What do I need for a PA system to host trivia nights in a bar?
Steve W
I have 2 large speakers (not powered, I don't think!) but I need an amp to run speakers, amp, microphone and a laptop for music. The speakers just have the basic red/black connections that you put the bare speaker wire in. What do I need (tight budget) and how do I connect speakers to the system? thanks for any help.
Answer
It sounds like your speakers are just your run of the mill home stereo speakers that are unpowered.
So, you would need some kind of mixer and power amp. That can be two separate pieces of equipment, or a powered mixer (which is probably better for your application).
I can't recommend anything specific for you, because you didn't state how much power your speakers can handle. I don't want to recommend a 300 watt amp when your speakers are only rated for 50 watts.
Since this appears to be outside the area of your expertise, I would encourage you to find help locally. What you're talking about is not that technically challenging, and most people with a moderate amount of experience with PA systems should be able to help you out. Call up a local music store that sells PA equipment, a sound rental house, or even possibly a karaoke host or DJ to assist you.
Good luck.
