet would be a multichannel receiver rated for continuous output into 4 Ohms (if you can find one in your price range.) The ultimate equipment configuration would consist of a preamplifier / processor (aka âpre-proâ) combined with a multichannel audio power amplifier or multiple audio power amplifiers.

A multichannel home cinema loudspeaker system is the most difficult item to recommend because subjective and personal preferences always play a major role in the selection process. Nevertheless, I have listed some of the better brands and models from which to choose. By the way, if need be, rather than compromise in order to acquire a 7.1-channel or greater surround sound system, itâs better to start with a higher quality, higher performance 5.1 surround sound loudspeaker system now to which you can easily add loudspeakers for the remaining surround and/or LFE channels later. On the other hand, when it comes to very high performance, low cost subwoofers the choice is simple: choose either a HSU Research ULS-15 or an SV Sound Ultra-13-equipped subwooferâwhichever provides the lowest total cost to youâif you want one or more of the most cost-effective, high performance commercial subwoofers currently available.

To complete your system add: one of the Logitech Harmony universal remotes, heavy duty loudspeaker mounting brackets or stands, good quality interconnects and loudspeaker cabling (which need not be expensive,) cable management accessories, power conditioners and a couple of display and system optimization (aka âcalibrationâ) discs.
