It's hard to recommend AMD for a new build, because Sandy Bridge performs so much better.

The low-cost Phenom II X4 8xx models aren't even real Phenoms, just renamed Athlons without L3 cache. Their performance suffers in CPU-intensive games like Starcraft 2 and Skyrim.

The Phenom II X4 970 is probably AMD's best bang/buck processor for gaming, but even the Core i3 2100 matches it's performance in most titles. And nothing from AMD touches the Core i5 2400 or higher.

But if you wanted to go with AMD to keep costs down, you'd be looking at:

GPU - HIS IceQ X Turbo Radeon HD 6950 2GB

CPU- Phenom II X4 970

Mobo- Gigabyte GA970A AM3+

Power supply- Seasonic S12II 620W 80 Plus
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096

RAM- G.SKILL Ripjaws 4GB DDR3 1600
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231277

HDD- Seagate Barracuda 1TB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148697

DVD Burner - free with hard drive, promo offer

Case - Cooler Master HAF 912
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119233

That's $810, you could double your RAM to 8gb for $30 more. The Radeon HD 6950 generally outperforms the GTX 560 Ti, especially in Battlefield 3. The overclocked 2gb model linked above will almost match a GTX 570.

Definitely a Core i5 2400 or 2500K system... I'm thinking a classified edition 448 core GTX 560 Ti, if not a GTX 570...

is this a good gaming pc?

Answer
That's a pretty sweet rig, should definitely chew everything you throw at it.
Best way to score these kinds of setups in terms of power is to benchmark it and compare with other gaming systems.
