What components would be best to make a average gamers computer?

I'm not a hardcore comp gamer but love me games like total war and things like that problem is very few work on my simple old computer I know the basic on building a new one but I don't understand all the names for computer parts. Also I can't afford to spend allot of money and I would like to beable to upgrade the computer too keep up with game requirements.
