Auxiliary Stereo Speakers?

_

What are the best speakers I can buy that have the red and white ports on the back? I have a budget of £50.00 but I just want some that can sit beside my PC for desktop use.

Thanks all! (They must have those red/white ports!)

Answer
Hello,

Sounds like you are located in the UK. 50 pounds is about $75 USD. For that price you have a number of options depending on whether you want traditional stereo speakers or a subwoofer/satellite system. Also, there's alot more options if you were willing to buy something used on eBay for example. But I will assume you want to buy new.

Here are some of the better powered desktop stereo speakers in your price range:

M-Audio Studiophile AV30
Bose Companion 2
Behringer MS16

If you want more bass, the Logitech Z523 is a subwoofer/satellite system for about $75 which looks pretty good as well. But this will take up more space than the other three. Any of these should give you good sound though. Amazon.com is a good place to look at these items and compare user reviews.

By the way, you can easily convert the red & white RCA plugs you're talking about into 3.5mm for use with any speakers that need it. Here is an example:

Hope that helps.

Answer
Another option is to just buy normal wired speakers, and then get a wireless transmitter for them.

I have one such transmitter for my rear speakers from Rocketfish which is only sold in stores here, but I'm sure other similar products exist.

The way this works is there's a transmitter you connect to your stereo's rear speaker ports, and then there's the wireless receiver you connect to speakers to. Both the transmitter and receiver need to be plugged in, or they can just use batteries. The transmitter can even plug into your receiver so when it powers on, the transmitter does too, and establishes a connection with the rear speakers.

It was about $100, and works with any speaker that uses a standard red/black wire connection. Very easy to set up, and it works pretty well.
