I have recently brought a 5:1 surround sound speakers system but have found that I need a sound card for my PC and cannot plug it directly into my ipod or laptop. Is there any way to convert the 5outputs into a simple earphone jack?

If so where would I get one? Thank you

Answer
yes there is a way to convert it. however you won't be using the 5.1 system to its full potential.
if you are confused about what to buy. go to radio shack or something similar. take your new speaker manual, and they'll get you the right connectors.

the best option is to replace your desktops sound card. there are many available. and they are easy to install.
newegg.com has 5.1 sound cards for as little as $20.
stores like best buy will install them, but its cheaper to find a friend that can do it and invite them over for pizza or something.

I would like to know if anyone else has or is experiencing the same issue as I am. I don't know if this is just coincidental or if this is the cause to it, but yesterday I wasn't thinking and my PC and speakers were turned on, although the speakers weren't currently in use. i.e. playing music etc. But I unplugged it from the power board adapter thingy and it made this noise. Ever since then the amp changes the inputs by itself. I always have it on input 1 stereo 3D and it changes by itself to 4,5 & AUX all at once. It won't let me turn it off, it wont let me change the dial to adjust the volume, when I do all these things nothing happens... I've tried turning off PC and speakers etc. At one stage I restarted comp and put the amp on and it worked so I put it on the usual setting and music was playing great, then I went to turn the volume down via the dial thing and it wouldn't change, it would just stay on the same setting.I'm very confused and upset because I bought these recently and paid quite abit for them, so I am unsure what to do... So please anyone's help would be of great appreciation.

Thank you

Answer
Try unplugging the speakers from the computer and the wall outlet completely, wait one to two minutes then re-plug the unit back in, to see if this will reset the processor, check the manual to see if there is a procedure to reset the unit to default...

PCM vs. RAW issues...?

Jacob

Okay, So I have a 32-inch Insignia LCD Tv, IT has an Aux output, I have this output going into a Logitech z506 Surround sound system. I have tried to set the television to both PCM and RAW but both act the same way with the system. Only when I turn the system up all the way do I get any sound, and even then it is very faint. IDEAS???

Answer
This sounds like you are confused with your inputs and outputs and also your analogue and digital signal connections.

First things first, the labeling on Insignia TVs is pretty clear. Any socket marked "In" will not give sound or picture out. For that you need a socket marked "Out". [Do you see what they did there? - "Out" means out and "In" means in from the TVs point of view.] So if the AUX socket is really "AUX In" or "AV In" then it's a socket for giving the TV a signal and not one for getting a signal from the TV. Have another read of your manual. Look at the sections marked "Connecting a home theater system" and "Using analog audio"

Next, once you have found the correct socket then you need to use the appropriate connection to the z906 speaker kit. From what you described it sounds to me like you are using an AUX Input on the TV and connecting it to the red & white RCA sockets on the speaker kit. We have already covered how Inputs are not for getting a signal from a TV. When you turn the volume up you are hearing something called crosstalk. The is a tiny amount of sound leakage in the circuits.

Your best connection for sound Out from the TV should either be the "DIGITAL OUTPUT (Coax)" or "DIGITAL OUTOUT" on an optical connector. Second best connection for audio is "AUDIO OUT" on red & white RCA/phono connectors. 3rd choice is the headphone socket. These last two connection methods are analogue stereo audio. You connect to the z906 red & white RCA/phono sockets.

Changing the TV audio settings from PCM to RAW and back only affects the DIGITAL outputs. The best TV setting for your z906 kit depends on the sources connected and how they are set up. If you can make sure that nothing higher than Dolby Digital or DTS gets to the TV from Blu-ray players and games consoles then the z906 will be able to cope with RAW. It will then pass the DD and DTS bitstream signal to the z906 kit to decode in proper discrete high quality surround sound. If you can't set it up like this then use PCM instead. The TV will downconvert surround sound to a basic digital version of 2-channel audio. This isn't as good and it wastes the abilities of the z906 kit.

I just got a 2012 Honda Civic. Would getting a 6 speaker/subwoofer +amp system in my car have any negative consequences or risks? The car has only 4 speakers and the sound quality is mediocre. I love music, and feel disappointed every time I listen to the stock radio/speakers. I am looking at getting Polk Speakers and a Kicker subwoofer and amp and a hd radio. All told it would be 1,000 or slightly more. Would getting that installed affect the electrical system/engine/battery/computers in the car/warranty etc.?
The Geek Squad at Best Buy would be the ones installing it. With them doing it, would there be any risk?

Answer
If you take it to the right people probably not. Make sure to do some good research of audio/custom car care centers in your area.

I have always wanted a Bose anything because I love the quality and sound from everything they have done. I know they can be a bit spendy. If there are some home theater speakers from other well known and reliable brands that work just as well I am definitely all ears. I am just in the market of buying a really great speaker system!

Answer
Call into any real Hi-Fi store and they will show you any number of speakers which will out perform Bose for considerably less money, a few that spring instantly to mind are Bowers and Wilkins, Dali Ikon and Tannoy.

Don't buy into the 'Bose are best because they're expensive' ideal.

Bose aren't expensive, they're dear, there is a difference.

How to I wirelessly transmit video and audio from my computer to my TV and speaker system?

Jason

I haven't bought a TV or speakers, but I'm going to want to transmit most of the regular cable/satalite programing, movies, audio through my computer into the TV and separate speaker system. Do they make Bluetooth TV sets and Bluetooth speaker systems, and even if they did would I be able to transmit from my computer to both or just one? What other wireless options are available to me the only cord I want attached to my TV is the power and wireless reviecer and same with my stereo system. How do I do it?

A company called TERK (a division of Audiovox.com) sells audio/video transmitter/receivers. Expensive.
In a way it me less expensive to have a second satellite receiver.

I am looking for a wireless Home theater system â not necessarily entirely wireless, but I want to be able to listen to music in couple of rooms at the same time without having to use wires to those rooms. Looking within the $350-$500 range. Can any of you recommend a good Home theater system in this price range? Please give me the model number or names. Thanks.

Answer
Some HTS provide a wireless output for the two rear speakers, to avoid long cables, since they are placed far from the A/V receiver.
I'm not aware of a 5.1 system that is wireless for its five+1 speakers.
A company called Terk (owned by Audiovox) makes transmitters for what you need.
Visit: http://www.audiovox.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/terk.jsp
Click "Wireless Audio/Video Transmission Control".

Anyone know of an affordable home theater system with wireless rear speakers?

andrewfier

Long story short, I'm looking for a surround sound system with wireless rear speakers because I lease an apartment and don't want to drill holes to hide the wiring from the front to the back of the room.

I know of some systems that have wireless rear speakers, but the cheapest one I've seen was a BOSE system for $1,499 which is a bit much for an apartment. I don't need it to be that powerful. I've got other tenants to contend with.

Any suggestions would be great.

Answer
Most home theater systems that offer "wireless" rear speakers will still have some wires to the rear speakers. Basically they have a transmitter on the main receiver unit and a smaller receiver box that the rear speakers are wired to.
Panasonic's current set of home theater sets have the wireless rear speakers packaged with the theater systems. you can find those sets starting at around $300.

The Sony cd player has the USB port, but when I connect my phone to it, NO DICE. CD player reads "not supported." You'd think my SG3 with the latest version of Android OS would be able to handle this seemingly easy task...

The entire setup includes the control center, cd player, blu ray player, direct TV box, and of course a TV and the speakers for the radio/CDs. You'd think with all of this technology i'd be able to play Slacker or Pandora through that system and my speakers. Any help? I've had zero luck thus far with lots of research.

I have a Pantech Crux from Verison, and it's a media phone. It already has a speaker on it, but I was wondering if I could somehow connect it to my sound system to amp up the music. I do have a USB cord for it. Is it possible? It does have a normal sized headphone jack (3.5mm). It is NOT a droid/android/smart phone. Just a feaure phone.

Answer
It really depends on what type of input your sound system has - if it is RCA get a 3.5mm to RCA cable - if it is 3.5mm, get a 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable.

Very easy.

How to connect Creative T6100 speakers to Panasonic LED TV ?

Hi, I have a Creative T6100 5.1 Speaker system. I want to cinnect it to my Panasonic LED TV. There is only one Digital Audio out from TV (Optical Out). However my Creative 5.1 speaker have three 3.5mm pins. When I connect any one of the pins to TV headphone slot, one pair of speakers work. It can be 2 fronts, 2 rears or the center one. Can anyone tell me, how to play all 5 speakers without using any AV receiver ? AV receivers cost more than 10 times than my Creative T6100 speakers.

Answer
The best you can get (without spending more money than your speakers are worth) is stereo (front right and left?) since surround output from the TV is digital and your speakers ... which are really computer speakers designed to connect to the three mini-stereo jacks on a computer audio card ... are analog. You can, as you have found out, use the headphone jack or buy an optical to stereo converter (Monoprice, Amazon, etc) to do much the same thing.

The device at the link is the next level up, or get a used A/V receiver with analog multichannel outputs plus RCA to ministereo converters. Finally, you can sell your 6100's and buy speakers with an optical input.

Thems the options.

Strange problem with speaker system with my home theater?

RockiesFan

Hi. I have a strange problem with my Bose speaker system in my home theater. When I am watching a DVD, there are two ways I can hear the sound, either regular or digital. The digital sound is a lot better than the regular. But when I select the digital sound, the movies play fine, but at random parts, the sound turns off for a few seconds and then comes back. It is very strange. And I have noticed that when it turns off and comes back, the visual and audio are not in synch. This problem never happens when I select the regular sound.

By the way, when I say "select the sound on the Bose system" I really mean the wires. The regular sound wires work for T.V., V.C.R., and D.V.D., but the digital sound wires work for only D.V.D.

But what's going on? This is such a strange problem. And I know that my wires aren't loose or anything so that is not the problem.

Thanks.

I am looking to purchase a speaker system for my boyfriends bedroom. The one he has now was 2 speakers and a subwoofer and sounded great and was loud enough to fill the entire house. Sadly he blew the speakers out. I want something similar not like a 5 speaker surround sound deal and around a $200 budget. Primary use is music. Something he can keep on the desk and move around.

Answer
I heard a story from one of my family members that my uncle is notorious for blowing out speakers, but he never blew a JBL speaker.
- Some good receiver speaker brands are polk audio, energy, monoprice, klipsch, M&K, JBL.ect
- Some good receiver brands are onkyo, denon, pioneer, yamaha, sony.

Also I am not sure if your looking for computers speakers that plug into the colored outputs on the back of a computer.
- Some good computer speaker brands are logitech, creative inspire, cyber acoustics (ca), altec lansing.ect

- At crutchfield (never shoped at this site tho) the 5.1 energy take classic is on sale for $200!, it's originally $300-500.
- If not you can go to the speaker brand sites and look at individual speakers and then look at sites/stores that sell them.

How do I know that the computer I am ordering online has DirectX 8.1 or better?

heath1500

I am about to buy a new computer. The game I love to play needs those sound and video cards. How do I know the computer has those cards? And does it have to be those cards specifically? Any suggestions for a low cost computer that will support amateur games. Nothing too crazy. Mostly command and conquer.

Answer
Command and conquer system requirements:
Required System:
Microsoft Windows XP
PC with 1.6 Ghz equivalent or higher processor
256 MB of system RAM
512 MB of system RAM for online play with 3 or more players
6 GB available hard disk space
8x speed or faster CD-ROM drive or DVD-ROM drive (for the Collector's Edition)
64 MB GeForce3-class video card. The game only officially supports cards with ATI (Radeon 8500 or greater) and Nvidia chipsets, and the Intel GMA 900 and GMA 950 products. The GeForce 4 MX is not supported
Sound card with speakers or headphones
Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device
56.6 Kbps or better modem for 1v1 online play
Broadband connection for online play with 3 or more players
DirectX 9.0c or above.

Minimum Required Specs:
Windows XP or Windows 2000
1.3 GHz Intel Pentium IV or AMD Athlon processor
256 MB RAM
Nvidia GeForce2 or equivalent video card with 32 MB RAM
DirectX 9.0b compatible sound card
4 GB available hard disk space
Please note that while you will be able to play The Battle for Middle-earth(tm) with the specifications above, play experience can benefit from additional RAM, above the required 256 MB
Nvidia GeForce2 MX is not supported.

You need to meet or exceed these requirements to play this game. These are going to be met with all new computers except for the video card requirements. If you get on board video you will probably be running an 8mb card where you need 32mb of video memory. So make sure it has at least 32mb of video memory.

I'm 15 years old and im getting my first car in october. Since I'm a kid i wont have a lot of money to spend on a sound system. What is the best i can get without having to spend a lot of money? (over $2000)

Answer
You can get a nice system for well under $2,000.

Get a decent Pioneer deck, they're nice because they include crossovers for your main speakers. Taking the low frequency out of them will make even the factory speakers a lot clearer and louder.

Get a single 10" or 12" sub, get a decent brand, here's where to spend a little of the money to get some performance out of it. I'd go with at least JL. Stay away from anything like MTX, pioneer, RF etc. A single 12" JL will be a lot louder than two crap subs anyway. Then get a decent amp, a small Alpine is a good amp for a sub. Around 250 RMS will be plenty to power one sub. With everything installed you should be around $1,000, maybe less. Need to spend a little more? Get a little more power to that sub. A little more? Get a better sub, Boston Accoustics makes great subs. A little more yet? Upgrade the factory speakers and put an amp to them.

I am looking for a home theater subwoofer that goes lower than 20hz ?

Emmanuel S

I want a subwoofer that will play the very low frequency in my home theater ? I have about 2000 to spend?

Answer
Brand new subwoofer systems with a suggested retail price less than roughly US$5000 that also have total harmonic distortion (THD) of less than 10 percent, minimal power compression and reasonably flat (±3 dB), usable passband output* of at least 100 dB below 20 Hz are very rare.

Though there may be a few other subwoofer systems that may come close, the only turnkey subwoofer systems of which I am currently aware that essentially meet all of the aforementioned performance criteria at a retail price of no more than US$2000 are SVSoundâs PB13-Ultra Powered Subwoofer, possibly the Seaton SubMersive and the now discontinued Epik Conquest. Arguably the only subwoofer system nearest the suggested retail price of US$2000 that would surpass the performance of these subwoofers in nearly every category would be a do-it-yourself subwoofer system constructed with one of the highly regarded and very expensive Audiopulse LMS-Ultra drivers (formerly of TC Sounds fame,) powered by a high performance, very high power audio power amplifier.

Can a 2004 Mazda 3 stock stereo system power replacement speakers, nicely? Maybe Kicker or Polk Audio?

Stock stereo, 6-disc in dash CD player, 6 speaker system(4 6x8's leg level in front and rear doors, 2 eye level tweeters in front doors). I am no audiophile, nor a tech-spert. I think I have a blown front 6x8, and just want to replace them all, with some good thump, but can plug and play in the stock system/location. You are all the best!

Answer
yes and no.
the radio will send enough wattage for the speakers to play at moderate to low volumes but when you start to crank the volume past halfway they will sound distorted because the radios internal amp will be overworking itself trying to supply the necessary wattage, for best result you would need a amp on them

Can you connect a 6-channel surround sound system to a laptop?

Sagnik D

Is there any way to connect 3 stereo-mini connectors for 6-channel speaker system, to my laptop. I normally use just the green cable to connect it, but I want to hook up my surround sound. So I have a yellow and black cable as well. And I was wondering if there was any external device that could connect all of them to my audio port.

Answer
No. Surround sound are mostly in 5.1 and some blu ray disc movies have a 7.1 surround sound. They are coded in either Dolby Digital or DTS. To be able to play the surround sound material you need a decoder, and they are usually found in a receiver, home theater in a box or a preamp. I have not seen any Lop Top computer with either a Dolby or DTS logo. Hope this will help you out.

How can I get my jWIN JS-P701 2.4GHz Wireless Home Theather Speaker System to play from all of the speakers? It only came with one adapter for the red/white audio cords.

Answer
That is such a goofy speaker set up and a first for me.

OK here is what is going on. This is a powered speaker set with no Dolby decoder. It will accept for surround only 3 sets of RCA's from a DVD player. I will include a link to a DVD player that has theses so you know what to look for. Make sure to look at the back panel image.

This speaker set is really just a modified PC set of speakers.( note the three mini to RCAs adapters only available in the box mind you).

If you don't want to get a new DVD player you can get a home theater receiver with what ever digital audio connection you have, as long as the receiver has pre outs to hook up to the speaker set. Will include a link to the one that has this. But that is counter intuitive to buying a powered speaker set.

Your only other option is to hook to up to a PC with the correct 5.1 sound card.

If it is a new purchase I suggest take it back and get a 5.1 system that will work with your existing equipment.

PS also look up white van scam I think you may have been had.

Does anyone know of any good wireless computer speakers?

B-Ryan

I just need a speaker system with the two rear speakers wireless. Or any other suggestions on how to make an exsisting sytem wireless with like add ons or some kind of device? I want it to be a 5.1 system.

Answer
There are no specific wireless speakers for Computers, you can use any wireless speakers or headphones, and attach it to your PC sound output, and you can get those from Best Buy, or similar storesâ¦
The speakers does not control the sound system such as 5.1, this option is controlled from your DVD sound options, or other sound utility controlling your PC sound..

What is a good home surround sound system?

I have been looking at wal mart but I know thats not my only option. I'm looking for a good surround sound system with a good subwoofer. Also, is there any systems that are wireless. I hate having wires hanging all over the house.

Answer
A good surround sound system is completely objective to your personal satisfaction. I have clients that are not satisfied until the ears hurt and others have a little more sense.

Here is a good guide:

Take a 15 x 15 room. Choose five 100 watt speakers and your sub. You will only play your speakers at 50% max volume anyway. This will help you make a good decision.

As for wireless. No system is truly wireless. Even ones with back speakers are not wireless. The have wires running to a module that sends a signal to the front receiver, but they too have wires.

Get ceiling speakers and have a professional install them if wires bother you. This will rid you of this problem.

Are my home theater speakers a fire hazard?

Pink Denia

A friend of my husband's installed our inexpensive home theater system as a favor. He has the wires for the speakers (mounted around the room) coming up out of the vents in the floor. Granted, the vents are in a good spot for speaker placement. But is this a fire hazard?

Answer
Under most circumstances the risk of fire due to a short in loudspeaker cables is virtually non-existent.

If your loudspeaker cables use the typical PVC insulation found on most lower-cost or generic A/V cabling then you do run a somewhat higher risk of developing a problem. Prolonged or repeated exposure to elevated temperature and airflow rates can, over time, result in degradation of the PVC insulation in large part due to plasticizer migration and volatility. This can lead to increased brittleness and crazing in the exposed portion of the insulation, which could eventually result in failure of the insulation.

Under these circumstances the most likely result is that the protection circuit that protects the output stage of the audio amplifier would kick-in, or worse, the output stage of the amplifier could self-destruct; depending on how well the unit was designed and built. There are very few (well-designed) audio amplifiers that would pose a fire hazard when the speaker outputs are shorted.

You have a couple of fairly simple choices to effectively mitigate the threat of potential problems: (1) replace the loudspeaker cabling with either a jacketed loudspeaker cabling or use polyolefin (i.e., polypropylene) insulated cables; or (2) install 1/2" to 1" diameter plenum rated or riser-rated halogen-free (aka low smoke zero halogen or LSZH) nonmetallic corrugated flexible conduit (aka âinnerduct,â) over the (speaker) cabling wherever the cabling passes through the air ducting. Electrical and datacom/telecom suppliers, better hardware stores and A/V dealers/installers should have innerduct in stock.

One last item - you can reduce the amount of self-heating that occurs with higher cable resistances by choosing loudspeaker cabling that has a larger wire gauge. Speaker cabling is generally available in stock wire gauge sizes ranging from 4 AWG up to 16 AWG and higher; the lower the number the larger the gauge of wire. As a general rule of thumb you should always use the lowest wire gauge you can afford and never less than a single run of 14 AWG cable. Though rarely a significant issue, self-heating varies in direct proportion to the cableâs resistance, (which increases as the wire gauge decreases, i.e., smaller overall conductor cross-sectional area and/or the cable length increases,) the impedance of the loudspeaker and the power output of the audio amplifier.

Why does my car speaker turn off when I hit bumps in the road?

speaker vibration system

speaker vibration system image

ajcadoo

I have a 2006 Scion xB with stock audio system (except an added subwoofer in the rear). All speakers operate normally except my front right tweeter (in the dash of vehicle). It turns on and off when there are excessive road vibrations. It is highly noticeable when it turns off, and very annoying. I have checked the radio deck and all connections are fine. It happens with CD, iPod, and Radio. Any tips?

Answer
It could be the voice coil on the tweeter. When the tweeter cuts off pull the tweeter out and measure the resistance with an ohm meter. If the meter doesn't have any reading then the tweeter is defective.

You can also pull the tweeter out and take it to a stereo shop to have them test it.

How do I increase the quality of my car sound system?

HNIC43

The car that I own is a 2001 Dodge Neon ES and the flyer that was advertising it said that it already has a premium sound system in it but it does not sound like it to me.

Answer
Here's a reeeaaaallllllly long answer for you:

Many people don't know what quantifies a "good" sound system. And just because your car was advertised as having a "premium" sound system doesn't really mean much of anything.

Audiophiles generally refer to the following qualities in determining how "good" a sound system is: Imaging, staging, dynamics, and spectral balance.

I won't go deeply into each of these qualties, but I'll touch on a couple of them:

-----------------------------------------------------------

1) Spectral-balance:::
This is the sound system's ability to play evenly across the entire audible spectrum, which is usually defined as 20hz to 20khz (20 vibrations/second to 20,000 vibrations per second).

To achieve an even balance across the above mentioned frequency range, a "good" system will use specialized speakers to cover various parts of the frequency range: Subwoofers handle the lowest bass (20hz-80hz), woofers would handle the bass chores, midranges would handle the frequencies above that, and tweeters are sent frequencies in the highest ranges (about 5khz and above).

In a standard car audio system, you will usually find a single speaker trying to handle the entire frequency range by itself (although sometimes it's broken into a 2-way design, with a tweeter sitting on top of the main speaker). The reason that this doesn't work well is that the physical properties that make a speaker good at a certain frequency range make it bad in another frequency range. For instance, a subwoofer is good at moving very large volumes of air with it's large cone area and heavy mass. But that heavy mass prevents it from moving quickly enough to handle the high frequencies.

Additionally, cars introduce alot of noise to the equation, and most of this noise is in the lower frequencies. Because of this, the audio system has to play a lot louder in those frequencies to compensate for the "noise floor" as it is called. If the noise generated by driving is equal to 48db, then the speaker producing sound in those frequencies has to be 48db louder than the rest of the auido system to compensate for it. 48db translates to 32 times more power needed!

So, placing a high-power subwoofer into the system allows it to make up for the noise floor. For the rest of the frequency range, having seperate high-quality speakers play the different sections of the spectrum will help you achive spectral balance.
-----------------------------------------------------------

2) Imaging:::::

If you go into a high-end audio store and listen to some well-recorded orchestral music on very expensive speakers (not a surround sound system, just plain old stereo) you may be amazed at what you hear. Despite just listening to two speakers, you can hear hear each individual instrument clearly localize in the space that it occupied in the recording environment. You will be able to tell that the woodwinds were to the left and behind the strings, if the venue was large or small, all in a very 3D effect. How can that be with only two speakers? It's because the recording not only picked up the sound that was being played, it also recorded the temporal and spatial cues of the environment. Played on a quality audio system, the spatial cues are re-created, fooling your ears into hearing the same thing. This is called imaging, and in a car audio system it comes from quality speakers, where they're positioned, and how they are angled into the listening environment.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Staging:::::
Staging refers to the system's ability to create a "stage" in front of the listener, as opposed to sounding like the music is coming from the doors, or from behind. Like imaging, good staging comes from quality speakers, where they're positioned, and how they are angled into the listening environment.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dynamics::::
Refers to the system's ability to play loud and soft music. Adding power amplifiers will allow the system to play more dynamically.

-----------------------------------------------------------

So, after that long-winded explanation, it all boils down to this question: Is it all worth the trouble to upgrade? That depends on you - the listener. The best way to make this decision is to listen to some well recorded music on a your system, then listen to the same music on a quality system. What you'll likely hear (depending on the source music being played), is that there are bass lines in the music that the standard system isn't playing audibly, that there are imaging cues that your system isn't playing, or that the music sounds like it's coming low from your doors.

Does the system play nice "tight" bass? With some music, the bass is obviously more pronounced than others, but not necessarily as you would think. For instance, "Enya" CDs are often thought of as "light" music, wheras rap CDs are thought of as bass-heavy. But Enya's biggest hit CD "Sheppard's Moon" has a lot more low frequnency material than the majority of rap albums. Most people wouldn't know that unless they listened to it on a quality sound system with a good subwoofer.

So, after listening to the "good" system, did you notice the difference? (Some people's hearing is not good enough to hear the extremes of the frequency range, particularly as you age) Was the difference important enough for you to want to spend money on a good system? Do you even listen to the kind of muscial material that would benefit from a high-quality audio system? Most pop music and rap these days are not good quality recordings. And unless you listen to satellite radio, the source material isn't good enough to make a large investment into your sound system worthwhile.

Hope that helps

How to know the loudness of a speaker system?

sharma_k33

guys ,i want to buy a speaker system for my living room and hear my music loud to the xtent of waking my neighours. If a speakers rating is given in RMS , can anybody tell me what should be the good RMS rating for this.
is a 50 w rms system good enough for a large room?

Answer
The maximum output level is measured in dB SPL (sound pressure level). Manufacturers specify the Sensitivity (dB SPL at 1 watt rms at 1 meter) and the maximum power handling of the speaker in Watts rms..
The speaker with the highest sensitivity will be the loudest, but it's maximum loudest level will be dependent of its maximum power handling. Example: Sensitivity 100 dB SPL/1W/1meter, max power 256 watts. For every doubling of the power, the SPL increases 3dB, so at 2w=103; at 4W=106; at 8w=109; at 8w=112; at 16w=115; at 32w=118; at 64w=121; at 128w=124 and at 256w=127 dB SPL. That is very, very loud!
Now as you stand farther than 1 meter, the SPL lowers by 6dB for every doubling of the distance. At 8 meters (~25 feet), the max SPL will be 109 dB (loud enough for a dancing area).
Added: One more detail, is Power Compression, as the speaker is continuously running at maximum power, its voice coil heats up, then its resistance increases, so the power that the amplifier delivers to it decreases, lowering the SPL. Some manufacturers do a very good job of lowering the voice coil temperature, by improving ventilation.
Look at the spec's of this one:
http://www.jbl.com/home/products/product_detail.aspx?prod=ES90BK&Language=ENG&Country=US&Region=USA&cat=BFS&ser=ES
sensitivity 91 dB SPL, max power 225W. High quality, but not very high level.
Compare to this one:

What is a good desktop computer speaker system?

palman18

I want to buy some new computer speakers since my old cheap speakers broke and I'm sick of using a gaming headset for music and movies. I am looking to spend around $150-200 on a good speaker system. I am a "semi-audiophile" and I appreciate good sound. I would prefer a system with a good balance of highs, mids, and lows and would rather have a good 2.1 system than a cheap surround sound system. I would prefer a system with a subwoofer, but if there are any that have good bass without one, I am open to it. I don't have a sound card on my computer, but I am open to buying one if it makes a considerable difference. Any help is appreciated.

Answer
Here are a few speaker systems that fall within your price range.
