How do you set up a basic stage set for music?

I have a band and I want to know what is the most basic setup for singing like microphones,PA Speakers,Mixers,etc.We're also on a small budget.

Your needs will vary dpending on size of the band, and the venue you are playing. You should be able to buy this stuff used on craigslist or other places

Speakers -both low end and high end
Floor monitors
Cables
Mixer-minimum 12 channel is recommended

Amps-to power the system

Microphones-vocals, will the drums or guitar amps be mic'd?

Lights-if you perform in dark bars and nightclubs, you may these..at least 1-2 racks.

Extras:

compressor/limiter/gate
Effects-for vocals and instruments
Insurance-getting your crap stolen or damaged sucks
Extra cables


You can do without some of this stuff, but some things may suffer

what to look for when buying Speakers and Subwoofers for a Club?

I need to buy a sound system for a small club (300 people). Suggestion was for 2 speakers and 2 subs, however I don't know enough to compare brands, models or pricing. Please advice (simple explanation) on a couple key factors.

John's advice sounds solid, but be prepared to spend several thousand dollars on a good system.. The nightclub my brother manages has a $30,000 sound system.
