Do I need a receiver for a Speaker system for my home theater system?

Any speakers will require a power amplifier to be able to produce sound. Stand alone power amplifier are mainly left for the high end of the audio and are more expensive. Most consumers purchase a receiver, which has a power amplifier to drive the speakers along with other features like a AM and FM radio tuner and a pre amplifier so that you can connect other divice to the unit. This will depend on your personal budget on how much you want to spend for a receiver. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on receivers. You will notice that Onkyo and Pioneer are the top brand from the entry level to the high end. I personally use both Pioneer Elite and Onkyo receivers for well over 35 years and never had one issue. Home Theatre vs Sound system?

I'm looking for a good system mainly to play music and was wondering if I should try to piece together a sound system or just get a home theatre system since they are cheaper. My budget is $300. Would a home theatre system work as a good enough sound system to play loud music? If so, which home theatre system should I get? I've looked at a bunch of brands online, but I'm not sure what brands are a good, safe buy. Any advice would be great

You say you want mainly a music system. Will it be used only for music? If so I'd recommend an old fashioned stereo system. A stereo receiver, 2 speakers, and a small sub woofer. This is called 2.1 sound. Note that all receivers can do 2.1 also known as stereo. If you plan on using it for more than just music (i.e. gaming or home theater) you need a 5.1 system at a minimum. 5 speakers and a small sub woofer. $300 is a very low budget and you will not get something that sounds really good or really loud no matter what you get. A HTIB (home theater in a box) system would give you 5 cheap speakers, a small sub woofer, and usually an all in one unit that contains a DVD player and a power amp with some minimal switching capabilities.

A separate component 5.1 system would have an AV receiver, 5 speakers, and a sub woofer. There are also 7.1 systems but both of those are out of your price range.

I have an entry level system that I pieced together over a period of time. I had two cheap speakers (stereo) so I got an AV (audio-visual) receiver that cost me about $250. Some time later I got fantastically lucky and found a 5 speaker set on clearance that retailed for $600 on sale for $200. I got a sub woofer at the same time which cost me $350 with my tax refund. Along the way I got a cheap ($40) DVD player. A bit later I got a small hi-def TV set for $400. Then just a few months ago I got an HD-DVD player mainly for upscaling DVDs for $80. All told I spent about $820 for a decent entry level system. However my system is worth about $2100. I got lucky and shopped very well. You can see. why it took me awhile to build it up.

If you shop carefully you might be able to get a low end 5.1 AV receiver, 2 speakers, and a small sub for $300-$500. That would give you a start. Your other choice is a HTIB system which would cost $200-$1000. HTIBs are not nearly as versatile as separates but are cheaper. Separate components can cost anywhere from several hundred dollars on up.

Listen to everything you can both in your price range and a bit above it (for comparison) and let your ears be your guide.

I have a Sony home theater system and want to add outdoor speakers?

I have a Sony home theater system and in the back it has the fitted speaker plugs so there is nowhere else to plug extra speakers in. Is there and spliceing or a simple solution to run speakers outside. even something extra I could purchase?? Thanks

You can't just splice in extra speakers. It cuts the impedance load of the speakers and will fry your amp (Two 8 Ohm speakers = 4 Ohms which will destroy most home theater receivers). Also, do you want your outdoor speakers playing every time you listen to your system?

There are speaker switches with built-in protection circuitry to keep the impedance safe when multiple speakers are selected... or you could use an integrated amplifier hooked up to your tape outs to power the outdoor speakers with their own amp, probably the best sounding and safest solution as the amps in home theater receivers aren't that robust. This would also allow controlling the volume and tone of the outdoor speakers separately, wouldn't stress your receiver at all and wouldn't change the sound of your main speakers at all.

I want to buy one for my new xbox 360 becuase someone recommend it to me and said games sound a lit better and sound quality is improved. I dom't seem to understand, i know 1080p enhances game display on the screen (TV) and makes it crisp and sharp, but what does a home theater does to my 360 games or just plain old movies or anything on tv. There just 5 speakers coming from different places. When you hear something in the game the guy or any one elses voice will sound the same regarding home theater. So ehat does it really do to sound i mean it sound the same, it does make it louder but other than that is it worth it spending $200-300 for a decent home theater?

Ok most people other have never head quality sound especially if you are under 21 and listen to apple itunes etc. The reason is most of this stuff is in mp3 format, go buy the original CD and listen to the difference you will notice a huge difference stuff you never new was there. This is the kind of experience a home theather brings to gaming and movies. if a movie cost $100 million to make a good portion of that cost is sound effects and quality which requires more then the two speakers which come with the TV. The is especially true in gaming today. If you are a sniper and laying down in a field how do you know if someone is coming upon you from behind? Surround sound will allow you to hear from all sides like as if your where there. The catch is you have to spend from my personal research about 1K to get a decent system. When shopping dont just look at the watts look also at the frequancy range the lowest to highest the better the sound quality. Get the right system you will be blown away.

I have always wanted a Bose anything because I love the quality and sound from everything they have done. I know they can be a bit spendy. If there are some home theater speakers from other well known and reliable brands that work just as well I am definitely all ears. I am just in the market of buying a really great speaker system!

Call into any real Hi-Fi store and they will show you any number of speakers which will out perform Bose for considerably less money, a few that spring instantly to mind are Bowers and Wilkins, Dali Ikon and Tannoy.

Don't buy into the 'Bose are best because they're expensive' ideal.

Bose aren't expensive, they're dear, there is a difference.

If there isn't a 3.5mm INPUT jack, buy a 3.5mm to RCA two channel cord if it has red and white RCA audio INPUT jacks.
