How to connect a home hi-fi stereo system to laptop/computer?

MJ

Hello music lovers. I am planning to set up myself my first ever stereo system (2 loudspeakers). In doing so I hope to make an improvement to my pretty good Creative table speakers/sub system (2.1) connected to my laptop. However I have some questions regarding how-to technical stuff, so I though I ask you guys for some advice. As I understand I need to buy 2 loudspeakers, then connect them to some sort of amplifier/receiver (not sure what's the difference) and then connect the amp directly to my laptop (in the future maybe to pc). Are there any flaws in these plans ? Also one thing really bugs me. If my laptop have standart basic/integrated sound card, is it worth installing this hi-fi system at all, because I heard that if laptop "can't produce good quality, nothing is going to help and I first need to get a decent soundcard". OR is the amplifier going to take care of business regardless of soundcard type ?

Please give me your honest opinions, tips, advice. Thank you very much and rock on. NB If it is relevant I am on a budget - planning to spend around 400-500 dollars overall. I guess that's not very hi-fi, but whatever :).

Answer
All you need
Vintage amplifier or receiver from 70s or 80s.....
Pioneer, Kenwood, Technics, Sansui, Onkyo, Zenith, Harmon Kardon, etc
$50 upwards for good quality sound.
A receiver is an amp and a tuner in one unit. Add speakers or headphones, you get a high quality stereo radio with inputs for CD, Tape, Phono etc
If it doesn't have one labeled CD, plug the CD into TAPE or AUX. Those are all line level inputs
.
Do not plug anything into PHONO except turntable leads.
PHONO is a very low level input and can be crushed into bits and messed up real baaaaad by a line level device.
A typical vintage receiver
http://audioklassiks.de/Bilder/Pioneer/PIONEER.SX-727.01.jpg

Vintage hifi speakers ....
B&W, Wharfedale, Eltax, Rogers, Tannoy, Castle Acoustics, etc
$50 upwards for good quality sound
B&W DM5....excellent......so are dozens more.
http://www.hiendoption.com/main/components/com_virtuemart/shop_image/product/B_W_DM5____Comin_4db638f6dc463.jpg

Speaker cable or use 5 amp lighting cable, does the same thing
3.5mm to 2 RCA connecting lead from computer headphone socket to any line level input on the amp.
Line level inputs are TUNER-CD-TAPE-AUX

Total $105 upwards. Beats $300 stuff bought new.
Look in Cash Converters, Cash Generators, eBay, local classifieds etc
Or get a lucky find at a car boot or garage sale and walk home with a complete set for $50

Sound will be much better than $300 computer speakers or music centers even from a cheap laptop with an old sound card.
On the link at the bottom is where I am sitting now in a small hobby room with piles of stuff, astro mirror making kit, piles of books, tape recorders, speakers, photo gear, workbench, coffee prep etc and little space left so the amps are on top of the speakers..
QED A230, Quad 34 pre-amp, Wharfedale Denton speakers on top, B&W DM5 underneath.
Cost in order......
QED....25 (auction)...
.Quad 34...20(Cash Converters)...
Denton...zero (rescued from being thrown into a skip).
DM5 ...10...(Cash Converters, covered in coffee stains, cat scratches. Sanded down, re-varnished)
Total £55 ($80)
You can do it for $80 too where you are. There is more in the USA than in the UK.
Look around, grab stuff when it's going.

Laughing all the way to the bank.
Pic taken a few days ago. It's currently all connected to an Asus notebook, nothing special or high spec.
A PC is on the floor waiting for new bits so the Asus is covering sick leave for that.
I'm doing this with it now and playing Mahler's 8th synphony (Symphony of a Thousand) written for a thousand instruments and voices.
Later it'll have Brian May on it playing guitar at the Olympic closing party, replay of last night's broadcast on BBC iPlayer, complete 3 hour video.
Good guy, Brian.
Started a PhD in astronomy, went back to uni over twenty years later to finish it.
Rock career got in the way.......look him up....group called Queen
Have fun....

Portable PA System building and home made speakers/amplifiers...?

Alex J

PROBLEM:
What happens if you put a 2 ohm speaker in a circuit that is Suppose to have a 10 ohm speaker?

Context:
I work out 1.2amps @ 12 volts = 14.4 watts power @ 10 ohms
then,-------1.2amps @ 9 volts = 10.8 watts power @ 7.5 ohms

these are all odd numbers.
what will happen if i put a 2 ohm or 4 ohm speaker in one of those circuits?

note. the amplifier will have a fan on it...

this is the amplifier: http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=220055

Answer
It looks like you misread the specs. What I see is 32 watts into 8 ohms. I don't see anything about a 10 ohm speaker. It will operate at voltages from 10 to 44 volts DC. This means you could power this amp with a 12 volt battery with no problem.
2 ohm speakers are normally meant for high output current amplifiers. They get the most power out for those situations that need the power or where you simply want the power.
An amplifier that is designed for 10 ohm speakers probably needs 10 ohm speakers. You'll see higher ohm speakers in many battery powered devices. This limits the amount of power demand from the battery and helps with battery life. Pagers, hand held 2-way radios, etc, will have speakers around 35 ohms or so.
Depending on the amplifier, you can connect the 2 ohm speakers. Many amps today don't really care what the speaker impedance is, they simply put out the power. You can still adjust the volume to get the amount of sound you want. Still, other amps are fussy about the speaker impedance. You'll need to determine if your amp is one that can handle about any impedance or needs the correct impedance.

£5000 budget for home cinema including TV, amp speakers, blu-ray player what should I buy?

Mike

Answer
When assembling a complete A/V system for a home cinema I recommend putting the greatest emphasis on the display, which will always be the centerpiece of any good home cinema system. In this regard the Panasonic V Series plasma TVs are currently some of the best values you will find in terms of performance versus price. With respect to the average room and viewing distance make every effort to purchase a display size no smaller than 50 inches diagonal.

The next priority item would be a good Blu-ray Disc player with high performance DVD-upscaling capability. (There are still far more movies and misc. videos available on DVD-Video than Blu-ray Disc so do not discount the importance of quality DVD upscaling.) With your budget in mind I strongly recommend the nonpareil OPPO Digital BDP-83 Blu-ray Disc Player. (Yes there are other BD players that provide nearly equal performance with Blu-ray Discs for less money, however at the present time those manufacturers simply are unable to match OPPOâs expertise when it comes to upconverting/upscaling content on DVDs.) If you also enjoyâor have an interest inâplaying video games (or have children) then one of the latest Sony PlayStation 3 consoles would be an acceptable alternative.

First and foremost you should avoid a home-cinema-in-a-box, especially with the budget within which youâre working. Below, Iâve listed several highly competent, well-respected performers to choose from when it comes to multichannel A/V home cinema receivers. As a general rule of thumb I recommend receivers rated for a minimum of at least 90 to 100 Watts CONTINUOUS PER CHANNEL into 8 Ohms while driving at least two or more channels. Even better yet would be a multichannel receiver rated for continuous output into 4 Ohms (if you can find one in your price range.) The ultimate equipment configuration would consist of a preamplifier / processor (aka âpre-proâ) combined with a multichannel audio power amplifier or multiple audio power amplifiers.

A multichannel home cinema loudspeaker system is the most difficult item to recommend because subjective and personal preferences always play a major role in the selection process. Nevertheless, I have listed some of the better brands and models from which to choose. By the way, if need be, rather than compromise in order to acquire a 7.1-channel or greater surround sound system, itâs better to start with a higher quality, higher performance 5.1 surround sound loudspeaker system now to which you can easily add loudspeakers for the remaining surround and/or LFE channels later. On the other hand, when it comes to very high performance, low cost subwoofers the choice is simple: choose either a HSU Research ULS-15 or an SV Sound Ultra-13-equipped subwooferâwhichever provides the lowest total cost to youâif you want one or more of the most cost-effective, high performance commercial subwoofers currently available.

To complete your system add: one of the Logitech Harmony universal remotes, heavy duty loudspeaker mounting brackets or stands, good quality interconnects and loudspeaker cabling (which need not be expensive,) cable management accessories, power conditioners and a couple of display and system optimization (aka âcalibrationâ) discs.

Answer
I would consider its a good speaker system

Have a Sony home cinema speaker set. How to get it working?

Q. I have a 5.1 Sony home cinema speaker set that used to hook up to a blu ray player, which is now dead. I needed a new player anyways, since it was American and can't play UK DVDs

So my question is, can I hook the speakers up to an amp perhaps, then link that to a UK blu ray player?

Does that make any sense?

Answer
Yes you could all depending that the amp is not going to overpower the speakers themselves. I would suggest you take one of the speakers into a electronics shop you deal with and ask what kind of receiver they would recommend for you to use with them.

P.S. most of these HTIB systems have passive subwoofers so you may need to spend some money and get a normal powered sub for the receiver to work best.

What is the ideal box of 12" speakers?

Im planning to make a home made stereo system. I got 2 speakers which is 250 watts.each! Now what should be the box size and. Gimme tips how to make it sound better.
Thank you guys.

Answer
The size (and type) of the box depends on speaker's characteristics, not their size.
1. find your speakers parameters "Fs", "Qts" and "Vas" either in their datasheet or at the internet,
2. go to this page,
http://www.mmsa.org.uk/guides/car_audio/subwoofer_box_design_calculator.html
3. and get the proper box dimensions and expected low end frequency response depending which type of box you'll choose (closed, bass-reflex, or band-pass).
Note:
if you intend to use them for home stereo as well check also this on-line calculator
http://www.linearteam.dk/default.aspx?pageid=newdriver

What soundcard would you recommend for surround sound?

goodyear36

I want to give my computer the capability of surround and also boost the quality of audio. What kind of sound card would you suggest at a reasonable price? And any suggestions for speakers?

Answer
I recommend the ASUS Xonar Essence STX (PCIe), Xonar Essence ST (PCI), Xonar HDAV1.3 Slim (PCI), or Auzen X-Fi HomeTheater HD (PCIe) sound cards above all other audio and sound cards at the present time.

When using a high-performance audio/sound card (or external DAC) and high resolution audio material youâll want to use loudspeakers that are a significant step above your run-of-the-mill multimedia loudspeaker system. I have provided a short list of reputable manufacturers of well-regarded, high-performance nearfield and midfield monitor style loudspeakers. From the list you should be able to quickly narrow-down a short list of models that will fit your budget. From there you can read reviews and seek out end-user feedback to help narrow the list down further if need be. Beyond that, the loudspeaker models that make it to your âshort list,â should be thoroughly auditioned in person at various local dealers in your areaâor better yet in your own homeâin order to ensure that the loudspeakers you will be purchasing are the best choice for your application(s) and/or musical tastes.

How much would it cost to call from the UK to Canada?

Q. I live in England and have a BT Home Hub phone thingy, and i have a good friend in Canada that i wanna call but the thing is i have nooo idea how much it's going to cost per minute, so could you help me?

Answer
Canada is a big country - 7400 km give or take, from Atlantic to Pacific. The price of a phone call would vary depending on where in Canada you are calling. Best to call your provider to get an accurate quote.

If you both have computers with Internet connection, Yahoo. Google, Skype and several others supply free calling using the computer. Most computers come with sound systems but if yours doesn't, you need a sound card, speakers and a mike. If you would have the Internet connection anyway, then these calls are, for all intents and purposes, free. I talk from Ottawa, Canada to Pretoria, South Africa almost daily for nothing.
