Best 2.1 PC Speakers Under $100?

I am really unsure what may be the best overall speakers based on reviews between the two.

The Altec's have less watts, however a reviewer noted the SPL (Sound Pressure Level) spec is 95db, meaning that the actual driver/speaker efficiency is good, taking less power to drive them.

I listen to quite a variety of music. Mostly indie, alternative/progressive rock, hardcore/mathcore (screamo) and even some dubstep/rap. Bass is pretty important to me, as is the sound having depth and richness. I'm in no way a audiophile, not expecting something mind blowing for 100 bucks.

Any other recommended systems I've not mentioned? Thanks..

Logitech Speaker System Z523 with Subwoofer are several lengthy reviews on these speakers already, so I'll keep this short. I think the four and five star rated reviews are pretty much spot on. Yes, the woofer can easily overpower the desk speakers. That's why there's a separate volume control marked "bass". Look, this is not a home stereo system. It's a set of good quality computer speakers with a woofer footrest.

2.0 vs 2.1 PC speakers?

Ok, I am considering upgrading my old bottom of the line speakers. They are 2.0 I've never really messed with a subwoofer or anything. In fact i never even considered getting one, but I've been wondering if it's worth it. I would like to keep things to 2.0 to save room but are there any speakers out there that are good price that sound awesome even without the woofer? Or should i get a 2.1 system b ecause it will sound way more awesome then any 2.0 speaker set?

P.S WHere do I put subwoofer?

I have a great speaker system that cost me $40. It's the Logitech X-240. Bass is amazing and it has Bass control. The only con to this system is the sub will sound like its about to blow at first, but it doesn't. I've had this system for about a year and its great. I love loud music btw, and I have no blown speakers. Oh, also the wiring sucks... but the satellite speakers are small and sub isn't that big... it just sits right behind my monitor.

This is my second favorite speaker system I've owned, and is neck to neck on the best one I've owned... my favorite is the Creative Labs SBS 380, but I can't find those anymore...

I looked online and sounds like this speaker system is perfect for you. Great sound quality (as I read from the reviews) and small AND within a budget!!

Which 2.1 PC speaker system is better?

So I'm in the market for a new set of PC speakers; I've pretty much tired of my old JBL 2.1 system. I'm also buying a new LCD TV and I briefly thought of getting a 5.1 system and somehow switching it between my PC and my TV, but I dismissed that idea cause I'll prob want to watch TV and use my PC at the same time.

Anyway so I've decided that for now I will just settle for a new 2.1 system for my PC and the TV audio should be adequate. I was looking at two main systems, the Logitech X-230/240, and I just saw a display in PC Richards yesterday of the Bose Companion 3 Series II system (the Companion 5 was really cool - it emulates 5.1 with only 2 speakers - but the $400 price tag is out of my range). I'm wondering if it's really worth it to splurge $250 for the Bose system, or to stick to a cheaper set that may be pretty darn good itself.

So...do I go for the Bose? Or do I stick to a cheaper model? And if the cheaper one, is the Logitech the best to get? Or are there others?

With 250, you can buy a 5.1+ speaker set. I don't think it's justifiable to spend 250 on a 2.1 speaker set no matter what. If I were you, I would stick with the Logitech. The best way of course is to go to a local store (Best Buy, Fry's) and listen to them. If you're really into bass, look for the one with more watts. Bose is a good company, but I feel that they are too overrated. If the specs for the speakers are similar, then I'd stick with the Logitechs. You should look for online reviews to compare.

I am looking for the best speaker system between £50 and £70. In order of usage:

1) music
2) Gaming
3)Movies and Misc

Basically looking for a wide range of sound, enabling the listener to hear pretty much everything thats going on the music, game. Whatever. I was looking at the Creative Inspire T6100 but some people have stated that the Tweeters and the Sub are the high points or the system and that the mid range is not that good. Your help much apprieciated.

I build loudspeakers, but not amplifiers...
so I got these due to the excellent reviews I read and because I didn't want to have an amplifier and all that around cluttering up my computer area. I just wanted some good quality sound for a reasonable cost.
Compared to other computer speaker systems I've sampled there tops.

Give them a listen - It's up to you and your ears what you like best.

the ones I have would fall within your price range, a few pounds shy of your top end (£70).

That is not the issue, there are good and bad PC speakers as well as home theater speakers, you either chose the wrong speakers OR you have them hooked up to the wrong amplifier, which also contributes to the sound quality.

So the key is buying speakers that sound good to your ears and in the room they will be played in as the acoustics of the room also plays a big role in the overall sound quality.

A very bright room (one with hard surfaces, tile floors, little furniture, no drapes etc,) can make speakers sound bright and thin and lack richness, and delicacy.

A room that is heavily damped can requires speakers that are little brighter to compensate for the absorption or high frequency's otherwise the system can sound dull and lifeless.

So the key is finding the right speakers for the rooms acoustics, and how you like to hear music, as we all hear differently. Simply listen to speakers with a wide range of music, so you can find the right speakers that sound good to your ears, and also keep in mind what the acoustics of your room might be.

What are the materials used in the room, and you can simply go into your room and listen to your own voice and clap your hands to see how live it is. Ideally when you clap your hands the sound should die off within 1.5 seconds. If you can still hear the sound well after that the room is pretty live. So you want to choose speakers at that point that are not to bright which can over exaggerate the brightness of the room, and vice versa if the room is heavily damped.

So once you choose speakers you like, then the next step is buying a amplifier that can both drive them properly and compliments them sonically.

You want to look at speakers efficiency and impedance.

For every 3db over its rated efficiency you want to double the amplifier power, till you get to the sound pressure levels your hoping to achieve, and then add a little extra so you have some reserve power and never get close to its maximum output. This assure that you don't over drive the amplifier ( the number one reason of damage to speakers or amplifier) sending a distorted signal to the speakers which can either damage the speakers or amplifier.

Then you want to buy a amplifier that compliments the sound of the speakers as everything in audio has a sonic signature. For example you wouldn't want to put a amplifier that might have a bright sound with speakers that also have a brighter sound, as you guest it your have a overly bright sounding system, and even more so if the room is highly reverberant.

How do you know the sound of speakers and equipment ? Well you can either read reviews from some the better magazines like Absolute Sound, or Stereophile, or try and find someone that knows the sound of equipment.

For example Marantz, Denon, (great brands by the way ) have a very sweet rich sound, almost like the sound of vacuum tubes. where as Yamaha and Sony (terrible products) have a very bright thin sound to them.

But even with that said its the combination of the speakers and amplifier to create a natural balance of sound.

I need gain or volume boost and treble and bass controls. Don't need pro audio quality. I transcribe recorded spoken voice files, and sometimes the sound quality is bad. I used to have a pair of small speakers with a subwoofer, and I plugged my headphones into one of the speakers that had volume and treble and bass controls, but the speaker system broke. I'd like to maybe get a headphone amp that does the same thing rather than get a whole new speaker system (unless new speakers would be cheaper). Thanks.

The original source of what I transcribe is a phone, and some of what I transcribe is dictated on a cell phone in a car or maybe on a speaker phone 10 feet away or on a just plain crappy phone that sounds like there's a blanket over the phone. The quickest and easiest thing for me to do in these cases is just turn up the volume a little and roll off the bass and turn up the treble. I need quick and easy (and inexpensive).

You also do need a decent set of headphones that are both comfortable and really clear on the mid-range sounds. I don't think treble and bass are key unless to turn them down.
You could add in a software audio equalizer.
I won't dig into them now, but browse through Nonags.com for freeware and see what you come up with.

As to headphones, you need to decide whether sound isolation is important. The open-back design sometimes does a lot better in the sound, but does leak out and in to neighboring people and environmental sounds.
Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Monitor Headphones at about $160 - maximum isolation and ultimate comfort these rate amound the best at the under $200 in any review.
Sony MDR-V6 Monitor Series Headphones with CCAW Voice Coil at under $70 - probably too high on the bass, but these headphones make all sounds loud.
Creative Aurvana Live! at about $60 - build quality is not as good as others, and bass a bit weak, but the sound reproduction in the midrange seems to be right-on and price a value.
Grado Prestige Series SR80i at about $100 - Some find the pads uncomfortable and it leaks sound as an open-back, but the audio is full and crisp.

I think a lot of the sound quality will be in your headphone choice more than anything else, but laptops and even desktop pc's just don't have the best audio amplifying. In a desktop PC, you can invest in an over $60 sound card that would boost quality and you should look into reviews if that is where you are at. They often come with equalizer software.
