I'm looking for a good quality speaker and subwoofer set. In the price range of $50-$175 doesn't have to be top of the line stuff but i do want it to be loud and clear. Any ideas or any ideas on good sub-woofers at least?
Apologies, I'm looking for something that i can hook my ipod and laptop to. If it can't do both then just my ipod.

Answer
Hello,

You didn't say what your application is.....home stereo, PC, bedroom, etc.

You probably won't find a very good non-amplified subwoofer/speaker system for a home theatre for under $200, but there are a number of amplified designs marketed as computer speakers which could probably do a fine job, provided your room isn't too large.

These models have received high reviews on the web and probably represent some of the best of what is in your price range:

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX
Logitech Z623 THX
Logitech X-540 5.1
Harman Kardon SoundSticks III

The Klipsch probably play the cleanest and loudest, and the HK's would probably work best for more up close listening next to your PC. You can read reviews for these on Amazon.com

Hope that helps.

Bose Companion 3 Series II or Logitech z623?

I was looking for some really good computer speakers and i found these two. I want a system that has very good bass and can be loud. Which one of these is better??

Answer
Neither... and especially not Bose.

My recommendations... I have 2 specific recommendations in your price range that will completely blow these guys away.

AudioEngine A2 ($200)

Pros: Unbeatable in this price. Real wood cabinets, Kevlar woofers, Silk Dome tweeters. Essentially, these are high-end bookshelf speakers posing as computer speakers.

Cons: No Subwoofer. (But still puts out smooth bass)

Klipsch Pro-Media 2.1 ($150)

Pros: Has a sub. Great, clear sound, especially compared to Bose and logitech.

Cons: Not quite as clear as AudioEngine. Made of plastic like 99% of other computer speakers.

There you have two systems that will completely win-out against Bose and Logitech for cheaper. Use the money you saved to buy a good sound card or DAC. Then you will have an awesome system.
