Which 2.1 PC speaker system is better?

Jedius99

So I'm in the market for a new set of PC speakers; I've pretty much tired of my old JBL 2.1 system. I'm also buying a new LCD TV and I briefly thought of getting a 5.1 system and somehow switching it between my PC and my TV, but I dismissed that idea cause I'll prob want to watch TV and use my PC at the same time.

Anyway so I've decided that for now I will just settle for a new 2.1 system for my PC and the TV audio should be adequate. I was looking at two main systems, the Logitech X-230/240, and I just saw a display in PC Richards yesterday of the Bose Companion 3 Series II system (the Companion 5 was really cool - it emulates 5.1 with only 2 speakers - but the $400 price tag is out of my range). I'm wondering if it's really worth it to splurge $250 for the Bose system, or to stick to a cheaper set that may be pretty darn good itself.

So...do I go for the Bose? Or do I stick to a cheaper model? And if the cheaper one, is the Logitech the best to get? Or are there others?

Answer
With 250, you can buy a 5.1+ speaker set. I don't think it's justifiable to spend 250 on a 2.1 speaker set no matter what. If I were you, I would stick with the Logitech. The best way of course is to go to a local store (Best Buy, Fry's) and listen to them. If you're really into bass, look for the one with more watts. Bose is a good company, but I feel that they are too overrated. If the specs for the speakers are similar, then I'd stick with the Logitechs. You should look for online reviews to compare.

I am a recording engineer and i bought these speakers to use as reference monitors to compare my mixes on a pair of consumer speakers. They sound a whole lot better than i expected! At low volume levels, these speakers aren't far from my pair of $1000 professional studio monitors. They do lack a bit of mid to low-mid on the frequency spectrum, but that is expected with...

Decent
These put out pretty good sound, but if they are turned up too loud, then they will distort and throw some static into the mix. Also, the bass adjustment is on the back of the subwoofer, that I keep on the floor a bit out of the way. The volume control is neat with the dial on top, but it is not as heavy as the wires connected to it, so the wires decide where the...

Not just for computers - improves cheap TVs, July 7, 2008
By Arthur Kimes (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I recenty got a inexpensive 19" HDTV which has decent enough video quality but it burdened with the WORST sound I've heard on a TV. Tinny sounding speakers with little volume. But there was a headphone jack on the TV. With headphones, the TV sounded excellent. My computer speakers were connected with a headphone jack... They worked just fine on the TV. I looked for powered 2.1 computer speaker systems on Amazon and was delighted to find many choices under $40. The best value for the money seemed to be this Logitech and the cheap TV now has excellent sound.

I give this a 5 star rating (instead of a 3 or a 4) because of the low price. There are better 2.1 systems but nowhere near this price.

Awesome, January 25, 2008

Great sound with a nice touch of base. All the quality in a small package. The speaker wires are really not long enough for distant placement of speakers the wire doesn't spread that far apart. The sub woofer does well it packs a punch when cranked up. The piano black color adds nice touch to the speakers and woofer which is kind of heavy but slim enough to fit just about anywhere. The volume control and mic/phone jack controls are easy to use and a big plus for me. Easy gliding volume control the whole system feels solid with no visible weaknesses. Over all a good speaker system for the money. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews

ok im looking to get new speakers. ive been looking at these: http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/speakers_audio/home_pc_speakers/devices/232&cl=us,en

and i think theyre good. what you guys think of them? and any suggestions on which speakers to get. i get the newest speakers from logitech which are amazing, but thats just way outta my price range considering im planning on gettin a lot more stuff.

Answer
in speakers either get creative or logitech, I got a logitech 2.1 system and I am happy I did and creative is just as good, I've heard Altec Lansing makes the best speakers but their prices are twice of logictech and creative,

I compared a logitech and creative with that were equally loud and logitech was a bit cheaper so I got that(and I generally like logitech products)

What are good 2.1 computer speakers for a dorm room?

I am looking for a 2.1 computer speaker system that has good-high-excellent quality for a dorm room.?
I want 2.1 computer speakers from good to excellent quality. I dont want floor shaking bass, but I want the bass to fill the room. I also want the speaker sound quality to be At least good quality- excellent.
To: mark_hensley@sbcglobal.net- ok so excellent might be a little far fetched. My price range is $300

Answer
Misha,

What is your budget? Excellent is relative to a price point. I have this set up, it is one of several different set ups this one works well. Purchase the Kicker ik501 for $169, then purchase a digital audio converter (DAC) like Audioengine's D1 for $169. The Kicker has five speakers and a passive radiator that works like a sub. It also has a built in amp delivering an additional 22 watts, all in one devices. It is mobile in a dorm room and fits. The DAC will clarify or filter the music even better after 50 hours of burn in. If you are a music lover this set up will fill the room, its crystal clear, its well within your budget and you don't have to worry about it being broken or destroyed because someone wasn't watching what they were doing. In this case you do not have to get the DAC, the DAC moves you from good to very good just at the tipping point of best for a reasonable price. What you will find is that the ik501 is a very loud and clear unit, very few can out gun this ipod docking station. Which leads me to my second point. You can download Pandora for free on your ipod or phone, place it in the dock and you have radio from around the world at no cost. The Audioengine can be plugged into your usb port and play music off of your computer into the ipod docking station, or, you can plug it into a wall then use a router get a toslink optical cable plug it into the back of the ik501 (aux) and your music from your computer will stream to wherever you set you Kicker. And of course you can play music directly off of your ipod or phone. For $169.00 USD you have five different options in a dorm room to hear music. You can stream from your computer, you can down load Pandora, you can play music directly from your ipod, or your phone directly in the docking station and you can plug it into your flat screen providing excellent audio. If you were my daughter and asked me this exact thing, wanting me to buy it this is what she would be getting and my daughter deserves the best of what I can afford as long as she takes care of it. Hopefully I am communicating to you how strongly I believe this will benefit your dorm room and is a good spend for your money. I encourage you to do so.

I wish you a wonderful college experience. Enjoy and work hard, we need you.

Best.

What kind of equalizer would be appropriate for a 2.1 powered speakers system connected to a TV?

I just connected, with great effect, a 2.1 Logitech Z-2300 speaker system to my TV. However I would like to maximize the sound for music. Would an equalizer be appropriate? If yes, what should be the specifications? Price range: $50-$70.

Answer
Any equalizer will work. I don't know of any that inexpensive. Furthermore, I wouldn't use one. Unless you are a professional installer who is testing the frequency response after room dynamics you do best not to. All the equalizer will do for you will be to degrade signal quality and make the frequency response less flat (flat is best). Equalizers were a fad among stereo users (they corrupt surround sound) back in the 80's that has gradually died out except among very high end applications that adjust a system for room dynamics.
